Being the autumn issue of The Installer it means it’s the last one of the year and about this time I am usually saying where did that year go as it always feels like it flies by. I’m sure many of our readers feel the same. However, 2020 feels somewhat different as it has felt at times, that we’ve been wading through treacle as the COVID-19 pandemic has put its claws into every walk of our lives.

As a trade institute we are here to serve our installer and retailer members and its they who have been at the coal face in dealing with lockdowns and consumer uncertainty, which has meant that showrooms have had to close and fitters subsequently having to wait, without work, to get the all clear to begin working in people’s homes again.

It feels like the BiKBBI has been at the epicentre of all this and to say our team has been stretched to the limits would be an understatement. But we are getting through it – I would say we are getting there but there is no time limit to when the pandemic will recede enough for us to get back to normality again. I think we are the proverbial duck in the pond where we may appear to you that we are drifting along comfortably but I can assure you that our feet are furiously paddling beneath the surface to ensure that our members are looked after from lobbying government officials to reassuring worried installers who are struggling.

As it is the last issue of the year I would like to take this opportunity to thank our members who have stuck by us and understand that we have to work together to achieve things, our incredible sponsors and partners for putting their faith in the organisation and finally to my team here at the BiKBBI who have roiled up their sleeves and gone beyond the call of duty. My apologies to anyone I may have left out.

BiKBBI CEO, Damian Walters, was invited to join the BBC One Wales X-Ray team in Cardiff last week, in an episode involving a viewer and the problems he was having with a kitchen installation from 2019.

The episode, which was broadcast on Monday (19th October) in Wales, explored consumer rights and how people should approach disputes with tradespeople.

In this episode, Damian advised viewers to work with their installer in the first instance, but to escalate the matter to the retailer if the installation was purchased via a retailer.

All in all, great branding and recognition for the institute.

In fact, It was Charlton who helped me through the final stages of my rehab. With their support, belief and encouragement I am back fit, strong and ready to play again. TRAILBLAZER GARNERS INDUSTRY SUPPORT

September saw BiKBBI CEO Damian Walters warn the industry to “act now to avoid a catastrophe” as he called upon the sector to unite on the subject of apprenticeships.

Working with strategic partners at The Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance (FIESTA) and specialist End Point Assessment agency Achieve + Partners, BiKBBI is supporting a Trailblazer for the review of the current Level 2 Fitted Interiors Apprenticeship, which is the industry’s opportunity to ensure the

apprenticeship is both continued and developed for future use.

The BiKBBI has confirmed that in response over 600 businesses have registered their support for apprenticeships via its online registration of interest (www. supportchange.org. uk) with almost 100 volunteering to be part of the Trailblazer group itself!

Damian commented by saying: “Despite challenging times for the country, it’s clear that the industry has responded well to our call to action. As well as some of the

BiKBBI CONFIRMS CONTINUED SPONSORSHIP SUPPORT

The BiKBBI is continuing its sponsorship of Charlton Athletic Women’s Football Club for the 2020/21 season, which will coincide with the launch of a new digital strategy for the Women’s Championship side.

BiKBBI’s sponsorship of Charlton Athletic Women begun in 2018 and despite the challenges faced by many businesses this year, the government sanctioned organisation is keen to maintain its support for both the club and women’s football in general.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, CEO Damian Walters said: “The continued synergy between the male dominated sport and vocational careers remain apparent. Both

the world of football and home improvement / construction would benefit enormously from a more gender balanced representation.”

Damian added: “Now is not the time to withdraw support. In fact, this is the time to get behind it more than ever.

Charlton Athletic Women need local businesses and supporters to get behind this club and to support its reach into the community and thousands of children.

Girls should be encouraged to play football and with our partnership they’ll also be made aware of the opportunities that exist within the home improvement industry, including the fitted interiors apprenticeship we devised and champion.”

national brands, including John Lewis & Partners, B&Q, Sharps Bedrooms and Howdens, we’ve seen scores of independent businesses step up and show support for apprenticeships”.

The BiKBBI have spent the last 2 years working in partnership with South Essex College and Prospects College of Advanced Technology to develop and deliver the Level 2 apprenticeship and Damian Walters confirmed last month of the organisation’s plan to replicate the successes of the trial with training providers across the country.

commented by saying: “BiKBBI’s continued sponsorship of Charlton Athletic Women’s Football Club is to be applauded. Football has a real job to readjust post-COVID and it is this type of support that helps us to survive. But we need more support and we invite other businesses

to follow suit and get involved.”

Part of BiKBBI’s sponsorship with Charlton Women’s Football Club will be to launch a new digital strategy to include a brand new mobile responsive website, that will form a home for the wider digital plan and to further reach out into the community. Further

details for this will be announced soon.

Charlton Athletic Women are looking for sponsors and partners to help support them throughout the 2020/21 season and beyond. If you are interested, especially in being part of the new website launch, please email:

Shower manufacturer Aqualisa has introduced its own exciting new, high quality range of brassware to reinforce its position as a leading UK bathroom brand. A new bath shower mixer tap with a ‘microphone’ handset has been added to the existing Aqualisa basin mixer tap and deck mounted bath filler to create the new Uptown range.

The range primarily aims to meet the requirements of the housebuilder and developer marketplace which looks to provide a coordinated bathroom look and give specifiers and designers the ability to source and select bathroom products from a single reliable and quality source. Equally, Uptown taps provide an attractive, standalone brassware range for wider market options.

Aqualisa CEO Colin Sykes believes the bath shower mixer completes the Uptown range, immediately making it a better proposition for specifiers and designers: “These specialists are constantly looking for options and upgrades from recognised, trusted brands that suit a variety of bathroom configurations. The wider range of Uptown brassware paves the way for our introduction of more tap variants later in the year.”

Competitively priced, Uptown taps can be matched with the Mian DCV mixer range to create a contemporary and stylish suite

of bathroom brassware, the ideal proposition for new-build installations and refurbishment projects. Suitable for all approved UK plumbing systems, the small and large Uptown single lever monobloc basin taps include a push-open waste while the bath shower mixer features a sleek, robust body, smooth turn levers and integrated diverter, with all components supplied in one box and guaranteed for 5 years. It has a competitive RRP of £155.00 excluding VAT.

The Uptown range will be followed by two additional ranges of brassware in the Autumn opening the way for some stylish shower and tap combinations for the modern bathroom. “The Uptown range”, according to Colin Sykes, “introduces quality brassware to the established Aqualisa portfolio and is very much a new business opportunity for us. These are exciting times for the Aqualisa brand and a strong brassware offering will only enhance our sector credentials in the months and years ahead,” he adds.

IDS ADDS WALNUT WOODGRAIN TO ITS TUSCAN SOLID WOOD WORKSURFACES COLLECTION

The IDS Tuscan solid wood worksurfaces collection has been enhanced with a new engineered walnut option that will deliver the same luxurious looks as solid timber but at a more affordable price point.

The worksurface features a 3mm surface layer of prime quality walnut bonded to a 24mm thick chipboard core and is precision finished on all edges. The thinner layer of wood delivers premium grade aesthetics, while also being a more sustainable use of natural resources.

The worktop is also lighter in weight to transport, handle and install on site.

The walnut worksurfaces are available in two sizes of 3000 x 650 x 27mm and 2400 x 950 x 27mm and are supplied with two types of edging strips. Along the front edge, they run linear along the length and on the short edges provide an end grain effect, making the worktops indistinguishable from the look and feel of solid walnut.

Engineered Walnut is now part of the 14-strong Tuscan solid wood worktop range which offers a selection of whitewashed, stained and classic timbers including European Oak, Walnut, Iroko, Brown Ash and Country Beech. There are also four pre-oiled oak options in clear or

stained finishes of Chalk, Fossil and Espresso Oak. Thicknesses start from a slimline 26mm through to 60mm and lengths from 1.2m to 4m. Matching upstands are also available for all species and colours.

The Oak, Walnut, Ash and Beech Tuscan timbers are fully FSC® and PEFC™ certified with Iroko complying with EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) requirements, underlining the range’s environmental credentials.

SALES OF ROMAN'S THREE PART CLEANING SYSTEM BOOM

Shower designer and manufacturer, Roman, saw a rapid return to previous levels of output after lockdown restrictions were lifted. But times are now clearly different.

Although Roman has embraced and promoted bathroom hygiene for decades, it’s now never been more important since COVID-19 broke into our lives. However, apart from regular cleaning agents, domestic bathroom hygiene products are possibly consumers least considered bathroom product.

Consumer research conducted in 2018 by the BMA concluded that hygiene was one of the key purchasing considerations. Hygiene has always been a core pillars in the design process of Roman’s products. Subsequently, all ranges are

coated with Roman Ultra Care which seals the glass for longterm optical clarity and also benefits the end-user in the fact that it is easy-clean

Roman say that sales are rocketing for Roman’s 3-part cleaning system for glass that may have discoloured or gone grey with age and use. This works on any glass around the house, not just showers. The first cream cleanses and takes the glass back to its original clean form; the second is exactly the protective glass coating factory applied by Roman; and the third is simply the Ultra Care product for ongoing cleaning and care.

Roman’s Liberty range features a genuine hygiene breakthrough by eliminating the need for any silicone on the vertical wall fixings. Instead, a hydro-active tape system, compresses inside

the aluminium profiles during installation and seals fully from the inside of the profile. This negates the need for any vertical silicone which transforms the

DESIGNED TO INSPIRE

Vitra Publishes New Dedicated Brochures for Both Retailers and Consumers

Based on market research and customer feedback, VitrA has taken a new approach to its product literature for both the Designer Collection and Bathroom Collection by publishing a consumerfocused brochure and a separate brochure for use by showroom staff.

The consumer brochures are packed with inspiring lifestyle imagery and innovative ideas, making it easy for them to make an informed choice. The technical information is kept simple, with just the essential product dimensions. The brochure for retail showrooms is more technical with exact sizes, technical drawings plus clear information about colours and product features.

The Designer Collection brochures feature ranges designed in collaboration with top name designers such as Arik Levy, Noa, Ross Lovegrove, Sebastian Conran, Terri Pecora, Claudio Bellini, and Matteo Thun, as well as ranges designed by the VitrA in-house design team. This includes the new range Voyage by Arik Levy. The collection focuses on clean, modern, minimalist design.

The Bathroom Collection brochures feature comprehensive ranges to suit domestic and commercial settings, including the popular S50, Integra and Valarte ranges. The consumer version also includes striking inspirational pages laid out in mood-board styles like Gadget Heaven, Country Classic and Small Spaces.

“We understand how confusing it can be for consumers to choose the right products for their new bathroom and by separating the information, we can help to bring some clarity and make the decision making that bit easier. Equally, the retailers can provide excellent customer service by having technical information at their fingertips.” explains Marketing Manager Margaret Talbot. “Consumers want to see the products and be inspired – apart from the basic dimensions and colours options, other technical information is less relevant for them, and importantly it encourages them to discuss the design with their retailer or installer. The new brochure format concentrates on looks to create the perfect, life-enhancing modern bathroom.”

The new brochures can be seen online at www.vitra.co.uk/brochures

MHK APPOINTS NEW CHAIRMAN AFTER FOUNDER PASSES AWAY

Following the death of Founder and Chairman Hans Strothoff in August, buying group MHK has appointed Werner Heilos as its new Chairman.

Strothoff had a long and successful career and before founding the buying group MHK in 1980 had worked for Finnish furniture company Asko and Designo in Stuttgart.

Prof Rainer Kirchdörfer, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the MHK Group AG, with the MHK board of directors, presented details of the future management of the MHK Group to its employees at a memorial ceremony.

Kirchdörfer said: “Hans Strothoff has decreed that the MHK Group will remain together in its entirety.”

As executor of the will, Kirchdörfer will implement Strothoff’s ideas and wishes – and thus the new structure, which consists of the establishment and staffing of a foundation.

Kirchdörfer continued: “The individual MHK companies will be listed directly or indirectly under the future foundation. For the employees and shareholders of the MHK Group, this new structure will not result in any noticeable changes.”

The board of directors will be made up of six members.

The majority of the board has remained the same, but new board member Donald Schieren has been promoted to Werner Heilos’s former procurement role as Heilos takes up the role as Chairman.

The board consists of: Wolfgang Becker, central settlement system, payment risk and business management; Frank Bermbach, banking and financial services; Dr Olaf Hoppelshäuser, sales, logistics and facility management; Kirk Mangels, marketing and corporate communication and Donald Schieren, procurement marketing. Heilos will handle strategic direction, human resources, finance and legal affairs.

Heilos said: “Entirely in the spirit of Hans Strothoff, we will continue to manage the MHK Group in the usual manner and jointly expand our market leadership.”

Kirchdörfer added: “From my discussions with the various committees, I can report how unanimously these decisions were welcomed by all sides. This, too, is a clear signal of the cohesion within the MHK Group. The management board and the supervisory board will coordinate very closely and as a team will do everything in their power to lead the MHK Group into the future in the spirit of Hans Strothoff.”

COMPUSOFT’S NEW

PRODUCT

NAVIGATOR AIMS TO MAKE UPSELLING EASIER

CAD specialist Compusoft has launched it a new Product Navigator to help showrooms upsell by allowing products to be searched and compared easily.

The new function is within Winner Design and it allows users to search using key product attributes and compare all appropriate matches side by side. The new tool has a variety of useful sales materials, which will allow a designer to answer any questions clients may have.

Product Navigator is webenabled and can be accessed anywhere, including a tablet device, which frees up designers to move around the showroom with a customer.

Compusoft UK Managing Director Alex Ainge said: “Our customers have told us that they need to have the fantastic sales information available in Winner Design at their fingertips, as they

walk through their showroom.

“Product Navigator does just that. By using the data from our catalogues, this sales tool improves upselling kitchen products, making it easier for customers to see and compare different products.”

Other key functions include a comparison view, where you can look at different brands side-byside to compare specifications.

Media content includes extra sales materials for products, such as videos, website links and technical drawings. There is also a wish list function, where a customer’s favourite products can be added and found easily.

All of these new features integrated into Winner Design, which means products can be directly imported into a design, quotation and order list in one step.

AMERICAN KBIS SHOW WILL BE ONLINE ONLY

The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) has announced that its Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) will now be fully virtual.

The in-person event that was scheduled to take place on February 9-11, 2021, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, has been cancelled. The show would have run alongside the International Builders’ Show (IBS), organised by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

The NKBA says that the health and safety of the exhibitors, attendees, partners and employees remains is its top priority. The organisation is confident it will be able to host a live event in February 8-10, 2022

at the same venue.

The current coronavirus restrictions in Florida and the USA have imposed limitations on large gatherings and travelling. There are also companyimposed travel restrictions on employees affecting attendees and participating companies.

The international KBIS show will take place online during the second week in February and will offer interactive and immersive events. Registration will be free for all NKBA members.

The NKBA released a statement on its website saying: “The cancellation of the live event is due to continuing developments related to the Covid-19 pandemic, including current government restrictions and

limitations on large gatherings imposed by states and other local government and public health authorities; the inability of KBIS’s international community to travel to the show due to quarantine requirements and travel bans; and the various company-imposed travel restrictions on employees affecting attendees and participating companies.

AMA PRAISES BATHROOM MANUFACTURERS’

“Despite cancelling our inperson February 2021 show, we are committed to keeping us all connected. As part of this commitment, we will be launching a virtual show and events platform during the second week of February that will offer interactive and immersive experiences for both exhibitors and attendees from wherever they are in the world.”

‘TEAM SPIRIT’ AS SALES RESILIENT DURING PANDEMIC

The latest report from AMA Research said the bathroom products market remained resilient during the coronavirus pandemic thanks to the industry’s ‘team spirit’ and the “diversity of its distribution channels”.

This diversity, it added, enabled bathroom manufacturers to “maximise both domestic and commercial opportunities and focus on the more beneficial route as demand requires”.

The report (Bathroom Market Report – UK 2020-2024) also said that the future of manufacturing companies will be driven not just by their products, but how they are perceived by the public in their response to the Covid-19 crisis.

This, said AMA Research, was built on core products well suited to the supply-andbuild and healthcare sectors, meaning they were able to secure contracts directly with key developers, helping the NHS cope with the increasing pressure from the volume of Covid-19 patients by providing ventilation equipment and PPE, as well as special pipe for emergency medical use in high-profile projects such

as the Royal Marsden and the Nightingale hospitals.

The industry also provided plumbing and drainage products for urgent repair and maintenance work, including at RAF and Royal Navy facilities. Some companies, said AMA Research, even donated their own PPE stock where they had surpluses, as well as supporting the community through local charity donations.

AMA Research said that with the requirements for social distancing and safety in the workplace for both the bathroom and construction industries, it was unlikely there would be a return to ‘normality’ until late 2021, if there is one at all.

Report Editor Michelle Turner praised “the sense of camaraderie and team spirit that has resonated throughout the

bathroom industry”.

She added that “as a result of Covid-19, allies and competitors alike have been working together to protect their businesses, their industry and their economy overall, showing the resilience and importance of some of the products within the UK bathroom market today”.

She concluded: “Companies can feel proud that they are truly adaptable in the face of adversity. It can be seen very clearly within this market and this is what will help protect the market and its companies going forward.”

The report anticipated that the value of the UK bathroom market would recover, albeit at a slow to moderate pace in the short term.

It also suggested that market value would be influenced not only by the cumulative effects of Covid-19, but also current and further expected currency fluctuations as a result of Brexit proceedings from the start of 2021.

AMA Research said it expected stronger market performance towards the end of 2024.

"CHALLENGES AHEAD FOR RETAILERS BUT DEMAND WILL REMAIN STRONG"

Some retailers may be forced to consider how much retail space they need as consumer habits change, but demand will remain strong, according to Neil Clark, Managing Director of Franke UK.

As many KBB designers are working from home and offering a new virtual service, many retailers may evaluate their space and decide to close studios, Clark believes. However, he also says that the physical retail experience cannot be replaced.

Clark said: “While nothing replaces the bricks-and-mortar experience, I do think many retailers will be evaluating how much retail space they really need if they can sell and operate differently. My view is that inevitably there will be fewer studios, but not fewer people in the market, just more of doing things differently.”

The Franke MD has commended showrooms and retailers for adapting to these changing times so quickly and using their creativity to engage with customers. Design consultations and presentations are now frequently done via videoconference, which both designers and customers have adapted to.

Clark said: “Covid is causing everyone to do things differently. Not least kitchen retailers, who are stepping up to the plate and adapting in impressive ways.

They are being more creative in how to get their message across, using technology platforms for design and presentation, while enhancing social media, website and marketing activity.”

Sales have been recovering after sales fell off for six months between March and September. Franke UK reports that studio business has come back strongly, but the house-builder market has not bounced back so well.

“Six months ago, sales fell off a cliff for everyone, but they are now recovering,” said Clark.

“Across the Franke group, I have been monitoring other countries in Europe who were ahead of us to lock down and then open up again and our markets in Italy, Germany and France have come back really strongly. I am very encouraged by this picture and while we sold very little for a couple of months here in the UK, demand is still there and the overall balance for this year is looking quite positive.”

THREE NEW WREN STORES BRING TOTAL TO 99

Kitchen retailer Wren has opened two more stores, with a third scheduled for later this week.

The new stores have opened in Mansfield and Altrincham, with Oldham coming on stream on Friday, October 9

The new Mansfield store opened its doors on Friday, September 18 was the chain’s 97th. It has 64 kitchen displays and created 18 jobs locally. City Mayor Andy Abrahams was there to cut the ribbon (main pic) and was presented with a £500 donation towards his 500 Fund, which helps local community projects.

Cllr Abrahams said: “I am delighted that Wren Kitchens has come to Mansfield – I am confident they will be a success. This is a very exciting time to be locating here with £50 million being invested in the town centre and with the council and many developers building homes all around the district.”

The store has a dedicated design studio using its own dual-screen 3D design software, as well as a dedicated VR studio where customers can experience their new kitchen using virtual reality, allowing them to walk around inside it and open doors and drawers.

Mansfield Showroom Manager Andrew Hallam has 25 years’ experience as a retail manager. He said: “We’re proud to be bringing the Wren brand to the Mansfield community as the nearest showrooms are some distance away in Nottingham and Derby.”

Altrincham is Wren’s 98th store and has 57 displays, creating 20 jobs. The 15,000sq ft store has two VR screens and a design studio for local architects and designers to use.

Altrincham Showroom Manager Alan Evans has 20 years’ experience as a retail manager. He said: “We’re proud to be launching our state-of-theart showroom in the heart of Altrincham, and no matter where people are with their kitchen renovation project, we’re confident we can support them with expert advice, as well as inspire them with design tips to help create their dream kitchen.”

The Oldham store, its 99th, will open later this week and the chain’s 100th store is scheduled to open next month in Greenwich.

Wren kitchens employs around 5,500 people across all of its sites and is a family-run business.

MOORES PARTNERS WITH SUPPLY CHAIN SUSTAINABILITY SCHOOL

Moores Furniture Group Ltd has partnered with the Supply Chain Sustainability School to demonstrate how the ‘Kaizen’ methodology can be used to minimise both the company’s and their customers’ carbon footprint whilst also demonstrating environmental responsibility.

Moores adopted the ‘Kaizen’ method, which is an approach used to analyse current ways of working and create continuous improvement based on the idea that small, ongoing positive changes can reap significant improvements. The Kaizen event focussed on analysing ‘touch points’ from the painted fascias leaving Moores’ Spray Shop through to the assembly and distribution processes. It identified that the process designed to apply a polythene sleeve to door and drawer fascias using an ‘L’ Sealer

was causing potential damage to the fascia through catching them on the sealer’s infeed mechanism. Through further analysis it was also realised that there is no significant benefit from the application of the polythene sleeve, as the product is adequately protected against abrasion by an initial protective film already applied to the fascia.

Eliminating this process removed unnecessary production equipment and polythene packaging, resulting in the removal of circa 20 tonnes of single use polythene per annum, complete with the associated environmental impacts for raw materials, manufacture, distribution and recycling operations for both Moores and its customers.

HI-MACS® EMBRACES THE TERRAZZO TREND WITH TWO NEW COLOURS

When it comes to surface design trends, there’s one look that’s had a huge impact on both residential and commercial interiors alike. Terrazzo, is an immensely popular floor and wall treatment that has really become popular, from floor styles, tabletops, bathroom basins and kitchens to even phone cases and stationery, the Terrazzo trend is everywhere and is subsequently, a look with longevity.

HI-MACS® is delighted to announce the launch of two stunning new colours in a new Terrazzo finish – Terrazzo Classico and Terrazzo Grigio. Taking the trend and developing it for application in any interior, HIMACS® Terrazzo can be used for residential, commercial and public projects of any size or style..

The origins of Terrazzo as we know it today reach back to 18th Century Venetian pavements and flooring but it wasn’t until the

1920s that the look really took off. The graphic design, renowned for its speckled, dotted, asymmetrical, imperfect random pattern contrast has evolved over the years to become the abstract illustrative print we know and love today.

Terrazzo goes with just about anything and the new HI-MACS® Terrazzo colours demonstrate this beautifully with the neutral tones of Terrazzo Classico and the industrial feel of Terrazzo Grigio.

HI-MACS® works for virtually any interior application. Be it wall-coverings, countertops, shower areas, bathroom basins, kitchen countertops or island units in residential environments. Made from a mix of minerals, pure acrylic and natural pigments, this solid surface material is hardwearing, resilient, seamless, hygienic and stain resistant and it can be thermoformed into curves, ideal for seamless wet room applications, kitchen islands and

professional projects. Numerous international certificates award HI-MACS® top marks for its hygienic performance, high indoor air quality and the fact that it is emission-free and nanoparticles-free. Resistant to dirt, bacteria and harsh chemicals, this smooth, nonporous material leaves nowhere for germs to hide, offering peace of mind for healthy homes and public spaces.

Launched in September 2020, HI-MACS® Terrazzo in Classico and Grigio expands the HIMACS® solid surface portfolio to embrace this popular design trend, enabling homeowners, designers, architects, builders and specifiers to bring this latest look to surfaces and wall treatments. HI-MACS® Terrazzo Combines aesthetic appeal with hygienic, hardwearing qualities.

“THE CREATION OF NEW DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS IS FUNDAMENTAL“

As social distancing rules remain in place and the industry continues to adapt to the ‘new normal‘, Gira has identified a rapid growth for future-proof lighting design, which is intelligent and self-serving.

Accordingly, Gira has enjoyed progressive dialogue with specialist lighting distributor, Intalite UK, a specialist in decorative & technical lighting, and discovered that the two businesses share the same philosophy in that a greater product offering and the creation of new distribution channels is fundamental to business-success. This has subsequently led to a collaboration between the two businesses.

John Keenan, Managing Director, Intalite UK says “COVID-19 has definitely impacted our business, but we have remained available remotely and communicated with our customers by phone and on email and we are now beginning to see a steady rise in sales and quotations. Now more than ever, we need to ensure we’re able to quickly respond to new areas of desirability and apply

new preventative measures and product differentiators.“

Mark Booth, Managing Director at Gira UK says “To be able to come together and share ideas, technical expertise and products with fellow brands and businesses is a great way to stay reactive and commercial. Following the nationwide lockdown measures and inevitable lag in retail recovery, the general consensus from the industry (and country) is that ‘together we are stronger‘. It’s extremely hard to not see the virtues of this philosophy in times of crisis, which is why we must pool our resources and consider all routes to market for a more united, sustainable future.“

John continues “We are really excited to begin talks with Gira and discuss how smart home technology is becoming a driving force behind contemporary lighting design. We are keen to grow our product portfolio so that we can supply our trade customers with everything they need to stay competitive and current, as more consumers begin to realise how intelligent design is making a huge

difference to the functionality of a home. Gira offers the lighting industry an ability to break into new, untapped markets where intelligent building design has become a driving force. I am confident this is an area of the business we want to explore and grow: especially as 99% of the brands we supply are compatible with the Gira eNet SMART HOME product range.“

SUPPORTING KBB INSTALLERS

THROUGH THE INDUSTRY’S MOST CHALLENGING ERA

The last six months has been a time of reflection, adaptation and flexibility. As we all navigate new ways of working within social distancing and fresh health and safety rules, many businesses are coping with all kinds of increased pressures, from getting new business in and being able to complete projects, to having fewer team members and trying to adapt to the ever-changing legislation and guidelines.

We know there’s been a lot of pressure when it comes to resourcing, business operations, and delivering projects on time for our customers. Though Häfele has, like you, experienced a huge amount of change in the ways we operate, our priority has been to help our customers during these challenging times and make it as easy as possible for them to continue to work.

38
Elizabeth Briggs, Category Manager Sliding, Room & Building, Häfele UK
Company Profile

To make sure we’re offering the best possible services and solutions, we’ve spoken to our customers throughout lockdown to understand the hurdles that stand in the way of continuity, and how we can make changes of our own to help you work effectively and safely. Essentially, we’ve prioritised helping you achieve a new level of normal.

The pandemic may have impacted a lot of things about our personal and professional lives, but one thing always remains; whether you’re looking for technical, specification or design support, we’re here as an extension of your team. So, to help you secure new projects and continue growing your business during this new era, we’ve brought together some of our services and products to help you in these challenging times.

Häfele Here to Help

Whether you need to refine project plans so that they meet a customer’s changing budgets or find ways to improve the overall design and aesthetic of a project to maximise customer satisfaction, we’re here to help you.

We recently launched Häfele Here to Help, a dedicated package of support for our industry. Designed and delivered in response to feedback from customers who shared their Covid-19-related industry concerns with us, the programme will help installers, joiners and manufacturers to increase sales and enquiries, as well as deliver projects on time and on budget despite the financial, operational and logistical challenges presented by the pandemic.

39
Company Profile
The pandemic may have impacted a lot of things about our personal and professional lives, but one thing always remains; whether you’re looking for technical, specification or design support, we’re here as an extension of your team.

To help customers who require extra support to plan future projects with confidence, the package includes a price freeze on all products for the rest of 2020. Additionally, it brings together a number of existing, value added services to make the design, specification and ordering process as easy as possible. This includes our free-of-charge Lighting Design Service, which allows users to see different options on how integrated LED lighting can transform furniture, units and other products. It also incorporates Häfele to Order, a bespoke, made-to-order manufacturing service that allows customers to order personalised packed and, in the case of lighting, assembled and tested products for their project, saving time and improving efficiencies when installing and fitting products.

Sliding door gear: technical specification support

The pandemic has made it more important than ever for homes to be multifunctional, with our properties now being used for everything from working and learning, to exercising and relaxing. Homeowners are looking at the changes they can make to facilitate this new level of flexibility and as a result, we’re seeing increased demand for sliding door gear.

When not in use, sliding doors allow families to create larger, open plan areas for socialising, but can later be closed as a way to break up a space and create smaller, more private areas, such as home offices.

Every sliding door system is made up of a track, rollers and guide, but there are several technical elements to consider to ensure you get the right hardware, materials and specification to suit your customer’s project. To support this and make the ordering of sliding door systems as easy as possible, we’ve launched a new technical support service.

Starting off with the dimensions of the open space you want to fill, you can then use our sliding door calculator to determine the size and weight of door you need to install. From here, give our Technical Team a call. Using both those calculations, they will specify the best system for the application, will help you decide what material would be best suited to the system and discuss options such as whether the door could be motorised. Then, you could also use Häfele to Order to deliver the door’s associated components, such as the track and rollers, cut to exact measurements.

In one quick phone call, you’ll be able to order from a huge range of the most popular

sliding door systems available to the exact specification required for your customer, and with the addition of Häfele to Order it’ll reach you as a single, pre-assembled set.

Free Space Flap

We know that our customers are always on the lookout for fixtures and fittings which give more options when it comes to the style and functionality of furniture, so we’ve launched a flap fitting with that in mind.

The Free space flap fitting promises to set a new standard in furniture design, planning, and production. It creates more storage room within cabinetry, by eliminating the need for large cover caps, and has an internal installation depth of only 63mm. It’s installed using a single pre-mounted conventional screw connection on the side walls, which will make the building of cabinetry a much more efficient and speedy process.

Free space has a pin system, which requires only one fixing screw to lock the flap in place. Its spring force can be adjusted for a multi-position stop function and it has an integrated soft closing mechanism to ensure gentle and quiet closing of the flap. The opening angle can be set and limited to 90° with a tool-free, integrated adjustment option, which allows the cabinet to be installed at an elevated height without risk of the door hitting the ceiling.

The Free space is available in five model versions which have a load bearing capacity between 1.2kg up to 10.7kg, and comes in white, light grey and anthracite as standard, and black as part of a special order product. It can also be matched to any cabinet colour to create a seamless finish.

This is the first time Free space has been made available in the UK and will inspire installers to start thinking differently about hinge work.

As an agile manufacturer, we’ve used the pandemic as an opportunity to look at which services and products would most benefit our customers to help them get back to what they do best. ENSURE YOU ARE PROTECTED IN THESE TOUGH TIMES

In the autumn issue of The Installer magazine, insurance expert Christopher Bates of strategic BiKBBI partner UIB Insurance, gives his advice on how to choose a business insurance policy …

2020 has thrown just about everything it could at us and as we reach autumn and approach the year end, it’s almost impossible to predict what 2021 will bring. We all hope it will improve greatly but sadly, uncertainty prevails.

It has to improve surely! But what if it doesn’t? What if it’s more of the same or worse? Its therefore never a more important time for small businesses, especially small ones like KBB installers to protect themselves from what the future may bring.

Which brings me to insurance, when did you last look at your policy and check if your cover will suffice in these difficult times?

Insurance is a serious business and should be regarded as a fundamental part of protecting your company, covering you against a variety of risks ranging from accidental damage to angry customers. Importantly, installers need to understand that some insurance cover is required by law whereas some come as an optional safeguard against threats to you or your business and are designed to give you peace of mind whilst you go about your everyday business.

Understanding what you need and defining which is which policy, and where to find the right ones for you, is part and parcel of choosing the best small business insurance policy for you.

Legal essentials

Employers’ liability insurance is generally required by law for everyone with employees in the UK. It covers you against claims for compensation if an employee is injured or becomes ill as a result of negligence in the workplace. When deciding on a policy, do consider:

• The amount covered. Most policies provide cover for £10 million as standard.

• The assistance offered. Some policies include access to legal advice in some circumstances.

• The extras. Certain policies can cover temporary employees, for example.

Protecting property

Buildings insurance will often cover damage to property that you own, but if you’re in an office or retail unit, you could look for specialist office or shop insurance cover. These specialist products protect against things like damage to your computers, stock etc.

Almost all KBB installer businesses rely on a van. A dedicated business vehicle policy could help you stay on the road in the event of things like breakdown, damage and theft, for example, something we’ve covered in this magazine a lot recently

Covering your back

Any public-facing business should also consider the risk of injuring or badly advising their clients. There are two key protections against this:

• Public liability insurance, which covers your legal costs and business losses resulting from accidents that happen to anyone at your premises or as a result of negligence in your work environment.

• Professional indemnity is designed for advisers and professionals. It protects you if your client feels they have suffered financial losses because of negligence or mistakes in your advice or services.

Covering your concerns

You can tailor most policies to include the things that are relevant to your business, but sometimes you’ll need to buy separate insurance. For example, you may need to insure company smartphones against theft or damage, or plan for separate healthcare cover if illness and absenteeism are a worry.

Ultimately, it comes down to the protections that are right for your own business. If you know what you need, a clear search can yield the perfect policy.

If assistance is needed, it may be best to contact an insurance broker and get a ‘business health check’. UIB Is the only insurance broker recommended by the BiKBBI and can be contacted via www.uibdirect.co.uk

The Installer Magazine wanted to get to know new BiKKBI sponsors BA a little better and so we asked the company’s Key Accounts Manager, Anthony McMorrow, a few questions to enlighten us.

Hi Anthony, tell us about your role and your key stakeholders?

As National Key Accounts Manager I’ve been covering this position for two years now and I love the challenge and variety that the role presents. I have a fantastic customer base dealing with a range of key stakeholders in the builders' merchant sector.

How has COVID-19 affected your customer base?

It’s been a very challenging time for businesses generally but we are all learning to adapt our business models to support the buying behaviour of our key stakeholders. For example,

we have noticed a huge shift towards online sales and we have had to adapt to help our customers meet the change. As a company we continue to listen to and support our customers so they can deliver the promises they are making to their own customers.

What is Kitchen Kit?

Kitchen Kit is a new and exciting trade offer, from an installer’s perspective it is easy to choose, easy to buy and easy to build. We’ve done our research and taken time to understand what both merchants and installers need from this type of product. We have taken the hard work out of buying a trade kitchen by

pre-selecting the range of best sellers, including all components on one sku and offering a quick build cabinet solution with as little as a 30 second build-time!

Have you noticed any change in demand between contemporary and more traditional style kitchens?

Certainly J-Pull and slab kitchens continue to be on-trend but there will always be a market for the more traditional shaker style kitchen.

What are the benefits to merchants?

User-friendliness! Quite simply, Kitchen Kit provides the merchant with a product that’s on-trend, easy to stock and easy to sell. We have experts monitoring trends so the work is already done for the merchant as it takes any risk away.

The best selling skus can be stocked in store but the

majority of the range is available on either 48-hour flat-pack despatch, or 10-day for rigid, so merchants don’t need to worry about clearing out stock if and when trends move on. Kitchen Kit is trade kitchens made easy and we have created a wealth of marketing material to help merchants sell Kitchen Kit. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service and high quality products keeping the merchants customers very

happy. This UK manufactured product delivers on all levels as well as being very competitively priced.

Why should an installer buy this product?

We have taken time to develop this product and as well as offering a quality UK manufactured product with on-trend style and colours, we’ve made Kitchen Kit easy

to build and fit. The ordering process is simple and Kitchen Kit is available off the shelf or on demand. Fitting a kitchen has never been easier, every part of the furniture has been made to be easy to fit, for example the 30 seconds to build-time is a real game changer as we know that time is money for installers. In addition, we have created marketing collateral for the installers to help them sell on to their end consumers.

Finally, the million dollar question! What challenges do you see ahead for the industry?

It’s very difficult to know what the future holds but this is a resilient industry and as long as we work together and adapt as an industry we can stay strong. I also believe that Kitchen Kit is available at just the right time as it will help merchants and installers meet new challenges head on.

48 600mm WIDE PANELS OFFER EASE OF INSTALLATION Showerwall 600 x 2400mm HPL bathroom wall panels in Positano Blue Terrazzo Bathrooms

Steph Harris, Product Manager at Showerwall outlines why the company’s 600mm wide panel offers versatility for bathrooms and cloakrooms

“Decorative waterproof wall panelling is now widely accepted as a fast installation, hygienic and easy clean alternative to tiles in bathrooms, ensuites and cloakrooms.

Our Showerwall range offers three widths - 600mm, 900mm and 1200mm and all panels are 2440mm high so can go straight up to the ceiling for a neat finish. These sizes offer a lot of flexibility for different applications around baths, showers, basins and as feature walls and the sizes can be mixed to suit the job.

The narrower 600 x 2440mm panel however is a good one for installers to be aware of as its particularly suitable for certain types of jobs and compact spaces.

The 600mm wide board is an easy size to transport, cut and handle. The panels are lightweight to lift and carry and so can easily be manoeuvred up and round stairs or into restricted spaces – and still create stylish, waterproof areas that are easy to clean and maintain.

Beautiful baths

Baths are commonly 600mm wide x 1200m long. The 600mm wide panels are perfect for fitting around baths as one panel will fit conveniently behind the taps, while a run of two 600mm panels will sit neatly along the long edge.

For jobs where there is a shower over the bath, the shower screen fixings can sit neatly at the outside edge of the 600mm wide panel.

Compact cloakrooms

Lockdown has refocused consumers’ priorities when it comes to home renovations and hygiene has understandably moved up the list of priorities for many. There’s been a rise in people looking to add a downstairs cloakroom so that guests have a contained place to use, and to create a separate place for handwashing.

Cloakrooms by their very nature are compact spaces, sometimes squeezed under the stairs, and

in these situations the 600mm panels are an easier size to work with. They minimise cutting and wastage and are very easy to install behind basins and toilets giving the homeowner a stylish surface that is durable and easy to clean.

Small shower rooms

Many people are now also looking to add extra showering capability to their homes, often by carving space off a bedroom to create a bijou en-suite. Showerwall’s smaller panels are the perfect solution when working around a 600 x 600mm shower tray as the panels can be simply lifted in and sealed in place, with no need for measuring and cutting beforehand.

Showerwall panels are also ideal for creating large walk in or level access showers to support multigenerational living as they can be fixed floor to ceiling and sealed at the base with the Sureseal four-point system.

The 600mm, 900mm and 1200mm panels are all available in 46 high pressure laminate decors ranging from fashionable terrazzos to luxury marbles and earthy stones to shimmering quartz.

The panels are manufactured from a moisture resistant MDF core and finished in high pressure laminate giving a 10.5mm thickness. They can be installed with Proclick installation using click design technology to lock the panels together without the need for joining trims - offering plenty of design and installation scope for installers when meeting a range of consumer needs.

A major benefit for installers is that wallpanelling can be fitted in less than a day using simple joinery tools, either by fixing them to a wall or over existing tiles. Compared to tiling it is far easier and less time consuming and extends your skills to offer a full turn-key solution to the homeowner and earn more money.

Showerwall is backed by a guarantee of up to 15-years and is available ex-stock nationwide from IDS, Ideal Bathrooms and Formula 1.

BUSHBOARD INVESTS IN DIGITAL & TRAINING SUPPORT FOR INSTALLERS

As one of the major suppliers of laminate surfaces in the kitchens and bathrooms market, Bushboard has always determined a large degree of its success to the value it places on fostering strong relationships with its installer partners and community.

many installers who are treading the boards alone and value easily accessible and tangible support.

Working in partnership with BiKBBI, the new free online training course will be delivered by product specialists in the Bushboard team and will guide installers through best practice for fitting its Evolve compact laminate work surfaces.

In these turbulent times, installers need to have the trust and reassurance in the brands they work with and the opportunity to hone their skills when it comes to understanding and fitting the product. An unsatisfactory experience for a consumer can have negative repercussions for both manufacturer and installer so it is essential that manufacturers offer initiatives, resources and support to their installer partners to help ensure the livelihood of their businesses are protected at these most crucial of times.

At a time when face-to-face support is minimal, the importance of a digital support network for installers has never been more crucial. Bushboard has created The Installer Network, a digital resource centre dedicated to supporting its installer partners with the latest information on products and training opportunities.

Hosting easily accessible installation guides, refresher product videos and direct contact support with a technical product expert when needed, networks like this provide a much-needed branch of support, which is so often amiss in the industry yet so important for

Additionally, Bushboard has also taken further steps in ramping up its efforts to support installers with a brand-new e-learning module, a worktop-specific CPD course for installers. Working in partnership with BiKBBI, the new free online training course will be delivered by product specialists in the Bushboard team and will guide installers through best practice for fitting its Evolve compact laminate work surfaces.

The Evolve range comprises an ultra-slim 12.5mm thickness and its range of 15 bold designs against a backdrop choice of five principal solid core colours enables installers to provide a cutting-edge design statement in their customer’s kitchens. The new module will also highlight how installers can use the Evolve range to streamline the fitting process, with shaping on-site made possible thanks to their solid coloured core and ease of cut.

Bushboard also has a Business Support Team, which features dedicated resource to it's installer community. To support the new Installer Network, this area will be a key touch point for installers, answering technical questions, providing help with training, understanding the needs of the installer and helping develop and encourage installers to use our products, including getting key marketing material into their hands to help their customers make their choice.

Franke’s Minerva 4-in-1 Electronic tap in Industrial Black Brassware

HYGIENIC MINERVA 4-IN-1 ELECTRONIC

TAP REDUCES HAND CONTACT

Current events mean that there is now a huge emphasis for good hygiene in the home and Franke’s newly extended Minerva 4-in-1 Electronic Instant Boiling Water tap range ticks all the boxes whilst reflecting the trend for colour in the kitchen with three new industrial design finishes of Industrial Black, Gold and Copper

The Minerva 4-in-1 Electronic tap has long been a popular model in Franke’s portfolio thanks to its hands-free functionality. Now, with consumers increasingly looking at ways to reduce germ transmission and optimise hygiene in the home, an electronically operated tap is a very good option to recommend for installation.

LESS HAND CONTACT

The Minerva 4-in-1 Electronic tap is digitally operated and reduces hand contact, while also offering a raft of other practical benefits

for the kitchen. One of these is that an instant boiling water tap dispenses 100°C water which is ideal for sterilising items.

The tap features pre-set touchcontrols which can be activated by a single twist and two taps of the dial for 30 seconds of 100°C filtered boiling or 15 seconds of filtered cold and three taps for 60 seconds of 100°C filtered boiling or 30 seconds of filtered cold water from the 5 litre tank. Once activated you can stand back and watch while it fills pans, teapots, cafetières and jugs. The 4-in-1 design also gives users to access to standard mains hot and cold water from a separate lever.

MORE DESIGN SCOPE

The three new industrial colours of Industrial Black, Gold and Copper are now available across Minerva’s Mondial L-Spout and the new Helix J-Spout tap models, in addition to stainless steel, to offer design flexibility

across a range of kitchen styles. The Minerva Original model is available in chrome for those who prefer a classic finish.

The Minerva Mondial and Helix are made from solid stainless steel and feature a coloured PVD coating that is designed to keep the structure of the stainless steel visible.

The expansion of the range has opened up the scope for installers when recommending products to clients that look great, are high performance and which are easy to maintain.

DON’T FIT AND FORGET

Any installer will know just how easy the Minerva tap range is to install thanks to the innovative M-Box system.

The box contains no single parts, just one compact box containing Franke Pro M filter, inlet combination, mixing valve set, gasket set and control box

and offers the flexibility to be fitted horizontally or vertically, with just two drill holes and few tools required.

What’s more, the integral Pro M filter is designed so that it can be easily removed and replaced by the customer. Replacing the water filter is an important part of the ongoing maintenance of an instant boiling water tap. It reduces limescale build up in the tank and also improves the quality of the dispensed water too. This is a point worth pointing out to consumers once you have installed the tap as it ensures the proper working of the tap ongoing.

Jeanette Ward, communications manager at Franke UK comments: “Like all instant boiling water taps, the Minerva Electronic requires a little maintenance from time to time, just as you would with other appliances in the home, to keep them running like new. We are all used to adding salt and rinse aid to the dishwasher and with a hot tap you need to change the cartridge, wash the plastic casing and de-scale the tap sieve. This takes no more than half an hour and should be done every six months. Although we cover this in our technical guide and on our website, simple care and maintenance is something that installers could also highlight to customers more so they understand, for example, the importance of changing the cartridge to prevent limescale build up in the boiler, while also improving water taste. While ongoing maintenance may not necessarily be the responsibility of the installer it may save them a return visit and could make for a more satisfied customer in the long-term.”

PLAN YOUR WORK AND WORK YOUR PLAN

Our intrepid KBB inspector, Richard Renouf, ventures to the coast and discusses the necessity of planning and how sometimes solutions are hiding in plain sight.

Boats in gardens make me curious. When they’re at the front of a house on a trailer they seem to be at the ready for an impromptu trip to the seaside or river. But when they’re big enough to need a crane, wedged up on blocks, and clearly have not had any care or maintenance for years, I wonder why they’re there at all, unless they’re simply monuments to good intentions.

I set up a cross-line laser on a tripod and was amazed that the installer had managed to get the worktops level throughout

Today’s customer had a huge boat in the garden of his cottage, two streets away from the marina. It wouldn’t fit through his side gate – if it had been mobile. But it wasn’t seaworthy, so that issue wasn’t going to trouble him for some time.

He had greeted me at the front door, and as we walked through several rooms he regaled me with the story of his ‘recycled’ cottage. It had been built in 1861 using beams from a Belgian barn and arched windows from the Netherlands, all imported via the local port, he surmised. Floorboards ran in different directions and the bricks changed every few courses when you looked from the inside, although the outside was rendered so it had an acceptable façade.

He pointed to the kitchen doorway and I had to take a second look. The plinths were deeper on the right hand side and whilst the worktops appeared to be horizontal, the floor dropped away significantly. I entered the room and turned to the left to face the sink. Again, the floor was falling away to the left hand side.

I took out my laser floor scanner which is the quickest way to check the flatness and level of a floor and found a fall of 32 mm over the 6-metre length. The units at the lower end of the room were hovering above floor level. The feet were extended to their maximum height and the plinths had visible packers underneath.

I set up a cross-line laser on a tripod and was amazed that the installer had managed to get the worktops level throughout, but it was pretty clear the marking out had started at the top end of the room and the height had not been checked in several places before the units were fixed into position.

‘I was worried about a flood from the washing machine or dishwasher,’ said the customer. ‘I figured if I put a fall in the screed the water would all flow down and out of the door. I built this extension myself, you know.’

We discussed solutions before we considered who should pay. His partner wouldn’t agree to have the worktops lowered as they would, she felt, end up too low. But he had some wood which he could use to make new plinths – in a contrasting colour and perhaps create a ‘skirt’ around the gaps under the end panels.

I showed him the tall end panels that he had purchased for the tall housings. ‘Why not get some more of these and cut them down to make end panels the right size for the raised units and also to make matching plinths?’ I said.

It was a lightbulb moment for him. ‘I hadn’t thought of that,’ he said. It was certainly a more pleasing option and the actual cost of the materials needed was a fraction of some of the other options he had been thinking of pursuing. It was likely a compromise could be reached with the retailer, who planned the job, and the installer, both of whom didn’t check the basics and act professionally.

The moral of the story? Plan ahead. But remember, even when things go wrong the solution may not be as drastic as you fear.

Clean air with the system. We conquer dust together.

SAND EVERY EDGE EASILY

KBB installers and other tradespeople are all too familiar with the scenario of laborious, time-consuming sanding using a sanding block, sanding through edges and resurfacing edges. A thankless task and hardly profitable. Every edge is different: it can be sawn, routed and is sometimes untreated or painted. To sand edges as easily and effectively as possible, Festool has launched a versatile mobile edge sander.

"Our new edge sander eliminates the need to manual edge sand. Many people use a hand-sanding block to sand edges and although this is cheap, it is time-consuming which costs money, it also produces a lot of dust and is prone to flaws," explains product manager Simon Gröger at Festool.

"Until now many have used an eccentric sander, belt sander or orbital sander. However, this requires skill and expertise, as more aggressive machine sanding can cause the edge to be sanded through or rounded when tipping over. And this usually requires many finishing steps, such as repeated priming or filling," added Simon Gröger.

62 Tools, Power Tools & Equipment Advice
Festool launches its new ES-ETS 125/ES-ETSC 125 edge sander

The solution: A mobile edge sander for all edges

Festool’s new edge sander is ideal for sanding solid wood as well as for intermediate sanding of paint and filler, for all edge finishing work and for trimming edges with any materials or coating.

"We developed the new edge sander so that even from the first application, there is no more tipping over on the edge or sanding through. Compared to edge sanding with a hand-sanding block, time savings of up to 50% can be achieved. Simply open the new Systainer³, take out the edge sander, position it on the edge and get started – quickly, effectively and faultlessly," explains product manager Gröger. The edge sander makes it possible to sand every type of edge, no matter what it looks like: Whether the edge is straight or curved, untreated or painted, perpendicular or at an angle (from 43° to 92°), whether the workpiece is small, large or bulky, narrow or wide (from 5 to 60 mm) – with the new edge sander, all edges can be sanded perfectly. Even external curves on the outline, e.g. on a round dining table, through to inner corners are possible.

The angle adjustment also makes the new edge sander incredibly versatile. This feature enables even free angles to be copied and locked without tools. For the utmost precision, there is an angle display which can be calibrated. Gröger explains, "We have designed the new edge sander with two different sanding settings: In Hard mode, in other words in the setting for pre- sanding, the edge is sanded according to the set angle. In Soft mode – in other words in the setting for intermediate sanding, the edge sander adapts precisely to the surface to be sanded,"

Dust-free sanding: Good for the surface and your lungs

For many years now, Festool has been focusing on protecting users' health with each new product developed. Against this background, virtually dust- free sanding is of course also possible with the new edge sander: Either using integral dust extraction with a dust bag or in conjunction with a mobile dust extractor.

Provided you have an appropriate vehicle, are insured and licensed to move waste, and time to do it yourself, then this option is the most flexible. But, beware of minimum charges at the tip. Many charge 1 tonne minimum regardless of weight. If you take it back to your yard, then if possible, have different skips to split the material into more recyclable and therefore cheaper waste streams. But, beware of the regulatory constraints and remember burning waste is not allowed.

3. LEAVE FOR CUSTOMER

Often makes sense if customer having other works at the same time, so getting it all removed in one go is cheaper. Equally, some customers just like being in control. Those sorts of customers should be encouraged to look after the waste disposal, because whatever you do – they’re almost bound to question whether it was the best option!

KEEPING THE PRICE DOWN

Using a professional leaves you more time to focus on what you’re being paid for, keeps your vehicle clean, and ensures you have the appropriate paperwork.

If you use a man & van then, other than shopping around (check out LoveJunk for this), good ways to keep cost down are:

• Break down the waste – even though the weight will be the same, waste contractors only have fixed space in their vehicle. So, if your waste takes up less space, that leaves them with more space to pick up other junk before going to the tip

• Bag loose waste – putting messy waste into bags makes it easier for contractors to clear. Less time on site means more time for other collections

• Place it close to the road – reduces loading time

• Anything the customer will take in their own bin? – particularly with small jobs, many customers are often fine with you leaving waste nicely bagged for collection by the council

• Leave appliances for council or scrap man.

'SMARTENING' UP A PERIOD PROPERTY

The Project:

Ben and Vanessa Anders’ five-bed Victorian semi-detached home in Dulwich had not undergone any significant maintenance for 45 years. The couple decided upon a major refurbishment of the south London property that included extending the rear to accommodate a new open plan kitchen, as well as restoring many of the property’s original features in a traditional style, while ensuring it was functional for them and their young family.

The Brief:

With both Ben and Vanessa having a background in interiors, they had a strong sense of the style and design features they were aiming to achieve. The extended kitchen was set to be the focal point of the home with a deVOL Classic English Kitchen with Bella Antique Brass cup handles that complement the brass fixtures, including taps and light fittings. The kitchen was further enhanced by its Arabescato Marble worktops, famous for its dramatic black veining, The couple worked with Farrow & Ball to create a perfect colour palette throughout the home, the kitchen units were finished in ‘Off-Black’ with the wall cladding balancing the dark tones in ‘School House White.’

For the wiring accessories, a traditional low-tech solution was more in character in terms of style, but the functionality needed to support all the requirements of a modern family. They approached Hamilton at international interior design show Decorex to see if the British familyrun company could assist with products that gave them both the look and functionality they were after.

It’s always a pleasure to see a project turn out as beautifully as this, and to receive such positive client feedback. The Hamilton team is always pleased to get involved early in a project’s design stages to advise and support on solutions that are befitting of a new scheme.”

Hamilton’s wiring accessories add traditional finishing touch with modern functionality to Victorian renovation
69 Smart Home - Case Study

The Solution:

The Anders wanted a brass finish to be sympathetic with the kitchen and theme of the property’s design scheme, but they had to remain within budget and so Hamilton Hartland in Antique Brass was ideal. The classic high-quality finish was exactly what they were looking for and it was priced competitively. The pair selected the more traditional plate style that features visible screws – better known as ‘box fix’ – as it complemented the period and style of the home rather than the more modern screwless option.

For functionality and flexibility, the home is predominantly fitted with 1, 2 and 3-gang rotary dimmer switches that allow the zonal lighting to be adjusted to the levels required by the family and their changing requirements. Meanwhile, at the entrance hall, 4-gang 2-way toggle switches are used due to their traditional style that is in-keeping with the period property and creates maximum visual impact as you enter.

For a modern family, the kitchen area is the hub of the home and it was important to facilitate smart phone recharging; accordingly, Hartland sockets with dual USB 2.4A charging capability were placed in specially selected areas of the kitchen area, such as the corner of the centre island, where people will often be seated.

In the other areas of the five-bed home, the Antique Brass finish works well with both the light and dark shades from the bespoke Farrow & Ball interior colour scheme. Hamilton’s range were selected in the garden too with Elemento exterior wiring accessories range with IP66 rating, which ensures the prevention of water and dust ingress, allow for safe and flexible outside functionality. Elemento double switched sockets were installed in the front and rear of the property and enable, for example, the easy use of festoon lighting on the rear terrace.

The Result:

The Anders family is thrilled with their finished home commenting, “We absolutely love the Hamilton products and how they integrate into the finished décor,” says Vanessa Anders. “We looked at so many brass options that were in-keeping with the traditional style, but found that the quality and finish of many were not of the standard that we wanted. It was not an easy task, especially as we had a strict budget to keep too. However, Hamilton gave us exactly what we were looking for.”

Gavin Williams, Hamilton’s Sales & Marketing Director, says: “It’s always a pleasure to see a project turn out as beautifully as this, and to receive such positive client feedback. The Hamilton team is always pleased to get involved early in a project’s design stages to advise and support on solutions that are befitting of a new scheme.”

WHAT DO WE WANT FROM A BATHROOM?

72 Bathrooms

Today, there are a number of factors effecting how we design a bathroom and how we meet a homeowner’s expectations.

As consumers, we are becoming far more aware of sustainability and water saving. There is a wider understanding about the damage we are having on our environment and the measures we can take to reduce that impact. Reducing water and energy consumption is an important concept for consumers and subsequently, a growing number of bathrooms now have dual-flush cisterns.

Space is an important consideration when it comes to designing a bathroom. The layout of homes is changing especially in built up areas where houses in new developments are getting smaller and require unique solutions. In some cases whilst our bathrooms may be becoming smaller our expectations of them are becoming larger. We want more than functionality, it also has to reflect our lifestyle, our tastes and offer us relaxation. So, we expect functionality, privacy and design - all from one, small space.

There are a variety of products on the market that will help optimise space and will even reduce installation time. The latest installation systems conceal the cistern behind the wall, offering an alternative to traditional ceramic cisterns and are ideal for saving space in the bathroom and preserving the integrity of the design scheme. Compact options are also available when space is at a premium as well as low height variations to help with concealed installations beneath windows. An illusion of space can also be achieved by using wallhung furniture and selecting

streamlined furniture in a material, finish and colour that gives the illusion of space will be effective for all the right reasons.

It’s not just space that can be issue, it’s also difficult layouts. A great solution for this type of problem is a WC with an integrated cistern. In this type of toilet, the cistern and flush plate do not need to be built into a wall, allowing for greater flexibility when planning a bathroom layout – it gives you the possibility to place a (wall hung) WC in tricky spots such as on a low partition wall or underneath a window frame. It also allows for easier installation and maintenance, again, as the cistern is not built into the wall.

We now expect technology to be incorporated into our homes. Whether that’s being able to turn the heating on so its warm when you get home or being able to

boil the kettle before you get up in the mornings. All areas of the home are rapidly changing due to the impact of technology and the bathroom is no different, with mirrors housing Wi-Fi connections, integrated sockets in furniture and in-built TV options. The bathroom can be a hub of smart technology and offers a great business opportunity to installers.

One of the latest trends to hit the UK market is for smart toilets. They are easy to use and incorporate intuitive controls with functions being controlled via a remote control. Smart toilets can also be extremely easy to install. For example, the Roca In-Wash Inspira has hidden fixings and requires only one inlet and a conventional power supply. In-Wash also features an integrated control panel with wash, dry and stop functions making it simple

use for homeowners. The water temperature, pressure, positing and dryer mode can all be set for individual users via the remote control. With its quick release soft close seat and self-cleaning nozzle, this toilet is easy to clean and hygienic giving homeowner’s peace of mind.

In summary, the bathroom needs to be functional whilst providing an environment to relax and unwind whilst reflecting the homeowners design styles. All of these elements combined can bring new business opportunities for installers and provide them with a chance to exceed their customer’s expectations.

COVID-19 GOVERNMENT SUPPORT -

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

I sincerely hope that all readers are well and are experiencing improvements in business activity.

BREXIT trade deals are starting to nudge in a little but COVID-19 remains the dominant feature on the economic landscape, therefore A COVID related update is perhaps still appropriate.

Job Retention Scheme (Furlough)

For those employers still having to furlough staff, the level of re-claim from HMR&C under the Job Retention Scheme fell to 60% of usual wages on the 1st October. There is a monthly cap of £1,875. The cap is proportionately adjusted if the employee has returned to work on a part time basis, so has a mixture of normal pay and furlough.

Employee’s national insurance and pension costs are now the responsibility of the employer. It is expected that furloughed workers will still receive 80% of their usual pay, with employers expected to fund the shortfall with the new 60% rate.

Correcting Errors

The complexity of the calculations under the Job Retention Scheme and the testing conditions in which many payroll administrators are working is creating a situation where mistakes on claims will inevitably be made.

HMR&C have acknowledged the difficult circumstances and have indicated that they do not intend on seeking out innocent mistakes and small errors for compliance action.

Where businesses have made errors there is a formal process to make corrections and a timeframe as follows:

If you have claimed too much CJRS grant and have not repaid it, you must notify HMR&C and repay the money by the latest of whichever date applies below:

• 90 days from receiving the CJRS money you are not entitled to

• 90 days from the point circumstances changed so that you were no longer entitled to keep the CJRS grant

• 20 October 2020, if on or before 22 July you received CJRS money you’re not entitled to, or if circumstances changed.

Amounts not declared to HMR&C under these rules, which are subsequently found to be incorrect, are subject to potential penalties and interest charges.

HMR&C have received many thousands of tip-offs concerning fraudulent misuse of COVID related assistance schemes and have already ear-marked many thousands for review.

Deferred VAT Repayment

HMR&C have commenced issuing letters to businesses inviting them to repay their COVID deferred VAT payments as soon as possible after the 30th June 2020. The actual deadline for repayment of those amounts has been confirmed as the 31st March 2021 and businesses will need to ensure they have reviewed their forward cashflows with these payments in mind.

Loans

The CBILS loan scheme closed to new applicants on the 30th September. The ‘Bounce Back Loan’ scheme remains available up to the 4th November although there is uncertainty whether this is the final date for applications or processed claims. Prompt action is recommended if you wish to consider the latter. Banks are undertaking increasing levels of due diligence for applications due to a perceived level of widespread fraud in this area, therefore, applications may take longer.

Furlough Scheme Replacement

The Job Retention Scheme ceases with effect from the 31st October and HMR&C have recently announced it will be replaced by the Job Support Scheme, which will run for 6 months to the end of April 2021.

At the outset, the scheme will benefit all employees where they work a minimum of one third of their usual contracted hours. HMR&C and the employer will then have to effectively ‘top up’ the employee’s wages, so that they earn at least 77% of their normal pay.

The government will pay one third of the hours not worked by the employee whilst the employer will pay an additional one third of unworked hours. The employer will have to cover the cost of employer’s NIC and pension contributions as this will not be met by government. The government contribution towards costs will be capped at £697.92 per month, per employee.

Calculation of normal wages will be similar to the rules under the ‘furlough’ scheme. Employers who use this scheme and retain staff through this period will still qualify for the Job Retention Bonus if certain criteria are met. Please note that ‘large’ companies will be subject to a financial test to see if they qualify for use of the new scheme.

Details on the new scheme are gradually being clarified further by HMR&C so it is advisable to ensure that you monitor announcements from HMR&C and utilise the expertise of your tax and accounting advisors at this time.

HOW TO SECURE HIGHER-QUALITY CLIENTS

With the tough financial crisis showing no signs of abating, we asked our friends at Houzz to give us their thoughts on how independent KBB installers can attract more affluent customers.

Do you want to elevate your business to the next level of success? Attracting high-end clients with larger budgets and spending power could be your answer, but how do you secure these valuable clients? Houzz. co.uk, the widely known platform for home renovation and design, spoke to its community of professionals to share its experience and advice, providing handy steps that will help you raise the bar and start attracting the right clients.

78 Business Advice - Houzz

Confidence

It is key to stay true to your business’s principles but think creatively about how you can adapt your strategies and have the confidence to challenge yourself. “Adopting a ‘yes, we can’ attitude and being confident will make you push yourself to accept new ventures and bigger projects,” says Amit Malhotra of Aflux Designs, an interior design practice on Houzz. However, it is important to remember that new clients won’t arrive overnight, so have faith and be patient.

Understand and Identify Your Target Market

High-end, quality clients are likely to be successful leaders and professionals in their fields and will expect a certain level of service and standard of quality. Be prepared to meet them at their level and show them that they can expect these high standards from you. These clients will have extensively researched similar businesses, so you will need to demonstrate the value of your services and how they will benefit from choosing you.

From the outset, you will need to show your top clients that you are prepared to go above and beyond to meet their needs, so offering a free one-to-one consultation will demonstrate your initiative and willingness. Using Houzz Pro software will allow you to move projects forward faster. By integrating your calendar you’ll be able to easily schedule video meetings to virtually meet your prospective clients.

Tailor Your Marketing Strategy

Review your website and marketing material to ensure it promotes your business with a highquality tone and sophistication otherwise, high-end clients are likely to be put off by the lack of professionalism. Ensure that websites are fast loading and easily accessible, as prospective clients will want to find the information they need as quickly as possible. If your website is out of date, Houzz offers professional website building and hosting services as part of the Houzz Pro package.

The language used on your website and marketing materials is key, is it an accurate representation of the high-quality level of service and finish you are able to deliver? Ensure you are highlighting your service, results and expertise. And lastly, what are you doing to attract these higher-quality clients? To stand out in this market it may be worth investing in advertising which will promote your business to this new audience. Houzz’s local advertising programme will allow you to target the geographic locations of your choice and with a dedicated account manager, you’ll be able to brand your business effectively.

Photography is Key

Photos of your past projects work as your CV for future prospective clients, so it is important to consider the quality of the images you’re showcasing. Are the images inspiring and aspirational? We find that the most successful professionals on Houzz are those who hire professional photographers to shoot staged photos of their projects for their portfolio.

Josh Delane, from The Wood Works, a carpentry business on Houzz, shares this valuable insight. “I think it comes down to how you portray yourself on all social platforms. If you are posting amateur photos taken on your phone it’s unlikely to grab the attention of high-quality clients. On the other hand, if you find a photographer who styles the shoot and takes high-quality images for you, it means that not only will you come across as professional and high-end, you may also have the added benefit of capturing other media attention, such as national magazines!”

Build Up Testimonials

Reviews are an important reference point for prospective clients, and they will expect to find them on your website and Houzz profile. The best way to prompt a client to leave a review is to ask, and it’s best to do it as soon as possible so the experience is fresh in their mind. Furniture maker on Houzz, William Jones of Clermont Carpentry says, “I make sure I maintain a warm relationship with my clients. If I’ve done a good job, I feel comfortable asking them for a review afterwards.”

When a project is wrapping up, send a polite message asking them if they could let others know about your service by writing a quick review on your website or Houzz profile. Make it easy for them by including a link that will take them directly there!

ONLINE TRAINING STRONGLY SUPPORTED

UK DEALER NETWORK

German kitchen manufacturer Rotpunkt, has claimed an overwhelming response from its UK dealer network on the strength of its recent online training schedule, which was put into operation during lockdown.

Directed by Kim Rochester, UK Customer Relations Manager at Rotpunkt, this pre-emptive training programme saw the company conduct a total of 38 half-hour sessions throughout a nine week period from 8th April 2020.

The training was aimed at empowering its retailers to manage and anticipate change and covered a range of business fundamentals in each session, including new skills and product updates along with topical industry discussion on the latest business challenges presented by coronavirus and the path forward.

By maintaining a high level of brand support, Rotpunkt hopes to place confidence back in the high street and effectively help its retailers navigate the ‘new normal’ with a renewed sense of retail-power.

Matt Phillips, Head of UK Operations at Rotpunkt says, “We knew we had to act quickly when

COVID-19 was first detected and we have worked tirelessly to not only remain available to our customers, but also work with them to help navigate these unprecedented times. We felt that a special package of bite-sized online training and peer-to-peer support via Zoom would be effective and so it has proven judging by the response of our 100 UK dealers”

Kim Rochester agrees with Matt and explains, “It was a privilege to plan and organise these sessions, which brought our retail community together and allowed us to maintain communication with our

customers when faced with showroom closures, reduced services, furloughed staff members and loss of earnings. I am delighted by the warm response from everyone who participated and I personally feel this initiative has helped strengthen our resolve to make this a regular standard-of-care for our UK dealer network.”
