Juan ABUELA
Juan Abuela’s Pressure series is a masterclass in precision. Despite the seemingly disparate and commanding materials—including concrete, wood, and spray paint—Abuela’s clever hand thoughtfully applies each element such that the resulting sculpture asserts itself in space, declaring that is how it was always meant to exist. Never overwrought, never underdone, always in harmony. Although many of the works in Pressure are oversized, they maintain a sense of levity as if unconstrained by the tethers of gravity. Abuela’s Pressure 16 is a shining example of the series’ successes. charge, but with Abuela’s savvy, they are seemingly weightless and natural.
Abuela’s early and constant interaction with different artistic manifestations in Cuba, including his family’s generations-long dedication to carpentry, provided him with an unconventional art education.
The prismatic paint colors also allude to this organic nature. Each color melts seamlessly from one into the next, suggesting the curvilinear wooden bands are instead translucent liquids actively refracting a warm passing light as they ebb and flow around the concrete core.
La serie Presión de Juan Abuela es una clase magistral de exactitud. A pesar del uso de materiales imponentes y aparentemente dispares, como el concreto, la madera y la pintura en aerosol, la mano inteligente de Abuela cuida cada elemento para que la escultura resultante se afirme en el espacio exponiendo la idoneidad de su existencia. Nunca sobrecargada, nunca irresoluta, siempre en armonía.
