Rudraprayag, June 15 (IANS)
All seven people on board, including a 23-month-old infant and the pilot, lost their lives when a helicopter en route from Kedarnath Dham to
Guptkashi crashed early Sunday morning in the Gaurikund area of Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district.
The chopper went down in a densely forested region near Gauri Mai Khark during its short 10-minute flight, crashing between Gaurikund and Sonprayag around 5:20 a.m.
According to a statement issued by the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA),
championship winners and WTC title-holders Australia, many were rightly cautious, though optimistic from the inside.
Markram, who ended day three with 102 not out, continued to trust his aggressive instincts to lead South Africa to championship glory with a magnificent 136, as the Proteas completed the chase

Nearly 400 arrested in Los Angeles immigration protests
Los Angeles, June 12 (IANS)
Nearly 400 people in immigration protests have been arrested or detained by the Los Angeles Police Department since Saturday, media reports said.

in 83.4 overs to win the Ultimate Test, also their eighth straight win in the format.
Markram was at the forefront of South Africa winning the 2014 U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, and this time too, he’s been at the front and centre by leading the side to a major senior championship win after the 1998 ICC Knockout, which is popularly known as the Champions Trophy.
Resuming from 213/2, South Africa were dealt an early blow when Temba Bavuma nicked off a back-of-the-length delivery behind to the keeper off Cummins and fell for 66 off 134 balls. With Nathan Lyon getting some turn, it meant that South Africa had to go through the nervy path in their quest to win the championship, with Australia keeping the
pressure up and not giving any runs freely.
Markram, though, settled the nerves by crunching Cummins for four, before pulling him firmly through mid-wicket for another boundary. But Australia made another big strike when Mitchell Starc castled a jittery Tristan Stubbs through the gate and took out the leg-stump bail.
Once Australia wasted their third review of the innings, a clear sign of desperation, the writing was on the wall. Markram and David Bedingham were a picture of calmness while rotating the strike easily, as South Africa inched closer to the target.
The deficit came under 20 when Bedingham played a silky ondrive off Cummins, bringing the crowd of Proteas supporters to life. That hit a crescendo
when Markram whipped Josh Hazlewood through mid-wicket for four, before taking three runs in the same fashion on the very next ball.
Though Markram couldn’t finish the chase as he flicked to mid-wicket and fell for 136 off Hazlewood, Kyle Verreynne hit the winning runs by carving Starc through cover-point to begin joyful, emotional celebrations in the dressing room, loyal supporters, family members, and former players in the Home of Cricket, as well as back home in South Africa.
Brief scores:
Australia 212 and 207 lost to South Africa 138 and 282/5 in 83.4 overs (Aiden Markram 136, Temba Bavuma 66; Mitchell Starc 3-66, Josh Hazlewood 1-58) by five wickets.

noted that the injuries reported occurred inside buildings, with several caused by shrapnel from intercepted missiles.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said following the launches that "Iran crossed red lines when it dared to fire missiles at civilian population centers in Israel."
"We will continue to protect the citizens of Israel," he said,
warning that the country would "ensure that Tehran pays a very heavy price for its criminal actions."
Meanwhile, the IDF denied Iranian media reports that Iran had downed an Israeli fighter jet and detained its pilot.
In a separate statement, the IDF said it had attacked earlier Friday Iranian Air Force bases in western Iran, destroying Tabriz Airbase, without providing further details.
It added that the IDF attacked and destroyed dozens of Iranian air defence targets, drones, and surface-to-surface missile launchers.
"The IDF is prepared to continue to operate as necessary," the statement read. "The IDF is continuously conducting situational assessments and will continue to update on developments."
Honeymoon murder case: ‘Mangalsutra’ clue made Sonam Raghuvanshi a prime suspect

Raja, 29, and Sonam, 25, who had recently tied the knot in Indore on May 11, reached Meghalaya on May 20 for their honeymoon. The couple vanished on May 23 in Sohra, East Khasi Hills, just hours after checking out of a homestay in Nongriat village.
On June 2, Raja's body was discovered in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls. The search for Sonam concluded when she
surrendered in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur on June 9.
Police also arrested her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, along with three contract killers allegedly hired by Sonam to carry out the murder.
Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) I Nongrang revealed that a breakthrough in the case came when police recovered a mangalsutra and a ring from the suitcase Sonam had left at the Sohra homestay.
"A married woman leaving behind
the ornaments gave us a clue to pursue her as a suspect in the case," Nongrang said.
According to a police officer involved in the investigation, the couple had arrived at the Sohra homestay on May 22 without prior booking and were unable to secure a room.
They left their luggage at the property and planned to trek over 3,000 steps to reach Nongriat village, famous for its doubledecker living root bridge.

An eyewitness, Hansa Ben, a relative of a victim of the Air India Flight AI171 crash, speaking to IANS, said, "We were outside on the road when the incident happened. My sister-in-law was running a tea stall there. She and her son were both present at the spot. The boy was 15 years old and was sleeping on a rope bed (khatiya). Suddenly, there was a fire and he got caught in it. He didn’t survive. His mother has been admitted to the hospital…"
Another eye-witness, Suraj Gajjar, whose house is just 500 metres away from the crash site, said, "When the blast happened around 1.40 p.m., we ran from our house, it’s about 500 meters from here. Everyone from the local area gathered at the spot. Within 5-6 minutes, the police, fire department, and all emergency
services had already arrived and have been working non-stop since then. The bodies being recovered are all from the plane crash. Work has been ongoing here continuously..."
Another eyewitness recalled how his life was saved by just 40 seconds. "I missed it by just 40 seconds", recalled a shaken young man who had been on his way to his brother's admission. "... Had I been there a little earlier, I could have been a victim too... I immediately called all my friends and asked them to rush to the spot. No one had the courage to go near the fire, and even the fire brigade hadn’t arrived. When we arrived, we first went to the canteen. My group and I tried to remove the gas cylinders to prevent more explosions. Despite the danger, one explosion had already occurred. We didn’t care for our safety, our focus was on rescuing the trapped", he said.

the victims included six pilgrims -- five adults and an infant -- hailing from Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
The pilot was also among the deceased. The incident has been attributed to poor visibility and adverse weather conditions, which officials say played a major role in the crash. Rescue and relief operations are in full swing, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) making their way to the site to aid in recovery efforts.
The crash site is reported to be in a difficult-to-access forested area above Gauri Mai Khark, further complicating rescue operations.
SDRF teams are navigating through the rugged terrain to reach the exact spot.
Expressing his grief, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami posted on social media, "Very sad news has been received about a helicopter crash in Rudraprayag district. SDRF, local administration and other rescue teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I pray to Baba Kedar for the safety of all the travellers."
This marks the fifth aviationrelated incident since the portals of the Kedarnath temple were opened on May 2.
On June 7, a separate helicopter developed a technical fault during take-off and was forced to make an emergency landing on the Rudraprayag-Gaurikund highway.

Masked looters targeted several businesses, including an Apple Store, where they smashed windows and made away with electronic products. They also defaced the building with graffiti.
Other businesses hit included Adidas outlets, pharmacies, marijuana dispensaries, and jewellery stores. Videos circulating online show widespread vandalism, with shelves emptied and storefronts damaged.
Law enforcement responded with arrests as the chaos intensified.
The Los Angeles Police Department was stretched thin in
the face of the unrest.
US President Donald Trump has dispatched over 4,000 National Guard troops and about 700 active-duty Marines to the Los Angeles area despite the objections of California Governor Gavin Newsom and other local officials. The President cited an "assault on peace and public order" and threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act, a rarely used federal law, to crack down on protesters.
Demonstrations against the Trump administration's immigration crackdown have intensified and spread far beyond Los Angeles, with thousands of people gathering in at least two dozen cities, US media reported.
Dassault Aviation, Tata Advanced Systems to manufacture Rafale fuselage in India
Mumbai, June 5 (IANS) In a major development, French major Dassault Aviation and Tata Advanced Systems Limited on Thursday signed four production transfer agreements to manufacture the Rafale fighter aircraft fuselage in India, marking a significant step forward in strengthening the country’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities and supporting global supply chains.
Tata Advanced Systems will set up a cutting-edge production facility in Hyderabad for the manufacture of key structural sections of the Rafale, including the lateral shells of the rear fuselage, the complete rear section, the central fuselage, and the front section. The first
fuselage sections are expected to roll off the assembly line in FY2028, with the facility expected to deliver up to two complete fuselages per month.
"For the first time, Rafale fuselages will be produced outside France. This is a decisive step in strengthening our supply chain in India. Thanks to the expansion of our local partners, including TASL, one of the major players in the Indian aerospace industry, this supply chain will contribute to the successful ramp-up of the Rafale, and, with our support, will meet our quality and competitiveness requirements," said Eric Trappier, Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation.
The signing of these contracts reflects Dassault Aviation’s strong commitment to India’s ‘Make in India’ and 'Atmanirbhar' initiatives.
This partnership aims to strengthen India’s position as a key player in the global aerospace
supply chain while supporting its goal of greater economic selfreliance.
"This partnership marks a significant step in India’s aerospace journey. The production of the complete Rafale fuselage in India underscores the deepening trust in Tata Advanced Systems’ capabilities and the strength of our collaboration with Dassault Aviation," said Sukaran Singh, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Advanced Systems Limited.
It also reflects the remarkable progress India has made in establishing a modern, robust aerospace manufacturing ecosystem that can support global platforms, Singh mentioned.
In April this year, India signed a landmark Rs 63,000 crore deal with France to buy 26 RafaleMarine fighter jets, which will give added punch to the Indian Navy, amid growing security concerns over China flexing its maritime muscle in the IndoPacific region.
Calcutta HC grants interim bail to law student held for hurting religious sentiments
Kolkata, June 5 (IANS) The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted interim bail for Sharmistha Panoli, the 22-yearold law student and social media influencer arrested recently by Kolkata Police on charges of hurting religious sentiments and promoting hatred through her posts.
A vacation bench of Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury granted her interim bail against a personal bond of Rs 10,000.
However, at the same time, her interim bail comes with a lot of restrictions as well. The court directed her to fully cooperate in the investigation carried out against her by the Kolkata Police and not leave the country without the prior permission of the court.
Justice Basu Chowdhury also observed that in case she is required to go abroad for academic purposes, her application should be treated seriously by the trial court.
The single-judge bench also directed the Kolkata Police to ensure full protection for her considering the threats received by her over her controversial post which she deleted later in the face of criticisms and also tendered a public apology for posting it.
The High Court also ruled out
the necessity for custodial interrogation of Panoli by the investigating officers.
It also observed that the arrest warrant issued against Panoli was mechanical in nature and it was done without proper evaluation of whether there was a really cognisable offence in the matter. The court also noted that the process of serving notice was going on when she was out of Kolkata.
An FIR was registered against Panoli at Garden Reach Police Station on May 15 for posting an Instagram video, where she made some objectionable comments related to 'Operation Sindoor' that had reportedly hurt the religious sentiments of a particular community.

Chennai, June 9 (IANS) As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance urban infrastructure, the Tamil Nadu government is set to roll out underground sewerage projects worth Rs 3,360 crore in 14 municipal corporations under the Centre’s Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 scheme.
AMRUT 2.0 aims to provide universal access to essential urban services, including safe water supply, efficient sewerage systems, and improved sanitation.
Tamil Nadu is one of the leading states in implementing the scheme, with several major cities expected to benefit from the new underground drainage (UGD) works.
The cities identified for the Rs 3,360 crore sewerage upgrade include Tirunelveli, Vellore, Dindigul, Salem, Cuddalore, and Nagercoil, among others. More than 3,000 kilometres of sewer pipelines will be laid, and new sewage pumping stations will be established.
The project is expected to transition over five lakh households from conventional septic tanks to a modern underground sewerage network.
Officials from the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department confirmed that preparatory work is nearing
completion and full-scale implementation is expected to begin within a month.
The works, which will be carried out across various districts, are slated to be completed within two years.
Sources in the Municipal administration department said that each corporation has its own timeline depending on the size and complexity of the project.
The official further said, “Beyond improving sanitation and public health, the expanded UGD network will significantly reduce pollution in nearby rivers and water bodies.“
This initiative is part of a broader state-level strategy to modernise urban civic infrastructure under the AMRUT 2.0 umbrella. In total, more than 60 urban local bodies in Tamil Nadu have received approval for various projects under the scheme.
Honeymoon murder case: Raj Kushwaha is innocent, say mother, sister
in his defence, asserting that he is innocent and incapable of committing such a crime.
On Monday, his family members said Raj, who is the only earning member in the household, was being falsely implicated and had no relationship with Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raja's wife, beyond a professional one.
Speaking to reporters, Raj's mother stated, "My son is innocent. The police just took him. The police are lying, and there is no truth in those claims. My son could never do that. He has the responsibility for his sisters. He used to work very hard. I do not believe any of this."
Andhra Pradesh to establish Logistics Corporation soon
Amaravati, June 3 (IANS) The Andhra Pradesh government plans to establish the Andhra Pradesh Logistics Corporation soon to drive infrastructure growth across roads, ports, airports, and fishing harbours.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday directed officials to complete Phase-1 works of Machilipatnam, Ramayapatnam, and Mulapeta ports as well as the Kakinada Gateway Port by December next year. He also instructed the completion of Phase-1 construction for the Juvvaladinne, Nizampatnam, Machilipatnam, and Uppada fishing harbours within the same timeframe.
Chairing a review meeting at his camp office in Undavalli, he emphasised that ports and fishing harbours are valuable
economic assets for Andhra Pradesh. He stressed the urgency of completing these projects and bringing them into operational use swiftly. Discussions also included port operations and maintenance.
The Chief Minister stated that ports, airports, and harbours will drive the state’s economic surge. He called for the transformation of ports and fishing harbours into economic assets.
He urged officials to explore the possibility of upgrading fishing harbours into minor ports without causing inconvenience to local fishing communities, thereby enhancing regional incomes.
The Chief Minister directed the immediate initiation of Phase-1 works for new airports in Kuppam, Dagadarthi, Amaravati, and Srikakulam (Palasa). He emphasised the goal of developing at least 20 ports and 14 airports across the state.
He also instructed moves for the expansion of state roads in accordance with traffic needs, integrating them with national highways through the PublicPrivate Partnership (PPP) mode.
Assam trains more than 10.5 lakh schoolgirls in martial arts
Guwahati, May 29 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday spotlighted the state government’s ongoing push to empower schoolgirls through martial arts training under the Rani Lakshmibai Atma Raksha Prashikshan scheme.
According to the Chief Minister, more than 10.5 lakh girls have already taken the martial arts training program.
The family consists of Raj's mother and his three sisters, as his father passed away during the Covid-19 pandemic.
His sister also stood by him, saying, "I know my brother. He would never do such a thing. I also know Vishal; he is like my brother. They are both innocent, and they cannot do anything like this. All this is a lie."
She also dismissed the allegations about Raj's alleged affair with Sonam, stating, "They (Raj and Sonam) were not in any kind of relationship. How can they be? They were just like any employee and employer would be. I just want to say that my brother is not related to this case."
Posting on microblogging platform X, Sarma underscored the importance of education and empowerment for young girls.
“Our girls should be educated, empowered & brave. They should be able to take up any challenge, and our Govt is working towards ensuring this,” he wrote.
The self-defence program, launched to equip girls with practical skills to safeguard themselves, has so far trained more than 10.5 lakh students from Classes VI to XII.
Participants undergo a threemonth training course in martial arts, including Karate, Judo, and Taekwondo, fostering both physical strength and mental
resilience. In the current 2024–25 cycle, the Assam government has allocated Rs 20.39 crore for the initiative, reaching over 13,000 schools across the state.
The widespread implementation reflects the government’s broader agenda of enhancing safety, confidence, and leadership among adolescent girls.
Praised for its holistic approach to empowerment, the initiative not only promotes self-defence but also instils discipline and selfassurance among students.
As Assam continues to focus on youth empowerment, the scheme has emerged as a flagship effort in preparing girls to face real-world challenges with courage and capability.
Earlier, the Chief Minister claimed the state government's ambitious scheme, Nijut Moina, to support young girls by providing cash benefits, has proven to be beneficial for eradicating child marriage from society.
He said, "The #NijutMoina Achoni is helping girls across Assam to realise their aspirations by saving them from the curse of child marriage and allowing them to pursue their education. Let's hear from our little Bhagins on how this scheme has touched their lives."
The Chief Minister argued that, along with strict enforcement, beneficiary schemes like the Nijut Moina initiative have been uplifting the girl children towards a better future.

No sympathy for Pak, unequivocal support for India: All-party delegation in US
Washington, June 5 (IANS) The Indian all-party parliamentary delegation currently on a diplomatic outreach in the United States has stated that its interactions in several countries have clearly revealed a complete lack of sympathy for Pakistan and overwhelming support for India's stance on cross-border terrorism. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, delegation head and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, "What we are seeking to do in every country is to explain our version of events, our experience of the last few weeks, to seek the solidarity and understanding of
those we meet and speak to."
"I'm very pleased to say that so far, our batting average is over 100 -- in other words, every single person we have met so far has immediately not only condemned resolutely the terrorist attack upon India and expressed their outrage and their sympathy, but they have also explicitly endorsed India's right to defend itself against terrorism, and this kind of understanding has been most welcome."
Tharoor described the Pahalgam terror attack as an egregious disruption during a time of economic and social optimism in Kashmir.
"Kashmir was booming. Ordinary Kashmiris are benefiting from vast numbers of tourists coming in, putting money into their hands and their pockets. It was a lovely time. And here's this innocent group of holiday tourists on a
dappled meadow in Kashmir being murdered in cold blood by people coming and asking their religion and shooting them between the eyes," he said.
"It really was a sickening outrage, and the nation rose as one to support whatever the government chose to do, and what the government chose to do in the end was what most of us would have wanted," he added.
He also explained India's calibrated military response and eventual ceasefire.
"If you were to go back and look at the briefings the government gave each morning, the message is very clear: we are hitting them because they are hitting us. If they stop, we'll stop. And after 88 hours, the Pakistani Director General of Military Operations reached out to his Indian counterpart and said, let's call it off. And we called it off," Tharoor said.
‘Brilliantly chosen name’, says Shashi Tharoor on significance of ‘Operation Sindoor’ in US
Washington, June 5 (IANS)
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor-led all-party Indian Parliamentary delegation in the US said that Operation Sindoor was a "brilliantly chosen name" and explained its significance as part of the global efforts to highlight India's unequivocal and united stand to fight Pakistanbacked cross border terrorism in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
During an interaction session at the National Press Club in the US on Wednesday (local time), Tharoor noted that the colour of sindoor is not very different from the colour of blood and even used the Hindi expression "khoon ka badla khoon" and said that here it was 'sindoor ka badla khoon',
meaning blood in response to what the terrorists have done to the sindoor.
Asked why India chose the name 'Operation Sindoor' for its counter-terrorism action, the Congress MP said, "Operation Sindoor, actually, I thought was a brilliantly chosen name. Sindoor, in case some Americans obviously don't know about this, is a vermilion mark that is applied to the centre of the forehead of married women in the Hindu tradition. It's widely practised. Some non-Hindus do it too, but more for decorative purposes, but strictly speaking, the Sindoor is applied at the time of the marriage ceremony and is worn every day thereafter by married women. So, we were very conscious of these brutal terrorists who, by the way, shot men in front of their wives and children but spared the women and when one wife screamed out, Kill me too, she was told, no, you
go back and tell them what we've done."
"That was why the women were spared horrendous, horrendous act. That sindoor had essentially been wiped off the foreheads of 26 Indian women, I was gonna say Hindu women, but one of them actually was a Christian, but the sindoor had been wiped off the rest by these terrorist actions, and so we wanted first of all, to avenge that act of wiping off the sindoor. But, secondly, it's no accident that the colour of the sindoor is bright vermilion red, which is not far from the colour of blood, and in many ways there is a Hindi expression that 'khoon ka badla khoon'; here it was 'sindoor ka badla khoon' hoga, that is, blood in response to what they have done to the sindoor," he added. Earlier, the all-party delegation met Bipartisan co-chairs Ro Khanna and Rich McCormick, as well as vice co-chairs Andy Barr and Marc Veasey, on Wednesday.

or conflicts but is focused on growth and development, and Pakistan wants to interrupt this through terrorism, was a message, conveyed by the Indian parliamentary delegation, led by Shashi Tharoor, during its visits to countries in the Americas.
This message of development resonated with leaders of all the countries the team visited, with the discussions on terrorism moving on to economic growth and cooperation, he said at a meeting with representatives of think tanks.

Explaining Op Sindoor to international community
New Delhi, July 4 (IANS) The move of the Modi government to send out seven multi-party delegations to different world capitals to clarify India’s position regarding Operation Sindoor, which was launched following the terrorist attack at Pahalgam on April 22, did fulfil a strategic requirement of this country in as much as the India-Pak military confrontation provoked by Pakistan-directed terror violence and the subsequent announcement of a ‘ceasefire’ between the two countries, had to be put in the right perspective from India’s point of view.
The brief given to the delegations revolved around the basic Indian contention that the cross-border terrorism long known to be originating from Pakistan, was the
trigger for the retaliatory action of India.
The delegations were to primarily warn the global community that Pakistan’s undiminished terror infrastructure had serious implications for the entire world.
The delegations were expected to call the bluff of Pakistan as the latter was trying to claim that it was also a victim of terrorism.
In reality, Pak ISI had harboured Islamic radical forces like Al Qaeda and Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) which shared the legacy of being anti-West, in addition to the terror outfits like Hizbul Mujahideen (HuM) and the Saudi-funded Lashkare Toiba (LeT) that were always on the right side of the West.
This had given some benefit to Pakistan because of the American policy of making a distinction between ‘good terrorists’ and ‘bad terrorists’ at one point in timebefore the killing of Osama bin Laden near Abbottabad by a team of Navy SEALS, exposed the Pak duplicity on Terror.
Greta Thunberg, activists on ‘Selfie Yacht’ to be deported: Israel
Tel Aviv, June 10 (IANS) Twelve passengers, including climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, who were aboard a yacht bound for Gaza with humanitarian aid, have been brought to Ben Gurion Airport for deportation after the vessel was seized in the Israeli port of Ashdod.
The deportation process follows their interception at sea by Israeli forces.
Taking to X, the Israel Foreign Ministry said, "The passengers of the 'Selfie Yacht' arrived at Ben Gurion Airport to depart from Israel and return to their home countries."
of interest in India, faith that India is heading in the right direction, and appreciation for the fact that even on this terrorism issue, we behave with restraint and responsibility”, Tharoor said. “So, I think you will find that on the whole, we're on the right track here”.
At the same time, he delivered the incontrovertible message that if Pakistan were to hit India through terrorism hoping to interrupt its development agenda, “They will be hit back. We will hit back very hard.”
"Those who refuse to sign deportation documents and leave Israel will be brought before a judicial authority," it added.
The group of activists, part of a mission organised by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), had set out on a journey to deliver critical aid to Gaza, including rice and baby formula.
The boat, named Madleen, was reportedly intercepted about 185 kilometres west of the coast of Gaza.
A video released by the group showed Israeli forces boarding the vessel as the activists stood with their hands raised, with one of them stating that nobody was
injured during the operation.
Following the seizure, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the activists were taken for medical examinations on Monday evening and shown a "horror film documenting the October 7 massacre" committed by Hamas.
"When they saw what it was about, they refused to continue watching," Gallant claimed, accusing Thunberg and the other activists of ignoring Hamas's atrocities and "closing their eyes to the truth."
The FFC strongly condemned the operation, accusing Israeli forces of "attacking" and "unlawfully boarding" the vessel.
The coalition said the aid mission was entirely humanitarian, aiming to bring relief to Gaza, which has faced significant restrictions on aid since the beginning of Israel's blockade.
Among those on board were citizens from Brazil, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey.
Apart from Greta, the group included notable figures such as Rima Hassan, a French Member of the European Parliament, and Omar Faiad, a French journalist with Al Jazeera.
French President Emmanuel Macron was among the leaders who spoke out strongly, urging Israel to release the detained activists swiftly.
"Requested that the six French nationals be allowed to return to France as soon as possible," said the French presidential office.

Is analysing Trump’s Presidency challenge for strategic observers?
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump in his second term is beginning to attract criticism on three counts- his pursuit of the idea of ‘America First’ was pushing the US towards ‘isolationism’, his focus on tariffs was adding to his image as a ‘business leader’ rather than a ‘statesman’ and his Presidency was getting marked for ‘antiliberalism’ that ran counter to the historical American legacy. Does President Trump have the intellectual brilliance of a kind that enabled a leader to give the impression of his being ‘unpredictable’, ‘arbitrary’ and even terse to the point of sounding ‘offensive’ whereas in reality there was a ‘method in his madness’ as he towed a singular path for rectifying governance, controlling financial profligacy and not letting the world take the US for granted? Trump certainly would not like the US to lose the tag of being the first superpower. He has shrewdly identified the world problems that came in the way of American supremacy and has unwaveringly gone tough on them. These are Islamic Terrorism, a determined China trying to get the better of other countries through investment and trade to take the economic route to becoming the second superpower and the undue advantage friendly countries took of the US while projecting the latter as the leader of the Free World.
That President Donald Trump is willing to put all his energy into revolutionising America, is seen in his engagement in
an astonishingly wide range of international crises and negotiations in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
In his time the White House is pivoting many crucial diplomatic initiatives. He is catalysing many negotiations and has not done too badly in sorting out things because of his willingness to do a course correction if the move ran into a dead end. Some of this was evident after he advanced the claim that he had brought about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan when the two countries were in the midst of a military confrontation following the terrorist attack at Pahalgam.
In his innate desire to take credit for finding geopolitical solutions he even talked of mediating between India and Pakistan on the issue of Kashmir but quickly realised that the suggestion was going to create a huge problem for India-US relations. He therefore lost no time in stating that the two countries should talk to each other directly.
Trump Administration cannot be faulted for taking interest in the matter of India-Pak military confrontation after a desperate Pakistan had approached it in the wake of damage inflicted by India on several Pak air bases during the escalating situation.
India’s acceptance of a plea for ceasefire made by Pak at DGMO level, can also not be interpreted as a sign of weakness of any sort.
Operation Sindoor was meant to make punitive strikes at as many as nine terrorist bases beyond LoC and inside Pakistan identified by our Intelligence. A failed attempt of the Pak army subsequently, to make a drone attack on India invited a deadlier missile strike on the leading air bases of Pakistan, pushing the Pakistan army into a situation where it was driven to call for a halt on the military operations.
The response from India can be said to have added to our credentials as a responsible peace-loving nation. Modi government’s claim that Operation Sindoor was a success stands to reason- the political slugfest resulting from it at home can be seen, to an extent, as a manifestation of our domestic politics.
Trump’s approach to foreign policy seems to be flawed for the reason that it did not get all its components right. ‘Making America Great Again’ (MAGA) depended as much on the military and technological might of the US together with its economic power gained largely through trade, as on the ‘patterns of interdependence’ that strengthened America. Trump has apparently given total attention to the first two at the cost of the last prerequisite of US strength being sustained by its links with the democracies of Europe and Asia.
President Trumps’s idea of withdrawing from international institutions and forums promoting liberal values in pursuit of ‘America First’ doctrine, may yield short-term financial gains but they would undermine the cause of US supremacy as the leader of the democratic world.
If all that Trump was doing was only a series of immediate moves meant to correct the trade deficit and inject cost-effectiveness in governance and USAID projects, this could be understood. But there should be no doubt in his mind that MAGA in the long term would rest essentially on a willing acceptance of the US as a repository of human and democratic values, by others- in contrast to the rising autocratic regimes.

Elon Musk hints at forming ‘The America Party’ amid fallout with US President Trump
Washington, June 7 (IANS) Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has ignited fresh speculation in the American political landscape by hinting at the formation of a new political party, possibly named 'The America Party.'
Though Musk has not made a direct announcement, a series of posts on his social media platform X have fuelled widespread discussions.
In one of his posts, Musk floated a poll asking whether a new political party was needed in the United States. He claimed that 80 per cent of respondents supported the idea.
"The public has spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80 per cent in the middle! And exactly 80 per cent of people agree. This is fate," he wrote.
Following this, a user posted an image suggesting the name "America Party".
Musk responded, "The name America Party sounds great. The party that really represents America!"
He then made another post that simply read: "The America Party."
The timing of Musk's posts is seen as significant, coming
military offensive in Gaza had raised serious humanitarian concerns, can be said to be upfront and even astute. His methods are direct-his focus has always been on his personal role in driving diplomatic initiativesand they indicate his strong political will and determination to pursue what he thought was good for America’s economy and business.
His visit to the Arab states, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar who were known to be traditional US alliesled to these countries signing deals investing trillions of dollars in US.
He announced lifting of sanctions on Syria which is now ruled by a non-radical PresidentAhmad Al Sharra- and this led to celebrations in that country. Trump remains firmly in support of Israel and obviously endorses the latest Israeli plan of maintaining a military presence in Gaza in a corridor along its border. Trump had once talked of commercially developing Gaza as a riviera of tourist attraction and he perhaps still sees economic benefit in the idea that Israel should create a trouble-free territory on the Israel-Palestine border.
A radicalised Hamas had invited retaliation from Israel for its brutal terror attack on October 7, 2023 in which 1200 Israelis were killed and 250 more including women were kidnapped.
Israel had the right to militarily pursue Hamas in Gaza from where the terrorist outfit was operating using underground tunnels. However, mass- scale killing of Palestinians including a large number of women and children went far beyond the limits of understandable collateral damage.
Iran taking Hamas in its embrace must have added to the anger of President Trump against that
country. Trump nevertheless continued to try to get Iran to halt its nuclear ambitions just as he expressed hope of bringing Ukraine-Russia ‘war’ to an end. The US President must be given credit for single-handedly following up on what he thought was good for his country and directly guiding the diplomatic, economic and governancerelated policies with zeal and confidence.
India has handled its relationship with the US in President Trump’s second term with wisdom, strategic understanding and a firm belief that a natural friendship between the two largest democracies would only do good to the world.
India has the right, at the same time, to reject what went against mutually beneficial India-US relations or what seemed too arbitrary for a healthy bilateral friendship.
Trump’s attitude of not letting go of the traditional US empathy for Pakistan could have been motivated by a desire to stop the steady drift of Pakistan towards the Chinese camp. American hand can be clearly seen in the grant of large funds to Pakistan by international institutions, to bail out that country in a critical financial crisis.
Indian diplomacy should focus on not letting President Trump’s trade interests in Pakistan come in the way of India’s strategic friendship with the US. We should take advantage of the fact that Trump remained firmly opposed to radical Islamic terrorism and pitch the line that terrorism of any kind including the Pakdirected cross-border terror in Kashmir should be met with zero tolerance.

Iran warns it will target Israel’s ‘secret nuclear sites’ if attacked
amid growing public tension between him and former ally US President Donald Trump. Once close political partners, their relationship has recently taken a dramatic turn.
Musk had previously attended President Trump's Cabinet meetings and was present during the President's inauguration. He was also appointed head of the DOGE department and campaigned actively for Trump. However, that alliance appears to have fractured. Musk resigned from the DOGE department and has since been openly critical of Trump. In one striking post, he asserted, "Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House, and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate… Such ingratitude."
Tehran, June 10 (IANS) Iran's top security body warned that its armed forces would immediately target Israel's "secret nuclear facilities" if the Islamic Republic comes under military attack, following claims it has obtained "sensitive Israeli intelligence."
The Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) issued the statement days after Intelligence Minister Esmaeil Khatib said Iran had acquired a "significant cache" of Israeli documents through
According to the council, months of intelligence gathering had enabled Iran's armed forces to identify high-value Israeli targets for potential retaliatory strikes, should Israel initiate military action against Iranian interests. "This forms part of a broader strategic initiative aimed at countering disinformation by hostile actors and reinforcing Iran's deterrent capabilities," the SNSC said. Tehran's access to Israeli intelligence would allow it to swiftly target "concealed nuclear sites" in the event of an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear infrastructure, the council said, adding that the information also supports proportionate retaliation against attacks on Iran's economic or military assets.

Anand, 17 from Kheda perish in plane crash leaving Gujarat shell-shocked
Ahmedabad, June 13 (IANS)
As India grapples with the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, the Charotar region comprising Anand and Kheda districts has emerged as one of the most affected areas. A sense of disbelief hangs heavy in the villages and towns across the two districts, as reports confirm that at least 50 people from the region were on board the ill-fated London-bound flight.
The flight AI171, which crashed just minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport, had 242 people on board. Of these, 33 were from Anand district, and 17 from Kheda, according to initial reports. Many families have been left shattered, with multiple members perishing in the tragedy.
Among those killed were students, homemakers, doctors, and people who were going to reunite with their loved ones in the UK. One such family is the Halani family from Anand, who had received visitor visas and were travelling to meet relatives. Tragically, all three members lost their lives.
The Anand District BJP released a list of 33 known
passengers from villages like Borsad, Phangni, Chikhodara, Karamsad, Sojitra, Ramnagar, Khambholj, Umreth, Kasumbad, Gana, Tarapur, and Anand city. The list includes 15 women and at least one medical doctor. Crowds of grieving relatives rushed to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where government teams are carrying out DNA identification and helping families through the nightmare.
In Kheda district, the toll remains uncertain. However, it is confirmed that Prashant Patel, former president of Kathlal Municipality, who recently joined the BJP, was also among the passengers. People from Nadiad, Mehmadabad, Thasra, and Kathlal were also headed to London.

Doctor couple’s dreams of new beginning in UK turned to ashes
New Delhi, June 13 (IANS) A doctor couple’s dreams of a new beginning together as a family in UK turned into a nightmare and their last trip together as the illfated flight that was to take them to London crashed seconds after take-off on Thursday.
Now, the young couple from Rajasthan’s last selfie with their children has emerged and is breaking hearts.
The Air India 171 flight to London-Gatwick that the doctor couple and their three little children were on, took off from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday and was in the air for 32 seconds before it failed to climb further and descended rapidly and exploded into a fireball after hitting a building, killing all but one of the 242 people aboard the plane and numerous others on the ground.
According to NDTV, doctor Komi Vyas, who used to work in a
hospital in Udaipur, had quit her job and was moving to join her husband, Dr Prateek Joshi, in London with their three children. Dr Joshi had moved to London some time ago and had returned to Banswara in Rajasthan earlier this week to take the family with him.
"They left for Ahmedabad yesterday to take the flight to London. Prateek had come here just two days ago to take his wife and children with him. Several other members of both families went to see them off," Dr Joshi's cousin, Nayan told NDTV.
The selfie that emerged on Friday, taken by Dr Joshi on the ill-fated aircraft, shows him and his wife seated on one side, smiling, and their young twin boys Nakul and Pradyut (5) and elder daughter Miraya (8) sitting across the aisle.
The joy on their faces was infectious as the family looked forward to a new life in London together.
Now, the last selfie taken by the family is all that is left as a reminder of a beautiful yet short life they had lived together before they were snatched away by the cruel hand of fate.

Ramesh, who was seen walking away from the wreckage despite his injuries, added that he was receiving good medical care.
Prime Minister Modi also visited the Civil Hospital and met with several injured victims of the crash, many of whom are students of the BJ Medical College.
Rupani, who was widely regarded as a leader with a grounded and compassionate nature, was remembered fondly by those close to him.
A temple priest near his residence said, “I’ve known Vijaybhai for over five years. He was always approachable and ready to help, be it community matters or temple issues. He was kind, service-minded, and treated everyone with respect. I prayed for his soul’s peace.”
A longtime domestic staff
member at Rupani's residence shared emotional memories, saying, “He treated everyone equally, no matter who they were. To me, he was like an elder brother; he guided us like a senior family member. His absence has left a void that can never be filled.”
His staff member says, "I have been working with Vijaybhai for 25 years. He was a very good man and treated me like family. I saw him as an elder brother and respected him even more than my own family. I had nothing, but he helped me with everything, from getting my work done to educating my children. He supported me in every possible way."
Rupani’s wife, Anjali Rupani, arrived at Ahmedabad Airport shortly after the incident. She was received by Gujarat State Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi, who extended support on behalf of the state government.

Australian PM says not to compromise biosecurity laws in tariff negotiations with US
Canberra, June 6 (IANS)
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Friday that his government will not loosen biosecurity laws as it considers lifting a restriction on imports of US beef.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Nine Entertainment newspapers reported on Friday that Albanese's Labor Party government could use the import ban on some beef slaughtered in the US as a bargaining chip in negotiations for an exemption from US tariffs.
Indian-origin
Responding to the reports, Albanese said that his government would not negotiate on biosecurity but would be open to a solution that would not compromise food safety, Xinhua news agency reported.
"We'll never loosen any rules regarding our biosecurity," he told ABC radio.
Australia lifted a blanket ban on US beef imports, which had been in place since 2003, in 2019 but import restrictions on beef products from Canadian and Mexican cattle slaughtered in the US remain in place.
The US administration in March identified biosecurity laws relating to beef imports as a trade grievance with Australia ahead of unveiling the 'Liberation Day' tariffs.
The ABC and Nine Entertainment both reported that Australian
officials believe that biosecurity laws could be tweaked to allow US beef into Australia without risking safety.
It comes ahead of an expected meeting between Albanese and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the upcoming G7 Leaders' Summit in Canada.
Health Minister Mark Butler, a member of Albanese's cabinet, told Seven Network television on Friday that the beef import restrictions have been under review for "some time."
"This will be a decision taken on its merits, not for convenience, not to get a deal. We'll be taking a decision in the national interest in this area," he said.
Albanese told ABC radio that he is looking forward to having a faceto-face meeting with Trump and again described the US tariffs as an act of economic "self-harm."
man fights for life after Australian police officials ‘kneed him on neck’
Canberra, June 3 (IANS) A 42-year-old Indian-origin man, Gaurav Kundi, is battling for life after a brutal arrest where he was kneed in the neck to the ground by the Australian police in Adelaide's eastern suburbs. He is currently at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and on life support with severe brain and neck injuries, according to local media reports. His family claimed that excessive
force was used during the arrest, due to which the father-of-two lost consciousness with severe injuries.
The video, which was filmed by Kundi's wife, Amritpal Kaur, shows him being forced onto Payneham Road. Pundi can be heard shouting, "I've done nothing wrong," while Kaur is also crying and claiming his innocence.
"Just 19 seconds of video because I got panicked, and I sat on the ground with Gaurav. I kept saying he's not well, he's not well, please don't do this, just call the ambulance," she said, speaking to local Australian media outlet 9News.
"Doctors are saying his brain is totally damaged. Maybe he will wake up if his brain works, or maybe he will not," she added.
Recalling the incident, Kaur stated that their loud argument caught the attention of a passing police patrol, and they mistakenly interpreted it as a case of domestic violence.
"I just went out and followed him. What are you doing here? Let's get back home. You are drunk. You are not well. We will go home," she recalled.
"He just pushed me a little bit... The policeman thought he was assaulting me and doing domestic violence on the road, but the policeman was wrong. He was just drunk, and that's why he was loud, nothing else," she further stated Kaur alleged that her husband was injured when his head was slammed into the police car and the road and that while he was on the ground, he was kneed in the neck.
Australian scientists introduce real-time genome sequencing to combat deadly superbug
Sydney, June 5 (IANS) Australian researchers have achieved a major advance in tackling Staphylococcus aureus, commonly known as golden staph, a superbug that causes more than a million deaths worldwide each year.
The world-first initiative has demonstrated that real-time genome sequencing during severe infections allows doctors to quickly identify resistance mutations, personalise treatment,
and help curb the spread of antibiotic resistance, according to a release from the Melbournebased Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute) on Wednesday, reports Xinhua news agency.
Collaborating with seven local hospitals, scientists from the Doherty Institute said that traditionally, hospital laboratories identify bacteria using standard tests that reveal only the species type, offering limited insight into antibiotic resistance or genetic changes, the release said.
In contrast, genome sequencing provides a comprehensive genetic profile, uncovering mutations that can influence how bacteria respond to treatment, it said.
Australia raises shooting of reporter in LA with US
Canberra, June 10 (IANS)
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that his government has spoken with the US administration about the shooting of an Australian reporter with rubber bullets in Los Angeles.
Television news reporter Lauren Tomasi was covering the ongoing protests in Los Angeles for Australia's Nine Network News on Sunday local time when she was shot in the leg with a rubber bullet fired by a police officer in the city's downtown district.
Albanese on Tuesday described the footage of the incident,
which was published by Nine and showed the officer taking aim towards Tomasi and firing, as "horrific."
"I spoke with Lauren this morning. She's going OK. She's pretty resilient," he said.
"We have already raised these issues with the US administration. We don't find it acceptable that it occurred. And we think that the role of the media is particularly important."
Albanese's comments came during a major speech to the National Press Club in Canberra in which he laid out his Labor Party government's agenda following May's general election. Albanese said on Tuesday that the policies that Labor took to the election would be the "foundation" of its second term but not the "limit" of the party's vision.
"The way we deal with big challenges and opportunities from our first term, from economic growth and productivity to the energy transition, will continue to evolve," he said.
Scientists develop realtime genome sequencing to combat deadly superbug
Sydney, June 5 (IANS)
Australian scientists have made a breakthrough in combating Staphylococcus aureus, commonly known as golden staph -- a superbug that causes more than a million deaths worldwide each year.
The world-first initiative has demonstrated that real-time genome sequencing during severe infections allows doctors to quickly identify resistance mutations, and personalise treatment, Xinhua news agency reported.
Previously, research into bacterial evolution was typically carried out retrospectively, often years after patients had completed treatment. In contrast, this new method enables clinicians to monitor bacterial changes in real-time, providing immediate and actionable insights for patient care, said the study published in Nature Communications.
Comparing golden staph samples from patients at the start of infection and at treatment failure, researchers found that in a third of cases, the bacteria developed mutations making standard antibiotics ineffective, said lead author Stefano Giulieri at the Doherty Institute and the University of Melbourne.
It will also help curb the spread of antibiotic resistance, said researchers from the Melbournebased Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute).
Collaborating with seven local hospitals, scientists from the Doherty Institute said that traditionally, hospital laboratories identify bacteria using standard tests that reveal only the species type, offering limited insight into antibiotic resistance or genetic changes.

Giulieri added that resistance increased 80-fold within two months, but genomic insights enabled clinicians to successfully adapt treatment and cure the infection.
These findings represent a major step toward targeted therapy for bacterial infections and open the door to future clinical trials that could make this approach standard practice in hospitals worldwide, said the researchers.

AIBC — The pillar of prosperity in Australia-India ties
In the ever-evolving landscape of international diplomacy and economic cooperation, few organizations have played as pivotal a role in nurturing Australia-India relations as the Australia India Business Council (AIBC). Since its formation in 1986, the AIBC has steadily grown into the leading business chamber dedicated to fostering trade, investment, and people-to-people connections between the two Indo-Pacific democracies. In recent years, especially in the context of heightened geopolitical realignments, the AIBC's role has gained newfound relevance and urgency.
The importance of strong bilateral ties between Australia and India cannot be overstated. India is the fastest-growing major economy, while Australia is a stable, resource-rich democracy with a strong knowledge economy. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed in 2020, followed by the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) in 2022, laid a robust framework for deeper economic collaboration. But while governments can sign agreements and set policy directions, the real engine of bilateral economic growth lies in the private sector — and it is here that the AIBC has delivered consistently and effectively.
At the heart of AIBC’s mission is the belief that business connects people in ways diplomacy alone cannot. Through regular forums, trade missions, networking events, and policy advocacy, the AIBC acts as a bridge not just between industries, but between cultures and communities. It has successfully brought together business leaders, entrepreneurs, policy-makers, and academics from both countries to promote mutual growth and understanding.
One of the Council’s most noteworthy contributions has been in sectoral engagement. It has established specialised chapters focusing on key growth sectors like education, healthcare, agribusiness, resources, technology, infrastructure, and clean energy. These chapters are not mere ceremonial bodies — they function as active think-tanks and action groups that help identify real-time challenges and opportunities, guiding both businesses and policymakers. For instance, AIBC’s advocacy for renewable energy cooperation has dovetailed with both nations’ emphasis on sustainability, leading to initiatives in solar technology and green hydrogen.
The AIBC’s strength lies not just in high-level business
networking but in inclusive engagement. Over the years, it has supported Australian SMEs looking to enter the Indian market and vice versa, recognising that bilateral trade cannot thrive unless smaller enterprises also benefit. The Council has also worked to empower Indian-origin professionals and entrepreneurs in Australia, enabling them to become stakeholders in a shared economic destiny.
Educational collaboration has been another cornerstone of AIBC’s efforts. With India sending the second-largest number of international students to Australia, the AIBC has promoted partnerships between Australian universities and Indian institutions, encouraging joint degrees, research projects, and student exchange. This not only enriches Australia’s education sector but also creates generations of India’s future leaders with personal and professional ties to Australia. Moreover, the AIBC has championed cultural diplomacy as a tool for economic cooperation. Business leaders who understand each other’s customs, social dynamics, and market behaviour are far more likely to forge successful partnerships. AIBC events routinely include cultural elements, encouraging attendees to appreciate the broader context of bilateral trade.
In recent years, the Council has also assumed a strategic advisory role. It has been invited to consultations on trade policy, immigration reform, and investment facilitation. Its leadership, comprising seasoned professionals from both Australian and Indian backgrounds, brings nuanced perspectives to these discussions — helping policymakers navigate complex global realities.
Equally important is AIBC’s work in times of global disruption.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, it served as a vital link between businesses grappling with lockdowns, supply chain breakdowns, and travel restrictions. By facilitating digital engagement and sharing best practices, it ensured that Australia-India economic ties did not just survive the crisis — they emerged stronger. Looking forward, the challenges and opportunities are immense.
With the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement moving towards a fullfledged Free Trade Agreement, the AIBC’s expertise will be crucial in translating policy into practice. Its ability to build trust, foster innovation, and encourage long-term thinking makes it indispensable in the bilateral
A mark of honour, a measure of legacy
The King’s Awards and the Indian-Australian spirit of service
The 2025 King’s Birthday Honours have once again served not just as a ceremonial moment in Australia’s civic life, but as a powerful reflection of the nation’s evolving identity—one that is inclusive, multicultural, and forward-looking. Among the 830 awardees recognised for their service to Australia across sectors such as public health, the arts, education, advocacy, and government, eleven Australians of Indian origin were singled out for their distinguished and enduring contributions. Their presence on this prestigious list is not a coincidence—it is a testament to both the strength of Australia’s diversity and the deep-seated values of the Indian ethos that continue to guide their paths of public service.
These awards are more than individual recognition; they are a national acknowledgment of the collective impact made by people of Indian heritage on Australian soil. In many ways, the King’s Honours have become a measure of lasting value—an institutional yardstick that does not merely reward excellence but celebrates how excellence can be used for the common good. Whether in the field of medicine, community development, social justice, education, or cultural preservation, the honourees of Indian origin exemplify what it means to serve both the country of one’s birth and the country of one’s citizenship with equal devotion and integrity.
Take the example of Professor Gita Mishra, whose academic and research leadership in public health at the University of Queensland has led to improvements in healthcare outcomes for women across Australia. Or community advocate Krishna Arora, whose decadeslong work in Brisbane has created bridges between generations, cultures, and institutions. Their work is not limited to a narrow definition of success. It touches lives, empowers voices, and uplifts communities—often in ways that go unheralded until moments such as the King’s Birthday Honours draw public attention to them.
The Australian-Indian story
relationship.
In a world marked by strategic uncertainties and shifting alliances, the AIBC offers a model of consistent, valuedriven engagement. It is not just a chamber of commerce — it is a platform for building the future of the Australia-India partnership. As both nations look to diversify their economic and strategic ties in the Indo-Pacific, the AIBC’s work will remain central to ensuring that this vital relationship grows stronger, deeper, and more resilient with each passing year.
is deeply interwoven into the larger Australian narrative. With over 780,000 people of Indian descent now calling Australia home, the community has not just grown in numbers—it has matured into a vital contributor to Australia’s social, intellectual, and economic capital. From bustling metropolises to regional communities, the Indian diaspora has left its imprint, energising local economies, shaping public debates, and adding rich threads to the national cultural tapestry.
This year’s honours recipients are part of that broader movement— people whose lives reflect a balance between professional accomplishment and public duty, between cultural pride and civic responsibility. Their values echo the ancient Indian principle of seva (selfless service), which is not simply charity, but a sacred obligation to act in the interest of others. It is this principle— rooted in the Indian philosophical traditions of dharma (duty), ahimsa (non-violence), and vasudhaiva kutumbakam (the world is one family)—that continues to inspire many IndianAustralians to give back to society in profound ways.
What makes these honours particularly meaningful is that they come at a time when the global community is facing a range of complex challenges— climate change, public health crises, rising inequality, and social fragmentation. In such a climate, those who dedicate themselves to healing, building, teaching, and advocating are more than professionals—they are global citizens performing vital acts of service to humanity. And this year’s awardees reflect that reality. Their work does not stop at the borders of Australia; its effects ripple outward, influencing international research collaborations, diaspora initiatives, humanitarian responses, and cross-cultural dialogue.
Australia’s recognition of Indianorigin citizens through its highest civilian honours also reflects the growing importance of the India-Australia relationship. Once rooted primarily in trade and strategic alignment, this bilateral relationship is now increasingly shaped by peopleto-people connections. IndianAustralians have become cultural ambassadors in the truest sense— not appointed by governments, but chosen by circumstances, commitment, and community. Their work enhances mutual respect and understanding between the two democracies, reinforcing shared values such as tolerance, freedom, and the rule of law.
It is also worth noting that these contributions are not limited to any single generation. The Indian-Australian experience spans first-generation migrants who came with suitcases full of
dreams and second-generation professionals who carry dual cultural fluencies. Whether it is in the corridors of academia, the labs of innovation, the studios of the arts, or the grassroots of community action, Australians of Indian heritage are increasingly at the forefront of shaping what modern Australia looks like—and more importantly, what it stands for.
Recognition through honours such as the King’s Birthday list is vital not just for celebrating individuals, but for sending a message to wider society. It tells young Indian-Australians that their heritage is not a hindrance but a strength. It reminds Australian institutions that diversity, when truly valued and supported, can become a force multiplier for national progress. And it reassures the global Indian diaspora that the values they carry—of hard work, education, respect for elders, and compassion—are not only welcome but honoured.
Indeed, the significance of such awards stretches beyond personal pride and national gratitude. They serve as an ongoing dialogue between past and present, between migration and belonging, between heritage and integration. For every recipient of Indian origin who stands honoured today, there are countless others whose invisible work nourishes the social fabric of this country. The King’s Honours are also a tribute to them—a reflection of what Australia gains every day from the presence and participation of its Indian community.
As we look ahead to an increasingly interconnected world, the stories behind these honours offer a blueprint for global citizenship grounded in compassion, cross-cultural collaboration, and shared humanity. They remind us that borders may define geography, but it is values that define legacy. And it is legacy—not just lineage— that determines how we are remembered.
In this light, the King’s Honours are not just awards. They are mirrors, showing us who we are and who we can become. And as Australians of Indian origin continue to light the way— drawing from the best of both worlds—they strengthen not only the bonds between India and Australia, but the very foundation of Australia’s multicultural democracy.
Let us then not only celebrate these awardees for what they have done, but also support the systems, communities, and opportunities that enable many more to follow in their footsteps. For when one community rises, the whole nation moves forward. And when service becomes the highest calling, we all share in its reward.
Holding onto Chair: The many tactics of Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus
Dhaka: Muhammad Yunus's popularity is waning as the interim government faces a series of crisis, with Bangladesh's political landscape becoming increasingly complex. June marks the 10th month since Yunus assumed leadership of the country's state machinery as the Chief Advisor of the interim government — formed through the consensus of political parties, civil society, and the military following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina. It was widely expected that the interim government would serve a brief term, similar to previous caretaker administrations, with its primary responsibilities being efficient management of state affairs and facilitation of free and fair elections. In practice, however, the Yunus administration has failed to achieve either objective and has instead undertaken the broader task of state reform through the creation of various reform commissions.
Meanwhile, Yunus's policies and decisions have only exacerbated the challenges faced by the interim government amidst the chaotic conditions that have gripped the nation since August 5, last year. Despite this, Yunus appears to be navigating against the current of the country's political will. This raises a pertinent question — why is Muhammad Yunus still holding onto office?
Several key developments support this assertion. One such example is the enactment of unconstitutional amendments through the passing of ordinances such as the Cyber Protection Ordinance, amendments to the International Crimes (Tribunals)
Act, the Anti-Terrorism Act, and the Enforced Law Ordinance. These ordinances were criticised for being passed unilaterally without any public consultation.
More critically, these legislative moves reflect Yunus’s apparent political vendetta — namely, the marginalisation of the Awami League. Two significant developments further reinforce this view: firstly, the deteriorating state of press freedom in Bangladesh, and secondly, the imposed ban on the Awami League.
The Cyber Protection Ordinance, which replaced the stringent Cyber Security Act, was introduced by the interim government with the stated aim of strengthening cyber security. This move followed a period during which press freedom in Bangladesh had been severely eroded under the previous deposed administration. However, the new ordinance has demonstrated a similar tendency to suppress press freedom, as evidenced by the condemnation from rights groups over the revocation of press accreditation for journalists.
The retaliatory targetting of journalists critical of Muhammad Yunus and the interim government, documented by the Rights and Risk Analysis Group (RRAG), presents an alarming picture — approximately 640 journalists have been targetted over the past eight months, with 91 reportedly harassed or assaulted in May alone. The charging of journalists with terrorism and other criminal offences — mainly in connection with the July uprising and their alleged ties to the former
regime — has been widely criticised as a deliberate effort by the interim government to stifle press freedom. Contrary to the expectations of restored free speech following the July uprising, press freedom remains a critical concern, as highlighted by the latest global ranking from international human rights group Article 19, which categorised Bangladesh as a 'crisis' country for freedom of expression. The amendment to the AntiTerrorism Act, approved on May 11, introduced a provision enabling the prohibition of terrorism-related activities by individuals and 'entities'. Concerns had already emerged that this ordinance would empower the interim government with unchecked authority to suppress political activity, especially given its move to ban the 'activities' of the Awami League under pressure from certain political parties. Merely a day after the ordinance's enactment, the Awami League was officially dissolved — another unilateral measure implemented without public consultation.
Though welcomed by parties that had mobilised on the streets demanding this outcome, Yunus’s decision provoked strong international criticism and deepened domestic political divisions, with many viewing it as a violation of democratic norms carried out without due process. The politically driven violence targetting League supporters since Hasina's departure is well documented, and the ban is seen as a further escalation of such acts under a veil of impunity. These unconstitutional legal interventions have been
justifiably identified as the interim government's erosion of the country's core human rights and freedoms.
Muhammad Yunus’s proposal in April to establish a humanitarian corridor connecting to Myanmar's Rakhine region marks the latest instance of his administration's misjudgment. What distinguishes this issue from previous ones is the rare, unified protest and criticism it drew from all political parties — both established and emerging — arguably the first instance of such consensus since Hasina's removal. On one hand, concerns were raised about the geopolitical risks this corridor posed to Bangladesh's territorial integrity; on the other, questions were directed at the interim government's unilateral move to propose such an initiative — despite lacking the mandate — without consulting political parties. The proposal also fuelled suspicions that Yunus was favouring the interests of foreign powers at the expense of national sovereignty. Not only political parties, but even the Bangladesh Army expressed disapproval, further highlighting widening tensions with the interim government. The Army Chief firmly rejected the idea of any such "bloody corridor" and instructed Yunus to hold elections by December, prompting the interim government to ultimately withdraw the proposal.
The issue of elections has emerged as the most prominent point of contention against the Yunus administration. The intentional postponement of the national election has not only fuelled divisions among
political parties but also hindered meaningful progress in the state building process. Although the interim government initially announced national polls could be held by December 2025, the subsequent extension of the timeline to June 2026 has sparked suspicions and fears that Yunus is deliberately attempting to cling to power. The absence of a clear electoral roadmap — despite repeated requests from political parties — has intensified concerns that the interim government may further delay elections until the following winter. The political impartiality of the interim administration is increasingly under scrutiny, with many viewing Yunus as favouring the newly formed National Citizen’s Party (NCP), and suspecting that the postponement of the elections is a calculated strategy to give the NCP a strategic advantage in the forthcoming vote.
However, the broad consensus among political parties on the urgency of holding early elections — despite their ideological differences — signals a notable shift in the political landscape: time appears to be running out for Muhammad Yunus. The current political climate stands in stark contrast to last August, when Yunus was invited to lead the interim government. The people of Bangladesh are now demanding elections, seeking to exercise their democratic rights and facilitate a smooth political transition. It seems the Chief Advisor may have grown too accustomed to the power he holds and is now making desperate efforts to remain in office.
A walk across the bridge of resolve, PM Modi’s strong Chenab message
yet strategic, it was a bold declaration. In that symbolic stride, the Prime Minister wasn't just showcasing a feat of Indian engineering; he was delivering a bold message to those who have long sought to destabilise India through covert aggression and terror.
For over three decades, Pakistan and its terror network have engaged in a relentless proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir and also in other parts of India. From cross-border infiltration to radicalisation, they have aimed to keep Jammu and Kashmir and India in turmoil. And when the Pahalgam terror attack happened, India responded with Operation Sindoor -- with military resolve and diplomatic firmness.
from deterrence to direct action.
After the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, carried out by The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Pakistan-backed Lashkar-e-Taiba, India has made it clear -- neither the LoC nor Pakistani territory will remain untouched if terror originates from there.
The shift started with the 2016 surgical strikes, the 2019 Balakot airstrikes, the revocation of Article 370, and the May 7 Operation Sindoor. These have all marked a shift in India's strategic doctrine -- no longer defensive and reactive but proactive and assertive.
integration is not just a promise -- it is a mission.
The walk was also a reminder to every Indian watching that the fight against terror isn't only for the security forces to tackle, but it's also in our commitment to progress. Roads, tunnels, railways, and bridges -- these are India's new weapons of peace, built to empower. The PM's walk on the bridge just reflected this.
In that silent, deliberate stride was the assertion that the region will no longer be a theatre for conflict but a beacon of connection and progress.
adversaries, uplifts the national spirit, and sets the course for the future. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's walk across the Chenab Bridge -- the world's highest railway bridge -- holding the Tricolour high in his right hand, was one such moment.
Amid this operation, India continued with its developmental triumphs. The walk on the Chenab Bridge was a powerful signal to Pakistan, its allies, and the rest of the world.
Quiet but commanding, symbolic
By walking that bridge with the flag aloft, PM Modi asserted territorial sovereignty and also underlined a shift in India's policy
Through Operation Sindoor, New Delhi has set a new strategic red line -- if terror is Pakistan's state policy, it will be met with a visible and forceful response. PM Modi's solitary walk was a signal that India will no longer be held hostage by fear nor dictated to by those who trade in violence and chaos. It was also a message to the people of Jammu and Kashmir that New Delhi's commitment to development, stability, and
PM Modi's visit to J&K came exactly one month after Operation Sindoor, a meticulously executed mission that neutralised nine high-value terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistanoccupied Kashmir (PoK).
In retaliation, Pakistan resorted to heavy shelling at residential areas in Jammu and Kashmir and also indulged in drone raids across the whole of the western border. India then attacked 11

airbases of Pakistan, following which Pakistan raised the white flag and begged for a ceasefire.
Operation Sindoor wasn't just a tactical win. It was a strategic signal: that India's patience with terrorism emanating from Pakistan is not infinite and that every infiltration, every ambush, will be met with proportionate force.
By choosing to visit J&K after this operation and walk on the Chenab Bridge, which is just 133 km from PoK, PM Modi linked two critical narratives: the hard power of security and the soft power of development.
It reflected the seamless continuation of India's twin-track approach in Jammu and Kashmir
demonstrations and meditation practices aimed at encouraging a balanced and healthy lifestyle. The event also highlighted the role of community organisations
in spreading awareness of yoga's physical and mental health benefits.
The Consulate thanked all participants and partners and
-- crush the terror infrastructure while simultaneously empowering the region through unprecedented infrastructure and economic development.
This stands in stark contrast to Pakistan's approach to Kashmir: one rooted in radicalisation, violence, and diplomatic falsehoods. It is forcing the youth to die for a false narrative and an insane cause, and has kept the occupied part of Kashmir in poverty and underdevelopment.
PM Modi's walk across the Chenab Bridge wasn't just physical; it was psychological. It represented an India that is no longer looking over its shoulder but walking ahead with resolve, dignity, and confidence.
Holding the flag was a symbol of ownership of territory, of the future, and of the narrative. Leaders are often remembered not just for what they say but for what they do when it matters.
With the Tricolour fluttering against the Himalayan winds, PM Modi's walk on the Chenab Bridge was symbolic and historic.
For Pakistan, it was a warning that India will protect its territorial integrity and punish aggression with precision. For the people of Jammu and Kashmir, it was reassurance that they are seen, heard, and included. And for the rest of the world, it was a signal that India is prepared to lead not just economically but morally and militarily if required.

Canberra, June 8 (Australia India News Newsdesk)
Eleven Australians of Indian heritage have been recognised in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours for their outstanding contributions across public health, women’s empowerment, the arts, multicultural engagement, and community welfare. Their inclusion in the national list of 830 awardees highlights the growing role of Indian-origin Australians in shaping the nation’s social and civic landscape.
Leading the list is Professor (Dr) Gita Mishra, appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO)—one of the country’s highest civilian honours. An internationally renowned epidemiologist at the University of Queensland, Professor Mishra is known for her groundbreaking work on women’s health and life course epidemiology. As Director of the Australian Women and Girls’ Health Research Centre and president-elect of the World Endometriosis Society, her work has influenced public health policies and elevated Australia's global standing in medical research. Her AO adds to a small but significant group of Indian-origin scientists who
have received similar honours, including Professor Veena Sahajwalla and Dr Marlene Kanga. Among the honourees is the late Dr Sajeev Koshy, posthumously awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his lifelong service to public dental health and refugee communities. A respected endodontist, Dr Koshy championed equitable healthcare access and mentored many overseas-trained dentists. He had previously received an OAM in 2016 and was knighted by the Order of St John in 2021 for his humanitarian work.
Seven Indian-Australians were awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), recognising excellence in music, social advocacy, multicultural development, and education.
Melbourne’s Iyer Brothers— Ramnath and Gopinath—received the OAM for promoting Carnatic music in Australia for over five decades. Since migrating from Chennai, they have trained hundreds of students and helped popularise South Indian classical music through the Pichumani School of Carnatic Music.
Sydney-based Menaka Iyengar Cooke was honoured for her work in women’s empowerment,
in health, arts & community leadership
trauma counselling, and migrant advocacy. A survivor of domestic abuse, Cooke rebuilt her life and now serves as Director of the Indian Crisis and Support Agency. Her memoir Monsoon Woman and podcast Colours of Australia continue to inspire and empower migrant women across the country.

Two Indian-origin professionals were awarded the Public Service Medal (PSM) for their exceptional contributions to Australian government service.

Her architectural leadership has helped create secure, sustainable, and culturally sensitive spaces, including the award-winning Australian Embassy in Bangkok.
Dr Srinivas Bolisetty, a
neonatologist at the Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick, was recognised for his national leadership in neonatal care. His clinical work has improved outcomes for premature infants and set treatment benchmarks across Australia and New Zealand. He also played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic and has trained doctors in India and the Pacific.
The 2025 Honours list includes 581 recipients in the Order of Australia (General Division), with community service again emerging as the most recognised area. The youngest recipient this year is 19-year-old Scott Guerini from Perth, while the oldest is 101-year-old Henry Young from South Australia—both underscoring the enduring spirit of service across generations. Award recipients will be formally presented with their medals at ceremonies hosted by the Governor-General or state governors in the coming months. These honours reflect not only individual achievement but the deep and growing contribution of the Indian-Australian community to the nation’s progress and diversity.
Pure mountain magic at Tassie’s Cradle Mountain
By Dr Ram Mohan, Editor
I don't say this lightly, but Cradle Mountain is among the most beautiful locations I've ever visited. Something about it draws you in as soon as you get there. Perhaps it's those untamed, rocky peaks that seem like they belong in a storybook, the open silence, or the crisp alpine air. I was hooked, whatever it was.
I spent a couple of days hiking, wandering around, and just soaking in everything this little gem of Tasmanian wilderness has
to offer. And let me tell you — it’s absolutely magical.
One of my favorite trails was the Dove Lake Circuit. It’s a pretty straightforward loop, but the views? Next level. Imagine ancient pines, button-grass plains, and sights so breathtaking you find yourself stopping just to take it all in. Cradle Mountain towers in the distance like a gentle giant, sometimes shrouded in mist, other times glowing in warm light. Every time I looked up, it felt like I was in a living painting.
What really caught me off guard was how serene everything felt. Even with a few other hikers around, there’s this calmness that envelops you. I strolled along for quite a while, only hearing the soft whisper of the wind and the crunch of my boots on the trail. It was the kind of silence that encourages you to put your phone away, slow down, and just be present.
And then there was the wildlife. I stumbled upon a wombat — casually grazing by the path as
if he owned the place (which, honestly, he probably does).
Moments like that make Cradle Mountain feel not just wild, but vibrantly alive.
What really lingered in my mind was this feeling of being small — but in the best way. Sitting on a rock that overlooked Dove Lake, the world around me seemed bigger, slower, and softer. I found myself taking deeper breaths, worrying less, and smiling more. There’s something so healing about places like this, where
nature reminds you of what truly matters.
I walked away with tired legs, a camera full of snapshots, and a heart that felt a little more open than when I first got there. I know it sounds a bit over the top, but Cradle Mountain has that kind of magic.
If you haven’t been there yet, you need to put it at the top of your list. Go for the hikes, but stay for the peaceful stillness. Seriously, this part of Tasmania is worth every step. And me? I’ll be back for sure.
FICQ launches blanket drive to support Brisbane’s vulnerable during winter
Brisbane, June 14 (Australia India News Newsdesk)
As winter tightens its grip on Brisbane, the Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland (FICQ) has launched a blanket donation campaign aimed at supporting the city’s most vulnerable residents. The initiative calls upon member organisations and individuals to
contribute towards the collective goal of providing warmth and care during the harsh cold season.
The campaign, launched this week, aims to collect and distribute at least 100 blankets to people in need across Brisbane.
FICQ is urging each of its member organisations to donate at least one blanket, valued at $25, by the deadline of Sunday, 29 June
2025. However, supporters are welcome to donate more, as every additional contribution will help expand the campaign’s reach and impact.
The blanket drive comes at a time when many residents, especially those experiencing homelessness or financial hardship, struggle to cope with dropping temperatures and long, cold nights. With limited access to shelter and basic resources, the need for warm bedding becomes critical during this time of year.
FICQ is working closely with local charities and support services to ensure that the donated blankets are delivered efficiently to those who need them most. The drive reflects the community’s continued commitment to serving the wider society and embodies values such as compassion, selfless service, and social responsibility.
The initiative also highlights the positive role played by Queensland’s Indian community in contributing to the well-being of the broader population. By addressing an immediate and tangible need, FICQ is reinforcing its dedication to community welfare and multicultural solidarity.
With the deadline just over two weeks away, FICQ is encouraging prompt participation. The organisation believes that collective efforts, no matter how small, can lead to meaningful change when directed toward those most in need. Through this campaign, the Indian community in Queensland is once again demonstrating how unity and kindness can bring warmth to the lives of others during the coldest time of year.

Adelaide Street Tunnel reaches key testing milestone ahead of Brisbane Metro launch
Brisbane, June 12 (Australia India News Newsdesk)
Brisbane Metro’s muchanticipated Adelaide Street Tunnel has entered a critical phase, with live weekend testing now underway — marking a major milestone in the city’s public transport evolution.
For the first time, buses and Metro vehicles will begin driving through the newly completed tunnel as part of comprehensive weekend trials. Once open to passengers later this year, the tunnel is expected to carry over
1,390 services daily, significantly easing congestion in the CBD by shifting buses off surface roads and into the purpose-built underground link.
Testing will be carried out across 10 weekends, with up to 70 specialists working on-site to conduct essential commissioning tasks. These include activating smart software systems, trialling lighting and ventilation, and integrating public announcements and communications with the existing busway network. A total of 70 operational scenarios will be rigorously tested to ensure every safety mechanism and system functions flawlessly before public access begins.
To facilitate these works, the inner-city busway tunnel system will temporarily close on weekends, and several major stations — including Queen Street, City Hall/King George Square, and Roma Street — will
be unavailable from Friday night until 5am Monday morning.
During this time, services will be detoured to street level and replaced by Metro bus services, with potential timing changes of up to six minutes. The Ezymart inside City Hall will also remain closed during these works.
Council staff and signage will be available across the city centre to help passengers navigate changes and maintain connectivity. Passengers are advised to plan their journeys in advance using updated timetables on the Translink website.
The Adelaide Street Tunnel — the largest and most complex infrastructure piece in the Brisbane Metro project — will link the South East Busway to the Inner Northern Busway. Spanning 225 metres in length, between 16 and 20 metres wide, and up to 10 metres high, it is a critical link designed to transform the efficiency and reliability of public
transport across the city.
Cr Ryan Murphy, Civic Cabinet Chair for Transport, hailed the milestone as a significant step forward.
“This is a huge milestone for Brisbane Metro and a major step towards delivering faster, more reliable public transport for residents and visitors,” Cr Murphy said.
“For the first time, buses and Metro vehicles will drive through the new tunnel, putting this game-changing infrastructure to the test.
“By moving more than 1,390 services underground every day, we’re easing CBD congestion and freeing up space on city streets.
“We thank commuters for their patience during this important phase, with the end result to be more services, more often for Brisbane’s transport network.”
Scheduled Weekend Works: Testing closures will occur from
Friday midnight to Monday early morning across the following weekends:
June 20–23
June 27–30
July 4–7
July 11–14
July 18–21 (with Roma Street Station reopening briefly on July 19 for the Wallabies vs British and Irish Lions match)
July 25–28
August 1–4
August 8–11
August 15–18
August 22–25
Brisbane Metro’s Adelaide Street Tunnel is set to be a cornerstone in delivering a faster, cleaner, and more connected transport network, redefining how residents and visitors move across the city.
‘My heart goes out to every affected family’, Tendulkar condoles RCB stampede
Cricket legend and Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the horrific stampede at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, which claimed 11 lives and left 33 others injured. The incident turned what was a celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's historic maiden triumph in the Indian Premier League into a heartbreaking tragedy.
"What happened at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, is beyond tragic. My heart goes out to every affected family. Wishing peace and strength to all." Tendulkar said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Earlier, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh and opener
Aakash Chopra also mourned the tragedy and extended their condolences to the families of the victims.
"Heartbreaking news of a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, resulting in the tragic loss of lives and injuries to several cricket fans, has cast a dark shadow over the spirit of the game that unites millions across our nation," Harbhajan Singh wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
"My deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this unfortunate event. I stand in solidarity with them during this incredibly difficult time and pray for the speedy recovery of those who have been injured," said Harbhajan.
Aakash Chopra also expressed his shock at the horrific incident. "Speechless. Numb. A victory parade for an IPL win claims innocent lives. Heart goes out to the affected and their loved ones. " the former India opener and
noted commentator said in his social media post.
The stampede was reported outside Gate 2 of the stadium shortly after RCB players had reached the Vidhana Soudha to meet Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Confusion reigned throughout the day regarding the parade plans, with Bengaluru traffic police initially denying permission due to safety concerns. However, thousands of RCB fans had already gathered near the stadium, awaiting the arrival of the team, leading to an uncontrollable surge.
The crowd management, or lack thereof, turned fatal as barriers were breached and panic spread. Police were overwhelmed, and emergency services scrambled to contain the chaos. The injured were rushed to Bowring and Vydehi Hospitals.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of desperation, with people getting trampled and many unconscious by the time help arrived.
French Open: Alcaraz rallies to triumph over Sinner and clinch fifth Grand Slam
Carlos Alcaraz pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in Grand Slam history on Sunday, defeating Jannik Sinner in a fiveset epic to win the 2025 Roland Garros title.
The 22-year-old Spaniard triumphed 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(10-2), saving three championship points and becoming the ninth man in the Open Era to rally from two sets down in a major final.
The final, lasting five hours and 29 minutes, was the longest in Roland Garros history and a dramatic new chapter in the riveting rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner. Meeting in a major final for the first time, both players showcased world-class tennis, but it was Alcaraz’s grit that ultimately made the difference as per ATP.
Trailing 3-5, 0/40 in the fourth set, Alcaraz saved three championship points before storming back to level the match. After failing to serve out the contest at 5-4 in the fifth, he regrouped and dominated the match tiebreak, sealing the win under immense pressure.
The victory gives Alcaraz his second Roland Garros title and fifth major overall, maintaining a perfect 5–0 record in Slam finals. He also became just the third man this century—after Gustavo Kuerten and Rafael Nadal—to successfully defend a French Open crown.
Alcaraz now leads the Lexus ATP Head2Head series against Sinner 8-4 and extends his season win tally to a Tour-leading 37. With this win, he becomes the first player born in the 2000s to claim 20 tour-level titles.
Despite the loss, Sinner retains his position atop the PIF ATP Rankings with a healthy lead of 2,030 points.

This change creates a consolidated European leg of the season across the summer
MCC makes ‘bunny hop’ boundary catches illegal
Thedramatic, acrobatic boundary catches that have thrilled fans in recent years— most notably Michael Neser’s now-famous “bunny hop” in the Big Bash League—are set to become a thing of the past.
As part of an important law revision, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), custodians of the Laws of Cricket, has confirmed a significant update to the rule concerning boundary catches. This new version will be adopted in ICC’s playing conditions from later this month and officially enter the MCC’s Laws in October 2026.
The revision, which comes following a request from the ICC Cricket Committee, aims to address what many in the cricketing world have viewed as a growing inconsistency
between spectacular athleticism and fairness in the spirit of the game. The MCC noted that while recent interpretations of the law have enabled “some spectacular fielding,” they have also “created room for some unusual-looking catches that, to the majority of the cricketing public, feel unfair.”
The incident that accelerated the review was Michael Neser’s stunning catch in BBL 2023 for Brisbane Heat. Chasing a lofted drive from Sydney Sixers' Jordan Silk, Neser caught the ball just inside the rope but, realizing his momentum would carry him over the boundary, tossed the ball up mid-air. He landed outside the boundary, jumped again—while still airborne—palmed the ball back into play, then returned to the field of play to complete the catch.
Though legal under Law 19.5.2 at the time—which states that the fielder's last contact with the ground before first touching the ball must be within the boundary—Neser’s “bunny hop” sparked widespread debate. The MCC, in its official explanation, described the move as one that “fulfilled the law,” but added that it “felt like the fielder had—quite literally—gone too far.”

months, beginning in Monaco from June 5-7 and finishing in Spain, where Madrid will make its F1 calendar debut from September 11-13.
The championship then returns to Asia with the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix, ahead of a triple header in the Americas, before Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi close out the season.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, said, “2026 will be a new era for Formula 1 where we will witness a brandnew set of regulations for our sport, the cars and the engines that will be powered by 100% sustainable fuel.
Thousands of RCB fans had gathered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to participate in a felicitation function for the RCB team that won the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 title, ending the franchise's 18-year-long wait for the title.
The stampede was reported outside Gate 2 of the stadium shortly after RCB players reached the Vidhana Soudha to meet Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The crowd outside the stadium had been swelling for hours amid confusion over whether the victory parade would actually take place.
Many people have criticised RCB for going ahead with a felicitation function for its players while the victims were suffering in the hospitals. But the franchise said they had amended their program
"We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us.
"We urge all our supporters to please stay safe," RCB said in the statement released late in the evening.
The tragic scenes outside the stadium unfolded rapidly. As barriers collapsed, panic spread among the crowd. Police personnel, unable to control the surge, watched as many fans were crushed in the chaos. Emergency teams rushed the injured to Bowring and Vydehi Hospitals. Survivors described heartwrenching scenes—of people gasping for breath, unconscious bodies on the ground, and cries for help drowned in the commotion.
British Deputy High Commissioner evinces interest in Himachali handloom heritage
British Deputy High Commissioner, Caroline Rowett, on Monday visited the Bhuttico handloom cooperative in Kullu town as part of her threeday visit to the Kullu-Manali region of Himachal Pradesh.
During the visit, the UK delegation met Bhuttico’s management and interacted with artisans engaged in the creation of traditional Himachali handloom products.
Speaking on the textiles sector
under the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Rowett said, “UK businesses and consumers will also have increased access to tariff-free imports from India, with tariffs being eliminated on 99 per cent of Indian goods which could provide better choice, quality and affordability of a wide range of Indian products such as frozen shrimp, apparel and textiles.”
India and the UK concluded negotiations for the FTA last
month, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral economic ties.
Accompanying Political, Press and Projects Adviser for the UK government, Rajinder S Nagarkoti, the Deputy High Commissioner added, “The deal is expected to increase bilateral trade, worth 43 billion pound in year 2024, by 25.5 billion pound, UK GDP by 4.8 billion pound and wages by 2.2 billion pound each year in the long run.”
The UK-India investment relationship currently supports over 6,00,000 jobs across both countries. As of 2024, there are over 950 Indian-owned companies in the UK and over 650 UK companies in India.

Nagaland CM emphasises preserving, promoting rich traditions
Nagaland
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday emphasised the need to preserve, expand and promote the rich traditions of the state's 17 tribes and multiple sub-tribes.
Inaugurating a seven-storey facility to serve as a hub for Naga handloom, handicrafts, and cultural promotion, the Chief Minister also highlighted the cultural and economic importance of the new facility,
of state’s 17 tribes
calling it a "beacon of identity and opportunity".
The 7-storey facility of the Nagaland State Emporium Complex in Kohima is a landmark initiative to promote and preserve the rich handloom and handicrafts tradition of the state.
Rio said: "Our state’s diversity, embodied in over 17 major tribes, gives rise to a rich tapestry of customs, attire, and traditional artistry. Every motif and weave tells a story. We must preserve and promote these with authenticity and pride."
The Chief Minister further urged for proper documentation and quality control in the sector, noting the need to archive traditional songs, artefacts, textiles, and cuisines.
"Authenticity must not be diluted. Designs must be approved by tribal authorities before production. Let us protect the integrity of our culture even as we adapt for broader markets," he said.

Odisha govt planning to ban selling of meat, alcohol around Puri Jagannath Temple
TheOdisha government is mulling to soon impose a ban on selling non-vegetarian food items and alcohol around 2 km radius of the Jagannath Temple at Puri and along the Bada Danda (grand road), the bustling main street of the sacred coastal city.
Speaking to the mediapersons here, Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Sunday revealed that no alcohol shop or bar and the selling of non-veg food items will be allowed around 2-km radius of the temple. He also revealed that the government has started efforts to ensure the buildings facing Bada Danda (Grand Road) have a uniform architectural style featuring common height and aesthetic.
"We want to develop Puri as a pilgrim city for that we have started the process to gradually develop and ensure all the
buildings located along the Bada Danda have uniform height and uniform front elevation to give a common look. We aim to transform Puri into a dedicated pilgrim city, and as part of this vision, we have initiated the process to gradually develop and standardise all buildings along Bada Danda to ensure they have a uniform height and consistent front elevation, for uniformity in appearance.
"Similarly, we today took another decision that no alcohol shop and bar will not be allowed around two-kilometre radius of the Jagannath temple as well as on the Bada Danda. The selling of nonveg items will not be allowed in these areas as well," the Minister said.

Tripura CM seeks funds to begin seaplane service to boost tourism
To make more attractive the tourist destinations in the state for the tourists, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday has urged the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) to provide necessary financial assistance for the commissioning of a seaplane service at Narikelkunja in Dumbur lake in Gomati district.
The Chief Minister raised the proposal during the second meeting of the High-Level Task Force (HLTF) constituted by the DoNER Ministry under the convenorship of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for the promotion of tourism in the
northeastern region.
Dumbur Lake is a charming water body located 115 km south of Agartala. The beautiful lake is on the confluence of rivers Raima and Sarma. Boating facilities are available in Dumboor Lake. In one of the islands, ‘Narkel Kunja’ has been developed and is one of the best tourist destinations in Tripura.
Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Meghalaya Chief Minister and other task force members also participated in the virtual meeting held on Wednesday.
During the discussion, Saha emphasised the need for a strategic framework to attract
national and international investments by identifying highpotential areas and projects in the northeastern states.
He also underscored the importance of evaluating current investment practices, reviewing tourism policies, investment incentive schemes, and regulatory frameworks to create a more conducive environment for growth.
Highlighting the progress made since the first HLTF meeting, the Chief Minister shared several state initiatives. He noted that new home stay guidelines have been introduced to promote the tourism industry, with 48 home stays currently operational across different parts of the state and also emphasised that these home stays play a significant role in boosting tourism.
Saha also mentioned that a delegation led by the Regional Executive Director of the northeastern region and the Director of Agartala’s MBB Airport had recently visited Kailashahar Airport, now unused, as part of the initiative to restart regional air connectivity.

India’s tourism sector poised to cross Rs 22 lakh crore turnover in 2025: Report
India's travel and tourism sector is expected to contribute a staggering Rs 22 lakh core to the Indian economy in 2025, with employment in the sector likely to exceed 48 million as a surge in both foreign and domestic tourists drive growth, according to the latest report released by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).
International visitor spend is expected to reach Rs 3.2 lakh crore, while spending from domestic travellers is set to hit Rs 16 lakh crore during 2025, said WTTC president and CEO Julia Simpson.
She pointed out that the travel and tourism industry is a very significant employer in India, and
in 2024, an all-time high of more than 46 million jobs were created in the sector across India, which represents over nine per cent of total employment in the country.
The WTTC has forecast employment figures for 2025 and at 48.2 million and 63.9 million, in 2035.
Simpson termed 2024 a "truly incredible year" for travel and tourism in India, and said domestic travel spending was crucial in what was a postpandemic recovery, and the future looks "very bright".
She said India's travel and tourism sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, with international visitor numbers
Vande Bharat train between Katra, Srinagar begins today; slashes travel time to just 3 hours
Ina major boost to connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, regular services of the Vande Bharat Express between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra commence on Saturday.
The Northern Railway has confirmed that the semi-highspeed trains will operate six days a week, significantly reducing the travel time between Kashmir Valley and the prominent pilgrimage hub in Katra.
This development marks a transformative step in the region’s transport infrastructure.
The new Vande Bharat service will cut the travel time between Srinagar and Katra to just three hours, less than half of the current six to seven hours required by road.
Two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains, Train Nos. 26404/26403 and 26401/26402, will
now at record highs after a period of strong domestic reliance.
According to the data, in 2024, international visitor spending in India reached a record Rs 3.1 trillion ($36.8 billion) 2024, which is nine per cent above the previous pre-COVID-19 peak.
"We strongly support the government's plans to simplify the e-visa process. While visaon-arrival and e-visa systems are in place, reciprocal policies and long delays for key markets like the US, where appointments are reportedly unavailable until 2026, continue to hinder tourists. Making it easier to visit India is one of the fastest ways to unlock further international arrivals and spending," she stated.
Domestic travel remained the vital force with spending soaring to Rs 15.5 lakh crore ($185.6 billion), which is 22 per cent above pre-COVID levels.
The spending from both domestic and international travellers led to another record, with travel and tourism's contribution to the Indian economy reaching almost Rs 21 lakh crore in 2024, which is 6.6 per cent of the national GDP, she added.

Australian researchers develop brain training game for drug-free pain relief
Sydney, June 4 (IANS) Australian researchers have developed a new interactive game, showing early promise as a non-invasive, drugfree alternative for managing chronic nerve pain.
The project, called PainWaive, trains users to regulate abnormal brain activity linked to neuropathic pain, Xinhua news agency reported.
Developed by researchers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), the game uses a headset to monitor brainwaves in real time while players engage with a mobile game that rewards
healthy brainwave patterns, offering a potential home-based replacement for painkillers such as opioids.
Three out of four participants reported significant pain reduction after four weeks of use in a recent trial. Their relief was comparable to or greater than what is typically achieved with opioid medication, the team found.
The game is based on disrupted brainwave activity in people with nerve pain, particularly changes in the thalamus -- a key relay centre in the brain.
The technology helps users retrain abnormal brain activity using mental strategies like relaxation or positive imagery, said Sylvia Gustin, professor at UNSW. The findings are published in the Journal of Pain.
“Participants felt empowered to manage their pain in their own
environment. That’s a huge part of what makes this special,” said Dr Negin Hesam-Shariati from UNSW’s NeuroRecovery Research Hub.
Participants used a low-cost EEG (electroencephalogram) headset and tablet-based game at home, with remote monitoring by researchers.
Designed using 3D printing and open-source parts, the headset costs around $193.7, far cheaper than commercial systems, and uses wet electrodes to target the brain's sensorimotor cortex for accurate pain-related readings, PainWaive's design prioritises accessibility for those with limited access to conventional treatments, Gustin said. She added that recruitment is underway for two larger trials targeting chronic spinal pain and neuropathic pain from spinal cord injuries.
Healthy lifestyle can boost metabolic health even without weight loss: Study
Jerusalem, June 9 (IANS) People can improve their health through dietary and lifestyle changes even if they do not lose weight, according to an international study.
The research, conducted by the universities of Ben-Gurion (Israel), Harvard (US), and Leipzig (Germany), focused on individuals described as "weight loss resistant" -- those who adopt healthy habits but struggle to shed pounds, Xinhua news agency reported.
“We have been conditioned to equate weight loss with health, and weight loss-resistant individuals are often labeled as
Asthma
failures,” said lead author Anat Yaskolka Meir, postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard Chan School.
“Our findings reframe how we define clinical success. People who do not lose weight can improve their metabolism and reduce their long-term risk for disease. That’s a message of hope, not failure,” Meir added.
Published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, the study challenges the longstanding belief that weight loss is the primary sign of a successful diet. Researchers found that even participants who did not lose weight showed measurable improvements in key health indicators.
The study tracked 761 adults between 18 to 24 months. All participants followed lifestyle changes without taking supplements or medications and were assigned to healthy diets.
Participants also received free gym access and exercise guidance.
By the end of the trial, approximately one-third of the participants had not lost weight, despite closely following the programme. However, they showed improvements in metabolic health, including higher levels of "good" HDL cholesterol, lower levels of leptin (a hormone primarily produced by fat cells), and reductions in abdominal fat, confirmed through MRI scans. Researchers also identified 12 genetic markers that may influence whether a person is likely to lose weight through lifestyle changes, an insight that could help personalise future diet plans. The findings suggest that healthy eating and exercise can provide significant health benefits even without weight loss, including reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes, the researchers said.

Scientists find gene mutation that links iron deficiency with Crohn’s disease
New York, June 8 (IANS)
Biomedical scientists have discovered that a genetic mutation associated with Crohn’s disease can worsen iron deficiency and anemia — one of the most common complications experienced by patients with inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD.
The study led by scientists at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine in the US — performed on serum samples from IBD patients — reported that patients carrying a loss-of-function mutation in the gene PTPN2 (protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 2) exhibit significant disruption in blood proteins that regulate iron levels.
This mutation is found in 14-16 per cent of the general population and 19-20 per cent of the IBD population. A loss-of-function mutation is a genetic change that reduces or eliminates the normal function of a gene or its product, a protein.
While IBD primarily affects the intestines, it can have effects beyond the gut. Iron deficient anemia is the most prevalent of these effects, contributing to chronic fatigue and reduced quality of life, particularly during disease flare-ups, said the study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
“This discovery sheds light on a critical mechanism that links a patient’s genetics to their ability to absorb and regulate iron, which is essential for maintaining healthy blood and energy levels,” said Declan McCole, a professor of biomedical sciences at UCR who led the study. “Our findings offer an explanation for why some IBD patients remain iron-deficient despite oral supplementation.”
When the researchers deleted the PTPN2 gene in mice, the animals developed anemia and were unable to absorb iron effectively. The team found this was due to reduced levels of a key ironabsorbing protein located in the intestinal epithelial cells — the cells responsible for taking up dietary nutrients.
“The only way the body can obtain iron is through intestinal absorption from food, making this discovery particularly significant,” said first author Hillmin Lei, a doctoral student in McCole’s lab.
Fermenting legumes, pulses can boost antioxidant, antidiabetic properties: Study
New Delhi, June 7 (IANS) Love to consume legumes and pulses? Fermenting them can help raise their antioxidant levels, as well as raise their ability to fight diabetes, according to a study.
Food scientists at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, US, identified the optimal fermentation conditions for pulses --the dried edible seeds of legumes -- that increased their antioxidant and antidiabetic properties and their soluble protein content.
Pradesh and other parts of the country.
The distribution of 'fish prasadam', which began at 10 a.m., will continue for 24 hours.
Members of the Bathini Goud family administer the "wonder drug" on 'Mrigasira Karti', (during the first week of June) which heralds the onset of the monsoon.
A yellow colour herbal paste prepared by the family is placed in the mouth of a live 'murrel' fingerling, which is then slipped through the throat of the patient.
In the study, the team fermented pulses obtained from varying concentrations of black beans, black-eyed peas, green split peas, red lentils, and pinto bean flour. The fermentation was done using the bacteria Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v as microorganisms.
The results showed that antioxidant activity increased by up to 83 per cent and their capacity to regulate Type 2 diabetes markers increased by 70 per cent. Fermentation also increased the amount of soluble protein in these food items.
Red lentils and green split peas showed the greatest improvements in antioxidant scavenging activity and protein solubility. These also demonstrated the greatest modulation of two enzymes that improve insulin metabolism.
Lp299v is a probiotic strain "containing microorganisms that support gut health," explained first author Andrea Jimena Valdés-Alvarado, a graduate student at the varsity.
"After fermentation, it remains in the digestive process. It will not only preserve the fermented product that you're consuming, but it will also produce these peptides or amino acids that are more easily absorbed than the intact protein in the pulses," Valdés-Alvarado said.
Further, Lp299v is also known to reduce inflammation, boost immunity, and enhance iron absorption, the team said, in the paper published in the journal Antioxidants.
"These pulses contain between 18 per cent and 25 per cent goodquality proteins that can be used alone or as ingredients in other food products. We need to find adequate processing conditions and motivate the food industry to use them in dairy beverages or meat substitutes," said Elvira Gonzalez de Mejia, Professor of food science from the varsity.

the importance of maintaining healthy and beautiful nails, especially during the summer months. Don't let the sun and heat take a toll on your nail health; follow these expertrecommended tips to keep your nails looking fabulous.
Use the Right Tools
Using the right tools is crucial for maintaining nail health. Avoid metal cuticle pushers, as they can cause damage and increase infection risks. Instead, opt for wooden or rubber cuticle pushers. Additionally, always use sharp, clean nail clippers and files to prevent nail splitting and peeling.
Chase the sun, not the damage: Smart skin care choices for summer
As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, many of us eagerly embrace the warmth of summer. However, the need for diligent skin care comes with the joys of outdoor activities and beach vacations.
Before diving into skin care tips, it's essential to understand the damaging effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to many skin concerns, including sunburn and premature ageing.
"One of the most effective ways to shield your skin from sun damage is sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating to ensure comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, and ears, and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating," says Mansi Sharma, founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess.
Hydration is key. Summer heat can take a toll on your skin, leading to dehydration and a loss of moisture. Mansi recommends
to combat the heat by staying hydrated from the inside out. She says, "Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Additionally, incorporate hydrating skincare products into your routine, such as lightweight moisturizers and serums formulated with hyaluronic acid or glycerin."
While sunscreen provides crucial protection, it's not the only line of defence against the sun's rays. "Consider covering up with lightweight, breathable clothing, hats, and sunglasses to provide additional protection for your skin and eyes. Opt for tightly woven fabrics and dark colours for optimal sun protection," adds Mansi. "When possible, seek shade during the sun's peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when UV radiation is at its strongest, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Take breaks from direct sunlight by relaxing under a beach umbrella or finding shelter in a shaded area."
The founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess also suggests that while selecting skincare products for summer, opt for formulations that cater to the specific needs of sun-exposed skin. Mansi says, "Look for products enriched with antioxidants like vitamins C and E, which help neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure. Incorporating a gentle exfoliant into your routine can also help slough off dead skin cells, revealing a fresh, radiant complexion."

My savings were getting drained, my finances were taking a hit and so much more."
