In this issue…

For many, attention is turning to a well-earned summer break but, far from winding down, there are a whole host of big topics to cover in this issue of The Installer.

We find out about Band of Builders, the national charity for tradespeople, and the wonderful work they do to offer practical, financial, and wellbeing support for members of the UK construction industry and their families. Their list of past projects reveals stories of adversity through illness, injury or life-changing circumstances, all met with huge generosity and a determination to help. Read more and consider if you too can get involved and help to change lives.

We tackle the huge issue of sustainability in this edition too, hearing from designer Sandy Armitage on how installers can channel their inner-Womble and make good use of the furniture others may leave behind, cutting waste and making money into the bargain.

There are also some crucial, thought-provoking features on keeping your knowledge up-to-date when it comes to dealing with deadly asbestos, top tips for marketing your business, plus advice on minimising your exposure to one of the industry’s biggest blights – tool theft.

All that and much more is in this edition of The Installer.

Welcome…

It’s hard to believe that we are more than halfway through 2023 already! And what an incredibly busy time we’ve had since the last issue of The Installer Magazine.

In May, we were delighted to announce the assembly of the BiKBBI Education Steering Committee, which comprises a panel of highly experienced and knowledgeable individuals representing all areas of the sector who will work with BiKBBI to develop solutions to help solve the skills gap crisis.

This was followed by the news of the appointment of BiKBBI’s first Diversity Ambassador, the Hon. Dr Stuart Lawrence. This is a critical role and Stuart will work closely with the leadership team at BiKBBI as well as with the Education Steering Committee on initiatives to improve diversity across the sector. You’ll find more about both of these topics in this issue.

In June, we also managed to get out of the office for a few days and had the pleasure of meeting many of our registered businesses, corporate sponsors and strategic partners at InstallerSHOW 23 at the NEC Birmingham. It was a great event and rumour has it that the 2024 show will have even more to offer KBB installers, so watch this space.

You’ll find more about what the institute has been up to throughout the magazine, along with industry news, insights, innovation and inspiration. Happy reading!

BiKBBI UPDATE

Could foreign workers provide the answer to filling the KBB skills gap?

The shortfall in the number of skilled installers able to meet consumer demand is something that BiKBBI has long highlighted as a major issue for our industry. For many years, we have been warning of the consequences of not investing in efforts to bring new people into installation, and over the last three to four years we have unfortunately seen some of those consequences come in to effect.

To put it bluntly, there are not enough skilled installers ready to meet consumer demand for KBB installation. This is not only bad news for customers but is bad for all businesses that have a vested interest in the KBB industry, whether that be manufacturers, distributors, retailers, designers or indeed installation businesses. Aside from not having competent and compliant installers available when needed, skills gaps, by their very nature, create opportunities and sadly, opportunities often attract opportunists – and we all know the risk that unscrupulous opportunists present to industries like ours.

In this year’s Spring Budget, the Government went some way to addressing this challenge by announcing that construction workers are to be added to the Shortage Occupation List (SOL), paving the way for employers to sponsor workers from overseas.

Whilst this initiative offers a potentially useful shortterm fix to KBB businesses specifically operating within construction, or for those employing installers in a PAYE capacity, this does nothing for most of the retrofit market, subcontracted relationships or consumers wanting to connect with installation SMEs directly. The relaxation of visa rules will not deliver the much-needed KBB installation enterprise to the UK, nor will it do much to gain back the sheer loss of labour that disappeared back home post Brexit, or replenish the labour that grew old, retired, and left the industry. The government needs to tread carefully with the visa initiative. Foreign workers will bring much-needed skills and capacity, but employers need to consider language barriers, cultural differences, existing UK standards and legislation, as well as potential issues relating to workers’ rights and general labour standards. Employers hiring foreign workers through visa programmes should ensure that they comply with all applicable labour laws and regulations and provide adequate support and training to help foreign workers integrate into the local workforce – but remember, this is only applicable to employed labour – for those who sub-contract, it is not even an option.

It is also the case that relying on overseas workers is not a long-term solution to the skills gap crisis, with changes in immigration policies or economic conditions likely to impact the availability of foreign workers over time. To ensure the long-term health of our industry we need to keep the focus on investing in training a new generation of home-grown installers.

The ‘perfect storm’ situation that we are in – caused by a long-term lack of investment in vocational careers/ apprenticeships, Brexit, and the pandemic – has been a wakeup call for many and the metaphorical equivalent of the plaster being ripped off the festering wound. Simply parachuting labour in short term will simply place a fresh plaster on what is a real problem.

That is why BiKBBI is committed to keeping up the momentum with its ground-breaking apprenticeship programme and support package. And it is why the industry needs to get behind it as a matter of urgency.

The Level 2 Fitted Furniture Installer Apprenticeship has been available for some years now, and shortly after its launch, BiKBBI identified several blockages that ran the risk

bikbbi.org.uk 6 BiKBBI Update

of the qualification failing before it had even been established. In response, BiKBBI launched its Skills+ service in October 2021 – a set of solutions that brought together a network of approved training providers with a wider package of support that enabled installers to take on apprentices without having to deal with some of the more complex elements associated with taking on an apprentice; recruitment, employment and training complications.

Thanks to a promotional campaign made possible via support from BiKBBI corporate sponsors and accelerated by a sizable investment from Quooker, the demand from prospective apprentices was incredible, with more than 300 applicants showing an interest in KBB installation careers. However, thus far the number of installation businesses stepping forward to take on an apprentice has been disappointing. This is where the real problem now exists, despite the misconception that the ‘TikTok generation’ are not interested in getting their hands dirty – which simply is not true.

Even with a high demand for work and a simple, low-cost route to take on an apprentice, not enough installers are stepping up. There are probably a few reasons why, from a reluctance to take on additional wage commitments to a lack of understanding about the value of apprentices. As an industry, we all need to think about how these challenges can be overcome.

No idea should be off limits. For example, could retailers somehow share the financial burden of paying apprentice wages? Could a retailer incentivise its workforce to embrace the building of a future generation of installers? Could more major suppliers join the likes of Quooker to help promote the benefits of apprentices and how our scheme helps with

recruiting and managing them? And could the Government introduce tax incentives, or adaptions to the Levy framework, that recognise the commitment of small installation businesses that do invest in apprenticeships?

These are the types of questions our industry should be asking of itself to ensure that we have a sustainable future. We need to see no stone left unturned in encouraging installation businesses to grasp the opportunity to expand their business as well as helping to develop the talent of the future.

BiKBBI has recently increased its focus on learning and development. BiKBBI Futures presents a number solutions, housed in one place, to aid industry adoption. It outlines a three-pronged strategy focused on apprenticeships, CPD and retraining, with apprenticeships being simplified further to help installers understand the benefits in greater detail.

Damian Walters, BiKBBI’s CEO, said: “BiKBBI has been vocal on the subject of the skills shortage for over a decade, and I have been clear about the role the institute can play in helping the industry help itself. Now is the time for the whole sector to step up and I invite every single business in the sector to get in touch to find out how they can get involved.”

BIKBBI LOOKS TO THE FUTURE WITH LAUNCH OF EDUCATION COMMITTEE

bikbbi.org.uk 8 BiKBBI Update
“There is still much to do to deliver the workforce to meet demands of the future… education, learning and development should be at the top of the agenda for all stakeholders”

The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installation has recently launched the BiKBBI Education Steering Committee as part of its ongoing strategy to build a sustainable workforce of the future for the KBB installation sector.

As the only government-sanctioned organisation dedicated to kitchen, bedroom and bathroom installation, the institute represents thousands of installation businesses and installers nationwide and, furthermore, has established and nurtured relationships with a wide network of manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, retailers and other stakeholders within the KBB industry throughout its history.

BiKBBI is now using its network to form the BiKBBI Education Steering Committee (ESC), the purpose of which is to assemble stakeholders, advisors and sector specialists to determine the direction of the organisation in the development and support of education within the KBB installation sector. The ESC will facilitate debate on important issues facing the sector, define areas of focus in line with industry needs, identify goals and objectives and provide an effective forum for decision-making, and will primarily concentrate on apprenticeships, CPD and retraining.

The committee consists of a Committee Chairperson and ten committee members, assembled via a targeted recruitment process, ensuring representation from all areas of the sector, and all committee members possess the required skill, experience and enthusiasm to drive positive change. The ESC chair is Hannah Hockley from TAP, BiKBBI’s appointed apprenticeships partner. Board members include Tom Reynolds (BMA), Jerry Whiteley (CiPHE), Lisa Williamson (Achieve + Partners), Barry Moss (LEAP), Andy Rayner (Travis Perkins), Stephen Johnson (Quooker), Emma Leech (Howdens), Carl Terlecki (Terlecki Limited), Kerry Wilson (BMF) and Rebecca Bertram-Smith (The Furniture Maker’s Company).

Damian Walters, CEO of BiKBBI, said: “With an ageing workforce and declining numbers of compliant installation specialists, our industry faces an unprecedented challenge. For many years, our focus has been firmly on education and the development of a sustainable pipeline of professional installers for the future. As such, we collaborated with key strategic partners to build a modern, fit-for-purpose apprenticeship programme for fitted interiors and we also launched the BiKBBI employer support service in 2021. But there is still much to do to deliver the workforce to meet demands of the future, both in terms of numbers and standards, and education, learning and development should be at the top of the agenda for all stakeholders – ultimately, how we handle the current skills gap will impact all areas of the industry.

“The creation of the BiKBBI Education Steering Committee is the next level of collaboration for BiKBBI, as we create a forum for all areas of the industry to discuss, debate and decide on key topics that will work towards solving the mounting skills gap crisis and build a legacy to ensure a sustainable workforce for the future.”

unite to get former bricklayer back to his family

Luke’s homecoming: Trades

Suffolk man Luke Goold-Hannatt is set to go home at last – three years after suffering a catastrophic brain aneurysm – thanks to volunteers from tradespeople’s charity Band of Builders

A building charity has completed an extension to the home of a Woodbridge family so that they can get their 21-year-old son home – more than three years after he suffered a catastrophic brain aneurysm, which left him requiring round-the-clock care at a specialist neurological care centre in Ipswich.

In an emotional handover,  Luke Goold-Hannatt – flanked by his parents, brother and sister and a raft of well-wishers – visited his family home for the first time since the extension was completed by volunteers from Band of Builders.

More than 70 tradespeople

from across the UK answered the call to build the extension in just four weeks so that there is room for a ground-floor bedroom and wet room for Luke and also a bedroom for a specialist live-in carer.

Luke told the gathered crowd: “I just want to say thank you so much to every single person who helped to build me my new home – and how happy I am that I will be back with my family again. I’ve missed them all so much. You’re all amazing and I’ll never forget what you’ve done for me.”

Now that the extension is complete, specialist equipment

bikbbi.org.uk 14
Band Of Builders

will be installed in the next few weeks – after which Luke can finally go home by September: reuniting the family under one roof again for the first time in more than three years.

Trainee bricklayer Luke was just 17 years old when he suffered an aneurysm known as an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in January 2020. Mum Karen said his chances of survival were not good as he underwent life-saving surgery at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge to release the pressure to his brain.

Luke has been left with profound disabilities, which require constant care. He is now able to move one leg and one of his arms, and although he

cannot speak, he communicates by blinking and raising his eyebrows, as well as using an alphabet chart to spell out words.

Following the surgery, he was moved back to Ipswich Hospital before being transferred to a rehabilitation centre in Norwich. From there, he was moved to the Sue Ryder Neurological Care Centre The Chantry in Ipswich in January last year, where he receives specialist neurological care.

Dad David and Karen had been trying to fundraise the estimated £100,000 needed for the extensive renovations when Band of Builders – which completes practical projects to help members of the UK

construction industry, their families and their dependants who are faced with life-changing or limiting circumstances – stepped in to help.

The charity mobilised an army of volunteer tradespeople from the 50,000+ members of its community of supporters and well-wishers, which included plant workers, bricklayers, builders, roofers, plumbers, electricians and decorators.

It also drew on the backing of businesses to provide materials and support, including headline sponsor DEWALT – as well as Lee Brothers, Reconomy. Jewson, Eastern Concrete, Travis Perkins, Uheat, Talasey, Forterrra, SIG Roofing, Flex R, Denmans, Howdens, Marshalls, Kent Blaxill, Crown

and Hamilton, Catnic, Wavin, Karndean, Weber, Celotex, LDM, Holmes Plant Hire & Construction, Sovereign Turf, Tru Mix, Selco, Assistive Bathing, and Persimmon Homes.

As well as thanking all the volunteers and businesses that supported the project, Band of Builders Operations Director Tony Steel also praised local businesses and the local community for its support in keeping the volunteer workforce supplied with food and drinks during the project. “Our corporate sponsors have been amazing in supporting Luke’s project by generously donating time and materials –which we simply couldn’t have done without.”

“We are also grateful that the local community came out

in force to support the project to get Luke home, and the generosity of all those businesses that supplied food to keep our volunteers fed was incredible.”

He added: “Everyone has been on a mission to get Luke home and back where he belongs: with his family. Three years has been a long time to be separated from his parents and younger brother and sister – and it has been especially hard for them because they had to endure all the restrictions around COVID, which meant they weren’t able to spend precious time with Luke.

“Band of Builders answered the call when the family put out an appeal to get Luke home before Christmas. And in a few short weeks, their Christmas wish will come true.”

BAND OF BUILDERS

Band of Builders was born in 2016 when founder Adam Smith took to social media to ask for help renovating the home of close friend and colleague Keith Ellick, who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. The incredible response from tradespeople across the UK saw the project completed and demonstrated what can be achieved when the industry stands together.

It has grown to become a registered charity that completes practical projects to help members of the UK construction industry who are battling illness or injury. For each project, volunteers come together to help their fellow tradespeople through renovations or repairs that make a real difference to their lives.

Recent projects have included:

• Building a ground-floor extension so that Howard Holden could go back to his Oswaldtwistle home after nearly two years in a rehabilitation centre in Leeds, after he was left with severe brain damage after suffering heart failure;

• An outside space was built for Tess Robison from South Shields to help as she recuperates from chemotherapy after she hit the national news headlines after her dog alerted her to ovarian cancer;

• The first project in Northern Ireland was building a new sunroom for former bricklayer Kevin McGowan, who has been bed-bound for a decade because of a rare neurological disorder, which means he requires round-the-clock care;

• Completely reconfiguring the ground floor of the home of plasterer Mark’s partner Cher Little, who was left relying on a wheelchair after having her legs amputated;

• Revamping the home of chartered surveyor Rob Lamb in Solihull to make it safe and accessible after he was left paralysed by a fall.

• Band of Builders also organises the Big Brew, an annual event to raise awareness of the mental health crisis in the construction industry – where the suicide rate is estimated to be as high as two people every day. UK construction workers are also nearly three times as likely to die by suicide than their counterparts in other industries.

SPREADING

the Word

Whether you are still riding the wave of the unprecedented increased demand for KBB installers, caused largely by Brexit and COVID-19, or you have already started to feel the anticipated drop off, with the order books starting to look a little more like pre2019, marketing should almost certainly be on your radar. Regardless of the industry, the rule is the same – when faced with uncertainty, it always pays to have a plan. And uncertainty remains the only certainty for the UK economy right now. So, maybe it’s time to start planning. Marketing can be a minefield so here’s a few simple steps that could keep you on your current path or set you back on course for success.

KNOW WHAT YOU WANT!

Goals and objectives are key to marketing success, so be clear about what your business needs are and what success looks like. Being vague doesn’t pay as it is then difficult to define a path to help you get to where you want to be. Just doing better or being

bigger isn’t enough – you need to be more specific. Do you want to increase your total number of projects by 10%? Do five, ten or more jobs a year? Or perhaps you want to diversify into another area of installation to deliver growth? If you are clear about your objectives, it’s much easier to work on a plan to get you there.

UNDERSTAND YOUR AUDIENCE

To win more business, you need to understand who your customer is and what drives their decision making. Particularly if you are working in the domestic market and directly with homeowners. Consider where they might go to find a tradesperson and how they decide which tradesperson to use. Can you use your current customer base to conduct your own research? Ask them how they found you and what made them decide to use you. Once you have this knowledge, you have a good basis to start thinking about how to attract new customers.

bikbbi.org.uk 18 Marketing
To the uninitiated, marketing your business can sometimes seem like a daunting task, but there are a few key ideas for any installation business to bear in mind to ensure they are on the path to marketing success. Michelle Daniels, Director of Marketing and Communications at BiKBBI, shares some vital pointers….

WHAT’S YOUR USP?

Demand exceeding supply is the norm at the moment, but it still pays to make sure you stand out from the competition. Think about your audience and what is important them, and then build your Unique Selling Point around that. You may already have a USP that you can promote? Perhaps your approach to sustainability is your point of difference or maybe you have additional skills and training in specialist areas such as fabrication. Know what makes you stand out from the crowd and shout about it.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF ENDORSEMENT!

Word of mouth marketing is one of the most powerful forms of promoting your business – and what’s more, it’s free! A positive customer review, recommendation or endorsement will deliver far greater return for your business than a paid-for advert. Do you currently ask your customers

for a written review when you complete a job? If not, perhaps you should. And if you do, are you using them to their full potential? You can share reviews across a wide range of marketing materials and platforms, and you can even maximise your customers’ networks by asking them to write a post about your work on their own profiles. Be sure to ask them to tag you and your business.

ONLINE PRESENCEWEBSITE, SOCIAL MEDIA, OR BOTH?

This is often a quandary for small businesses, but fortunately the days when you weren’t considered a proper business if you didn’t have a website are long gone, especially if you are not an e-commerce business! Many brands are moving more towards investing their time in

bikbbi.org.uk 19 Marketing
“Goals and objectives are key to marketing success, so be clear about what your business needs are and what success looks like... Being vague doesn’t pay as it is then difficult to define a path to help you get to where you want to be.”

social media because it allows two-way communication – you can tell the world about your business and your customers can endorse your business and your services which is far more impactful that self-promotion (see point above). Social media doesn’t have to cost anything, it can be managed effectively on the go and, if your social media skills are not up to scratch, there are hundreds of free courses online and at local colleges throughout the UK.

USE WHAT’S FREE AND AVAILABLE TO YOU

Social media is an obvious choice for free marketing but what else can you access that might help? If you are more digitally savvy, you can use platforms like Canva to create content to promote your business. But a

back-to-basics approach might also be beneficial. Do you have local community noticeboards you can use to attract new business? Perhaps your local newspaper/website might be interested in publishing articles and consumer advice from your ‘expert’ point of view? If you are BiKBBI registered, you have access to the Find-AnInstaller online search tool – are you maximising that benefit? Also, look for networking opportunities in your area… which leads to my next point.

CONNECT WITH OTHERS

Running a small business can be lonely, so it is always good practice to connect with other like-minded businesses and individuals but it’s also a great way to pick up new contacts and opportunities. There will be

business forums in your area for sure but there are also hundreds of online communities that you can engage to promote yourself, idea share and problem-solve.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE?

Most important when planning your marketing strategy is knowing what success looks like for you. Think back to point one, when you were defining your goals and objectives. From the outset, you should know in your own mind what achievements will quantify success – but remember to be realistic. There are very few things you can do from a marketing perspective that will deliver overnight success (unless you have a huge budget behind you) but having a plan and following the fundamentals will put you in a good position of strength.

The hidden DANGER within

Tradespeople across Great Britain are being warned about the hidden dangers associated with asbestos

The warning comes as part of the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) Asbestos and You campaign targeting tradespeople about the personal risks from asbestos that still exist in properties across the country today.

Around 5,000 people die each year from asbestos-related illnesses and asbestos can still be found in buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000. But HSE is warning despite the ban on its use, many buildings still contain asbestos, and it is still a serious risk to anyone exposed to it at any age.

Tim Beaumont, HSE’s Acting Head of Construction Policy Sector, said: “Asbestos can be found in things like Artex, cement boards under eaves, garage roofs, old bath panels, boiler houses and fires and even mortar between bricks can contain asbestos.

“There is no known safe level of asbestos exposure but that’s not to say it can’t be managed safely. All tradespeople should make sure they know the basics about identifying

asbestos. Before carrying out any construction work, there’s a legal requirement to identify whether asbestos is present and could be disturbed.

“Younger tradespeople need to know the dangers behind asbestos as it could affect them in later life like it is affecting older tradespeople now.” Asbestos is only dangerous if not maintained in a safe condition or if physically disturbed without the right measures in place to control exposure to fibres.

Craig Evans, UKATA (United Kingdom Asbestos Training Association) Chief Operating Officer, added: “I wholeheartedly support HSE’s campaign to raise asbestos awareness and the importance of training across industry.

“The dangers of asbestos are very real, with over 5,000 people in the UK dying each year from asbestos-related diseases. It is crucial that tradespeople are aware of the risks involved in disturbing or damaging asbestos-containing materials, as inhaling these fibres can lead

to devastating diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis.

“UKATA members are committed to providing highquality asbestos training, delivered by highly experienced and competent professionals with extensive knowledge and expertise in their field, to help prevent unnecessary exposure and protect the health and wellbeing of all those working in the industry.”

From the 1950s until 1999, asbestos containing materials were used extensively in the construction and maintenance of buildings in Great Britain. When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed or damaged, fibres

bikbbi.org.uk 22

are released into the air. If these fibres are inhaled, they can cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos related lung cancer, asbestosis, and pleural thickening. These diseases will not affect you immediately as they often take a long time to develop, but once diagnosed, it is often too late to do anything.

It can take 20 to 30 years before symptoms appear. Symptoms can include shortness

of breath, persistent cough, wheezing, extreme tiredness, chest or shoulder pain and, in more advanced cases, swollen fingertips.

If asbestos cannot be safely managed, it should be removed by a licensed asbestos contractor. Where present, asbestos should be closely managed by those responsible for the building.

Asbestos and You

Former shipyard worker’s warning to today’s young tradespeople

A former shipyard worker is warning young tradespeople of the dangers of asbestos after losing around a third of his body weight since being diagnosed with mesothelioma.

James Queen, 74, worked as a shipwright in Liverpool and Glasgow where he was exposed to asbestos. Last year he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a type of cancer linked to asbestos exposure. Before diagnosis he used to weigh 14-and-a-half stone but now touches the scales at just over 9-and-a-half stone.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops in the lining that covers the outer surface of some of the body’s organs. James says he was regularly exposed to asbestos as he embarked on an apprenticeship at Glasgow docks in the 1960s.

Statistics published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), show 2,268 people died from mesothelioma in 2021.

James moved to Liverpool in 1970 and continued working as a shipwright after marrying Patricia. They were married for 51 years – Patricia died in 2022 from dementia, the same year James was diagnosed with mesothelioma. James said: “I knew something was wrong with me last year but as my wife was ill as well, I just concentrated on her.

“It was only when I had a fall at my wife’s funeral and broke my hip, scans found two types of cancer including mesothelioma. I know there’s no cure for it and I’m having treatment every three weeks which is working but my state of life isn’t very good.

“I can’t drive anywhere, I’ve lost my confidence, I’m short of breath, constantly coughing with nothing coming up – my body is wasted.”

James continues to receive treatment at Clatterbridge Hospital in Wirral and added: “Thankfully I’ve got my three sisters who live nearby, a good circle of friends and neighbours so someone is here with me every day. I don’t know how I’d cope without them.

“People just don’t know about mesothelioma and at the time if I knew asbestos was so bad for your health, I’d have never worked with it or around it. Younger tradespeople need to be alert to the danger it poses.”

Safe and secure

According to crime statistics from the Metropolitan Police, there were 34,712 tools stolen in London alone from January 2021 to October 2022. That’s a 62% increase from the 21,445 stolen from January 2019 to December 2020. But tool theft isn’t just restricted to London though. Tradespeople throughout the UK are at risk, with hotspots also including Cambridgeshire, South Yorkshire and Lancashire. The rising cost of living and trading has put businesses under immense pressure. As a kitchen, bedroom and

bathroom installer, stolen tools and large-scale equipment could devastate a business struggling in the current economic climate. Tool theft can severely cost businesses and potentially delay jobs, damaging client relationships. Putting security measures in place can help to avoid falling victim to tool theft, preventing unnecessary costs and downtime.

Van tool theft

The data shows thefts from vehicles accounted for a third of all tool thefts in the capital in 2021 and 2022. Tradespeople are ten times more likely to

Thefts are on the rise, so it has never been more important to protect the tools of your trade. Grant Barnfather, Client Executive for UK Schemes + Affinities at Marsh Commercial, offers some advice on how to prevent and protect against a crime that can have a huge impact on livelihoods

experience tool theft from a vehicle than from a building site or their place of work— with only 14% of cases leading to the suspect being identified.

According to a study commissioned by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the average value of tools stored in a van is £2,500. This works out at £4.4bn of replacement tools each year, leading to an average six-day pause in work. It’s not uncommon for tools to be stolen from vans during daylight hours while contractors work on-site or even while parked outside

Tool Theft

wholesalers.

The fact is thieves are opportunists. They will take whatever is easily accessible whenever they see the chance: from boxes of tools to electronic devices and power tools. Powered hand tools are thieves’ top choice, accounting for 22,005 incidents. This is four times the number of thefts of standard hand tools and equipment.

How can you reduce the risk of van tool theft?

As a KBB installer, you’ll likely have security plans in place to protect your tools and equipment if you need to leave them in your van overnight. However, it’s worth investing in some additional measures to protect your work tools and vehicles throughout the day:

• Deadlocks even while you’re working on-site.

• Van safes ‒ secure vaults that can be fixed to your van.

• Secure your windows with grills or panels.

• Use security tags or chips to deter thieves and help recovery if something is stolen.

• Use bright-coloured paint to make them more identifiable and less attractive to thieves, and mark them with your name and postcode.

• Van alarms – to deter thieves from taking your tools or van.

BiKBBI has teamed up with Vanmate to provide members easy-to-install alarm systems at discounted rates, to make it easier for KBB installers to protect their livelihood.

Removing your tools from your van each night is advisable if possible. Although some insurance policies can cover tool insurance in vans overnight, it’s better to eliminate the risk in the first place and avoid having

to make a claim.

Protecting your van from theft

With the rise of skeleton keys and other technologies designed to override security systems, van theft is pretty easy. Here are some tips to keep your van safe:

• Park your van near CCTV coverage – and close to your house or site. Position your load or side van door adjacent to a wall to restrict access if possible.

• Use tracking (GPS) services – to track your fleet; they provide an extra line of defence against theft. While professional thieves will know where to find and remove a GPS device before driving off, many opportunist thieves will not.

• Install an anti-theft product – an OBD port protector, immobiliser, tracker or alarm systems. Steering locks make it a lot more difficult to steal a vehicle. Invest in disk locks for all your trade vehicles, and remember to fit them during the day and after hours routinely.

• Van lock protection plates –steel plates that encase the existing locks on your van, preventing thieves from trying to drill or prise them out.

• Lock your van’s doors during the day – to keep opportunistic thieves out.

• Place stickers on your van – alerting potential thieves to alarms, safes and other protective measures.

Personal tool insurance

You wouldn’t think of taking on a job without the right tools; they’re essential to your work. Equally, it’s critical you have the right insurance to protect your tools against theft.

Here are a few things you should think about when arranging your tools insurance:

• Tool extension – many off-the-shelf policies don’t provide overnight cover for your tools. It’s worth checking any exclusions in your policy.

• Keep an inventory – do you know how much your kit is worth? Keep a list of all your equipment, including evidence of ownership (receipts), calibration certificates, and serial numbers, so the cost can be accurately calculated in the event of theft or loss. For older tools, keep photographs on file.

• Van insurance –your commercial vehicle insurance will be separate from your contractors’ insurance policy.Whilst contractors’ insurance may be able to cover the cost of your tools and equipment, it will not cover damage to or loss of your commercial vehicles. In this case, you’ll need separate van insurance to cover vehicle theft, either through an individual or fleet policy if required.

Can you recover stolen tools?

If you’re the victim of tool theft, follow these steps:

1. Report the theft to the police.

2. Provide your insurer with your up-to-date inventory to get an estimate for replacement.

3. If you have a tracking device, use them to locate your tools; inform the police where you suspect they are, rather than attempting to retrieve them yourself.

4. If you have serial numbers of

Tool Theft

your stolen equipment, it’s advisable to set up alerts on online marketplaces such as Gumtree, eBay and Tool Exchange. These sites have stringent checking processes to prevent registered stolen tools from being sold on

Protection Innovation

these sites. Your insurance can help protect against the cost of replacing your tools in cases of theft. However, robust security measures and procedures are the best way to protect your essential business equipment.

Here are some products to consider for helping to protect your tools from thieves…

L4V’s Anti-Peel Kit – also known as the L4V Anti-Peel Brackets – have been specifically designed to significantly both reduce and prevent the risk of the ‘peel and steal’ type of attack on a van’s side doors. By leveraging weight and applying pressure to the weak points on your doors, thieves are able to prise them open – literally allowing them access to your cargo in a matter of seconds. A door with the device fitted is 3000% stronger than without it against this type of attack. www.locks4vans.co.uk

The L4V Van Alarm is the only Thatcham-accredited van alarm for the light commercial vehicle market. It comes with an anti-peel door sensor, which is another way to protect against the common ‘peel and steal’ method of attack. www.locks4vans.co.uk

Each Datatag Powertool Security System contains a new unique ultra destruct warning label with QR code and a bottle containing 100s of Datadots. The specially designed Datatag labels contain a unique identification number and QR code, and they also warn off any potential thieves that the tool is protected. They are both attractive and impossible to remove without damage.

The Datadots in a UV trace adhesive can be applied with the supplied brush to almost every part of the tool, giving it 100s of identifying marks, making it impossible for a thief to remove and easy for police to identify. www.datatag.co.uk

The SelectaDNA Tools and Equipment Kit can mark up to 50 items including drills, wrenches, angle grinders, chain saws, hedge trimmers and hand tools. A unique formula of DNA, UV tracer, and microdots, the SelectaDNA solution is inconspicuous and almost impossible to remove.

However, in the unfortunate event that tools do get stolen, SelectaDNA can help lead to their recovery and even a conviction. The use of SelectaDNA offers even further protection, by forensically marking assets and recording them on the secure SAR database. A code found on an item of property or criminal can then be identified back to a specific owner and location. SelectaDNA effectively renders the tool worthless to anyone other than its legitimate owner.

James Brown, SelectaDNA’s Managing Director, said: “Whether you’re a plumber, a builder or an electrician, tools are your most important resources. By marking each tool with SelectaDNA and displaying a warning sticker in your vehicle or on your site, you can dramatically reduce the chance of theft.” www.selectadna.co.uk

Secure-It Locks On Vans offers free quotations and a mobile fitting service. Catering for everyone from a one-person business to a multi-vehicle fleet, products available for install include:

• Hook deadlocks & straight bolt deadlocks – The main deterrent to prevent thieves from trying to break in, these are manually operated with a key;

• Slamlocks – Visible deterrent, locks operate automatically on door closure;

• Ford replocks – These replace the vulnerable barrel on the driver’s door which is prone to being picked/twisted with a screwdriver. This barrel overrides the central locking;

• External protective plates / handle shields – These shield the weak points of the vans to prevent them from being drilled through to access the internal locking mechanisms of the doors;

• Anti-peel brackets – Non-visible but help prevent thieves from doing the peel/bend attack which often leaves vans needing new side loading doors;

• Cylinder protective plates – These protect the area of where the deadlocks are installed, should your van still be targeted. www.locksonvans.co.uk

Don’t lose RE-USE

From the very beginning of my career, I recognised how much the installer’s word was taken as authoritative by the client, and how much influence they had over the choices made by the client. The power in that relationship makes the subject of sustainability an important topic to discuss, particularly the value of the preloved and what manufacturers could be doing to help you to be greener.

I’ve found the approach to installation in the KBB sector has generally been based upon pricing – in a skip to deal with the dust and rubble of removal, followed by installation of the replacement – basically, out with the old and in with the new. The ‘rip-out and skip, then install as quickly as possible’, was, and still seems, to be the norm. I get

it, you’re on a price rather than a day rate and don’t want anything to hold you up. You’re probably crazy busy and already trying to be in two places at once, so you need the new stuff sitting in the garage and the skip on the drive.

With all this in mind, I’m hoping to challenge your thinking and open the conversation about the pertinent subject of sustainability by discussing some ideas and possibilities for both saving money and making money from the products you remove and reinstall.

According to research* , roughly 1.2m kitchens are replaced each year. Around 330,000 of those are less than four years old and about 15% of those (49,500) meet a retail saleable criteria. Of the

remaining 870k that are over four years old, around 1.25% (nearly 11,000) meet a retail criteria. That means there’s an estimated addressable UK market of over 60,000 resaleable kitchens within the retail sector.

There are no official figures for re-saleable bathrooms but it’s believed to be roughly 30% of the re-saleable kitchens figure so that’s about 18,000. This is all based upon the high quality, high-end market. There is value in the preloved. We know this because of the success of retailers like the Rehome Outlet selling used kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms – including reconditioned Quooker boiling taps. There’s also The Used Kitchen Company with over 17 years in the secondhand sector. But it doesn’t have to be only high-end products. If it’s still working well and able to be cleanly uninstalled – whether it’s a kitchen sink and tap or a

whole bathroom suite – there’s a market out there. You will sell them on, and you could also get the job of reinstalling the items. Win-win-win – you win, the client wins and the environment wins.

I have clients who’ve bought a £60k used kitchen from Rehome for £15k which I’ve designed into their rebuilt space with their tradespeople installing to my plan. They’ve sold the surplus granite worktops, sink and tap on eBay and then bought new worktops, resulting in more money to invest in the fabric of the refurbishment. The builder/installer has done very well from their project.

Sinks, taps and old appliances often have plenty of life left in them and that’s where social media comes in. Load up a few photos and you will find buyers. It has become quite common and you may already do this. But if you are removing a really old and worn out kitchen that has

no redeemable features you still don’t have to put that into the skip. You can call Hippo and they will remove the kitchen from site and recycle it.

So what can manufacturers, suppliers and retailers do to reduce the waste occurring in the sale and purchase of a new kitchen or bathroom? Plastic packaging is a real problem, and so is in-built fittings wastage. Take a combination sink waste pack, for example, that holds only one part that you need. You’ve had to buy the whole pack as your supplier doesn’t sell loose fittings, but what happens to the remainder?

Padding materials do not need to contain plastic. Cardboard boxes should be sealed with paper tape. Don’t forget that people really value cardboard boxes; are always on social media asking for them, and they’ll even collect them from you!

My own approach has brought me eco-conscious clients, purchasing used kitchens that I have designed into their homes, choosing waxed Venetian-plastered bathroom walls instead of plastic-coated shower walls, and folks who want to refurbish their homes with new goods from companies that manufacture from recycled materials.

Without treading too much on the moral high ground, we all have a responsibility to reduce waste and reduce the adverse impact that waste has. It can be done, and you can make money out of it at the same time. www.sandyarmitage.co.uk

SELLING sustainability

Retailers and installers play a vital role in educating consumers on the importance of investing in the right appliances for their home. Stephen Johnson, MD at Quooker UK & Ireland, explains why…

What is driving the focus on sustainability?

As the way in which we consume water changes, combined with the growing awareness around our environmental footprints and the accelerating strain that the cost-of-living crisis is having on the economy, consumers are increasingly willing to invest in creative solutions that not only support them financially long-term, but are sustainable and contribute to responsible consumption. A topic that is close to the company’s heart, Quooker is determined to provide products and manufacturing techniques that not only support the environment but do not cost the earth.

What is the retailer/installer’s role in educating customers on the right solutions and how are manufacturers supporting this?

As the first point of call for customers, it is essential retailers and installers are armed with the knowledge to be able to advise consumers on the right appliances for their home.

At Quooker, our entire business approach has been built around a ‘dealer first’ business model.

Whether showrooms are selling thousands of units per year or one a month, every sale is equally valued. As such, each dealer no matter its size, gets the same level of support and service.

Only by understanding each business individually can you deliver a bespoke approach that

works for both parties. Flexibility is king. This is what we pride ourselves on doing. A practical example of this is in POS material for showrooms. Rather than providing one fixed display, we work with each dealer to build bespoke displays that work for them, investing in cobranded material that suits the individual space. Focusing on the knowledge, skills and support for installers is critical too – installation is one of the most

bikbbi.org.uk 34
– the importance of educating consumers

important parts of our industry and it is the installer who provides the lasting impressing for any customer.

From ensuring we are in regular contact with showrooms and owners to running dealer incentives schemes to reward achievements and to keep motivation, training and virtual sales assistance should customers want to talk directly to us from showrooms, ensuring retailers and installers have the know-how to upsell and explain innovative, sustainable solutions to homeowners is essential.

Why is a Quooker tap a greener alternative?

According to a survey by the Energy Saving Trust, 75% of

Brits admit to overfilling their kettle each time they use it, wasting a staggering £68 million on energy bills a year across British households. Of these respondents, 40% of households boil the kettle four times or more a day.

Real savings come from boiling only what is needed. Unlike the energy-guzzling kettle, Quooker taps use very little electricity and give impressive energy-saving results. Thanks to its advanced technology, it takes only 10 watts to keep water in the tank at 110°C, while the average kettle uses 2,200 watts to boil 1.7 litres of water. Dispensing the right amount of water needed at any given time, boiling

water taps help reduce water wastage – aiding to minimise the negative environmental impact and supporting energy efficiency within the home. Gone are the days of overboiling the kettle only to pour away unused water. Contributing to a greener planet, Quooker’s latest accessory, the CUBE, means that Quooker taps can now dispense sparkling water at the touch of a button. Saving consumers time and space, with CUBE the immediacy of super chilled and filtered water can be enjoyed without having to wait or waste water. Whilst it may feel like a luxury to have sparkling water on tap, the CUBE is a more sustainable solution. The average UK household uses a staggering 360 plastic bottles per year, resulting in huge volumes of waste nationwide. However, one canister of C02 yields 60 litres of carbonated water which significantly reduces the need for such singleuse plastic bottles. Determined to find a better solution for consuming carbonated water, dispensing precisely the amount needed at any given moment, and with canisters that can be returned and re-filled after use, CUBE ensures responsible and more sustainable consumption. CUBE can be attached to any tap in the Quooker range.

By collectively working together across the industry – retailers, installers and manufacturers hand-in-hand – we can help to create a more sustainable future. www.quooker.co.uk

ELECTRIC DREAMS

Radiator manufacturer Stelrad has taken a new step in meeting the needs of its UK and Ireland customer base with the launch of its Electric Series…

It is the first time the Stelrad brand has ventured into the electric marketplace since it began manufacturing in 1936 and it is setting its sights on the electric market with a highly competitive range of both steel and aluminium electric radiators. Available through merchants from September 2023, the Electric Series will include more than a dozen different models with a number of sizes of each model available, with standard radiators for any room along with a selection of towel rails specifically targeted at bathrooms and ensuites.

Chris Harvey, Stelrad’s Head of Marketing for the UK and Ireland, said: “The new range offers a selection of radiators and towel rails with Stelrad’s unbeatable quality and design to suit every area in the home and to match or contrast with décor in every room. The selection includes radiators that are dry, dry stone and fluid filled offering a full choice of options within the technology.

“As you would expect, the new range offers a variety of energy saving and comfort enhancing features with fitted and Wi-Fi enabled controls. Some of the

new radiators will be ‘three in one’ options, featuring a fan heater at the base of the radiator and manual controls that allow you to use the towel rail and the fan heater individually or together if you wish. Colours will be white for all radiators with the option of anthracite grey and chrome for some of the models.”

The radiators feature the innovative ‘open window’ function that enables the appliance to automatically detect when a window is opened near the towel warmer and to switch to ‘anti-freeze’ mode to prevent unnecessary heating and to avoid wasting energy. Similarly, it can detect when the window is closed and restore the operating conditions set previously. The appliance comes on automatically at ambient temperatures below 7°, and when the ‘child safety’ function is activated, the surface of the appliance is cooler than in normal operation in the currently active mode to avoid the risk of burns caused by brief accidental contact.

Harvey added: “We pride ourselves in being a one stop shop for all things radiators and the arrival of the electric series builds on that claim still further.”

Working towards a sustainable future

Lecico Bathrooms recently hosted its ‘Future of Sustainable Bathrooms’ event, exploring some of the critical issues that the sector needs to address now and for the coming years

With a steadfast commitment to promoting sustainable products and environmental consciousness, Lecico Bathrooms organised a wide-ranging meeting to foster dialogue, share insights, and introduce new innovative products to inspire positive change within the bathroom industry. The event welcomed architects, interior designers, developers, contractors, retailers, and merchants interested in sustainable bathroom design.

Aiming to capture the imagination of participants, The Future of Sustainable Bathrooms provided a platform for professionals passionate about sustainability to delve into the latest advancements in sustainable bathroom solutions. Lecico Bathrooms introduced new and innovative concepts aimed at revolutionizing the way we approach sustainability in the

bathrooms industry.

The thought-provoking program featured panel discussions and interactive product demonstrations. The panel discussion offered insights from industry leaders and experts on sustainability within the bathrooms sector, exploring new technology and innovation, circular economy bathrooms, water conservation, emerging trends, and the role of technology in reducing our environmental impact.

Lecico also showcased its beautiful new range of Design Series sanitaryware and furniture, which incorporates water saving low-flush technology, and demonstrated Propelair, the world’s lowest water-flush WC.

The event unveiled a new exclusive UK partnership with Repeat Materials, a new cutting-edge sustainable

Making the most of a helping hand

We asked Carl Terlecki, Managing Director and Lead Installer at Terlecki Limited, to put Häfele’s XtraHand dust extraction tool to the test. Here’s his verdict…

I was tasked with installing a sliding barn door rail kit as part of a kitchen/utility renovation and figured this would be the perfect opportunity to try out the new XtraHand from Häfele. I needed to drill 5 12mm holes for the fixings. I started with a 5mm pilot and then moved to a 12mm bit. The hand power tool I use requires two hands due to its weight and for accuracy. Other than either creating a mess or trying to hold a dustpan against the wall, I have yet to find an easy solution for keeping the workspace and interior finishes clean and tidy so was

keen to see if the XtraHand could fill this gap.

The product comes in two parts – the suction head and extractor adaptor. The adaptor slotted onto my extractor with ease and the XtraHand onto the adaptor. It was then a simple task to position onto the wall while the extractor was running. I then had the freedom to use both hands and move about into position. As I was drilling, 95% of the waste disappeared and the final 5% cleared away as I repositioned the XtraHand for the next hole. There was minimal residue on the wall and

nothing on the floor – a real revelation!

It is worth noting that the XtraHand only works with suction, and of course its effectiveness depends on a few factors such as extractor suction strength, flatness of surface, and the weight and position of the hose.

I will definitely be using this tool for future tasks and recommend it to any installer

who wants to keep things clean, tidy and accurate. The XtraHand will become a go-to tool for drilling applications and I am sure many more tasks.

Thank you BiKBBi for sending this out for our team to try and thank you Häfele for the chance to check this tool out…. Our only problem now is to decide who on the team gets to keep it!

www.terlecki.co.uk

Michael Roberts, an apprentice for Terlecki Limited, was tasked with installing two integrated appliances in a kitchen installation. He needed to drill holes for the hinges on the doors. He decided to try the XtraHand from Häfele because when drilling holes for hinges it creates a large amount of waste that needs clearing.

The XtraHand and adaptor easily slotted onto his extraction and hose and all the waste was cleared as he was drilling. Michael found that he could easily reposition the XtraHand after each hole was drilled and was impressed to see that no waste was left on the surface. He reports that the tool was fantastic – and asked how he could get hold of one for himself!

FLOORING FINE

Malmo’s Rigid Senses Pressed Bevel combines easy installation with water-tight joints and premium aesthetics

Malmo Rigid Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) is proving a popular floorcovering choice among consumers, contractors and installers alike thanks to its ability to deliver durability, high design, easy installation and low maintenance. Now the range has just got even better with the addition of eight stylish new Pressed Bevel plank designs to the Rigid Senses collection, offering increased water resistance and improved aesthetics.

WATER-TIGHT JOINTS

A major selling point of the new Pressed Bevel designs is their eased bevelled edge combined with the advanced Välinge 5Gi installation system, which gives the consumer extra peace of mind that no

water will seep through the joints to the subfloor. This makes the flooring a particularly good choice to recommend in rooms prone to spillages such bathrooms, washrooms, kitchens, utilities and where pet bowls are located. The flooring can be installed with ease, only requiring a firm tap with a soft hammer to the end profile to ensure the joints are completely tight.

The eased edge is formed by pressing the surface layer down into the joint during the manufacturing process, rather than cutting through it like painted bevel alternatives, resulting in a completely watertight finish. The elimination of v-grooves between the planks also means there are less places for dust to gather, making

the flooring even easier for customers to maintain.

EASY INSTALLATION

Like all products in the Malmo collection, the new Pressed Bevel designs are installed using the patented Välinge click installation system. With a 30-year history and global reputation, Välinge is particularly well-known for its easy, quick and reliable locking systems which eliminate the need for adhesives and offer the benefits of tight and secure joints that resist separation and help prevent moisture from penetrating the flooring.

As with all Malmo Rigid products, the end joints on the Pressed Bevel designs need less positioning space, making the flooring ideal for tricky or restricted spaces such as around sanitaryware and underneath doors in bathrooms. The built-in 1mm underlay saves time, cost

Flooring

and offers a minimum sound reduction of 19dB.

PREMIUM AESTHETICS

The Senses Pressed Bevel collection comprises a broad palette of stunning woodgrain designs, all with an authentic registered surface texture and the eased bevelled edge which results in a softer aesthetic at the groove.

The trend-inspired and design versatile collection includes

whitewashed effects, warm greys, classic oaks and rich brown tones, meaning there’s something to recommend to customers whatever their design taste and interior style. Gail Alcock, Product Director for Malmo, said: “The new Pressed Bevel designs are a great option for installers to use and recommend to customers. We recognise that Välinge technology is a preferred option for many installers being so

easy to fit, and 5Gi is the latest innovation for the Malmo brand that only requires a touch more impact than 5G to fix the planks into place. The end result is a super tight joint for the customer which gives extra protection and peace of mind that no water will go into the subfloor. Customers will also benefit from easy cleaning and a beautiful aesthetic offered by the eased bevelled edge and registered surface texture.”

The complete Malmo Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) range now offers a wide choice of 65 designs across its Rigid and Stickdown formats. All products are available for 24-48 hour delivery from all IDS branches nationwide.

OmegaReimagined

Bushboard aims to redefines accessible luxury in kitchen design with a fresh range of laminate worktop options

K&B surface manufacturer Bushboard has introduced its reimagined Omega collection of laminate kitchen worktops, opening doors for kitchen installers to offer accessible luxury kitchen design to a variety of customers.

The reinvented Omega range boasts 25 decors available in a variety of sizes to maximise design flexibility and freedom. The collection combines performance with contemporary designs that replicate not just the aesthetics and texture of natural materials but the durability too. Made to echo the impression of real wood, marble and stone finishes, with a true square edge or slight curve, the range has been designed to cater to a customer’s individual needs. Luxury meets accessibility with four premium finishes including the metallic emulating ‘Brushed Bronze’ and three anti-fingerprint ‘Touch’ surfaces, on which micro-scratches are repairable whilst also being easy to clean.

Unlike stone or marble, no complex care routine is required to maintain Omega worksurfaces once fitted. Marks can easily be wiped away with a damp cloth and mild detergent to keep the surface spotless and looking its best for years to come.

The antibacterial protection available as standard on all

designs in the collection serves to slow down bacteria growth by up to 99.9% for the lifetime of the surface, making it a great family kitchen solution for installers to offer.

Elliott Fairlie, Product Leader at Bushboard, said: “When reimagining the Omega range, our goal was to create a laminate worktop collection that could be used to create a luxury, standout centrepiece to any kitchen, without the weighty price tag, thus giving installers the opportunity to offer this level of luxury to all.

“The new range has something to suit everyone, from timeless oak of varying shades and natural stones to cool marble tones with realistic veining. By offering an Omega laminate worksurface, fitters can ensure a customer’s chosen finish can be extended across the entire kitchen space with the matching splashbacks and upstands also available.

“The reimagined collection showcases our commitment to providing homeowners with products that offer an alternative to traditional kitchen materials through innovative concepts and designs, that not only look sleek and beautiful but stand the test of time too.”

The Omega range offers a versatile array of sizes making it perfect for a variety of kitchen sizes in both renovated and

pre-existing spaces. 17 of the worksurfaces are available in a 38mm post formed or square edge silhouette, four are available in 22mm square edge and the remaining four offer both sizing options. Omega offers a mix of 3m and 4.1m worktops and a variety of widths for maximum design freedom. The Omega collection can be easily cut, drilled and shaped to fit required measurements, with no specialist tools required.

Q &A with

Steve Adamson

In every issue, we meet members of the BiKBBI team for a quick-fire questionnaire. This time, we speak to Steve Adamson, Operations Manager, about his job and the important tasks that lay ahead.

to see that the staff at BiKBBI really do make the difference. Everyone works so hard to deliver a superior service to all of our stakeholders. Working within a business that prides itself on high standards means that everyone strives to exceed expectations and over deliver which is very rewarding.

Tell us something most people might not know about you?

Please tell us about your role at BiKBBI

I recently joined BiKBBI as Operations Manager, overseeing and managing the day-to-day operational activities across all areas of the business to ensure maximum productivity, efficiency and to ensure the smooth running of BiKBBI’s Head Office functions.

What did you do before joining BiKBBI?

The KBB sector is very new to me, having previously worked predominantly in the sports and event management industry and latterly the transportation sector.

My most notable role was General Manager at Charlton Athletic Women’s Football Club, focusing on the set up and growth of the women’s team. I am very passionate about growing and improving inclusivity within women’s sports and therefore I am extremely proud to have played

a part in the transformation of the women’s game to a full time, multi-million pound industry, and to have worked on FA projects which contributed to the Lionesses European Championship victory at Wembley.

What do you find most rewarding about your role?

I’ve always been someone who thrives on a challenge. The KBB industry is at such a critical point and the work that we do really does have an impact on the future of the sector – from closing the skills gap to improving education and standards. It’s great to work with a wide range of stakeholders within the industry, collaborating to drive positive change.

What makes BiKBBI different from other places you’ve worked?

From the short time I have been with the organisation, it is clear

I had a very brief career working within the television industry. I initially studied Digital Television at university with the intention to work within the film and television industry. For various reasons I ended up working in sport and then progressed into projects and operations.

And finally, what are you working on currently?

I am working on many projects currently but the standout for me is the BiKBBI Education Steering Committee. Growing both apprenticeships and the CPD provision has been a long-standing challenge for the industry, and it’s fantastic that we have a committee of leading experts within both the KBB and education sectors working on building a more sustainable workforce for the future.

Over 450 exhibitors welcomed 15,000 visitors across the three days of the recent exhibition on all things installation…

STRONG Creating bonds

No strangers to the event, CT1’s stand at InstallerSHOW 2023 once again drew the crowds this year. Their space aimed to reveal to installers everything that the CT1 experts are bringing to the table, and ultimately their own toolboxes

CT1 is known for its wide range of sealant and adhesive products, and its stand generated a huge buzz, crowds and excitement at InstallerSHOW 2023, the UK’s biggest plumbing, heating and electrical trade show recently held in the NEC, Birmingham.

WHO USES CT1?

CT1, with its unique ‘TRIBRID®’ Technology, replaces all mastic, wood and PU adhesives, silicone, sanitary, acrylic and butyl rubber sealants in just one product. Eliminating the need for additional fixings, its anti-bacterial and fungus properties, long life expectancy and supreme flexibility qualities are just a few reasons why CT1 is the product of choice for trades in every sector of the construction industry including builders, roofing contractors, joiners, tilers, plumbers, electrician, window suppliers, kitchen fitters, bedroom and bathroom installers as well as specialist facilities management and fit-out companies.

‘GRAB EXTREME’ NATIONAL GRAND FINAL

CT1 tested its Power Grab ‘n’ Bond adhesive to the max with The National Final of the ‘Grab Extreme’ Challenge. Power Grab ‘n’ Bond is the ultimate grab adhesive, designed and created for facades and installations where heavy-duty vertical bonding, without mechanical fixings, is required. Contestants had to ‘hang in there’ longer than their peers and industry colleagues from two grouting floats bonded overhead only by the strength of Power Grab ‘n’ Bond.

Congratulations to Daniel Clarke who achieved an amazing time of 3 minutes and 26 seconds to win Milwaukee Tool Sets and CT1 Products.

CT1 is Proudly Made in Britain

CT1 is proudly Made in Britain with British design, British technology and British manufacturing. New research points to a rise in home improvement plans

Almost half of UK homeowners (45%) are planning home improvements within the next two years according to new research by manufacturer and distributor Häfele.

Interior decorating (29%), a new kitchen (23%) and bathroom renovations (21.4%) were the top choices for those planning home improvement works, with new flooring (21%) and new doors (15%) also making the top five. Other planned home improvements include external works like roofing, gutters and external paintwork (14%), new windows (13%), adding or upgrading a downstairs toilet (10%), fitting a new boiler (10%) or new lighting (9%).

One in ten respondents said the cost and difficulty of buying and selling will see them actively put off plans to move in favour of home improvements and over a third (36%) of all respondents are not considering a move but have plans to upgrade their home.

The initial findings of the Häfele UK report suggest that

despite a challenging start to the year for many business in the home improvements sector, factors such as a reduction in energy pricing may be allowing homeowners to invest in their homes once again. Natalie Davenport, Head of Marketing at Häfele UK, said: “During Covid lockdowns, there was a huge spike in home improvement projects of all scales and sizes, but more recent economic circumstances have put many plans on hold. In our survey of 2,000 UK homeowners, however, there are indications that half of households plan to spend on their current property in the coming years.

“The kitchen is a particular area that homeowners are looking to improve, especially as our research found that one

in ten people do not like their current kitchen.”

The 2023 ‘Functional Spaces: Homes for Living’ research builds on a similar study conducted in 2022 by Häfele that explored the impact of kitchen design on wellbeing and mental health. This year’s survey uncovered that 81% of homeowners feel they would have an improved quality of life if the biggest issues in their kitchen were resolved – a stark increase of 16% versus the company’s 2022 findings.

Delving into what homeowners most dislike about their kitchen, not enough storage was the most common factor, chosen by 28% of those surveyed. Size was an issue for a quarter of respondents who selected ‘too small’ as their biggest issue. Cluttered worktops (19%), damaged and tired kitchen cabinets (17%) and inaccessible cupboards and shelving (15%) were also frequent problems.

bikbbi.org.uk 58
Home Improvements

A quarter of consumers selected a style overhaul as the motivator for why they would update or have updated their kitchen. Quality improvements (23%) and lack of storage (19%) were second and third on the list.

Davenport added: “The importance homeowners place on their kitchen remains strong and consumers are increasingly aware of the impact their home and its design and function have on their daily lives. Our upcoming report sharing more of the findings will outline a multitude of insights that will help those involved in all aspects of home design to create better spaces for the consumer, as well as understand their new priorities and drivers when it comes to purchasing and decision making.”

Häfele’s Functional Spaces: Homes for Living report will be available in full later this summer. Visit hafele.co.uk for updates.

Let that sink in

The sink space is an essential component of any kitchen, serving as a focal point and a functional area. With such a diverse range of sink options and worksurfaces available in the market, Jeanette Ward, Communications Manager at Franke, offers some handy tips on what goes with what, as well as some other things to consider when choosing a sink.

Choice of worksurface materials

With so much choice around, knowing what sink goes what goes with what worksurface can be bewildering for many homeowners. This is where installers can share their knowledge to avoid any issues further down the line.

Inset sinks not only offer the benefits of versatile design and easy installation, they also offer seamless integration into any worksurface material, including laminate, granite, quartz, or

solid surfaces, as long as they are sealed correctly to give a watertight finish.

Slimtop / flushmount sinks, where the sink and worksurface material blend seamlessly into each other on the horizontal plane, are also compatible with any worksurface. They do, however, require extra care for detail by the installer to achieve a high-end look.

Undermount sinks offer a streamlined style with smooth, uninterrupted kitchen surfaces, which is why they’re the

most popular choice among consumers. They can be installed into any worksurface except laminate as water can get into the chipboard core and ruin the worktop. Timber also needs ongoing care to be waterproofed so is a less ideal choice.

Sink models

When choosing a sink model, it really comes down to the homeowner’s personal preferences and how they intend to use the sink, as well

bikbbi.org.uk 61
Franke’s new Mythos Masterpiece BXM 210/110-68 premium coloured metallic sink in Copper Kitchen sinks

as the kitchen layout and size. Here are some things installers might want to point out to their customers about the three most popular bowl types.

Single Bowl:

This is a simple and spaceefficient option, suitable for smaller kitchens or for homeowners who prefer a minimalist design. We would recommend that they choose as large and deep bowl as the cabinets will accommodate to allow plenty of space for washing up larger items. A single bowl can fit in a small cabinet of 500mm or larger.

One and a half bowl:

Consisting of a larger bowl and a smaller half-size bowl, this style offers the advantage of a dedicated space for food preparation, or disposing of waste, leaving the main bowl free for the washing up. You will need a minimum 600mm cabinet size.

Double Bowl:

These are the ultimate choice in spacious kitchens that allow for a dedicated sink run with ample worktop space on either side. As well as offering design kudos and a pleasing symmetrical aesthetic, they are incredibly versatile, allowing for multitasking such as washing dishes on one side and rinsing or food preparation on the other. Recommend that they are

paired with a tap that can swivel 360° with a flexible hose that can rinse down both sinks with ease. Bear in mind they will need a cabinet of at least 800mm.

‘Max up’ the sink space

It’s good advice to recommend that customers invest in a Waste Disposal Unit (WDU) and high-quality accessories such as strainer bowls and chopping boards to ‘max up’ the sink space and allow the area to flex for multiple tasks, from food preparation to removing waste and doing the washing up. This is especially beneficial in smaller kitchens and those with single bowl sinks that need to work harder.

Innovative technologies

Sinks have come a long way and now incorporate additional features, technologies and design elements that can meet a very wide range of needs. For example, our new Maris Quiet Bowl sink features our exclusive Quiet Pad System which lowers sound by 20dB a reduction of 25% versus standard when rinsing and dishwashing, so for homeowners with open plan kitchens where noise reduction is important, it offers an ideal solution. For design conscious customers who want to make a statement with their sink choice, our new Mythos Masterpiece premium coloured metallic sink collection could be one to recommend. It features Franke’s exclusive F-Inox Technology which assures an exceptionally

hardwearing and long-lasting finish, with hydrophobic and oleophobic properties that pool water like liquid mercury and keep fingerprints and grease marks at bay. These qualities set it apart from other coloured metallic sinks.

Aftersales peace of mind

The sink is a long-term investment for the home which you expect to last for many years to come. Installers should suggest their customers choose a brand that offers a lifetime guarantee and the assurance of a sound after-sales service. All Franke sinks offer the peace of mind of a 50-year guarantee against manufacturing defects when installed correctly in line with the installation instructions. By choosing a sink with a solid guarantee, your customers will protect their investment and will be assured that if any problems arise, they will be taken care of.

Apprenticeships

for all ages can help solve the skills gap

Simon Acres, Managing Director at training and recruitment consultancy Simon Acres Group, explains why he has taken on an apprenticeship himself, and how the industry could benefit if more installers considered apprenticeships for older staff, not just young people

As a vocal supporter of apprenticeships, I am proud to practice what I preach by becoming an apprentice myself. I have embarked on a level 3 Independent Assessor qualification with specialist end-point assessment organisation, Achieve & Partners. On completion of this apprenticeship, I will be qualified to end point assess standards for Trade Supplier L2, Fitted Furniture Design Technician L3 and Fitted Furniture Installer L2.

Working with merchants and KBB businesses in the Simon Acres business gives me an insight into how they operate and what the challenges and barriers to growth are. One of the most common issues is the skills shortage and lack of new entrants into the industry.

Simon Acres Group has been championing apprenticeships and working with others to promote the benefits of the system both to employers and those being employed. One message that we have been addressing is that whilst it is good to bring young people into an industry, with the fresh ideas they can bring, it is also worthwhile to use apprenticeship programmes to up-skill existing staff.

Apprenticeships are available for a huge range of business and practical skills, creating opportunities for staff at any level to benefit. It is interesting that in the UK, apprenticeship

programmes are regarded as something for young people. In the US, where we also do a lot of work, this is not the case and staff of any age are encouraged to further their careers by taking on an apprenticeship.

For the employer, this is a win, win situation. They have a happy and motivated employee that can see career progression, they are also saving money by promoting from within, and ensuring no loss in production because of lack of staff. In addition, staff are being trained on the job, with a mix of study and practical work, so they can be trained to the standard that business requires and receive a recognised qualification.

If other businesses could take up the challenge and use actions

rather than words it would have a huge positive impact. We need a dramatic stepchange to encourage everyone to play a part to promote this way of learning as a viable and respected option, to attract more apprentices and counter the serious skills crisis we face. Everyone recognises that we have an ageing workforce, with the number of qualified installers falling. This is creating a substantial skills gap that will hamper the growth of a sustainable and well qualified workforce for the future.

Apprentices can become a valuable part of the workforce, supporting growth, and when they stay and become long term employees, they become role models for others to follow. Without enough role models working in businesses, it will be difficult to gain the momentum required.

There are many misconceptions around apprentices that deter business owners from taking them on board. Part of the work I have been doing with Simon Acres Group is to dispel these myths and show that it is not complicated or expensive. There is a growth in providers and opportunities, and I hope that my own apprenticeship journey will encourage others to access this vital tool and address the very serious skills gap we face.

Security? It’s in our DNA

Protecting electrical tools and equipment from theft.

Tools and equipment are frequently stolen from job sites, from construction sites, and from vans.

Not only do tools and equipment represent large nancial investments that often costs hundreds – if not thousands – of pounds, but without them many tradesmen are unable to earn a living.

To ward against this type of crime, SelectaDNA is a theft prevention solution that marks and protects tools and equipment with a unique synthetic DNA liquid.

SelectaDNA is a huge deterrent because criminals fear DNA evidence more than anything else.

Stylish bathroom walls: Step-by-step

Quick and easy to fit, wall panelling can create a stylish look in shower enclosures or over baths without the time and hassle that’s associated with tiling. Steph Harris, Product Manager at Showerwall, takes us through how to fit its Laminate Collection wall panelling system in an ‘over the bath’ setting

Showerwall’s Laminate panels are available in either square edge or Proclick options. Proclick technology is a mechanical tongue and groove system that provides seamless, almost invisible joints. Using the relevant profiles, along with patented Sureseal technology, which prevents silicone breakdown, discolouration and mould, it provides a watertight wall panelling system. Showerwall’s Proclick system can be installed over the bath by following these simple steps…

STEP 1

– Prepare your tools and walls

Typically for this installation you will need a 1200mm and 600mm Proclick panel to complete the length of the bath; other panels will also be required depending on the area or size of the installation.

Tools you will need include: a tape measure, 1200mm spirit level, sealant gun, suction cups, masking tape, blade and pencil, jigsaw, power drill, hand saw,

circular saw, mitre block and metal saws. Ear protection is also recommended.

The wall panels can be fixed to an existing wall or directly over tiles, providing the surface is flat and plumb. If the walls are not flat, then treated battens must be used to install the panels.

STEP 2

– Check your work area

Before undertaking the installation, ensure that all walls are sound, plumb, completely dry, dust free and clean before applying the Showerwall panels. Also check the level of your bath or shower tray.

STEP 3

– Begin by installing Sureseal Showerwall’s Sureseal is a fourpart system for installations and provides a watertight finish at the base of the panel. To install Sureseal, first measure the length and width of the bath and cut the strips to the appropriate

size. Seal the strip to the bath ledge using Showerwall silicone sealant.

STEP 4

– Measure and cut panels to size Showerwall panels may require cutting before installation, so ensure the cutting line is measured and marked before any alterations are made. Take measurements for the height and width of the panel, measuring from Nib A to the ceiling. Remove the protective film from the panel. Then mark and cut the panel to the correct height and width with a hand saw, circular saw or jigsaw, décor side up to avoid chipping. Ensure any holes for pipes or showerheads are made at this point.

STEP 5

– Fix the trims and first panel

Fix the internal corner trim to the wall using Showerwall adhesive, ensuring this is level. Measure the width of the wall, allowing 15mm for the corner of the trim

and cut the width accordingly. Next, fit the end cap directly to the panel using the sealant. Apply sealant in the channel of the Sureseal strip and corner trim, and apply 6mm beads of adhesive to the walls in zig-zag lines.

To fix the first panel, ensure the bottom edge drops fully into the Sureseal base channel and slide it into the internal corner trim profile. Remove excess sealant from the front edge of the Sureseal strip, using the Showerwall sealant profiler.

STEP 6

– Fix panels two and three Cut the second panel, removing the tongue edge to fit into the trim. Then cut to size and repeat the sealant and adhesive instructions from the first panel. You can use suction cups if required to fit your second panel. Ensure the panel is slid neatly into the corner trim and then fix to the wall.

For the third panel, measure from the second panel edge to the wall, remembering to remove the 15mm for the corner trim. When cutting panel three, ensure the measurement is taken from the panel edge and not the tongue profile. Fix the corner trim to the cut panel edge using sealant. Apply a small bead of sealant to the shoulder of the tongue edge and then locate the tongue edge into the groove edge of panel two at a shallow angle to the wall. Finally rotate the panel towards the wall, making sure the tongue is sitting correctly in the groove and then fix to the wall, removing any excess sealant. The corner trim is now in place.

STEP 7

– Fit the final panel Attach the end cap directly to the panel again using sealant. Apply sealant and adhesive to the wall and seal as before. Next, locate

panel four neatly into the corner trim before fixing to the wall. Finally, seal the expansion gap at the ceiling edge to ensure it is watertight. Fill any holes made for pipes or showerheads with sealant, before sealing around the fixtures and fittings. Leave for 24 hours for the sealant and adhesive to set, and it is ready to use.

Once complete you will have a hard-wearing watertight system with a 30-year customer guarantee.
