Grace Health is excited to announce that it has been awarded $600,000 as part of Kentucky's Behavioral Health Expansion (BHE) initiative. As one of only eight health centers in the state to receive this grant, Grace Health will use the funds to expand critical behavioral health services in both school-based health settings and clinics. This award is part of a larger national investment by the federal government to integrate mental health and substance use disorder treatment into primary care.
In September, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), announced $240 million in nationwide awards to community health centers These awards aim to enhance mental health and substance use disorder services at over 400 centers nationwide, serving over 10 million people Grace Health’s $600,000 grant is part of this significant effort to improve behavioral health care
"Access to behavioral health care is essential for communities of color and underserved groups,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra "HRSA-funded health centers have a strong track record of reaching underserved populations, and this funding will increase access to the vital behavioral health services needed by entire communities."
The two-year BHE grant, effective from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2026, will enable Grace Health to add 12 full-time staff members. These new team members will include mental health providers in schools and clinics, substance use disorder treatment support staff, and community health workers. Their contributions will be critical in meeting the growing demand for mental health and substance use disorder services in the community.
Grace Health staff from several clinics united to share uplifting messages of hope and encouragement, helping spread the powerful reminder that no one has to face their battles alone. CHALK THE WALK: SUICIDE CHALK THE WALK: SUICIDE AWARENESS AND PREVENTION AWARENESS AND PREVENTION

Grace Health joined health centers across every U S state, territory, and District of Columbia from August 4 to 10 to celebrate National Health Center Week (NHCW)
The federal government funded the first neighborhood health centers in the 1960s Since then, the Health Center Program has become a key part of the nation’s health care system Health centers like Grace Health combine medical, dental, mental health, substance use, and other services to meet the needs of each patient regardless of their ability to pay
In 2023, more than 31 million people relied on HRSA-funded health centers for care, with about 90% of these patients having incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. Even though health centers treat sicker people with lower incomes, those patients have better outcomes at a lower cost.
Health centers are also on the front lines of the opioid crisis, are answering the call for increased access to mental health services nationwide, and are part of the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative.
Recognizing the tremendous impact that health centers like Grace Health have in their communities, Corbin Mayor Suzie Razmus joined us to proclaim August 4-10 National Health Center Week in Corbin.
We are immensely grateful for leaders like Mayor Razmus, who work with us to help build stronger, healthier communities. We look forward to continued collaboration with service area leaders and beyond to meet the needs of southeastern Kentucky people.
