In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at fostering local talent and enhancing community ties, Grace Health has partnered with Union Commonwealth University in Barbourville, Kentucky, to launch its first-ever internship program for marketing students. The collaboration began in 2023 when Rebekah Riggs, MSHPP, PR Specialist at Grace Health, and Mike Wynn, Community Programs Director, met with representatives from Union Commonwealth University to explore ways the two organizations could connect to benefit the local area. From this fruitful meeting, the concept of a marketing internship emerged
Rebekah Riggs, who arranged and supervised the internship, spearheaded the initiative with enthusiasm and dedication In January, the program welcomed its inaugural intern, Taryn Mills, a senior Media Communications major from Union and a Barbourville local Taryn seized the unique opportunity to become the first Grace Health Integrated Marketing Intern
Taryn expressed her excitement about the internship, noting the difficulty of finding a program that matched her major in southeastern Kentucky She eagerly embraced the chance to gain a deeper understanding of the marketing field, opting to complete a double internship This meant she spent 16 weeks with Grace Health instead of the typical 8, allowing her to fully immerse herself in the experience.
Under Rebekah's expert guidance, Taryn developed a wide range of valuable skills. She learned to operate a DSLR camera, mastered lighting techniques, and honed her composition and framing abilities. This provided the opportunity to be a second photographer at the spring pinning ceremony (page 19) where she assisted Riggs and the site videographer, Natalie Lorimer with Evergreen Productions (pictured below). Taryn expanded her social media management knowledge, gaining proficiency in following a brand guide for content creation, writing for specific audiences, and engaging in creative design. Additionally, she excelled in event management, making significant contributions to the 13th Region Tournament at the Corbin Arena, one of Grace Health's biggest spring sponsorship events.
Upon completing her internship, Taryn graduated with honors from Union Commonwealth University in May. Her time at Grace Health provided a wealth of practical experience and invaluable insights into the marketing industry.
"We are incredibly thankful to have Taryn join our team," said Rebekah. "Her dedication, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn were remarkable. I can't wait to see where her journey takes her next."
Grace Health is proud to have launched this internship program and looks forward to continuing its partnership with Union Commonwealth University. This initiative not only benefits the students by providing real-world experience but also strengthens the community by fostering local talent and creating new opportunities for collaboration.

The Patient Support Services (PSS) Expansion Project at Grace Health signifies a transformative milestone in our dedication to comprehensive patient care.
With the addition of 5,500 sq. ft. to our existing 12,000 sq ft facility, this expansion goes beyond mere space, embodying our commitment to enriching the patient experience and delivering holistic support alongside medical treatment.
The project features 12 private workstations, 41 cubicles, and over 600 sq. ft. of training and meeting space, all designed to foster collaboration and efficiency.
By consolidating all patient support services into one location, we will enhance interdepartmental synergy, create streamlined communication, and elevate the standard of patient care.
This initiative also reinforces our mission to cultivate a compassionate and inclusive healthcare environment, ensuring patients feel supported, empowered, and valued throughout their healthcare journey.
Through investments in patient support services, we aim to improve health outcomes and enhance the overall quality of life for patients and their families.
Ultimately, the expansion
of PSS reaffirms our steadfast commitment to serving as a beacon of hope and healing in our community.
We are enthusiastic about the positive impact this expansion will have, ensuring every individual receives the care, support, and resources essential for their well-being
Grace Health looks forward to the profound benefits this growth will bring to our patients and the community at large.
Much of this project will be completed by the end of 2024 with many team members moving into their new work spaces in late July.
This scholarship commemorates the memory and enduring influence of Kay Campbell, a dedicated nurse practitioner who devoted her life to nursing. Even as she fought cancer, Kay remained steadfast in her service to patients at the Grace Health clinic in Wooten, Leslie County, Kentucky, showcasing her unwavering dedication to her profession.
The scholarship is designed to empower and motivate senior high school students in the Grace Health service area who are passionate about nursing. It encourages them to pursue excellence in their field and to consider returning to southeastern Kentucky to help address the region's healthcare provider shortage
At 9:16 a.m. on Monday, January 1, Sydney Van Norstran welcomed Taytum Blaire into the world. Taytum, delivered at Baptist Health Corbin by Grace Health provider Dr. Misty Thompson, was the first baby born in the new year for the hospital and Grace Health. Baby Taytum weighed 5 pounds 11.7 ounces and is a precious bundle of joy.
We are thankful that Sydney and her family trusted us with their care and are excited to be a part of Taytum’s start in this world.

Nick Miller, Patient Access Representative, Medical Campus
When COVID hit, I lost my job in medical research and started working for FedEx, which brought me from Toledo, Ohio, to Corbin. Without insurance and unsure how to get medical care, my dad took me to Grace Health, having heard good things from friends in the area.
I was confused and anxious, but a front desk employee walked me through the paperwork and explained the sliding scale fee, making my visit affordable The medical team addressed my long-term issues with kindness and clarity, something I had never experienced before.
Inspired by their care, I applied to work at Grace Health and joined the same office that had helped me. Now, I work with the Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program, a cause close to my heart due to personal connections to addiction. I help patients navigate their schedules and access transportation, building strong relationships along the way.
Helping patients as Grace Health helped me is the most rewarding job I've ever had, and I'm proud to be part of this team
