FELLING’S PAN TILT TRAILERS UNDERGO DESIGN MODIFICATIONS

Manitou is launching two new models of rough-terrain forklifts for the rental industry with a focus on durability, ease of use and simplicity of service: the all-new M30-4 and M40-4. Both models feature 4-wheel drive with 24-in. rough-terrain tires with two options for easy operation on all surfaces.

The Felling Trailers’ drop-deck Pan Tilt model has undergone design modifications to increase operator ease of use and safety. Felling’s Engineering team recently reviewed the Pan Tilt’s design looking for ways to improve operator ease of use.

DEVELON Video Highlights Brand’s New Vision for Future Following January’s announcement about the company’s new brand and shared visions for the North America market moving forward, DEVELON (formerly Doosan construction equipment) will provide further details in a new video.

The video went live on Feb. 27, 2023, on DEVELON’s North American YouTube channel.

“The video will communicate the timeline and heritage associated with the former brand, as well as highlight the brand’s new vision and generate awareness for DEVELON,” said Todd Roecker, vice president of growth initiatives in North America.

“We are building momentum for the new brand as we work toward the full public launch.”

The video opens with information on the company’s long history in the construction industry and will transition into an interview with the CEO of Hyundai Doosan Infracore, Young-cheul Cho. Cho will speak on the reasoning behind the new brand name and introduce the vision and purpose of the brand.

“When coming up with a new name, we had many ideas that could represent our

brand’s direction and value,” said Cho. “That is why we came up with the combination of the two words ‘Develop’ and ‘Onwards.’ We believe these words show the brand’s purpose to advance the development of our world with new products and solutions”.

The CEO of Hyundai Doosan Infracore, Seung Hyun Oh, also will be featured in the video and aims to assure DEVELON customers of the company’s continuous commitment to satisfaction and innovative solutions.

“I have witnessed all the changes our company has gone through,” said Oh. “From Daewoo to Doosan, and now DEVELON, even though the brand name changes, I can proudly say that our core value, to satisfy the needs of customers through endless product and technological innovation, hasn’t changed.”

World Ag Expo Sets 10-Year High in Attendance Numbers

T

he 2023 World Ag Expo was held in Tulare, Calif., on Feb. 14 to 16, 2023. This annual show marked 56 years — with the theme, “Taking Care of Ag Business.”

This year’s event saw a 10-year high in attendance with more than 100,000 attendees during its three-day run.

More than 1,200 exhibitors displayed the latest in farm equipment, allowing exhibitors the chance to speak with farmers, ag professionals and students from across the country.

More than 100 educational sessions were held, from renewable energy and groundwater management to dairy and livestock innovations.

The show opened on Tues., Feb. 14, with opening remarks from U.S. Speaker Kevin McCarthy, followed by the firing of the cannon and a flyover of an F18 and F35 down Meridian Street.

McCarthy spoke about the importance of farming — “we feed the world” — and the importance of “helping today’s farmers continue to grow.”

After opening ceremonies, the show hosted the first U.S. House Committee Agriculture 2023 Bill Listening session, where the bipartisan committee members in attendance heard the concerns facing farmers today.

House committee members included Chairman Glenn Thompson (PA-15), Jim Costa (CA-21), John Duarte (CA-13), John Rose (TN-6), along with six additional committee members, who spoke to the group about the future and concerns in farming. Food safety and water continue to be of high importance to those in attendance.

Most exhibitors were enthusiastic about the expo, where attendees were able to visit with dealers and manufacturers from all facets of the agricultural industry, from autonomous solutions to harvesting to dairy advancements.

Companies Launch Innovative Products, Make Major New

fter five days of a plethora of innovative product launches and major company announcements, enlightening education sessions and seemingly infinite networking opportunities, ConExpo-Con/AGG & IFPE 2023 came to a close Friday, March 18, 2023, but not before taking the construction industry to the next level.

According to AEM, the show crushed expected attendance numbers, drawing more than 139,000 construction and fluid power professionals from 133 countries to Las Vegas from March 14-18, 2023, making it the largest trade show in North America with more than 2,400 exhibitors from 36 countries spread out over 3 million sq. ft. of exhibit space.

“The innovations in the construction industry unveiled this week will play a role in helping construction professionals drive meaningful and sustainable economic growth,” said Phil Kelliher, Caterpillar senior vice president and ConExpoCon/AGG show chair. “Live events in the construction industry are very important, because you can see, touch and experience the products. That value was reaffirmed this past week across the show floor.”

This year’s show emphasized how the construction industry is evolving in many ways to adapt to sustainable technologies, products and practices. Show attendees were treated to sustainability in action, from electric- and hydrogen-powered construction equipment, to more recyclable materials and waste reduction opportunities.

One of the biggest sustainability efforts on the part of ConExpo-Con/AGG directly is a partnership between the John Deere and Wirtgen Group’s latest equipment was display at the show. show and the Arbor Day Foundation. ConExpo and the Arbor Day Foundation will be planting more than 139,000 trees, one for every show registrant in a forest of greatest need.

Additionally, ConExpo exhibitors, attendees and fans of the show can contribute to the Arbor Day Foundation’s funds, allowing it to further its goal of involving itself in its mission of planting, nurturing and celebrating trees around the globe.

The show also featured a wide range of educational opportunities, including 190 expert-led sessions on topics such as construction safety, equipment technology and sustainable building practices.

Announcements at ConExpo 2023 Trade Show in Las Vegas

After the difficulties faced since the previous time the industry gathered for the show in 2020, attendees and exhibitors expressed excitement to see the return to normalcy. One of those individuals is 89-yearold Leonard McCurley. McCurley has attended the show for the past six decades and is a true ConExpo veteran.

Raised on a farm in Michigan and working in construction his whole life, McCurley has found the show to be a home away from home throughout his adult life. He attended his first show in 1963 and has made it back to each and every one in the 60 years that have followed.

“There are so many interesting people I’ve talked to; it’s an education just to talk to all of them,” said McCurley. “I think everybody that is around heavy equipment should go to that show.”

ConExpo is a family reunion of sorts for McCurley. Several of the companies he has worked for in the past have booths at the show, and he looked forward to reconnecting with their representatives whenever and wherever he possibly could during the week.

In addition, his own children and grandchildren were in Las Vegas attending the show. However, McCurley recalled his fondest memories of attending ConExpo were with his wife in years past.

“She went to every show with me when she was alive, and she really enjoyed them, too,” he said.

Now that he has made it to this year’s ConExpo, McCurley said he has nothing but love for North America’s largest construction trade show and would like to attend the show moving forward for as long as it makes sense for him to do so. see CONEXPO page 16

By sharing equipment health and performance data over common infrastructure, and collaborating on health analytics, both companies can access the same secure data and develop joint analytics and insights. Data is collected on a single device and all actions are managed in a shared case management system, allowing experts from both teams to work remotely with a customer’s maintenance staff.

DEVELON, formerly known as Doosan Infracore, has introduced its next-generation tool carrier models — the DL200TC-7 and DL250TC-7 — in the United States and Canada. These new models round out the -7 Series wheel loader introductions for the company.

Like their -5 Series predecessors, the DL200TC-7 and DL250TC-7 tool carriers have a parallel-lift linkage system that gives operators precise control over a variety of attachments in applications other than loading, such as lift- and place-type applications. The tool carrier’s lift arm design keeps the attachment level, allowing for faster lifting and placing of materials.

“We’ve incorporated performance and design elements, like enhanced visibility, into our -7 Series tool carriers to help operators on jobsites,” said Bill Zak, wheel loader product manager. “Our tool carrier models can improve an operator’s ability to load, unload and move materials, reducing the need for additional equipment and enhancing productivity.”

Key features of the hydrostatic drive include: • Dynamic Braking: When operators remove their foot from the travel control pedal, the system will automatically reduce the flow of oil, causing the machine to slow. This means less wear on the brakes and reduced energy consumption.

• Speed Management: Operators can adjust their maximum travel speed independently from engine speed.

Operators also can use the convenient creep function to easily fine-tune their loader’s position without pressing the accelerator pedal.

For more control when doing precision work, the variable speed control offers seven preset speeds within first gear.

The new models also feature wider radiator fin spacing and a standard reversible fan that clears dust, dirt and other large debris to help prevent clogging.

The wheel loader’s durable box frame and articulating design deliver enhanced rigidity and load distribution. A deeper front fender provides additional wheel coverage that helps protect the windshield, and the optional rear full fender improves stability.

High-Lift Configuration A high-lift configuration is available for the two tool carriers, providing additional dump height for processing plants, scrap and recycling facilities and agricultural operations. Added dump height is particularly useful for tool carrier operators who regularly load trucks and need additional lift height to efficiently dump material into the truck. The optional high-lift configuration provides an additional 18 in. of dump height.

Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship Applications Available The American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation (ARTBA-TDF) is seeking eligible students for its 2023-24 “Lanford Family Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship Program.”

Established in 1999, this first-of-its-kind scholarship fund

provides post-high school financial assistance to the children of highway workers killed or permanently disabled on the job. More than 200 scholarships have been awarded to worthy students from 33 states to pursue post-high school education.

“Slower economic growth underlies the trends this year,” said Ralph Petta, ELFA president. “Equipment acquisition continues to drive supply chains across all U.S. manufacturing and service sectors.”

Though the association forecasts “sluggish growth” this year, it views as “a solid jumping-off point for 2023” the 12percent annualized growth in capital spending last year.

“Rising interest rates, high inflation and other economic uncertainties are expected to weigh on investment,” ELFA reported.

The association predicts 4.2 percent growth in equipment and software investment this year. Tighter financial conditions are foreseen as well. “Interest-rate levels are expected to rise above 5 percent this year.”

That number has the potential to go higher as the federal government fights inflation.

“Even if rate increases slow down or pause later in the year, the Fed’s shrinking balance sheet will contribute to tighter financial conditions,” said ELFA. Paying for Those Purchases At 55 percent, the majority of equipment acquired will be financed, the association maintains.

“Protection from equipment obsolescence, tax advantages and cash-flow optimization will be the top drivers for end users to finance.”

As a result, contractors will turn to automation and technology to offset labor costs this year.

“Additional benefits will be increased economic productivity and downward pressure on inflation in the long term,” said ELFA. Supply-chain backlogs will ease up, opening doors for equipment acquisitions. Because those backlogs have returned to their historical averages, said ELFA, delivery delays or shortages will improve.

“A combination of cooling demand and improving public health have given suppliers a chance to catch up,” the association said. “In addition, global supply-chain disruptions have triggered a paradigm shift.”

Many large organizations are “near-shorting” or “reshoring” elements of their supply chains, in fact. The slowgrowth economy will have many categories of equipment thriving, said ELFA, as residual pandemic effects will spur demand.

Post-pandemic hybrid work arrangements will dictate the acquisition of office equipment, computers, software and communications technology. And the trending commitment by companies to cut greenhouse gases will grow demand for green projects. That means construction of wind turbines, solar energy systems, microgrids and battery storage facilities will grow.

The five-year distribution program for the legislation passed by Congress will boost demand for off-road equipment. Globally, an estimated $18 trillion of climate-focused equipment is forecast to be financed between now and 2030, according to ELFA. “If you are thinking about developing or enhancing your fleet sustainability management strategy, this is the year,” said Tony Lourakis, of Fleet Complete.

“Working toward a greener fleet is something your competitors are most likely already looking into or have adopted,” added the telematics company CEO.

Technology Is King The Association of Equipment Distributors (AED) has formed a trends list of its own. Construction fleets this year will be most affected by technology.

Online sales and rentals, vehicle electrification, connected job sites, parts and equipment rental in particular will be front and center.

“Whatever happens in the auto industry is coming to construction equipment dealerships,” said Garry Bartecki, Illini High Reach CFO, commenting on the growing trend in online sales of automobiles, which reached 30 percent of the market two years ago.

Back then, dealers said in a survey they believed it was likely that OEMS will implement a direct-to-consumer model in five years.

“They expect fully digital sales — including the actual purchase — for new equipment to increase from 7 percent to 29 percent,” noted the AED survey.

Digital rentals were expected to increase from 7 percent to 33 percent within that same timeframe.

“We definitely see things moving in this direction,” said Jefferson Yin, director of new business models of Volvo Construction Equipment.

The global off-highway electric vehicle (EV) market size is expected to reach $42 billion by 2030, according to AED. That growth will be driven by lower operating costs as well as improved technology and lower costs for batteries.

Verizon Connect found that only 17 percent of respondents to its 2023 Fleet Technology Trends Survey use EVs. The majority of those respondents said EVs were only a small part of their fleet makeup.

“A major barrier to EV adoption for many is a lack of charging infrastructure,” reported Verizon Connect. “Even though [contractors] may have found EVs desirable, without charging stations along their routes it simply wasn’t feasible.”

However, the bipartisan infrastructure act has earmarked funds for a national EV charging infrastructure.

“It will take time for this infrastructure to be built out, but now is the time to start planning,” advised Verizon. “It’s important for fleets to take a thoughtful approach to EV adoption. Fleet technology can help.”

GPS fleet tracking software can help fleet managers determine which vehicles should be replaced with EVs. The technology can aid in developing an optimized EV charging strategy and comparing costs between EVs and other vehicles. The technology also can optimize routing as equipment owners and contractors add EVs to their fleets.

Steve Clegg, owner of business development firm Winsby Inc., believes the industry will see a switch to battery or hybrid machines.

“The amount of parts drops by about 90 percent, so if your operating costs for a skid steer were $20 an hour, that drops to $3 per hour,” he said.

Electric machines will cut the maintenance costs. “It’s a whole new ball game,” said Bartecki of Illini High Reach.

As a result, construction equipment dealerships will add new services as revenue sources. Support and servicing of batteries and providing services including recharging vehicles, tires, wear parts and repair are examples that Clegg cited.

To support the job site, nearly all new construction equipment machinery is now equipped with technology that prevents downtime, notes AED. The challenge, according to the organization, has been getting equipment owners and contractors on board.

“The machines need to be able to talk to each other as they do in other industries,” said Ron Slee, managing director of Learning Without Scars.

This year, asset tracking emerged as the technology to see the highest percentage increase of new users, according to Verizon Connect. The number of respondents to the organization’s trends survey who are using the technology jumped to 29 percent this year.

“And 96 percent of those users found it beneficial,” reported Verizon Connect.

In addition to tracking off-road machinery location, GPS technology can provide valuable preventive maintenance data. It helps fleet managers and equipment owners meet productivity, utilization and security goals.

Survey respondents reported improvements in both equipment/trailer utilization and driver efficiency and productivity. Better equipment security and back-office staff productivity were reported as well.

Drivers will use their mobile devices to pay at fueling and charging stations, predicted Tony Lourakas, of Fleet Complete.

“Digital transformation enables fleet managers to track driver vehicle inspections without paper,” said the telematics provider CEO. “Drivers can use assigned key fobs, RFID cards, barcodes, cameras or other authentication methods to increase productivity.”

“Try It Before You Buy It” Game The upward path of the equipment rental market is expected to continue, according to the American Rental Association (ARA).

Construction equipment rental revenue was expected to surpass $41.6 billion last year. The notion of equipment-asa-service, which transfers responsibility onto the manufacturer or dealer, is favored by contractors.

These customers like the freedom to focus on business. “It might involve an entire fleet to be provided for several years,” said AED. There would at the same time be the potential to tie invoicing directly to utilization by the contractor or owner.

“Contractors use the machine to dig a hole. They are only interested in the hole, and they look at the equipment merely as an operating cost,” said Slee.

“One of the most positive aspects is the payment flexibility, since it’s usually linked to machine utilization,” said Ray Gallant, Volvo CE vice president of product management.

It Takes Total Commitment Contractors will have to monitor other “wild-card” issues affecting equipment acquisition. Tightening credit, the federal debt-ceiling debate and energy prices could impact businesses.

But many in the construction sector are positive about the asset management side of things.

“This year will be full of new opportunities for fleet managers to drive greater efficiencies, increase fleet safety and reduce operating costs,” said Lourakas. “As businesses face interest-rate increases and the possibility of an economic recession, these benefits can help fleets realize cost savings and ROI benefits.”

In the end, fleet optimization and equipment acquisitions to guarantee that optimization come down to a team effort.

“It requires that the OEM, dealer and customer are aligned so the fleet performs accordingly and delivers the expected results,” said Gallant.  CEG

Fecon Bull Hog Helps Unearth Sidewalk After 10 Years

The housing community of Connection, Fla., planned to connect the community's pond to the community through boardwalks. Unfortunately, after cutting the path and putting the sidewalk in, the rest of the project was put on hold.

You may have heard about a bridge to nowhere, but what about a sidewalk to nowhere?

This was the predicament one community north of Tampa, Fla., was facing. After making a 1,500-ft. sidewalk on the back side of a pond, the community couldn’t build the accompanying bridges to connect the sidewalk to the rest of the complex.

Battling Brazilian Peppertree The housing community of Connerton, Fla., north of Tampa had grand plans for putting in a sidewalk around the back side of the community’s pond and then connecting it to the community through boardwalks at each end. Unfortunately, after cutting the path and putting the sidewalk in, the rest of the project was put on hold. Over the next 10 years, the sidewalk was overtaken on both sides by the Brazilian Peppertree, vines, crepe myrtles, and other undergrowth.

When the project got enough interest to start the second phase of work, Clear Cut Forestry Mulching owner Tim Hileman got the call.

“We had a drone out looking for the sidewalk and you couldn’t see it,” Hileman said, explaining the degree of overgrowth present.

Collectively working off blueprints and with the engineers, the team believed they knew where the sidewalk was hiding. Now they just needed to find a way to get to it.

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. So Hileman started at one of the community’s access points and cut himself a half mile long trail through the woods to the suspected sidewalk location.

“We never would’ve been able to get in there any other way…Then we saw the beginning of the slab and started following it.”

Around 1,500-ft. later Hileman found the other end.

After freeing the sidewalk, Hileman cleared 10 ft. of room on either side. This allowed the engineers to finally access the sidewalk to assess it before working on the connecting bridges. Two and a half days of work gave a community their sidewalk back.

The Brazilian Peppertree is so invasive and common in Florida that Hileman encounters it at nearly every job site.

Thankfully for Clear Cut and its clients, this undergrowth is easily tamed by Hileman’s Fecon Bull Hog mulcher.

Astec Industries Launches GT2612V Screening Plant Astec Industries’ Materials Solutions Group has launched its newest mobile high frequency screening plant, the GT2612V. The plant features a 2612V Vari-Vibe high frequency screen. The two-deck, 6 by 12 ft. (1.8 by 3.7 m) screen uses a unique rotary tensioning system that allows for some of the quickest screen media changes on the market, giving producers more uptime, according to the manufacturer.

The 2612V also has deck-mounted, variable speed hydraulic vibrators, a hydraulic mechanism for varying operating angles, a fines collecting hopper, top and bottom deck discharge chutes and an aggregate spreader. The high frequency screen can quickly and efficiently size crushed stone, recycled asphalt pavement, sand, gravel, coal and a variety of other materials.

Durable Mulcher Launches Two Businesses Some say word of mouth is the most effective marketing. When someone is so moved by their experience with a brand that they must tell someone else about it, it can be a very persuasive sales tactic. A personal recommendation was powerful enough to convince Hileman to drop what he was doing and follow a friend into the mulching business. Hileman even purchased his first mulcher head attachment straight from him.

Mike Cram with Heavy Brush Mowing started his business in Brevard County, Fla., with a Fecon Bull Hog mulcher. Fast forward seven years and Hileman realized he could do the same…with the same exact mulcher.

“I always saw Mike’s videos but never paid too much attention to them. Then one day I had a meeting at one of his job sites and I saw the mulcher and was just blown away.”

Hileman was impressed, and had such a good friend in Cram, that he was able to borrow Cram’s whole rig and trailer to do his first ever job in Brevard County. Cram then

taught Hileman how to use the equipment to not only clear the land but also to make it look presentable after the fact. He provided Hileman with industry expertise in addition to equipment.

Hileman was so moved after getting to use the equipment that he decided to purchase the seven-year-old mulcher from his friend.

“As the bearings are good, the head’s balanced, and the pumps are good, regardless of what the attachment looks like, it’ll still run just as good as new.”

After adding a Caterpillar high flow skid steer to his arsenal, Clear Cut was born. Two years into operating and the business has added a Caterpillar 299D3 XE high flow skid steer and another used Fecon Bull Hog mulching attachment to its arsenal.

Both mulchers and Cat high flow skid steers are still working, clearing brush and undergrowth in the south Florida area.

Hileman figures his business is split 50/50 between residential lot clearing/property improvement and commercial thinning.

While the act of mulching is an act of removal, Hileman’s work is sometimes addition by subtraction, like when he gave a community their sidewalk (and future plans) back by removing the brush.

Felling’s Pan Tilt Trailers Undergo Design Modifications The Felling Trailers’ drop-deck Pan Tilt model has undergone design modifications to increase operator ease of use and safety.

The Pan Tilt is a gravity tilt trailer, using gravity and a center pivot point for tilting the trailer bed. Felling’s Engineering team recently reviewed the Pan Tilt’s design looking for ways to improve operator ease of use along with production efficiencies. Modifications have been made to the Pan Tilt’s locking mechanism, lighting, license plate mount position and location.

The tilt locking mechanism is the most notable of the modifications improving the production process, flexibility to function with optional features, and most importantly, operator ease of use. The previous locking mechanism was a purchased part that required modification and multiple latches dependent upon a trailer build’s selected features, power up/down, or a toolbox, as it was mounted on the front of the trailer.

“The goal was not to have a longer hitch length if they [the end-user] optioned cylinders [power up/down] or an extra latch for a toolbox, making the base design more modular, streamlining the manufacturing process,” said Felling Trailers’ Engineering Team Lead, Cathy Voge.

The new locking mechanism is located on the front roadside of the trailer, operating as a lever that releases a lock bar located under the front deck frame. All the components for this locking system are sourced internally, improving fit and function.

nents needed, replacing the front marker lights and mounting plate with bullet lights that mount into the hitch channel. The bullet light mounted into the hitch channel also provides better wiring protection.

The license plate mount on the pan tilts is utilized across

other Felling tilt deck lines. This style mount prominently displays the license plate without obstruction from the taillights or cargo being transported, promoting operator and towing safety.

AED Board Names RMS President Russell Sheaffer as Director at Large Road Machinery & Supplies Co. President, Russell Sheaffer was named Director at Large of the Associated Equipment Directors (AED) board. The American Rental Association (ARA) indicates that United States equipment rental revenue surpassed its pre-pandemic highs in 2022, ending the year as a $56.1 billion industry. The ARA released the updated first quarter forecast at The ARA Show 2023 in Orlando.

In 2023, the United States equipment rental industry’s growth will soften, but still grow. Year-over-year, growth in 2022 was around 13.5 percent and year-over-year growth is expected to be around 5.3 percent in 2023 and 1.9 percent in 2024. Despite a slowdown, positivity is evident among ARA members with large and small operations.

Tom Doyle, ARA vice president of program development, said, “In speaking with rental companies across the United States and Canada, despite some unprecedented headwinds, their businesses are strong. It’s generally a great time to be in rental.”

ARA’s third annual construction equipment survey, released in January, showed fleet growth in all 30 product groups. Rental

companies in North America that responded are estimating a 58 percent increase in new equipment purchases. Of those respondents, 79 percent said their orders included mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) and 59 percent said their orders included earthmoving equipment.

Federal policy and investments will continue to affect the rental industry, from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Acts to the tax policy of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to $185 billion available for new projects.

“The outlook for equipment rental continues to be positive. With significant funding for infrastructure coming in 2023, the demand for equipment will continue to grow,” said John McClelland, ARA vice president for government affairs and chief economist.

“In addition, more funding is coming from the Inflation Reduction Act as we begin to build out the electricity infrastructure for both vehicles and equipment.”
