Raised on a farm in Michigan and working in construction his whole life, McCurley has found the show to be a home away from home throughout his adult life. He attended his first show in 1963 and has made it back to each and every one in the 60 years that have followed.

“There are so many interesting people I’ve talked to; it’s an educationjusttotalktoallofthem,”saidMcCurley.“Ithinkeverybodythat is around heavy equipment should go to that show.”

ConExpo is a family reunion of sorts for McCurley. Several of the companies he has worked for in the past have booths at the show, and helookedforwardtoreconnectingwiththeirrepresentativeswhenever and wherever he possibly could during the week.

In addition, his own children and grandchildren were in Las Vegas attending the show. However, McCurley recalled his fondest memories of attending ConExpo were with his wife in years past.

“Shewenttoeveryshowwithmewhenshewasalive, andshereally enjoyed them, too,” he said.

Now that he has made it to this year’s ConExpo, McCurley said he has nothing but love for North America’s largest construction trade show and would like to attend the show moving forward for as long as it makes sense for him to do so.

McCurley said it’s impossible to attend six decades worth of ConExpos without at least having some advice to share with newcomers.

“You’ve got to have a good pair of shoes and make sure you go to see the whole thing, because if you don’t, you’re missing a lot,” he said.

Logging steep slopes presents safety risks as well as challenges that affect production.

Overcoming both has been a mission for DC Equipment, manufacturer of the Falcon Forestry Equipment (FFE) Falcon Winch Assist, which recently saw completion of its 200th unit with the help of Modern Machinery Inc.

“The 200th is one of a significant number of units DC Equipment has built during the past several years,” said Territory Manager Russ Smith, who was instrumental in bringing the Falcon WinchAssist to the Pacific Northwest.

“Customers love the ability it gives them to more productively and safely log steep ground.”

Modern Machinery equipped the 200th unit the same as it did with others it has set up, starting with a previously used Komatsu PC290LC excavator.Afterremovingthecounterweightand thoroughly inspected the machines, Modern service technicians mount Falcon’s winch on the back of the excavator, which gives it approximatelythesameoperatingweightasatraditional excavator.

The winch houses approximately 1,640 ft. of 1 1/8-in. swaged rope with nearly 80 tons of breaking strength. The rope runs through rollers on the excavator’s main boom and a tension monitor where the boom and arm meet senses the load.

Uphill, Downhill

Excavators equipped with the Falcon Winch Assist serve as the “uphill” machine in the mechanization process. They sit stationary with no operator and the bucket is dug into the ground for added stability.

“ThePC290givesusagreatbasemachinetostart with because it’s stout with plenty of capacity,” said Smith. “At the same time, at about 80,000 pounds with the WinchAssist, it’s easy to haul.”

The FalconWinchAssist is designed for constant tension and attaches to a log loader, feller buncher, harvester or skidder to allow those “downhill” machinestoworkonsteepslopeswhereitwouldbe dangerous to operate without cable assist.

Acontrolboxandantennaaremountedinsidethe cab of the excavator for communication with the downhillmachine.Operatorsusethewinchtomove uphill and downhill, controlling it with foot pedals. Winch mode, tension settings, manual pay out or wind in of rope and emergency stop are controlled via joystick in the harvester. A control screen dis-

plays rope tension, length of rope payed out and additional important information.

“We have two locations that build the units and install the controls, and usually put four to five technicians on them,” said Modern Machinery Equipment Coordinator Matt Moore. “If they see anything during inspection that needs to

be addressed, it’s taken care of.

“In addition to the Winch Assist components and the bucket, all are equipped with a thumb. That, along with the bucket, gives customers added versatility because they can use the machine for other tasks as needed.”

No Longer Just Trendy

Modern Machinery and DC Equipment representatives say the Winch Assist System increasingly is contributing to the logging industry’s change to mechanization and less work done by hand. That’s largely being influenced by felling machines and the support of winch assist methods on steeper slopes.

An example of this can be seen in New Zealand (where DC Equipment is based) where mechanization for ground-based felling has increased from 50 to 90 percent between 2009 and 2019. This movement is happening across the globe, including in Modern Machinery’s territory.

“It’s no longer a trend, but an adoption in the industry because loggers see that it’s the most effective and practical method for most steep-slope situation,” said Smith. “We are looking forward to building more of these units going forward, and we encourage anyone who does this type of work, or is interested in adding steep-slope logging to contact us for more information.” 

Komatsu, Cummins Partner for Integrated Monitoring

Unplanned downtime from equipment and engine maintenanceatminescanbeverycostly.Tocreatemorevaluefor customers,KomatsuandCumminshavepartneredtodeliver a new, integrated remote equipment monitoring solution designed to reduce unplanned stoppages, accelerate maintenance execution, and extend component life and maintenance intervals.

By sharing equipment health and performance data over common infrastructure, and collaborating on health analytics, both companies can access the same secure data and develop joint analytics and insights. Data is collected on a single device and all actions are managed in a shared case management system, allowing experts from both teams to work remotely with a customer’s maintenance staff.

Integrating machine OEM support from Komatsu with expert OEM engine insight from Cummins allows both to proactively monitor asset health and optimize maintenance management, designed to help mining customers:

ï avoid unplanned maintenance

ï predict maintenance needs

ï decrease production costs and downtime from maintenance

ï increase asset utilization

Less Hardware = Improved Maintenance Time, Reduced Costs

Inthepast, equipmentandenginedatacollectionandgeneration involved multiple data logging devices, each with theirownindividualremotedataconnection.Customerstypically had separate devices, which created separate data silos for subsystems on a single haul truck.

With multiple data flows, mines have less control over where the data goes and who has access, whereas a single piece of hardware can simplify data flow and may also enhance cybersecurity. By removing the need for duplicative communication infrastructure and multiple points of connection, the Cummins and Komatsu solution can offer new insights to help mining managers make better decisions faster.

Less hardware also reduces maintenance time and

machine downtime because there is less hardware to install, and there are fewer components to maintain.

Simplified, ImprovedAnalytics

This solution is designed to improve asset protection and reduce harm to fleets, to give customers a simplified and improved experience for asset health case management, onboarding and analytics. Instead of subscribing to separate solutions from Komatsu and Cummins, this new solution offers mines a more cost-effective approach to monitoring.

“With this partnership, we are tying two high-value services together,” said Greg Lanz, general manager, technology interoperability of Komatsu. “By combining data analytics from both Komatsu and Cummins, we can collaborate to help our customers maximize total asset performance and health.”

“Ouraimwiththisintegratedsolutionistodeliverarobust best-in-class solution to help our customers succeed,” said Dana Miller, director digital and service solutions of

Cummins.

Effective asset management solutions don’t just provide more data about a site’s equipment and engines, they help ensure that data is useful and organized so stakeholders can be more proactive. For example, understanding where a truck is in the mine, what its payload is, and which operator is driving it, all provide useful context to analyze why the engine is behaving a particular way.

By combining engine and non-engine data, mining customers will be able to see all of their equipment data in one place, withinsightsandrecommendationsforaholisticview of the machine.

“The collaboration between Cummins and Komatsu on broader data sets opens opportunities for us to build more complex analytics and insights,” Lanz added. “The secret sauce is combining the expertise of both teams.” For more information, visit www.komatsu.com and cummins.com. 

DEVELON Tool Carriers NowAvailable in NorthAmerica

DEVELON, formerly known as Doosan Infracore, has introduced its next-generation tool carrier models — the DL200TC-7 and DL250TC-7 — in the United States and Canada. These new models round out the -7 Series wheel loader introductions for the company.

Like their -5 Series predecessors, the DL200TC-7 and DL250TC-7 tool carriers have a parallel-lift linkage system that gives operators precise control over a variety of attachments in applications other than loading, such as lift- and place-type applications. The tool carrier’s lift arm design keeps the attachment level, allowing for faster lifting and placing of materials.

“We’ve incorporated performance and design elements, likeenhancedvisibility,intoour-7Seriestoolcarrierstohelp operators on jobsites,” said Bill Zak, wheel loader product manager.“Ourtoolcarriermodelscanimproveanoperator’s abilitytoload, unloadandmovematerials, reducingtheneed for additional equipment and enhancing productivity.”

Versatility on the job site is important to wheel loader operators, especially when they want to change attachments quickly.TheDL200TC-7andDL250TC-7maybeequipped with an optional hydraulic quick coupler to easily change non-hydraulic attachments, including buckets — general purpose, light material or multi-purpose — and pallet forks.

Increased Visibility, All-Day Comfort

With increased visibility down the center of the parallellift arms, operators can clearly see the ground, truck or work area in front of the machine. The tool carriers also feature increasedglassarea, fullglassdoor, largemirrorsandoptional LED work lights to improve overall visibility.Astandard rearview camera provides an additional view of the machine’s surroundings and appears on the 8-in. Smart Touch display inside the cab.

With the exclusive Transparent Bucket option, operators can get a supplemental view “through the bucket” from an in-cab display. The wheel loader cab offers relocated, intuitivecontrols, andtheSmartTouchscreendisplaysallimportant information as well as the rearview camera view.

The heating and air conditioning system has been redesigned from previous wheel loader generations to help operators stay comfortable year-round.

More Power, Improved Precision

The hydrostatic transmission in the DL200TC-7 tool carrierdeliversmorepower, betterfuelefficiencyandimproved precision. Key features of the hydrostatic drive include:

ï Dynamic Braking: When operators remove their foot from the travel control pedal, the system will automatically reduce the flow of oil, causing the machine to slow. This meanslesswearonthebrakesandreducedenergyconsumption.

ï Speed Management: Operators can adjust their maximum travel speed independently from engine speed.

Operators also can use the convenient creep function to easily fine-tune their loader’s position without pressing the accelerator pedal.

For more control when doing precision work, the variable speed control offers seven preset speeds within first gear. And using the traction control management system, operators can easily adjust traction force to match jobsite conditionsforefficiencyindigging, stockpilingandloadingapplications.

Lift Large Loads With Ease

The DL200TC-7 and DL250TC-7 offer stronger, larger axles that help lift larger loads, and an optional additional counterweight is available for added lifting performance. The new models also feature wider radiator fin spacing and a standard reversible fan that clears dust, dirt and other large debris to help prevent clogging.

The wheel loader’s durable box frame and articulating design deliver enhanced rigidity and load distribution. A deeper front fender provides additional wheel coverage that helpsprotectthewindshield, andtheoptionalrearfullfender improves stability.

High-Lift Configuration

Ahigh-lift configuration is available for the two tool carriers, providing additional dump height for processing plants, scrap and recycling facilities and agricultural operations.Added dump height is particularly useful for tool carrier operators who regularly load trucks and need additional lift height to efficiently dump material into the truck. The optional high-lift configuration provides an additional 18 in. of dump height.

Standard Technology Features

Operators improve their productivity with standard technology features on the -7 Series tool carriers, like the telematicssystem.Itmakesiteasyforownerstomonitortheirfleet and manage maintenance to reduce operating costs.

Usingasmartphone, tabletorcomputer, ownerscancheck machine location, operating hours, fuel usage, engine idle versus work time, error codes, engine and hydraulic oil temperature and various other data points.

An improved Load Isolation System boosts wheel loader stability while moving, which can reduce cycle times, increase productivity and boost fuel efficiency.

software will be more than $2 trillion this year, much of it financed.

“Slower economic growth underlies the trends this year,” said Ralph Petta, ELFA president. “Equipment acquisition continues to drive supply chains across all U.S. manufacturing and service sectors.”

Though the association forecasts “sluggish growth” this year, it views as “a solid jumping-off point for 2023” the 12percent annualized growth in capital spending last year.

“Rising interest rates, high inflation and other economic uncertainties are expected to weigh on investment,” ELFA reported.

The association predicts 4.2 percent growth in equipment and software investment this year. Tighter financial conditions are foreseen as well. “Interest-rate levels are expected to rise above 5 percent this year.”

That number has the potential to go higher as the federal government fights inflation.

“Even if rate increases slow down or pause later in the year, the Fed’s shrinking balance sheet will contribute to tighter financial conditions,” said ELFA.

Paying for Those Purchases

At 55 percent, the majority of equipment acquired will be financed, the association maintains.

“Protectionfromequipmentobsolescence, taxadvantages and cash-flow optimization will be the top drivers for end users to finance.”

As a result, contractors will turn to automation and technology to offset labor costs this year.

“Additional benefits will be increased economic productivity and downward pressure on inflation in the long term,” said ELFA.

Supply-chain backlogs will ease up, opening doors for equipment acquisitions. Because those backlogs have returned to their historical averages, said ELFA, delivery delays or shortages will improve.

“Acombination of cooling demand and improving public health have given suppliers a chance to catch up,” the association said. “In addition, global supply-chain disruptions have triggered a paradigm shift.”

Many large organizations are “near-shorting” or “reshoring” elements of their supply chains, in fact. The slowgrowth economy will have many categories of equipment thriving, said ELFA, as residual pandemic effects will spur demand.

Post-pandemic hybrid work arrangements will dictate the acquisition of office equipment, computers, software and communications technology. And the trending commitment bycompaniestocutgreenhousegaseswillgrowdemandfor green projects. That means construction of wind turbines, solar energy systems, microgrids and battery storage facilities will grow.

The five-year distribution program for the legislation passed by Congress will boost demand for off-road equipment. Globally, an estimated $18 trillion of climate-focused equipmentisforecasttobefinancedbetweennowand2030, according to ELFA.

“If you are thinking about developing or enhancing your fleet sustainability management strategy, this is the year,” said Tony Lourakis, of Fleet Complete.

“Working toward a greener fleet is something your competitors are most likely already looking into or have adopted,” added the telematics company CEO.

Technology Is King

The Association of Equipment Distributors (AED) has formed a trends list of its own. Construction fleets this year will be most affected by technology.

Online sales and rentals, vehicle electrification, connected job sites, parts and equipment rental in particular will be front and center.

“Whatever happens in the auto industry is coming to construction equipment dealerships,” said Garry Bartecki, Illini High Reach CFO, commenting on the growing trend in online sales of automobiles, which reached 30 percent of the market two years ago.

Back then, dealers said in a survey they believed it was likely that OEMS will implement a direct-to-consumer model in five years.

“They expect fully digital sales — including the actual purchase—fornewequipmenttoincreasefrom7percentto 29 percent,” noted theAED survey.

Digitalrentalswereexpectedtoincreasefrom7percentto 33 percent within that same timeframe.

“We definitely see things moving in this direction,” said Jefferson Yin, director of new business models of Volvo Construction Equipment.

The global off-highway electric vehicle (EV) market size is expected to reach $42 billion by 2030, according toAED. That growth will be driven by lower operating costs as well as improved technology and lower costs for batteries.

Verizon Connect found that only 17 percent of respondents to its 2023 Fleet Technology Trends Survey use EVs. The majority of those respondents said EVs were only a small part of their fleet makeup.

“A major barrier to EV adoption for many is a lack of charging infrastructure,” reported Verizon Connect. “Even though[contractors]mayhavefoundEVsdesirable, without charging stations along their routes it simply wasn’t feasible.”

However, the bipartisan infrastructure act has earmarked funds for a national EV charging infrastructure.

“It will take time for this infrastructure to be built out, but now is the time to start planning,” advised Verizon. “It’s important for fleets to take a thoughtful approach to EV adoption. Fleet technology can help.”

GPSfleettrackingsoftwarecanhelpfleetmanagersdeterminewhichvehiclesshouldbereplacedwithEVs.Thetechnology can aid in developing an optimized EV charging strategy and comparing costs between EVs and other vehicles. The technology also can optimize routing as equipment owners and contractors add EVs to their fleets.

SteveClegg, ownerofbusinessdevelopmentfirmWinsby Inc., believes the industry will see a switch to battery or hybrid machines.

“Theamountofpartsdropsbyabout90percent,soifyour operating costs for a skid steer were $20 an hour, that drops to $3 per hour,” he said.

Electric machines will cut the maintenance costs. “It’s a whole new ball game,” said Bartecki of Illini High Reach.

As a result, construction equipment dealerships will add new services as revenue sources. Support and servicing of batteries and providing services including recharging vehicles, tires, wear parts and repair are examples that Clegg cited.

To support the job site, nearly all new construction equipment machinery is now equipped with technology that prevents downtime, notesAED.

The challenge, according to the organization, has been getting equipment owners and contractors on board.

“Themachinesneedtobeabletotalktoeachotherasthey do in other industries,” said Ron Slee, managing director of Learning Without Scars.

This year, asset tracking emerged as the technology to see the highest percentage increase of new users, according to Verizon Connect. The number of respondents to the organization’s trends survey who are using the technology jumped to 29 percent this year.

“And 96 percent of those users found it beneficial,” reported Verizon Connect.

In addition to tracking off-road machinery location, GPS technology can provide valuable preventive maintenance data. It helps fleet managers and equipment owners meet productivity, utilization and security goals.

Surveyrespondentsreportedimprovementsinbothequipment/trailer utilization and driver efficiency and productivity.Betterequipmentsecurityandback-officestaffproductivity were reported as well.

Drivers will use their mobile devices to pay at fueling and charging stations, predicted Tony Lourakas, of Fleet Complete.

“Digital transformation enables fleet managers to track drivervehicleinspectionswithoutpaper,”saidthetelematics provider CEO. “Drivers can use assigned key fobs, RFID cards, barcodes, cameras or other authentication methods to increase productivity.”

“Try It Before You Buy It” Game

Theupwardpathoftheequipmentrentalmarketisexpected to continue, according to the American Rental Association (ARA).

Construction equipment rental revenue was expected to surpass $41.6 billion last year. The notion of equipment-asa-service, which transfers responsibility onto the manufacturer or dealer, is favored by contractors.

Thesecustomerslikethefreedomtofocusonbusiness.“It might involve an entire fleet to be provided for several years,” saidAED.

Therewouldatthesametimebethepotentialtotieinvoicing directly to utilization by the contractor or owner.

“Contractors use the machine to dig a hole. They are only interested in the hole, and they look at the equipment merely as an operating cost,” said Slee.

“One of the most positive aspects is the payment flexibility, since it’s usually linked to machine utilization,” said Ray Gallant, Volvo CE vice president of product management.

It Takes Total Commitment

Contractors will have to monitor other “wild-card” issues affectingequipmentacquisition.Tighteningcredit, thefederal debt-ceiling debate and energy prices could impact businesses.

But many in the construction sector are positive about the asset management side of things.

“This year will be full of new opportunities for fleet managers to drive greater efficiencies, increase fleet safety and reduce operating costs,” said Lourakas. “As businesses face interest-rate increases and the possibility of an economic recession, these benefits can help fleets realize cost savings and ROI benefits.”

In the end, fleet optimization and equipment acquisitions to guarantee that optimization come down to a team effort.

“ItrequiresthattheOEM,dealerandcustomerarealigned so the fleet performs accordingly and delivers the expected results,” said Gallant.  CEG

Fecon Bull Hog Helps Unearth SidewalkAfter 10 Years

You may have heard about a bridge to nowhere, but what about a sidewalk to nowhere?

Thiswasthepredicamentonecommunity north ofTampa, Fla., was facing. After makinga1,500-ft.sidewalkonthebacksideofa pond, the community couldn’t build the accompanying bridges to connect the sidewalk to the rest of the complex.

Over the next 10 years, the sidewalk was overtaken on both sides by the Brazilian Peppertree, vines, crepe myrtles, and other undergrowth.

When the project got enough interest to start the second phase of work, Clear Cut Forestry Mulching owner Tim Hileman got the call.

“We had a drone out looking for the sidewalk and you couldn’t see it,” Hileman said, explainingthedegreeofovergrowthpresent. Collectively working off blueprints and with the engineers, the team believed they knew where the sidewalk was hiding. Now they just needed to find a way to get to it.

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. So Hileman started at one of the community’s access points and cut himself a half mile long trail through the woods to the suspected sidewalk location.

“We never would’ve been able to get in there any other way…Then we saw the beginning of the slab and started following it.”

Around 1,500-ft. later Hileman found the other end.

After freeing the sidewalk, Hileman cleared 10 ft. of room on either side. This allowed the engineers to finally access the sidewalk to assess it before working on the connecting bridges. Two and a half days of workgaveacommunitytheirsidewalkback.

The Brazilian Peppertree is so invasive and common in Florida that Hileman encounters it at nearly every job site. Thankfully for Clear Cut and its clients, this undergrowth is easily tamed by Hileman’s Fecon Bull Hog mulcher.

Durable Mulcher Launches Two Businesses

Some say word of mouth is the most effective marketing. When someone is so moved by their experience with a brand that they must tell someone else about it, it can be a very persuasive sales tactic.Apersonal recommendation was powerful enough to convince Hileman to drop what he was doing and follow a friend into the mulching business. Hileman even purchased his first mulcher head attachment straight from him.

Mike Cram with Heavy Brush Mowing started his business in Brevard County, Fla., with a Fecon Bull Hog mulcher. Fast forward seven years and Hileman realized he could do the same…with the same exact mulcher.

“I always saw Mike’s videos but never paid too much attention to them. Then one day I had a meeting at one of his job sites and I saw the mulcher and was just blown away.”

Hileman was impressed, and had such a good friend in Cram, that he was able to borrow Cram’s whole rig and trailer to do his first ever job in Brevard County. Cram then

taught Hileman how to use the equipment to not only clear the land but also to make it look presentable after the fact. He provided Hileman with industry expertise in addition to equipment.

Hileman was so moved after getting to use the equipment that he decided to purchase the seven-year-old mulcher from his friend.

“As the bearings are good, the head’s balanced, and the pumps are good, regardless of what the attachment looks like, it’ll still run just as good as new.”

After adding a Caterpillar high flow skid steer to his arsenal, Clear Cut was born. Two years into operating and the business has added a Caterpillar 299D3 XE high flow skid steer and another used Fecon Bull Hog mulching attachment to its arsenal.

Both mulchers and Cat high flow skid steers are still working, clearing brush and undergrowth in the south Florida area. Hileman figures his business is split 50/50 between residential lot clearing/property improvement and commercial thinning.

While the act of mulching is an act of removal, Hileman’s work is sometimes addition by subtraction, like when he gave a community their sidewalk (and future plans) back by removing the brush.

XL Specialized Trailers Launches Guardian HDG Trailer

XL Specialized Trailers, a manufacturer of heavy haul and specialized trailers, introduced the XL Guardian 110 HDG trailer, a standardized construction trailer that is readily available at dealer locations.

Each aspect of this low-profile, hydraulic detachable gooseneck lowboywasdesignedwiththeuser in mind, and it’s made to simplify the process of hauling construction equipment.

“While we specialize in the customization of our trailers, the Guardian is an exciting new trailer for us, as it is a stock trailer that is ready to hit the road,” said Tom Hiatt, director of sales at XL. “It’s acompetitivemarket, butourspecifications, warranty and value on the Guardian are at the top. It will be a great fit in any lineup.”

Built to last, users can be confident in the Guardian’s longevity as they haul load after load. The Guardian trailer is 53 ft. long and has a capacity rating of 110,000 lbs. in 12 ft. concentrated.

The low-profile gooseneck design provides weight savings andversatility, allowingscrapersto loadoverthetop.Itfeaturesarelief cutout, giving truck fenders plenty

of clearance, and two removable kingpin settings which add flexibility across various truck setups.

On the neck, a rotating work light illuminatestheareaforaddedsafety and visibility when loading.

The gooseneck uses hydraulics to detach for loading and unloading efficiently — and easily reconnects after. The main bed offers a 22-in. loaded deck height.

Operators can adjust the height of

the deck for diverse loads with a 5position variable ride height in the neck and manual ride height in the rear.

The trailer’s 26-ft.-long, 8-ft.-6in.-wide main deck is constructed with a fully welded I-beam design, using100Kflangesand80Kwebs, as well as upper-flange reinforcement. The rugged, raised apitong deckingisbuilttolast, whileatoolbox located in the front provides a

place to store chains and other materials.

Heavy-duty swing-out outriggers add 12 in. of deck width on each side for flexibility in the size of loads. The outriggers swing to the middle of the deck, making a strong double-outrigger point in the center of the deck, where it is needed most. A heavy-duty front pull-out outrigger eliminates the need to stow and carry loose out-

riggers.

In the rear of the main deck, the recessed cross-members make a bucket well. Combined with the open boom trough design in the wheel area, this design provides a solution for transporting excavators low and safe. With D-rings placed throughout the rear of the deck, securement is easier and more efficient than ever.

This trailer offers great versatility with its range of axle options. TheGuardianisa3-axletrailerthat can be run by itself or with an added flip axle, a spreader bar and flip, a single-axle power booster or a hydraulic flip axle. XL’s new bolt-onrecessedhydraulicflipaxle option houses the hydraulic cylinder, quickly flipping the axle without the need for a forklift. This allows for better loading clearance over the flip axle and easy swapping between flip axles and boosters.

The Guardian is backed with XL’s full 5-year structural, 3-year paint and 1-year parts warranty. These units are now available at dealer locations across the United States.

ARA Forecast Illustrates Positive Outlook for 2023

TheAmerican RentalAssociation (ARA) indicates that United States equipment rental revenue surpassed its pre-pandemic highs in 2022, ending the year as a $56.1 billion industry. The ARA released the updated first quarter forecast at The ARA Show 2023 in Orlando.

In 2023, the United States equipment rental industry’s growth will soften, but still grow. Year-over-year, growth in 2022 was around 13.5 percent and year-over-year growth is expected to be around 5.3 percent in 2023 and 1.9 percent in 2024. Despite a slowdown, positivity is evident among ARA members with large and small operations.

Tom Doyle, ARA vice president of program development, said, “In speaking with rental companies across the United States and Canada, despite some unprecedented headwinds, their businesses are strong. It’s generally a great time to be in rental.”

ARA’s third annual construction equipment survey, released in January, showed fleet growth in all 30 product groups. Rental

companies in NorthAmerica that responded are estimating a 58 percent increase in new equipment purchases. Of those respondents, 79 percent said their orders included mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) and 59 percent said their orders included earthmoving equipment.

Federal policy and investments will continue to affect the rental industry, from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Acts to the tax policy of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to $185 billion available for new projects.

“The outlook for equipment rental continues to be positive. With significant funding for infrastructure coming in 2023, the demand for equipment will continue to grow,” said John McClelland, ARA vice president for government affairs and chief economist.

“In addition, more funding is coming from the Inflation Reduction Act as we begin to build out the electricity infrastructure for both vehicles and equipment.”
