Upbeat Hardware Show
New participation records were set at the Hardware Industry Week/ National Hardware Show 1984 in Chicago, Il., Aug. 12-16.
A new look, including an upgraded appearance, higher visibility for the lawn and garden divisions and longer show hours, continued into theeducational offerings and the Retail Concepts Center. Popular with retailers and others concerned with store layout and merchandising concepts, this section, staffed by National Retail Hardware Association store planning personnel, was helpful to those interested in making changes in their store operation.
More than 850 new products were displayed in the New Products Exposition which had been increased 2090 in size. Approximately 10,000 persons visited this portion of the show.
The 1985 Hardware Industry Week/ National Hardware Show was set for Aug. 1l-15 at the McCormick Place and McCormick Place West location.

Calif. Lumber Use Increases
Western destinations continued to claim the majority of softwood produced in the 12 western states in the first half of this year. Of all softwood produced in the area, 70.90/o went to western destinations as compared to 68.4s/o during all of 1983.
California ranked first with 32.40/o of all western lumber shipments, an increase from 28.80/o the previous year. Improved home building was credited with this rise in use. Oregon was second, receiving 12.9a/0, down from 13.20/o in'83. Washington remained in third place with 8.190. Other states fell b nalo from 18.390 the previous year.
Unfavorable freight rates and competition from other species in the midwest and east accounted for the western emphasis. Western shipments from other Eueas of the nation also were down: south, 13.490 from 14.7 Vo: north central, ll.89o from 12.890 and northeast, 3.90/o from 4.lo/o
