MONTILLA Rafael

On its face, Rafael Montilla’s practice may appear eccentric but peer closer, and it’s clear his sophisticated approach presents an edge on which impactful paradoxes and blurred boundaries delicately balance. Using his distinctive white cubes, Montilla artfully bridges the gaps between space, time, and dimensions, past, present, and future, and between the private and public. For his Kubes Land series, the artist arranges an assembly of cubes, sometimes produced three-dimensionally, within a landscape, each slightly larger or smaller than the prior. This progression, along with the subtle imperfections in each cube’s symmetry, alludes to motion as if the arrangement is a collection of snapshots of one cube tumbling through time and space. The Kubes in Action series has a similar sense of movement—Montilla’s cubes dance through space and time and become one with their urban environment, collapsing the distinctions between dimensions. In his performative work Kube Man, the artist realizes these same aims while engaging with other bodies; the divisions between oneself, others, and space become indistinct. Reaching beyond the gallery walls, Montilla’s work always captivates the places and people around him.

La práctica de Rafael Montilla puede parecer excéntrica a primera vista, pero mirada en detalle, muestra un sofisticado enfoque donde se equilibran delicadamente impactantes paradojas y límites borrosos. Usando sus distintivos cubos blancos, Montilla une con ingenio las brechas entre espacio, tiempo y dimensión, pasado, presente y futuro, y entre lo público y lo privado. En la serie Kubos Land, el artista dispone en el paisaje un conjunto de cubos a veces producidos en tres dimensiones— que se van agrandando o empequeñeciendo en sucesión. Esta progresión, junto a las sutiles imperfecciones en la simetría, alude al movimiento, haciendo que la composición sea como una colección de instantáneas de un cubo dando tumbos a través del tiempo y el espacio. La serie Kubos en acción da una sensación similar de dinamismo: los cubos de Montilla bailan a través del espacio y el tiempo, y se vuelven uno con el entorno urbano, colapsando las distinciones dimensionales. En su obra performática Hombre kubo, el artista logra estos mismos objetivos al interactuar con otros cuerpos; la separación entre uno, los otros y el espacio se hace indistinta. Más allá de las paredes de la galería, el trabajo de Montilla cautiva siempre al entorno y a las personas que lo rodean.
