Butterfly, Butterfly... „We delight in the beauty of the butterfly but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty” – Maya Angelou
Did you know that the biggest butterfly in the world measures 11 inches in size? Do you really know how many stages a butterfly must go through before becoming a butterfly? Nowadays we are so caught up with our everyday life, that we forget to take a break and enjoy the wonder of nature and little moments in the world. Over the past few weeks, we had some special guests at Villa Glückskind. Furry caterpillars crawling and eating in their butterfly habitat. We took the time to discover the magi-
cal changes a butterfly goes through before it is ready to spread its wings and explore the world. Every morning, we observed the caterpillars to see if we already noticed some differences. After a while the caterpillars got bigger and bigger which meant they were ready to build their cocoon. This stage of their life cycle took them about 5 to 6 days. We waited patiently until the first butterfly appeared. In the meanwhile, our kindergarten teachers had prepared a lot of activities for us which were
related to this topic. We made caterpillars with fingerprints, butterflies with symmetrical paintings, learned a counting rhyme, butterfly dance, and completed a butterfly food sensory challenge. After almost three weeks of wonder, the day had come where we had to say goodbye to our little friends. We were all a little sad, but we knew it’s for the best and that they are very important for our natural environment. Luisa Kreter (Fotos: Luisa Kreter und Alexandra Horn)
