RINCÓN-CAÑAS Ileana

Photography forms the foundation of Ileana Rincón-Cañas’ work, primarily self-portrait and landscape. However, the finished works reflect more of a painterly process that happens all in post-production, where she builds pieces up layer by layer, sometimes even incorporating images of actual paint to add visual texture. While drawing inspiration from the tradition of surrealism, Rincón-Cañas is less interested in exploring dream states or the subconscious, as reflected in her well-thought-out approach to making work. Her pieces stem from an active imagination; she creates sketches accompanied by writing to visualize a piece and sets out to take the photographs needed. The collected images then get pulled apart and put back together into digital composites, reflecting her more than twenty years of animation and motion graphics work. Her resulting works have a weightless ethereal quality, though they often deal with heavy subject matter, embracing explorations of self-esteem, pollution, migration, and gender equality. The work retains a dreamlike quality; Rincón-Cañas pieces encourage viewers to contemplate mysterious connections between seemingly disparate objects and situations.

La fotografía, principalmente el autorretrato y el paisaje, es el fundamento del trabajo de Ileana Rincón-Cañas. Sin embargo, sus obras son el resultado de un proceso pictórico que ocurre en la posproducción, donde la artista construye sus piezas capa por capa, incorporando, incluso, imágenes de trazos reales para agregar texturas visuales. Si bien Rincón-Cañas se inspira en la tradición del surrealismo, está menos interesada en explorar los estados oníricos o el subconsciente, lo que se refleja en su meditado enfoque de ejecución creativa. Sus obras nacen de una imaginación activa; crea bocetos con anotaciones para visualizar la pieza y se dispone a tomar las fotografías necesarias. Luego, la artista separa las imágenes recopiladas y las vuelve a unir en composiciones digitales, haciendo evidente la destreza adquirida en sus más de veinte años de trabajo en animación y motion graphics. Las imágenes resultantes tienen una calidad etérea e ingrávida, aunque a menudo traten temas densos como las exploraciones en la autoestima, la contaminación, las migraciones y la igualdad de género. Esa persistente cualidad onírica de las imágenes de Rincón-Cañas invita al espectador a considerar misteriosas conexiones entre objetos y situaciones aparentemente dispares.
