LA ROSA Luis

While his ability to tackle complex issues through his distinctly geometric sensibility has long marked his career, Luis La Rosa’s recent installations are a particularly exceptional series that fully displays his thoughtfulness and precision. Gravitational Wave Sensor makes for a stellar exemplar of La Rosa’s distinct approach to material and interpretation. Conical-tiered plant supports and convex plastic discs combine to form an otherworldly curvilinear pyramid that engages with the space around it. The bowing shape of each transparent disc allows the installation to stretch beyond its physical bounds through an array of dynamic refractions and shadows. Like the mightiest masses of the cosmos, Gravitational Wave Sensor lassos the bodies around it, drawing them inward. Similarly, whether in moving through the installation space or by our own minuscule bends in spacetime, viewers cannot help but engage with the work and consider their corporeal form as it relates to the ascending pyramid. Beyond being formally striking, Gravitational Wave Sensor and La Rosa’s entire oeuvre of installations are a triumph in their ability to put visual language to the entanglements of the universe.

Si bien la capacidad de Luis La Rosa para abordar temas complejos a través de su sensibilidad claramente geométrica ha marcado su carrera durante mucho tiempo, sus instalaciones recientes conforman una serie excepcional que muestra plenamente el pensamiento y la precisión del artista. Gravitational Wave Sensor es un ejemplo sobresaliente del enfoque de La Rosa hacia los materiales y la construcción de sentido. Aquí se combinan soportes cónicos para plantas y discos convexos de plástico para formar una pirámide curvilínea de visos extraplanetarios que se acopla al espacio que la rodea. Los arcos de los discos transparentes permiten que la instalación desborde sus límites físicos a través de una dinámica serie de sombras y refracciones. Al igual que las poderosas masas del cosmos, Gravitational Wave Sensor enlaza los cuerpos que la rodean atrayéndolos hacia sí. De manera similar, ya sea al moverse en torno a la instalación o por las minúsculas curvas que se crean en el espacio-tiempo, el espectador no pueden evitar involucrarse con esta pieza y considerar su propia corporeidad en relación con la pirámide ascendente. Más allá de ser formalmente impactante, Gravitational Wave Sensor y toda la obra instalativa de La Rosa logran hábilmente otorgar una gramática visual a las complejidades del universo.
