SPANISH SIN PENA: LATINOS LEARNING SPANISH 6

W

endy Ramírez is Latina but she didn’t speak Spanish growing up. However, Wendy realized she can make more money if she was bilingual. Her personal struggles with Spanish motivated her to start her own program “Spanish Sin Pena,” an online space for Latinos to learn Spanish.

Spanish Sin Pena wants Latinos to not feel judged or ashamed so they can learn Spanish and be able to connect with their culture and relatives, according to Ramírez. She said it will give people more professional opportunities in their career to be bilingual.

Ramírez said, “It’s important for Latinos to speak Spanish because of that connection and cultural knowledge you feel on a personal level to your own background that other people don’t have.

Then there is the other level, which allows you the opportunity to do so much more like travel and communicate with different people that opens more professional opportunities.”

From East Los Angeles, Ramírez knew how it felt to be embarrassed not to speak Spanish in a Chicano environment.

During her college years, she made it her mission to learn it when she studied abroad in Mexico City at UNAM

(Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), which led to future opportunities down the line. Her goal of this program is to assure Latinos they are not alone and how fun learning Spanish can be.

Latinos who do not speak Spanish feel totally left out and looked down upon by other Latinos from their background, Ramírez explained. Some are not even able to speak to other relatives or feel like a fraud when they are around them since they can’t speak the language despite looking like them. It is important now more than ever for Latinos to speak Spanish as the language is on track in the United States to have the most Spanishspeakers by 2050, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

However, a big reason why some people do not know how to speak the language is due to their family’s immigrant background and if they were even spoken to in Spanish growing up. 97% of Latino immigrant parents speak Spanish to their child, but it declines to 71% for secondgeneration Latino parents, according to the Pew Research Center.

Spanish Sin Pena tackles this issue head-on with their first emphasis on addressing the shame aspect, especially during the beginner level classes. It is difficult at first, but lead facilitator Ana Abreu describes the different types of experiences she has heard from participants in her class.

“Everybody has a different story right.

I’ve heard stories of classrooms where teachers tell students why they don’t speak Spanish to family members saying you said it wrong over and over, they’re corrected [by others]. So they feel ashamed while other family members just never spoke in Spanish to them, so we have group discussions and just talk about it at first, ” said Abreu.

Abreu who teaches most of the virtual classes explained how they work, as they are set from level one to five depending on your fluency. Classes start with six payments of $197 and meet up twice a week for 45 minutes at a time for a full year, which depends on what season you register. A majority of the program’s participants are in California, but clients are scattered all around the U.S. in metropolitan areas like New York and Chicago with a handful of them from outside countries.

The program offers way more than just conversations and lessons to learn Spanish. There are virtual music and cooking classes that translate all the words and recipes from English to Spanish. Students are also able to make their own podcasts about their experiences with Spanish, along with book clubs.

“I have connected myself to a new community that I did not know before,” said Selina Morales, a full-time participant of the program. “Every time

I do it [join the class], I feel like I spent a great hour of my life like I really like invested in myself and invested in my culture. It has a choose your own adventure feel to it.”

“I only know one other person in Philadelphia that’s doing it [the program] but maybe I haven’t met the others yet.

“I want to continue serving the community the way that we have with professional adults, but somewhere in the future we would like to work more with the youth to expand our program further,” said Ramírez.

ASESORANDO “UNDOCUPROFESSIONALS” Por Natalia Ángeles Pestañas

E

n el 2020, Sharet García lanzó “Undocuprofessionals”, un programa gratuito de tutoría en línea que conecta aprendices indocumentados con mentores también indocumentados que tienen carreras profesionales. Junto con el programa de tutoría, García utiliza plataformas digitales como Instagram para proporcionar información de noticias y oportunidades para y sobre indocumentados en todo el país.

“Quería ayudar a mi comunidad tanto como me ayudó a mí, y sabía que si abría una plataforma como esta, eso también me empujaría a trabajar más duro”, comentó García.

García, de 37 años, es una defensora indocumentada y madre soltera que se volvió la jefa de su familia en el 2020.

Mientras buscaba maneras para generar ingresos, García tenía una pasión por buscar un espacio que proporcionara recursos durante y después de la universidad a adultos jóvenes indocumentados.

“No hay ninguna plataforma donde puedas encontrar a otros profesionales indocumentados, nuestra comunidad necesita saber que existen para sentirnos poderosos”, explicó García.

Con el reciente mandato de la corte suprema en la Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA, por sus siglas en inglés), el panel del Tribunal de Apelación del distrito cinco ha paralizado a DACA. El miedo y el estrés ahora infestan aún más a la comunidad indocumentada.

Pero, espacios como “Undocuprofessionals”, permiten darle a la comunidad un sentido de esperanza.

un impulso de confianza y te empuje más para lograr tus objetivos”, dijo Kyra Mitchel, profesional de justicia penal y mentora de “Undocuprofessionals”.

A través de su programa de tutoría, los aprendices son capaces de acceder a oportunidades estatales y nacionales. “Lo que me encanta de este programa es que es completamente en línea, así los aprendices pueden conectar con sus mentores desde la comodidad de su hogar y enterarse de oportunidades desde donde sea”, dijo Mitchel. Este programa ayuda a los adultos jóvenes indocumentados a escribir sus currículums con la ayuda de un profesional, a la par de crear interconexiones laborales en su campo laboral.

Cuando el programa inició en el 2020 “se registraron 200 mentores y alrededor de 150-200 aprendices”, contó García. Ahora este cuenta con 700 a 800 mentores y aprendices juntos. Este programa es de la comunidad para la comunidad.

“Ningún mentor es pagado, se me hace muy loco que tanta gente quiera ser uno”, comentó García, quien, con gratitud, espera que sus mentores sean pagados en el futuro. “Para que nosotros como organización iniciemos cosas como pagarle a nuestros mentores, nosotros como comunidad debemos primero de dejar de hacer trabajo gratis”, dijo García.

Lo que hace único a este programa es que todos sus mentores son también indocumentados, o tienen a un miembro familiar en la misma situación. Esto es muy significativo para los aprendices, ya que les brinda comodidad a los adultos jóvenes para hablar de sus casos.

“Nunca me siento cómoda al hablar de mi estatus migratorio con alguien que no es indocumentado, no saben los recursos y oportunidades limitadas que tenemos”, comentó Mitchel. Muchos no están conscientes de la dificultad y el coraje que conlleva hablar de estos temas con otros y los muros que perseguir sus sueños trae consigo.

“Me hubiera gustado saber de un programa como este antes, siento que me intimida el buscar orientación por ser una estudiante indocumentada de primera generación”, contó Diana Espinosa, una estudiante de negocios de segundo año en el colegio comunitario de Cerritos.

Ella también afirmó que la ansiedad de buscar recursos en la misma universidad es también un problema.

“Los recursos escolares son muy limitados, solo he ido una vez al centro de indocumentados de mi escuela porque los consejeros no fueron de gran ayuda”, comentó Espinosa.

En situaciones donde los programas como “Undocuprofessionals” no son introducidos, los centros de ayuda a indocumentados alientan todos los servicios que tiene a su alcance.

Los estudiantes universitarios en los 23 campuses de las universidades estatales de California tienen algún tipo de soporte a través de los llamados “Dream Centers”. “Nuestro Dream Success Center responde de inmediato, sea lo que necesiten nuestros estudiantes. Tener lideres jóvenes es importantes para así poderles preguntar por lo que necesitan ellos y su comunidad”, dijo Jordi Conde, coordinador principal del centro en CSULB. Dado que “Undocuprofessionals” aún está haciendo crecer a su plataforma, es fundamental analizar los recursos que están disponibles. “En el centro proveemos comida, prestaciones de computadoras y calculadoras, libros de preparación para exámenes a quienes no pueden costearlos y un espacio donde se sientan vistos”, comentó Conde. Pero

el centro también está consciente de las áreas en las que puede mejorar: “Somos un centro que sigue creciendo, pero igualmente debemos considerar el tipo de apoyo que se les pueda brindar a aquellas personas que ya no están inscritas, ya que se vuelve un poco complicado cuando varias personas deben estar completamente inscritas para utilizar estos servicios en todo su esplendor”, explicó Conde.

Esta organización también ha encontrado desafíos que pone sus metas en pausa. “Nos falta el apoyo de otras organizaciones de apoyo a indocumentados, cuando me contacté con algunas estas me rechazaron e ignoraron”, comentó García. Las complicaciones para encontrar financiamiento para la organización se derivan de cómo se ve a la comunidad indocumentada. “No se nos dan muchas oportunidades gracias a la ideología del supremacismo blanco, donde se nos ve a los indocumentados como los menos informados”, dijo García.

De cara al futuro, “Undocuprofessionals” busca nuevos enfoques sobre cómo hacer crecer su plataforma y hacerse oír. “Las escuelas se están enterando de que proveemos trabajos a la juventud indocumentada”, explicó García. Ahora existe un optimismo en la comunidad de indocumentados para dar a relucir sus habilidades y talentos. “Un programa como este es inspirador para la generación más joven de estudiantes indocumentados, pero también les da esperanza a la generación actual de que si otra persona indocumentada pudo, yo también”, dijo Espinosa.

TENANTS EMPOWERING TENANTS

Mayra Fernanda García-Cortez was home alone when she heard the knock.

There was something posted on the screen door of the apartment she had been living in since she was a little girl.

García’s heart sank as she read it.

A 60-day notice to vacate the premises.

A few months prior to this jolting announcement, García-Cortez and her family were struggling with a rat and roach infestation in their apartment–most likely stemming from their recently-moved neighbor’s unkempt apartment.

When nothing was done to resolve it after submitting multiple complaints, García-Cortez and her family took matters into their own hands and called code enforcement.

After finding multiple health code violations, code enforcement fined the apartment management and demanded they fumigate the unit. It took two visits from code enforcement for management to listen.

As renters, García-Cortez and her family were within their rights to call code enforcement to ensure their concerns were addressed and their health was not put at risk.

The 60-day notice, however, seemed to García-Cortez like a clear repercussion for doing so.

“They were trying to use substantial remodeling as a tactic to evict us from our unit as a form of retaliation for calling code enforcement on them,” García-Cortez said.

After getting in touch with local tenant advocacy group, Long Beach Residents Empowered (LIBRE), García-Cortez and her family were informed that the document they received was not a legal eviction notice and that the owner had no basis to kick them out.

Before LIBRE, they were ready to self-evict - thinking it was their only option- García-Cortez and her family were then able to advocate for themselves and keep their apartment.

Communications director Sylvana Uribe defines LIBRE as a “rent advocacy group that works with renters and helps them

advocate for themselves against tenant harassment, unsafe living conditions and unjust evictions.”

Inspired by her experience, García-Cortez is now an organizer and leader at LIBRE and she is determined to make sure other tenants are aware of their rights and well-equipped to fight back.

“My mom and I continued to volunteer for the organization with the thought that we wanted to prevent as much displacement as possible within the city and make sure that something like what happened to us doesn’t happen to others,” García-Cortez said.

The organization is divided into different campaigns. GarcíaCortez’s organizing work falls under Neighborhood Tenant Organizing. Through this campaign, LIBRE can connect directly with tenants who reach out to them about issues such as harassment and evictions.

This particular branch of LIBRE also hosts monthly tenant council meetings which serve as workshops to teach tenants their rights. They also offer a space for them to share their experiences and help one another.

According to Uribe, around 20 people attend per meeting.

“That’s what we want to see, [for] folks to take ownership of the space, but also build this solidarity, where they’re able to build community with one another,” Uribe said.

For people who want to stay involved in the fight for tenant protection, LIBRE offers Leadership Academies. There, they learn about different organizing tools such as how to canvas or door knock and how to speak to other neighbors and elected officials.

The past academy had about 20 graduates and will return this spring.

LIBRE also seeks to equip tenants with the skills to advocate for themselves at a larger policy level. As communications director, Uribe works directly with tenants to prepare them to speak at city council meetings and with the press. She also helps define and simplify the complicated jargon-filled documents tenants have to deal with.

A current policy-level campaign of LIBRE’s involves advocating for funding from the city for the right to counsel. This campaign would

connect people to cost-free legal assistance–especially given the anticipated wave of evictions as COVID-19 protections come to end on March 31.

García-Cortez said that LIBRE has been tirelessly working towards pushing the city to adopt permanent protections, because without them, people who owe rent or are not on the lease, suffer the risk of being evicted.

“It’s not going to be an eviction wave anymore. It’s going to be an eviction tsunami,” García Cortez said.

Through their Stay Housed Long Beach campaign, LIBRE has partnered up with the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles.

However, as Uribe mentioned, a lot of lawyers they are working with are at capacity.

“That’s something we want to advocate for, more funding so that we can increase that capacity and connect people with legal help because the chances of someone staying in their home when they have access to legal services is a lot higher,” Uribe said.

Despite the strides and impact LIBRE has made in the community, the limited amount of staff and resources such as funding makes it difficult for change to be made at as large a scale as Uribe and García-Cortez would like.

“One thing that we have to ground ourselves in is that we can’t win every single case,” Uribe said.

They are also only currently able to offer resources in English or Spanish but Uribe said they would love to expand to offering them in Tagalog and Khmer to be better accessible to Long Beach’s culturally diverse community.

Regardless, Uribe is confident in LIBRE’s ever-growing state. She said the organization is in a constant state of rebuilding to become the best it can be.

“Right now, we are one of the few organizations that are solely focused on renter protections,” Uribe said, adding that understanding the communities one is serving is crucial to recreating something like what LIBRE offers.

“It’s emotionally difficult, but that itself is very rewarding,” GarcíaCortez said.

AUMENTANDO EL CAMINO LATINX AL POSGRADO Por Anasazi Ochoa

Criada por trabajadores agrícolas inmigrantes en el estado de Washington, la Dra. Janette Mariscal se crió con los principios del valor del trabajo arduo y la perseverancia mientras cosechaba manzanas y cerezas.

La historia de la Dra. Mariscal no es poco común, y su misión es ayudar a los académicos que tienen una experiencia de vida similar, a estar lo más preparados posible para ingresar a la investigación de posgrado.

Hoy se dedica a garantizar que los estudiantes de color como ella tengan las mismas tres letras junto a su nombre.

Actualmente, menos del 1% de los latinos de Estados Unidos obtienen un doctorado y pocos utilizan ese doctorado en el mundo académico. Un estudio de 2019 del Hispanic Journal of Law and Policy reveló que solo el 4.6% de los profesores titulares en las instituciones de doctorado son hispanos/latinos.

El programa McNair TRiO busca ayudar a los estudiantes universitarios de primera generación y de bajos ingresos que finalmente desean obtener su doctorado. La misión del programa es que McNair se esfuerce por centrar el desarrollo de la identidad racial y étnica en la investigación y la preparación para la escuela de posgrado.

Desde el síndrome del impostor hasta la educación financiera, los recursos disponibles para los académicos de McNair van más allá de la accesibilidad del campus y, en cambio, de la dura realidad de los problemas mayores que enfrentan muchos estudiantes de color en la academia.

A través de sus propias experiencias personales y de haber sido becaria de McNair, la directora Mariscal se compromete a ayudar a los estudiantes a navegar su carrera de posgrado.

“Tenemos que saber que dentro de los sistemas educativos, para estar en un espacio tienes que tener un título, tiene que haber una carrera que te respalde y esa carrera es tu capital cultural”, dijo la Dra. Mariscal acerca del largo impacto a largo plazo de un título de posgrado.

“Para mí, sabía que al haber obtenido un doctorado después de la licenciatura, al entrar a cualquier espacio me iban a cuestionar, porque era joven y latina”, agregó la Dra. Mariscal.

En CSULB, hay estudiantes que trabajan para cambiar esos números.

Ada Reyes es una estudiante de último año que está por graduarse y actualmente es una becaria de McNair, que planea dedicar su vida a ayudar a estudiantes como ella.

“Siento que mis experiencias sociales y personales me han permitido aprovechar los recursos disponibles para mí”, dijo Reyes sobre el apoyo que ha recibido no solo a través de McNair TRiO, sino también en CSULB. “A veces no se trata de que no estén allí, es simplemente no estar consciente de ellos”.

Como hija de inmigrantes salvadoreños, Reyes siempre ha visto la educación como una prioridad.

Como estudiante amputada de sociología, Reyes desea evaluar cómo los estudiantes transferidos con discapacidades adquiridas navegan su nuevo estado, el apoyo obtenido de varias instituciones y cómo es ese apoyo brindado.

La mentora docente de Reyes, la Dra. Janet Muñiz, es profesora de sociología en CSULB.

Como miembro de la facultad, el trabajo de la Dra. Muñiz se enfoca en los efectos de la gentrificación en su ciudad natal de Santa Ana. Parte del papel de la Dra. Muñiz como mentora es conectar a Reyes con una red de académicos de McNair, quienes pueden ayudar en su investigación de posgrado.

“Me basé mucho en la tutoría de otros estudiantes de color que estaban antes que yo”, dijo la Dr. Muñiz de la cadena de tutoría informal que existe en la academia. “Y comparto esta información con las personas que están terminando ahora”.

A pesar de la red de académicos que los doctores Mariscal y Muñiz otorgarán a Reyes, la existencia de latinos con título académico atado a su nombre es escasa.

“Siempre hago este chiste de que todos los latinos con un doctorado se conocen”, dijo Muñiz sobre el estado de la representación latina en la academia.

“La mayoría de las personas en una carrera que se especializan en sociología [en CSULB] son latinas, y hay dos profesoras latinas de tiempo completo en el departamento [de 41 docentes], incluyéndome a mí”, agregó la Dra. Muñiz.

La demografía dentro del departamento de sociología es solo una indicación del problema mayor de la falta de representación en el campus.

En el recuento oficial de docentes titulares (tenured) y titulares en proceso en CSULB, la cantidad de docentes hispanos/latinos en el semestre de otoño de 2021 fue del 10.8 %, una cifra contundente en comparación con el 49.5 % de estudiantes hispanos/latinos matriculados en el mismo semestre.

El porcentaje de estudiantes hispanos/latinos aumentó al 51.2 % en el otoño de 2022.

En cuanto al número de facultades de color, la Dra. Muñiz se mantiene optimista del futuro: “Cualquier oportunidad que tenga para apoyar la trayectoria de potenciales futuros profesores de entornos subrepresentados es excelente”, dijo la Dra. Muñiz sobre su trabajo como mentora de McNair. “Dado que recién empiezo a ser profesora, creo que esto va a ser interesante incluso dentro de 5 años”.

Para estudiantes como Reyes, la red que ha construido incluso antes de comenzar sus estudios de posgrado refleja la posibilidad de hacer que las probabilidades jueguen a su favor.

“McNair me ha dado la confianza para no solo creer en mí misma, sino también en las cosas que puedo lograr”, dijo Reyes a los posibles académicos que pueden dudar en postularse. “No tienes esa oportunidad si nunca lo intentas”.

Raised by migrant farmworkers in Washington State, Dr. Janette Mariscal was brought up on the principles of the value of hard work and perseverance while picking apples and cherries.

Today she is dedicated to ensuring that students of color like her have the same three letters by their name. The McNair TRiO program seeks to help first generation, low-income undergraduate students who wish to ultimately pursue their doctorate degree.

It is the mission for this program that McNair strives to center racial and ethnic identity development in research and graduate school preparation.

From imposter syndrome to financial literacy, the resources available to McNair scholars stem beyond campus accessibility, and instead from the harsh reality of greater issues many students of color face in academia.

Through her own personal experiences and a former McNair scholar herself, Director Mariscal is committed to helping students navigate their postgraduate career.

“We do have to know that within education systems, to be in a space you have to have a title, there has to be a degree that backs you up and that degree is your cultural capital,” said Dr. Mariscal of the long-term impact of a postgraduate degree.

“For me, I knew that having pursued a PhD after undergrad, coming into any space I was going to

be questioned, because I was young and Latina,” said Dr. Mariscal.

Dr. Mariscal’s story is not uncommon, and her mission is to assist scholars who have similar lived experiences to be as prepared as possible entering graduate research.

Currently, less than 1% of U.S. Latinos obtain a PhD, and few utilize that doctorate degree in academia.

A 2019 study from the Hispanic Journal of Law and Policy revealed that only 4.6% of tenured faculty at doctoral institutions are Hispanic/Latino.

At CSULB, there are students working to change those numbers.

Ada Reyes is a graduating senior and current McNair scholar, who plans to dedicate her life to helping students just like her.

“I feel like my social and personal experiences have allowed me to take advantage of the resources available to me,” said Reyes of the support she has received not only through McNair TRiO, but at CSULB, “Sometimes it’s not about them not being there, it’s just not being aware of them.”

The daughter of Salvadoran immigrants, Reyes has always viewed education as a priority.

As a sociology major and an amputee, Reyes wishes to assess how transfer students with acquired disabilities navigate their new status, the support obtained from various institutions and

what that given support looks like.

Reyes’ faculty mentor, Dr. Janet Muñiz, is a sociology professor at CSULB. As a faculty member, Dr. Muñiz’s work focuses on the effects of gentrification in her hometown of Santa Ana. Part of Dr. Muñiz’s role as a mentor is connecting Reyes with a network of McNair scholars, who may be able to assist her in her postgraduate research.

“I relied a lot on getting through by the mentoring of other students of color who were ahead of me,” said Dr. Muñiz of the informal mentoring chain that exists in academia. “And I share this info with people who are finishing now.”

Despite the network of academics that Drs Mariscal and Muñiz will grant to Reyes, the existence of Latinos with an academic title tied to their name is few and far between.

“I always make this joke that all Latinos with a Ph.D. know each other,” said Muñiz of the state of Latino representation in academia.

The demographics within the sociology department are just one indication of the greater issue of lack of representation on campus.

In the official headcount of tenured and tenure-track faculty at CSULB, the number of Hispanic/Latino faculty in the Fall 2021 semester was 10.8%, a stark number in comparison to the 49.5% of Hispanic/ Latino students enrolled in the same semester. The percentage of Hispanic/Latino students increased to 51.2% in Fall 2022.

As for the number of faculty of color, Dr. Muñiz remains optimistic of the future: “Any chance I get to support the trajectory of potentially future faculty from underrepresented backgrounds is great,” said Dr. Muñiz of her work as a McNair mentor. “Since I am just starting to be a professor, I think it’s going to be interesting even 5 years from now.”

For students like Reyes, the network that she has built before even beginning her postgraduate studies reflects the possibility of making the odds work in her favor.

“McNair has given me the confidence to not just believe in myself, but in the things that I can accomplish,” said Reyes to prospective scholars who may be hesitant to apply. “You don’t get that chance if you never try.”

M

aribel Reyes no es muy fanática del café, pero no cambiaría su trabajo en Wrigley Coffee por nada del mundo.

Sin embargo, en su primer día, y durante sus primeros meses, estaba nerviosa.

Reyes no había estado trabajando durante los últimos tres años mientras ella y su familia luchaban por salir adelante después de ser desalojados. Al mudarse de albergue en albergue, quedarse en casas de parientes, con un hijastro de ocho años y una hija de tres años que cuidar, Reyes preferiría quedarse en casa.

“Family Promise” es una de las organizaciones sin fines de lucro con las que se asocia el programa Oportunidad para un Empleo Significativo para Personas sin Hogar (“HOME” por sus siglas en inglés). Latinos are now 44.5 % of LA County’s unhoused population, according to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s latest homeless count.

“HOME” trabaja con personas sin hogar en situaciones actuales o pasadas, así como con aquellas que corren el riesgo de serlo. El programa tiene contratos con empresas y empleadores en Long Beach en las cuales los participantes pueden ser ubicados para completar 200 horas de trabajo no-subsidiado mientras buscan un empleo subsidiado.

Por eso a Barajas le gustaría contar con una trabajadora social en el programa que pudiera prestar ayuda más específica a quien lo necesite.

Dado que “HOME” es un programa de asistencia laboral, las personas interesadas en ser parte deben presentar los documentos de identificación necesarios, como el número de seguro social y las tarjetas de identificación.

La probabilidad de que las personas sin hogar pierdan sus documentos o se los roben con el tiempo es bastante alta y es uno de los principales desafíos que enfrenta Medina.

Esto también significa que las personas indocumentadas no pueden beneficiarse del programa.

Medina también deseó que hubiera suficientes fondos y personal disponible para comercializar mejor el programa.

Como una pequeña organización sin fines de lucro, dijo que no hay mucho que puedan hacer para promover y hacer que otros conozcan los recursos que ofrecen.

HOTEL HOUSING FOR THE HOUSELESS

By Briana Méndez-Padilla 66-year-old Undre Porter said that he had never really been one to just take things; he struggled with reaching out for help, even when being unhoused, for the same reason.

“I think it has a lot to do with ging, my mom and dad raised me and my sisters to be independent,” Porter said.

Porter has been unhoused for about 5 years, but it wasn’t until earlier this year that he allowed himself to get help.

Porter recalls being at the hospital after an undisclosed injury when a woman from across the room overheard him saying that he had nowhere to go and put it upon herself to help as much as she could.

“I don’t even know how she heard me when she was in another room, but she did and she was like ‘don’t you let him go,’ I honestly think she was an angel,” Porter said.

The woman, with help of the doctor, referred Porter to the Holiday Inn on Atlantic Boulevard, in Long Beach, a Project Homekey location where Porter and his beloved dog, Sassy, have been living since April 2022.

“It’s just really nice to have your own room and I’m just so grateful, especially because they accepted me and my baby,” Porter said.

As per data from the Long Beach Health Department, there are currently 3,296 people experiencing homelessness. Of those, 2,287 are living in unsheltered situations and 1,282 in emergency shelters and transitional housing.

Project Homekey is a “statewide effort to sustain and rapidly expand housing for persons experiencing or at risk of homelessness,” according to the California department of housing and community development.

During the pandemic, the Department of Housing and Urban development along with the state created Project Roomkey, as a resource for unhoused folks most vulnerable to Covid-19 across LA county. When the program first started, nine of the sites were going to be used as temporary housing sites.

Long Beach locations purchased as part of project Roomkey include the Holiday Inn Porter is currently staying at, the Best Western on Long Beach Boulevard and the Motel 6 on 7th street.

As the pandemic has dwindled, the focus of the program has shifted from being Covid-19 centered to an attempt to combat chronic homelessness. Hence, Project Homekey was created to provide additional resources and housing opportunities quickly.

All Roomkey locations are currently being used as shelters but the Holiday Inn and Motel Six are about to go through conversion to permanent housing through the county according to Long Beach Homeless Services Bureau Manager, Paul Duncan. He said there isn’t a current timeframe for the conversion of the Best Western hotel but the city plans to start sometime in the next couple of years.

“Our plan is to eventually convert; we don’t quite have a timeline yet but we’re working on developing our plans on what that conversion will look like and the timeframe,” Duncan said.

According to the city of Long Beach, the number of affordable housing units has increased with 124 units being added since 2020 in part thanks to state Covid relief funds granted throughout the pandemic. In August 2022, the city was awarded a $30.5 million grant to further fund several homelessness combat efforts like Project Homekey as well as the

building of new tiny houses.

Some of Long Beach’s most recent hotel purchases include the purchase of the Luxury Inn—labeled as a nuisance hotel due to its high number of safety calls—for $16.6 million.

One of the biggest challenges Project Homekey faces according to Duncan is the cost and time burden of renovating the hotels. He mentioned that it was easier to purchase motels before the pandemic but that asking prices have gone up since the project started as motel owners talk among each other.

“Most people are not turning [the opportunity for shelter] down, what they’re saying is ‘I don’t feel comfortable living in a space where it’s a bed, and a room with 30-40 other people and I’ve got to share facilities with them,’” Duncan said.

Additionally, since most of these motels are not in the greatest condition or not designed with shared living amenities such as a kitchen, the conversion to permanent housing becomes a slower and more expensive process.

“These are all things we’re assessing and finding the right-fit building that is really conducive or the right plan that is going to allow for the capacity

Despite the challenges, Duncan believes Project Homekey changes some preconceived myths that people don’t want shelter.

Project Homekey offers not only shelter but a sense of independence and individuality as residents have a space that is entirely their own.

“If we have a wide range of settings that meet different needs, we’re able to engage people that maybe weren’t all that interested in the past,” Duncan said.
