Hardwood from where?

Kota Kinabalu is not exactly a household name. But, like many presently obscure places in the Far East, its name is expected to become very familiar to those who deal in hardwoodwhether as manufacturer, wholesaler or retailer.

Kota Kinabalu is in East Malaysia, which, along with Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, is making dramatic strides in the hardwood business. Experts say that in the next five years, we should look for new hardwood species in the marketplace along with a markedly higher percentage of imported hardwood. More finished products and parts are also to be expected.

The reason is the explosive economic growth of the Pacific Rim countries, especially those 2 nations from South Korea to New Zealand. Their phenomenal development of the last few years is supported by a large population, oil, rubber, timber and other resources, and a work ethic in the people that American businessmen marvel at.

Propelling the changes are factors such as transportation costs and natural resources. Already it is cheaper by half for Westerners to get

their normal hardwood species from the Far East than traditional Midwest and Southern sources. In Indonesia, for example, hundreds of millions of acres of untapped timber reserves, many of them homogenous stands of hardwood, are waiting to be cut into long lengths and widths, specifications that are increasingly difficult to fill domestically.

Asian wood quality and workmanship in parts and products are more than adequate. Grading rules are generally being kept, though this is, lamentably, far from universal. Indonesian hardwood grading is considered to be excellent. Others are of equal quality. The Malaysian Timber Board, for instance, has a regular program of spot checking exports for grade and quality.

The Pacific Rim countries are also a growing destination for U.S. hardwood exports. Brokers speak fondly about inquiries from Japan for 500 containers of oak. More American oak is now exported to the Pacific Rim than Europe.

Although the hardwood business has long been marked by comfortable, traditional patterns, it appears that may be on the verge of changing.

Kitchens are new trend in hardwood flooring sales

With hardwood floors in vogue for new home kitchens, you can be sure that Ms. D-I-Y and the remodeling contractors will be using them, too.

"New synthetic, water resistant finishes have made it practical to use wood floors in kitchens," says George Kelly, National Oak Flooring Manufacturers Association director.

Hardwood floors for all rooms and areas are becoming more popular. Over 103.4 million feet have sold during the past 12 months. The association reports that hardwood flooring manufacturers shipped 54.2 million board feet of prefinished and unfinished flooring during the first six months of 1984, a 990 increase over the previous period.

After nearly 20 years of declining sales, hardwood is once more popular. Strip flooring is still the standard in most homes, although designer floors, primarily plank and parquet, have become popular in medium to upper income homes, according to Kelly. "Hardwood flooring is an investment which will last a lifetime and adds significantly to the resale value," he said.

made surface has always been considered more practical?

First, he can make certain that he has one or more trained hardwood specialists on his sales staff. This person should be familiar with the different wood patterns, parquets and planks. There are many choices. One manufacturer, for example, lists over 70 different types. There's a wood floor to suit any taste and situation, but the consumer is often confused about solid or laminated products, smooth or textured surfaces and the variety of color available in oak, walnut or teak. The expert will be able to recommend the right wood and assure the purchaser of its suitability.

The hardwood expert also is the guide in interpreting specifications, selecting application materials and tools along with the prefinished or unfinished moulding, trim and stain necessary for completing the job. A final duty of the hardwood expert is to outline the easy upkeep tactics needed to guarantee the wood looking good for many years.

As a dealer, you probably wonder where you will find this hardwood wizard. It does not just happen. This miraculous salesperson is carefully trained, usually in part by attending classes offered by hardwood distributors. If there are no classes available, he can educate himself using materials provided by the flooring association and the manufacturers. Experts working with the distributor also can answer many questions for him.

To give the salesperson as well as his sales a boost, a dealer must maintain current hardwood displays. Ideally, they should be in highly visible areas and reflect the latest trends in wood patterns and textures. At present, a kitchen vignette with a hardwood floor would be ideal. Experts recommend a 12 sq. ft. area for showing a pattern, but less will do. Some dealers beat the space problem by displayrng samples on the walls of the

Falike can count on the integrity of hardwood plywood because of the work of the Hardwood Plywood Manufacturers Association.

As guardians of the industry, they make sure that every panel, square of flooring, panel door and kitchen cabinet utilizing hardwood plywood that you stock in your store meets high standards.

To assure quality and performance, they maintain the most complete testing laboratory for hardwood plywood in the United States at their Reston, Va., headquarters.

Testing programs undertaken there are recognized by HUD, BOCA, ICBO, SBCC, NVLAP and other government and industry agencies. The lab contains equipment for conducting fire and smoke tests as well as structural properties tests.

In addition, the chemistry lab is able to test for formaldehyde emission, moisture content, linear variation, specific gravity, finish and glue bond in addition to conducting a number of other tests designed to insure the reliability and safety of the product. Inspectors located in Oregon, California, South Carolina and Virginia keep a close watch on the product in the field.

Using these resources, HPMA develops and publishes standards for the industry as well as reviewing federal and military specifications and foreign standards affecting hardwood plywood and laminated hardwood flooring. They are responsible for the existing standards for the structural design of hardwood plywood, laminated hardwood flooring and hardwood and decorative plywood. The

laboratory is accredited by NVLAP of the U.S. Department of Commerce as having the competence to perform specified tests in accordance with prescribed test methods and accreditation criteria.

Laboratory testing is not limited to hardwood plywood. The facilities are used by many different building products manufacturers for ftre, smoke,

structural and chemical testing. Testing services are available to both members and non-members.

Association membership is subdivided into product divisions to more readily work with the various types of hardwood plywood products. The five divisions are laminated flooring, cut-to-size, prefinish, stock panel and veneer and affiliate. This type of grouping enables members with similar concerns to meet in small sections.

members of the prefinish division. Door skins, curved plywood and furniture parts are manufactured by those in the cut-to-size division. The veneer and affiliate division includes all those who provide materials used in the manufacture of hardwood plywood.

This category is necessary because although hardwood plywood is primarily a natural wood product, it requires adhesives, veneer, core stock, finishes and special machinery to become a finished product. In simple terms, hardwood plywood is an assembly of an odd number of layers of wood joined together by an adhesive. In most cases, the grain direction of each layer or ply is at right angles to the grain of the adjacent ply or plies. Hardwood plywood differs from softwood plywood in that the facd ply, which is ornamental, uses wood species such as oak, walnut, lauan, elm, cherry, pecan, maple, birch, gum, teak and rosewood.

Since a great deal of hardwood plywood is utilized in the furniture industry, the association is active in overseeing the needs of the furniture and cabinet manufacturers with the cutto-size division.

HPMA is a mingling of several regional associations including the Plywood Manufacturing Association founded in l92l and the Plywood Manufacturing Institute originating in 1938. The Hardwood Plywood Institute and the Southern Plywood Manufacturers Association joined in 1953 with the name being changed to Hardwood Plywood Manufactwers Association in 1964.

Benjamin Rose and James Trussell are field staff members.

In addition to arranging committee meetings, semi-annual conventions and regional meetings for members to exchange information and solve common problems, the association represents the industry in all legislative issues affecting it. An active liaison with the regulatory agencies in federal, state and local governments also is maintained.

To help every segment of the industry, the association publishes management aids and sales aids in the form of bulletins, reports, surveys and technical papers. It also actively promotes the sale and use of hardwood plywood with films and slide presentations, literature, plans for do-it-yourself projects and articles in both trade and consumer magazines. Almost 50 pieces of literature are available through HPMA includingthe "Were To Buy Hardwood Plywood &Veneer Directory" a listing of sources and information for specifiers, purchasers and users of hardwood plywood.

To maintain its position as spokesman of the hardwood plywood industry, the association participates in a number of industry affiliated organizations including the National Forest Products Association, where they have nine consultants working on

building codes, insurance rates and wood construction standards as they apply to hardwood plywood, the International Conference of Building Officials, Southern Building Code Congress, National Fire Protection Association and Building Officials and Code Administrators International.

Wherever and however hardwood plywood is involved, HPMA is there as a professional partner, aiding and contributing to the growth of its members and the industrv.

year period, with 1975 being the next lowest at 5,872 BBF. Peak year was 1978 with 7,402 BBF. This over 7,000 BBF production held for three years before dropping to 6,194 BBF inl98l at the beginning of the building slump.

The variable between Southern and Appalachian production remained fairly stable until 1982 when Appalachia produced only 921 BBF, its lowest production in 13 years. The best year for that region was 1978 with 1,533 BBF produced.

Production from areas classified as "other" remained fairly constant except for the 197-80 jump to 2,611 BBF, then a drop to 2,581 and 2,533 before beginning the slump of the 80's. Southern production varied only slightly during the period charted with a variable of I106 BBF between 1970, the highest production year, and 1983, the lowest production period.

in the past 13 years has been just over 328 MBF.

Hardwood training school maintains industry standards

lN THE mid-1940s the National lHardwood Lumber Association recognized the need for an institution devoted exclusively to training hardwood lumber inspectors.

Through the years the industry had grown, more and more sawmills and purchasers were becoming grade+onscious, and there was a pressing need for qualified hardwood inspectors. Planning began, and, in February 1948, the first class was convened in Memphis, Th., under the direction of NHLA assistant chief inspector Earl S. Swartzbaugh.

Memphis was selected as the site for the school, not only because ofthe great amount of hardwood activity in this area, but also because the Lumbermen's Club of Memphis afforded an organizing group of hardwood lumbermen who could assist in setting up the school and monitoring its operation. Their interest in school activities has continued, and today the Inspection School Committee remains as one of the standing committees of the Lumbermen's Club.

in an industrial area of Memphis and offered NHLA the use, rent free, of approximately one acre of ground for the purpose of erecting school facilities. Thus the school came into being and occupied this site until the spring of 1980.

In the late 1970s several conditions combined to make this original building and site no longer suitable. The building itself was never a quality structure and was in extensive need of repair. The capacity of this original school was 50 students per class which was not large enough to meet the demands of the industry, resulting in waiting periods of one to one and one-half years before an applicant could dttend class. Furthermore, in the period of some 30 years the character of the neighborhood had changed. It became apparent that a new building in a new venue was badly needed

A search produced a new site on the eastern outskirts of Memphis. Ultimately, the association offices were moved from their leased highrise building in Chicago to the Memphis site. Today, the association executive offices and inspection training school

Through the years there have been significant changes in the length of the sessions due to the introduction of visual aids and textbooks that have permitted improvements in methods of instruction.

The school operates as a trade school or vocational school, as opposed to a technical or university level. The only course of study is the measurement and inspection of hardwood lumber. Although some information is provided concerning related subjects and field trips are held, these are for course enrichment rather than separate courses of study per se.

The school accommodates 70 students per class and three sessions each year. Tirition fee is $600 for the l4-week course of study.

Instructors for the inspection school have always been highly qualified tradesmen from NHLA's inspection staff. The current director is Robert

Since this is the only school in the world offering such an indepth study of the hardwood rules, students are attracted from all over the world.

There are no entrance requirements pertaining to race or sex and it is not unusual for the classes to contain several foreign students, women, or minorities who reside in the United States. The only basic requirements for admission are a high school education or equivalent and a knowledge of basic fractions and percentages. This knowledge of simple math is extremely important as it is the basis of the entire grading system. Prior experience in the industry is obviously desirable, but is not required or necessary, and it is not unusual for students to have no industry background whatsoever.

Each applicant must be sponsored by an NHLA member firm. This does not necessarily mean that the indi vidual is an employee of his sponsoring firm, but his request for admission must come through an NHLA member. This sponsor will interview the applicant to determine his seriousness of purpose, basic ability, and any physical handicaps that might prevent the applicant from functioning well if admitted.

The association does not have scholarships; however, several lumbermen's clubs or industry trade associations regularly make scholarship funds available to those who meet their qualifications. The school is approved for funding by the Veterans Administration for those who qualify.

Venerable hardwood wholesale firm hits 70

IrOUR GENERATIONS of active Ff.rnilu involvement have earned American Hardwood Co. the reputation of handling any type of lumber requirement with a professional attitude and quality products.

Founded in l9l4 by the late E.E. Taenzer and his son, C.R. "Bob" Taenzer, who went to California from a hardwood sawmill business in Memphis, Tn., the Los Angeles firm has an interesting origin. As the story goes, E.E., one of the founders of the National Hardwood Lumber Association and an early president of the Memphis Hardwood Lumberman's Club, was part of a family business heavily involved in exporting hardwoods to Europe.

At the time Germany invaded Belgium in 1914, the Thenzers had just shipped 250,000 board feet of oak, ash and other Southern hardwoods to Belgium, but the material was confiscated by the Germans and never paid for. Deprived of their European business, the family was forced to close the sawmill.

They then made the decision to head to the West Coast to represent fellow lumbermen from the Appalachian Mountain region through the South.

Story at a Glance

Hardwood wholesaler is one of the oldest and most diversified on the Pacilic Coast... World War I provided founding impetus . . . family management has sterling reputation ... fourth generation now involved.

They set up offices in downtown Los Angeles and brokered carloads of hickory, gum, oak and ash to the growing city. Seeing the opportunity to maintain an inventory and sell from it, they opened a lumber yard on l4th St. and Alameda. After four years, the business outgrew this location and was relocated at 1900 E. l5th St., its present location on "hardwood row."

E.E. was respected by all who knew and did business with him. He was trusted because of his sawmill knowledge and his relationship with hardwood sources across the country. When he died in 1929, management responsibilities were passed on to his two sons, Bob, who moved to California with his father, and Milton, who joined the company after completing his military duty in World War I. As president, Bob led the company through many periods of growth, setbacks, and changes. At one point, before the introduction of fork lift trucks, over 100 men were employed to handle the materials. Running a lumber business through the depression was the toughest job he

had to tackle. They trimmed employment to skin and bones. Milton and Bob even held off getting their own salary to keep the company going.

Milton as vice president was heavily involved in sales. Everybody liked Milton. He loved to work with customers and supply their lumber requirements. When he became interested in developing a new market for American Hardwood Co., in softwoods, he set up relations with many of the best pine mills in Oregon and Northern California and sold carloads of pine to the furniture, cabinet and manufacturing trades. He died in the early 1960s.

The two brothers watched out for each other and successfully managed the company through World War II, and the soaring residential growth of

Wes-Wood puilding Supp ly Inc. / Western Auto Supply, Klamath Falls, Or., held a recent grand opening for its newly remodeled store. . Empire Buildtng Supply, Klamarh Falls, Or., has been acquired by Richard Grow who will act as owner/mgr. .

Bayshore Lumber Co., Orange, Ca., is voluntarily closing after 25 years, basically due to the increased value of the land, reports John Ferguson. His son, Bill Ferguson, has purchased the L-P Home Center in Capistrano Beach, Ca., and will operate it as Capistrano Lumber Co., beginning Nov. l.

Since then, Allen and Higgins Lumber Co. was destroyed during the 1906 earthquake and fire, only to reopen in four days to help San Francisco rebuild after the catastrophe.

In the years that followed, we proudly supplied much of the exotic woods for such landmarks as William R. Hearst's San Simeon Casile, the Flood Building and the reconstruction of St. Mary's Cathedral.

After the ups and downs of the depression, the war years and another devastating fire in 1969, J. E. Higgins rebuilt again. determined to offer a wider range of products, larger inventories and expanded customer services.

I meeting was held in the beautiful red rock country at Sedona in Northern Arizona. The meeting was preceded by golf' tennis and leisure activity including a get together dinner for members and spouses.

Among highliehts of board activity' was the adoption of the report of the special membership and dues committee which worked throughout the summer to develop a more equitable yet simpler system.

The new system, with minor modifications, will be instituted the first of November and represents a big step toward the association's future. John Wyss, president, noted that the cooperation received from the membership for this project exemplifies the kind of support necessary to run an effective association.

The education committee is planning to conduct a series of product knowledge seminars this fall for retail sales people.

Expert instruction will be utilized to develop better marketing and sales techniques for the various product lines carried in typical building materials centers. It is hoped that this program will be successful and will be scheduled as an ongoing service to the membershiP'

The ALBSA welcomes two new members to the association: Foxworth-Galbraith Building Material Center, Prescott, Jim E. Hdl, manager; and Stanline, Inc., Phoenix, Richard D. Doran, manager.

President John Wyss has scheduled the next board meeting in his home town of Lake Havasu City. The meeting will be held on Monday, December l0th, and will include a weekend of all the activities

that can be enjoyed at this inviting resort/ vacation spot.

Accidents and injuries take too high a toll in lost work days and insurance claims to ignore in running a business. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports

that in 1982 (the latest year for which figures are available), there were 10.5 accidents per 100 full-time employees in Iumber and building material retailing. This compared with 7.2 accidents for retailing as a whole and only 2.5 in apparel and accessory retailing. Grocery stores rank right up there with home centers, showing 10.3 accidents per 100 employees. In building material retailing, the average number of lost work dav cases in 1982 was 4.6 per 100 employees. Nonfatal cases without lost work davs averaged 5.9. And lost work days per year averaged 68.1 per 100 full-time employees.

Most retailers list back injuries from lifting heavy objects as the most common injury. Other common injuries are caused by dropping something on the foot. Machinery and saws cause accidents, too. And many lesser injuries consist of cuts and bruises and getting a foreign object in the eye. Customers seem to be most prone to slipping, falling and tripping.

Retailers use a variety of approaches to control the problems inherent in handling heavy, unwieldy building materials. The safety-improving ideas utilized can originate with the management, the employees or the insurance carrier, since they all stand to gain when accident rates go down. Most companies rely on training programs that utilize films, manuals. meetings and posters. To deal with safety training in general, various stores have developed employee training programs.

Some companies give a special driving course to drivers and training on the forklift for the driver and people working around the lift. Others require at least one person trained in first aid at each yard. A supervisor sends in an investigating report for each accident. No one under age l8 is allowed to operate machinery. Monthly meetings on safety and loss prevention alert personnel to problems and solutions.

He will take office at the annual convention to be held Nov' 15-17 at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs.

Woodward is widely known for his innovative approach to employee incentive programs, which have greatly increased the total sales volume of his family-run business in recent years. Headquartered in the southernmost corner of the Mountain States Region, Woodward,, a Builder's Mart affiliate, has installed four different computer systems as tools for monitoring business and designing build-

In other business, the board of directors voted to create a blue ribbon, long range planning committee, which will meet to evaluate all association programs and activities and to make recommendations for item-for-item goals and objectives. The committee will consist of two members of the board of directors' one from the Insurance Trust Board, and the seven to nine members at-large, selected for geographic and business distribution.

Director Rick Heimsoth, Capital Lumber Co., Cheyenne, WY., who served as chairman for the meeting, said the need for long range planning has been intensified as a result of the rapid growth and progress the association has experienced.

"In a report submitted to the board by staff." Heimsoth said, "so far in 1984 and projected to the end ofthe year: The Association has conducted 28 schools in l4different geographic locations,on 6different topics, and served 563 student attendees. In addition, the staff has experi-

mented with video as an educational tool in the sparsely settled region, and has engaged in considerable research in this area."

Other details of the report included the insurance trust has added 900 new names to its health insurance rolls from 33 new firms. of which 17 represent retail lumber companies representing 3l separate retail locations and 16 supplier firms. This brings the total enrollment to over 2,800 employees from 194 employer units, representing a growth rate of more than 10090 in less than 2-l/2 years. In addition, the health insurance trust has added a new. self-funded dental program and is in the process of installing an in-house computer system to aid in handling the many new and diverse program options.

Decentralization of association programs and activities has been a central theme for the year. Three golf outings were held outside of the Denver Metro Area, with 97 golfers participating and 130 persons attending the golf-outing dinners. Two area breakfast meetings were held in Albuquerque and Colorado Springs, with approdmately 28 attending, and one major dinner meeting with 65 attending was held in Salt Lake City. Life member ceremonies were held in conjunction with local civic organizations in Belen, N.M., and Cortez, Co., with over 90 people attending.

WWPA fall meeting

Fewer housing starts and a stronger dollar are exPected to ease demand for western lumber in 1985, H. A. Roberts, President of the Western Wood Products Association, told the fall meeting of members in Monterey, Ca., Sept. 18.

"Total demand will be within l9o -20/o of 1984 demand-on the downside," Roberts said. "Inventories which are now slowlY sliding downward should continue down, especially in the last half of 1985.

"All in dl, 1985 will offer the same challenges as 1984."

He forecast housing starts for 1985 at 1.65 million units. The number of housing starts this year is expected to reach 1.8 million units.

This decline in residential construction will contribute most to the drop in lumber demand next year' Roberts predicts. Demand for lumber in residential construction is expected to fall 8.2s/o to 14.5 billion board feet in 1985. Residential usage is forecast to make up 39.590 of lumber consumption next Year.

The strength of the U.S. dollar and continued high interest rates may hold lumber exports in check during 1985' he said. Exports in 1984 are expected to reach 1.6 billion board feet. In 1985, lumber exports are forecast to grow only 390 to 1.65 billion board feet.

Roberts said the western lumber industry has seen a shakeout in the number of sawmills since 1978. Over the past six years, the number of mills has fallen from 818 to 669, a loss of 149 mills in the West.

However, that decline has not meant a like droP in Production. In ln9. ir took 4.5 men to Produce I million board feet of lumber a year. Today, it onlY takes 3'43 men to Produce the same amount, a 3l9o increase in productivitY.

"The 660 mills we have left in the West now have the caPacitY to make more lumber than the 818 mills we had beginning in 1979. UnfortunatelY, we cannot Put a handle on our caPacitY until we are tested.

"That time will come onlY when a sizeable increase in demand brings about full production, a futher loss of mills. or a combination thereof," Roberts said.

Highlights from the board of directors and committee meetings included executive board recommendation that the grading service rate be reduced to 250 per MBF, effective Oct. l, 1984' with a corresponding reduction in rates being charged members. TheY also reaffirmed implementation of a dues increase of l0o Per MBF, also effective Oct. l. The net result of the two changes will be a 50 increase.

The economic services committee discussed reports that southern and eastern U.S. softwood Production and consumPtion volumes have been drastically understated due to Bureau of Census underestimates and noted that correction of lumber production statistics in the U.S. will result in changes in the Percent of Canadian share of total U'S. consumption and changes in forest management planning as related to the suPPlY and demand outlook.

The export committee aPProved a joint NFPA/WWPA PeoPle's RePubiic of China trade mission in late April or early May, 1985. The marketing services committee approved the Impetus Marketing program and budget needs of $2,841,m0 for the second year of the five Year Program.

China Market Investigated

China has been determined to be a promising market for U.S. wood products by the Western Wood products Association and the National Forest Products Association, who in cooperation with the U.S. Foreign Agricultural Service participated in an investigative mission to that country.

Attempting to identify possible market development projects and stress to the Chinese the importance of their purchasing more processed wood products from the United States, the study group arrived at two major conclusions.

(1) China, now the U.S. forest industry's third largest export customer, will continue to be a growing market.

(2) Significant penetration with

processed products, such as lumber and plywood, will take a major commitment to market development by the industry in cooperation with the U.S. government.

China is considered a promising market for U.S. wood products because of its high GNP growth rate plus expanding construction with ll million homes a year built. The Chinese, who are receptive to developmental efforts by the U.S., have domestic forest locations and distribution problems which favor imports.

John V. Ward, NFPA vice president-international trade; Craig Larson, WWPA; William Hoffmeier, FAS, Washington, and Norman Kallemeyn, agricultural counselor in Beijing, China, were among those

conducting 25 interviews with more than 55 key people in China and Hong Kong.

Lookalike Label Settlement

Settlement has been reached in suits filed by SK Hand Tool Corp., Chicago, Il., accusing several companies of distributing hand tool products with labeling and packaging resembling SK labeling and packaging. (See The Merchanl, July, 1984, page 68).

Pay 'n Save Acquisition

Pay'n Save Corp., Seattle, Wa., operator of l13 home centers, drug stores and apparel stores in l0Western states, has received an offer from an investment group headed by Tiump Group, New York, to acquire the company for about $334 million or $22 a share.

Pay 'n Save, has been updating their home centers and expanding into warehouse marketing. Senior officers are expected to remain with the company if the acquisition is completed, according to a Pay 'n Save spokesman.

Chandler Corp.'s New Name

flooring area. Others use displays provided by manufacturers or design their own. Regardless, it is essential that displays be updated and supplemented with new patterns frequently. Literature for the customer to read and take home is vital. Reproductions of the handsome rooms shown in the brochures can make captivating displays.

A complete stock of product must be available. It is recommended that a dealer handle the cabin grade as well as both the standard and better grades. This allows him to cater to the budget minded as well as the more affluent customer. Customers attracted by price will often want to upgrade their purchase to standard or better quality.

In addition to the actual wood, the dealer must have available all the supplies necessary to installing and maintaining a hardwood floor. All of the several types of available adhesives, flooring nails, expansion fillers, prefinished and unfinished moulding, trim products and a variety of stains are suggested. Installation tools such as trowels also must be in stock. After-installation floor care products will bring customers back or attract new customers who find the grocery store type floor products unsatisfactory. All these products will reinforce

your image as a hardwood flooring center.

Advertising and publicizing the hardwood flooring department helps bring in customers. Promotions utilizing window displays, newspaper publicity and tie-ins with home shows and model homes can be useful.

Big 10 in Lumber Production

Lumber production in the United States is dominated by 100 companies that are responsible for producing nearly two-thirds of all the lumber produced in this country.

The 10 largest companies in the country accounted for one-quarter of the total. About 8690 of the 5l.9 billion board feet of lumber produced in the U.S. and Canada in 1983 was accounted for in the survey conducted by Forest Industries Magazine..

In l97l only 4590 of the lumber was produced by the top 100 companies with the top l0 producing l89o of the total.

Weyerhaeuser was the largest producer with 3.12 billion board feet produced at 33 mills. Georgia-Pacific was second with 1.80 billion feet made at 37 mills. Third place slot is held by Louisiana-Pacific which produced 1.68 billion board feet at 66 mills. No. 4 was Champion International with 1.27 billion produced at 23 mills. Canfor Ltd., Canada's top producer, was in fifth place with 1.16 billion feet produced at 14 mills.

Since the deregulation of motor carriers by the ICC, there has been confusion about how much a driver has to do when making a delivery.

Oak Used in Tables DroPs

Oak's popularitY as a furniture wood is dropping, according to figures tabulated at the JulY summer market in San Francisco, Ca.

Dropping to 22.20/o from 27 .7s/o in January, 1983, and 24.6s/oin January, 1984, both in San Francisco, the wood has almost reached the 2l .20/o level of the January 1983 market in Dallas, Tx. Furniture authorities point out that smaller floor plans may be influencing the selection of smaller tables and less bold wood character. Oak, ash, elm and pine have all droPPed to represent only 21 .10/o compared to 34.10/o in January, 1983, in San Francisco.

Surveys of furniture trends based on occasional table studies are conducted at the San Francisco and Dallas markets twice each year by crews from Northwest Hardwoods, Portland, Or. "The surveys provide a fairly consistent indication of trends in wood styles and colors," saYs Dave McCullam, vice President of the firm.

Figures show that the close grain woods of northwest alder, hard and soft maple, paper and Yellow birch

showed a slight drop in usage though they were used extensivelY in the painted (enamel, lacquer or polyester) table groups which jumPed to 890 of the total display spaces.

Walnut and cherry tied at 4.790 followed closely by mahogany at 4'3s/0. Pecan-hickory and the manY burls dropped a bit. It is interesting to note that the 1984 figures from San Francisco approximate the total shown in Dallas a year ago.

The big difference is in the painted groups which represent a change in room decor. A number of the tables surveyed had part exPosed wood and part painted surfaces which made it desirable that the wood sPecies be capable of presenting a delightful wood grain and still provide a smooth paint surface.

Glass was a PoPular treatment on table tops. The metal, glass and marble construction jumPed in San Francisco from 12.9s/o to l5'9o/o which parallels the Dallas figure of a year ago. At the same time there were many additions to the wicker, rattan, bamboo presentations now at 5.090. Fabric and leather continued to grow with the combined "other than

wood" categories being 24.690 of the market showroom spaces'

The style story was almost a repeat of past markets as most firms staYed with established lines with few innovations. It was pointed out that this was one of the reasons given for lack of attendance as firms stayed with established suppliers waiting for the fall and winter markets to add to their lines. This brought a furor of talk about reducing the introductions to once a year and diminishing the markets, according to McCullam' Regionals, of course, are active on a daily or weekly basis for nearby furniture and design organizations.

With contemporary-transitional at 58.890 (due in large measure to the glass-metal groups) English styles were second most poPular at 12,5s/o followed by French at 8.090. Oriental jumped to 9.590 in third Place, with many authentic presentations as well as a larger number of painted reproductions. Early American, alwaYs lower in San Francisco than in Dallas, was at 6.ls/o with rustic-ranch continuing down to 1.890. Classic Italian was 2.70/o with Spanish holding at .6v/0.

son, sales manager, explains what they call pull marketing strategy. "The basis for this strategy is simple," he says. "We make a quality product that we're proud to Put our name onwith the result that satisfied customers ask for Diamond Wood Products by name through their supplier."

"Alder and maPle are our bread and butter," he explains. They are the most abundant hardwoods in the Northwest. This is important because Diamond Wood uses between 25 and 27 log truck loads of them per day'" Production averages out to be 8090 alder, l59o maPle and 590 a mixture of Oregon white oak and California black oak.

ager, obtains the finest logs available and that Diamond practices what they call the best milling procedures within the industry.

After the sawmill produces rough green lumber, the next step is drying the wood to the proper moisture content at their dry kiln facilities. Then the dried lumber is surfaced by a multiple knive Oliver Strato Planer. Careful inspection by certified graders before application of grade-stamp assures a superior product, Harrison emphasizes.

A modern bandmill with an 8 ft. double-cut bandsaw headrig and a 54 inch resaw backed up with the appropriate equipment, the mill produces over 35 million b.f. of grade-stamped hardwood lumber and pallet stock annually for gross sales exceeding $lO million.

The company is emphatic in administering its preventative maintenance program. Almost a dozen millwrights maintain a constant check on the mill. Stethoscopes are used to locate bad bearings for worn parts before they cause a problem. They also operate a complete saw filing shop. Down time is virtually eliminated with their stringent procedures.

The company originated in l97l as a cedar shake mill and was later purchased by interests including the Willamette Valley Co., a major producer and supplier of chemicals for the industry. As the cedar market declined. they picked up the slack with alder and maple. Updating of equipment has been continuous since the switch to hardwood.

Robert G. Harrison, principal owner of the Willamette Valley Co., and the father of Jim, bought the company completely in 1982. Surrounding property for expansion was purchased at that time. It is thought that Diamond is the largest single privatelyowned hardwood sawmill in the U.S. Management is committed to making Diamond Wood Products a solid factor in the hardwood business and it looks as if they are succeeding.

Whoa...don't say it can't be done! It can! Virginia Hardwood did this very same thing with hardwood flooring dealers several years ago and it proved overwhelmingly successful. And there is no reason why the same success couldn't hold true today.

Start with this truism. CurrentlY, banks, savings and loans, and finance companies all have plenty of money to loan and are loudly proclaiming their eagerness to do so. Most of us have been recipients of letters from these institutions attesting to their willingness to arrange loans. One major bank chain even had its tellers making a strong loan pitch after the conclusion of every transaction.

What must be done to obtain the okaY for setting up a hardwood display in these institutions is to make the financial offitcials aware of the loan possibilities that exist for them if their customers remodel or build a house addition that would include classy hardwood flooring.

Years ago, when it was requested, a Virginia Hardwood salesman would accompany the hardwood flooring dealer to the financial institution (starting with the bank that handled the company account)' They would explain to the bank manager' vice president, or the person in authority the details of the display and the residual benefits of having it in his lobby. It would be emphasized that the display would be strictly first class and low key, in keeping with the best traditions of the financial world. In most cases, the idea was accepted.

Don't be bashful about approaching the financial institutions with this con' cept. Believe me, they are looking for ideas that will increase their loan schedule. The hardwood display could show a variety of patterns and textures. A multiplex unit could be utilized, perhaps an easel or two with some parquet patterns. Hardwood flooring brochures would be available. Actually, each display should be tailor made to each particular lobby since there will be more floor space available in some than in others.

Most important, don't disregard this idea. It could mean a great deal to you in future business.

Upbeat Hardware Show

New participation records were set at the Hardware Industry Week/ National Hardware Show 1984 in Chicago, Il., Aug. 12-16.

A new look, including an upgraded appearance, higher visibility for the lawn and garden divisions and longer show hours, continued into theeducational offerings and the Retail Concepts Center. Popular with retailers and others concerned with store layout and merchandising concepts, this section, staffed by National Retail Hardware Association store planning personnel, was helpful to those interested in making changes in their store operation.

More than 850 new products were displayed in the New Products Exposition which had been increased 2090 in size. Approximately 10,000 persons visited this portion of the show.

The 1985 Hardware Industry Week/ National Hardware Show was set for Aug. 1l-15 at the McCormick Place and McCormick Place West location.

Calif. Lumber Use Increases

Western destinations continued to claim the majority of softwood produced in the 12 western states in the first half of this year. Of all softwood produced in the area, 70.90/o went to western destinations as compared to 68.4s/o during all of 1983.

California ranked first with 32.40/o of all western lumber shipments, an increase from 28.80/o the previous year. Improved home building was credited with this rise in use. Oregon was second, receiving 12.9a/0, down from 13.20/o in'83. Washington remained in third place with 8.190. Other states fell b nalo from 18.390 the previous year.

Unfavorable freight rates and competition from other species in the midwest and east accounted for the western emphasis. Western shipments from other Eueas of the nation also were down: south, 13.490 from 14.7 Vo: north central, ll.89o from 12.890 and northeast, 3.90/o from 4.lo/o

Shake & Pour Cement Mixer

Following a method used for mixing corn bread, a bag which can be used as a concrete mixer for a small job thus eliminating the need for a wheelbarrow, shovel or other type of mixing equipment is being marketed by the Charles Corp.

A l0 lb. bag of dry ready mix can be transferred to the Minit Mixer and, with water added, reportedly mixed in 60 seconds or less. The mixing bag can be used to transport the mixed concrete to the forms where it is poured directly from the flexible opening. The bag is made from a specially formulated fabric designed and engineered to withstand the abrasion of rock, sand and cement, according to the manufacturer. It can be reused.

Plastic Finished Tileboard

Masonite Corp. has introduced Royaltile, a new line of l/8' tileboard, available in eight different designs and colors.

The plastic finished hardboard paneling is designed to be used in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and other severe moisture areas in both remodeling and new construction. The plastic finish is fused at high temperature to a base of l/8' tempered hardboard which has been treated for durability. The finish is unharmed by steam or water.

The 4'x8 ' panels can be used to cover old and new walls, cracked plaster, or soiled paint and paper.

Waterproof, prefinished vinyl moldings are available in colors complementing the tileboard.

Pruning Trio

An anvil pruner with adjustable tension control is one of three new pruners by Tiue Temper.

Model AP4 offers a wide range of pressure settings for various cutting needs and individual strength. It features a replaceable, anti-friction Xylan coated, precision-ground steel blade and coated metal anvil. Versatile Carpeting

Foss Manufacturing Co. has a new line of polyester carpeting for general indoor/outdoor use.

The brilliant and uniform colors and color fastness properties are a result of a solution-dying process in which coloring pigments, ultraviolet stabilizers and other additives are added directly to the polyester resin and completely mixed before extrusion into fiber.

In addition, the carpet is said to be able to withstand long-term exposure to staining and soiling. The nonwoven carpet is lightweight, and resilient to tears, punctures and abrasion.

Five different constructions are available as standard, high density flat, velour, cord, geometric, and hobnail. They are offered in 25 solid colors, with optional color blends.

Compact Heating System

A new forced air heating system, the Register, by Cadet Manufacturing Co. is a compact zonal system designed for either conventional or modular construction.

The system does not require furnace or ductwork and operates quietly. Its low placement, just 4 l/4'from the floor, makes it versatile and unobtrusive. With each room controlled by its own thermostat, the system can also be used as a complement to passive solar designs.

The 14 " x 7 3/8" neutral finished wall grill completes the unit which

comes with 20 gauge wire-through wall mounting can and integral junction box. The system is said to be easy to install on new as well as on retrofit installation.

Blows Hot AirAway

A new series of Spinnaker Paddle fans has been introduced by NuTone for use in rooms with low ceilings.

The product is said to form a strong, lasting bond that actually outlasts the wood itself. Applied with a caulking gun, the adhesive is unaffected by moisture, low temperatures, and freeze-thaw cycles. It bonds to almost any surface including concrete, masonry, brick, stone or metal.

Available in I I oz. and quart-size caulking cartridges, it can be used by professionals as well as do-it-yourselfers.

Brick Look.A.Like

Pan-Brick, Inc. has introduced a new siding with a brick finish look and high insulation capability.

The 16" x 48" panels combine actual clay brick facing with plywood sheathing, polyurethane insulation and integral mortar joints. They can be applied directly to wood or steel studs without adhesives or sealants.

Each panel weighs 35 lbs., resulting in an overall weight of about 3 tons for a three-bedroom house.

Easy Change

No screwdriver or other tool is required to change the blade of the new Swivel-Lock knife by Stanley.

The two sides of the knife are held together with a button lock at the base

third generation member of the family, new stock was beginning to arrive the next day. The three, as a team' laid out plans to rebuild. After a lengthy clean up period, the new facilities were completed with capacity to warehouse under cover over 2 million board feet of lumber. A complete mill was set up to run all tYPes of millwork.

Bill Moore took over as President after organizing the new plant. His involvement in purchasing and sales under Bob Thenzer's guidance gave him a strong base, augmented bY his dedication and intimate knowledge of the business. He has been active, coordinating purchasing, manufacturing and sales with his team of employees. His reputation for honesty and ability is respected industrY-wide.

Bob Tbenzer is celebrating his 9oth birthday this year and continues to be involved in planning and running the company. His grandson, Robert Kincaid, a vice president, shares an office with him, absorbing more of his grandfather's experience every day.

Kincaid points out that the management is continually working to keep up with changes in equiPment and material handling. Managers keep directly involved on a day to day basis to fine tune the oPerations. Younger employees joining the team contribute new enthusiasm and technical background. The companY is proud that it is one of the few hardwood firms employing a woman on the order desk.

A good mix of young and well seasoned employees assures customers of qualified assistance. Many of their employees have worked for the com-

LZOU'VE come a long way, baby" U could well be the slogan for one of the West's own hardwoods-alder.

In the last 60 years it has moved from being a weed tree left to rot or be burned in the forest to an acceptable commercial hardwood.

The Northwest Hardwood Association, now the Western Hardwood Association, was formed in 1955 with the objective of establishing a quality control program to assure alder's reputation. Alder grades which had been defined by the National Hardwood Lumber Association since 1932 were revised in l%l as a joint effort between NHLA and the new association. These grading rules were and are applied under the supervision of an independent grading agency.

Promotion of alder has been a constant goal of the association with an on-going advertising and promotion campaign to emphasize the quality and potential of the wood. The market continues to grow, David A. Sweitzer, secretary-manager of the association, points out.

Southern California is a prime market for alder with furniture and cabinet manufacturers using large amounts. Furniture manufacturers in

the southeastern states also use sizable quantities of alder resulting in a good market for the western hardwood in that area. The Far East and EuroPe account for "bigger and bigger demands on kiln dried alder lumber," Sweitzer reports.

Western alder thrives in the low, moist conditions of the Pacific Northwest; a prolific, fast growing species. More than 18 billion board feet have been classified as commercial grade. Alder saw timber supply exceeds the total supply of soft maple by 3590, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Alder supplies also exceed supplies of birch, basswood and aspen although there is less alder than poplar, sugar and black maple. Western alder has an advantage in that it is available all year in popular thicknesses from4/14 to l2/4.

Alder took getting used to on the part of the buyers because of several important differences in grading. It is always graded from the best face after kilndrying and surfacing on two sides to l/16" scant of nominal. hit or miss. Unlike eastern species, all kiln and planer defects are graded out.

It is often possible to substitute 4/4 lumber for 5/4 eastern lumber because of the uniform surfacing to 15/16'hit or miss. Kilndried western alder is quoted, invoiced and delivered on the basis of net board footage tallied after kilndrying with no addition of footage for kiln-drying shrinkage.

Western alder is a close or fine grained wood much like cherry, birch and maple. Its density or hardness is comparable to Appalachian soft maple. Because there is no color dif-

ference between the heartwood and sapwood, it is a uniform light tan or honey color. The color can stand well on its own, but. beca.use it accepts stains readily, much of the alder used is finished to match another wood. Sap, mineral streaks, dark color and stain are rarely found. Western alder has a light pattern which helps with printing and matching it with any other species of veneers without bleaching.

Workability of alder ranks a high 9 or l0 in all classifications on a scale of 10. This makes it the most consistently workable hardwood across these categories.

Alder performs well in solid cut stock, turning squares, glued up panels and laminated woods as well as

in turnings and specialty products. It is often used as the frame in upholstered furniture or exposed in finished wood furniture such as dining room and bedroom suites. Because it

finishes well, it is a natural for antique reproductions and cabinets.

ln 1977 sales reached $200 million with 146 mbf of alder and 329,m bone dry units of chips selling in the primary market. In addition, the secondary use of alder in Oregon, Washington and California added $145 million to the primary value of the lumber.

Three years later, in 1980, the primary market had grown to $285 million with 159 mbf of alder and 320,000 bone dry units of chips.

Alder sawmills employed 1085 people in 1977 with a payroll of $12 million. In '80 these figures rose to 1240 employees with a payroll of $18 million. The labor intensive secondary alder market accounted for 6961 employees in 19'7'1 earning $69 million. In 1980 the number of people employed rose to 7600 with salaries pegged at $93 million.

Georqe Louis ScharPf died in EugeneJ Or., June 26, 1984, of lung cancer. He was 69.

A former University of Oregon track star, he was a managing partner in Scharpf's Twin Oaks Builder's Supply from 1953 until his retirement inl973. He had worked as manager at Monarch Lumber Co., Browning, Mt., and was a co-founder of ScharPf Brothers in Albany, Or.

Mr. Scharpf was active in numerous organizations including the Western Building Material Association where he was a 40 year member and a Past director. He is survived by two children, two grandchildren, a brother and a sister.

Sweitzer sees a steady increase in lumber and chiP production as well as pallet production. "Only steady growth in the next three and a half to four years is seen for alder production of kiln dried lumber, pallet stock and chiPs," he forecasts.

The Western Hardwood Association headquartered in Portland, Or., consists of 80 members including producers, mills, wholesalers, brokers, distribution yards and manufacturers. All are active in promoting the quality of alder and pride themselves that their mark on a piece of the lumber has become a customer's assurance of quality.
