BiKBBI takes the talking points to InstallerSHOW 2024

In this issue…

Welcome to the Summer issue of The Installer. Once again, we’ve rounded up a whole array of updates from across the sector, including some of the very latest new products from key kitchen & bathroom brands, many of which also share their ideas for helping installers maximise the speed and quality of their work.

We reflect on a couple of great events which have taken place since the last issue. Firstly, there’s a look back at the InstallerSHOW, a vibrantly busy exhibition at which BiKBBI was at the centre of the action. Hear about some of the highlights on page 14.

Buying group MHK also held its members AGM recently, with a programme of speakers that included BiKBBI’s very own Damian Walters. See our report on page 26 to hear some of the pertinent topics that were covered during the course of this insightful day.

There is also an update on the hugely damaging problem of tool theft. We hear about efforts from campaign group Trades United to bring this major issue to the attention of politicians and seek greater protection for tradespeople and their essential tools.

We hope you enjoy this edition of The Installer. As ever, please do get in touch with your feedback.

Welcome…

As we head towards the Autumn and look back on the last few months, there is no doubt that there’s been a lot of activity since the last issue, with a general election and change of government, plus a summer packed with sport.

It’s also been an active time for the industry and, of course, the institute. June saw BiKBBI make its debut at InstallerSHOW, with the introduction of a new Installer Kitchens & Bathrooms zone. Over 20,000 visitors and 650 exhibitors came together at Birmingham’s NEC to create a record-breaking event. Many of BiKBBI’s partners were there, and we took the opportunity to launch BiKBBI’s Funding the Future of Installation initiative, in association with Blum UK.

Since the last issue, we’ve also welcomed four new corporate sponsors – SycamoreLED, Mira Showers, Waterline and Crown Imperial – as well as establishing a new partnership with the Worktop Fabricators Federation. You can read more about all of our new partners starting on page 6.

As we look ahead, work has begun on our 2025 Annual Conference and the BiKBBI Awards – check out page 11 for more information on key dates for awards entries.

Happy reading!.

BiKBBI partners with WFF to support KBB installers and promote best practice for surfaces

The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installation (BiKBBI) has announced the formation of a strategic partnership with the Worktop Fabricators Federation (WFF), a non-profit organisation representing businesses using industrial fabrication methods to manufacture large format slabs for surfaces, made from natural stone and similar man-made materials.

Launched in 2020, the Federation’s objectives and goals are to promote professionalism across the surfaces and stone masonry industries, including the promotion of good working practices and policies for health & safety in the workplace, as well as being a unified representative voice for fabricators on matters of industry-wide importance.

As part of the newly formed relationship, BiKBBI will work closely with WFF to provide education, improve standards, nurture collaboration and provide guidance to KBB installers.

Damian Walters, BiKBBI CEO, said: “KBB installation

is a multi-skilled trade with many areas of specialism. The work that BiKBBI does to support installation businesses and drive positive change is reliant on strong relationships with organisations representing all areas of the sector. Surfaces and stone masonry are a significant element of kitchen and bathroom installation, and we are in no doubt that the newly formed relationship with the WFF will deliver significant benefits for both BiKBBI registered installers, the wider installation sector and the worktop fabrication industry.”

InstallerSHOW

Record-breaking raises the bar again

Firmly established as the must-visit event in the industry’s exhibition calendar, InstallerSHOW has again exceeded all expectations as a record number of visitors flocked to the NEC Birmingham.

The enhanced format of this year’s show gave over 20,000 professionals from the heat, water, air and energy space access to more than 300 speakers and 650 exhibitors across two halls and 40,000m2 of floorspace.

The 10 live content theatres blended practical demonstrations of the latest product innovations with expert insights into the technical, legislative, and aspirational developments which are shaping the journey to Net Zero in the UK and beyond.

Alongside returning favourites such as Solar Innovations and the elemental Housing Hub, a raft of attractions made their InstallerSHOW debut – from Installer Kitchens & Bathrooms, with its focus on connecting the supply chain in a seamless and meaningful way, to InstallerTRADES, which gave genuine tradespeople the opportunity to share their views on tools and workwear in an authentic peer-to-peer environment.

Also appearing for the first time,

the elemental Arena offered an opportunity to hear from heavyweight speakers such as Deborah Meaden, Greg Jackson and Chris Skidmore – while the new Climate Solutions Theatre hosted a series of events to mark World Refrigeration Day as well as spotlighting the experiences of women in the industry.

As ever, the InstallerPLAZA was the heartbeat of the event, with a varied programme which took in big names such as Kevin McCloud as well as giving a voice to installers who work at the coalface every day.

It was also the venue for Vaillant’s 150th birthday party, featuring bespoke cocktails, specially commissioned cakes, and live gig from The Hare Raisers.

Reflecting on InstallerSHOW 2024, Managing Director Mike Costain said: “The buzz around the NEC surpassed anything we’ve experienced previously, which is testament to the attitude of our entire community.

returning visitors and exhibitors immersing themselves in the spirit of InstallerSHOW and embracing the belief that knowledge and fun can go hand in hand. Work has already begun on laying the foundations for an even bigger and better InstallerSHOW in 2025.”

What sets Sensio apart: a superior choice for installers

When it comes to kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom lighting, choosing the right supplier can make all the difference. Dr Fariz Khellaf, Technical Director at Sensio, explains the three key reasons why the lighting brand is the superior choice for installers…

Designed in the UK: Innovation at Its Best

One of Sensio’s standout features is our in-house design team based in the UK. This team of dedicated professionals works tirelessly to create innovative lighting solutions that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Here’s why our UK-based design team makes a difference:

• Cutting-Edge Design: By having our design team in-house, we ensure that every product is crafted with precision and creativity. Our designers are at the forefront of the latest trends, allowing us to bring unique and stylish lighting options to the market.

• Quality Control: With our design and development processes under one roof, we maintain strict quality control, ensuring that every product meets our high standards before it reaches you.

5-Year Guarantee: Confidence in Quality

At Sensio, we believe in the quality and durability of our products, which is why we offer a comprehensive 5-year guarantee on all our lighting solutions. This guarantee is a testament to our commitment to excellence and

provides several benefits:

• Peace of Mind: Installers can confidently recommend and install Sensio products, knowing that they are backed by a solid warranty. This assurance enhances your reputation and builds trust with your clients.

• Longevity: Our products are designed to last, with a typical working lifespan of up to 50,000 hours. This means fewer replacements and repairs, saving time and money in the long run.

24V vs. 12V Systems: Efficiency and Performance

Sensio’s commitment to innovation is evident in our preference for 24V lighting systems over the more commonly used 12V systems. Here’s why 24V systems are superior:

• Cooler Operation: 24V systems dissipate less heat, which not only extends the lifespan of the lights but also enhances safety during installation and use.

• Reduced Voltage Drop: With 24V systems, there is minimal loss of power or brightness over longer distances, ensuring consistent illumination throughout the space.

• Higher Efficiency: 24V systems are up to 75% more efficient

than 12V systems. They consume less current for the same wattage, making them more energy-efficient and costeffective in the long run.

Switched-on thinking

Choosing Sensio means opting for a company that stands out in design, quality, and innovation. Our UK-based in-house design team ensures top-tier products, our 5-year guarantee provides peace of mind, and our 24V systems offer superior efficiency and performance. For installers of kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms, Sensio is the clear choice for excellence in lighting solutions.

Jamie McLaren, Business Development Manager, Lighting at Häfele UK, explains how innovative plug-and-play lighting systems can enable installers to create a wow factor with ease.

Lighting is a powerful tool. It can balance room dimensions, create better spatial orientation and highlight key features.

But as well as affecting how things look, it impacts how we feel, too. While traditionally, lighting might’ve been the job of an electrician or tackled in design by a kitchen planner, innovative plug-and-play systems make it a simple added extra that installers can offer to their customers.

The importance of lighting

In our poll of 2000 UK homeowners conducted last year by Censuswide, lighting –particularly built-in cabinet lighting and layered kitchen lighting – was in the top ten most popular and desired items in the kitchen, and it’s clear why.

“With innovative systems readily available, lighting doesn’t need to be challenging or something to outsource”

Lighting doesn’t just illuminate a space; it can shape a kitchen or set a mood. Accent lighting highlights specific features within a room, for example, while spotlights focus the eyes on a specific area, highlighting interesting objects or acting as pathfinders.

Task lighting – often in strip form – is ideal for food preparation areas or, if a kitchen is used as a home office, for work areas. Meanwhile ambient lighting helps achieve a specific mood and can make a space feel bigger or cosier.

Easy does it

Traditionally, lighting installation was something that kitchen fitters

Shedding a Light on Lighting

would need to subcontract to an electrician, but with developments in LED lighting systems, that’s no longer necessary.

Innovative systems like our Loox LED lighting are designed to install effortlessly. Available as a 12v or 24v system as required, all the elements within the system are colour-coded, with yellow for 12v and green for 24v, making it easy to identify and distinguish.

The system is also flexible and scalable in its design, enabling installers to create options that range from the simple to the complex based on the customers’

needs. In its simplest form, the system has just a mains lead that powers the driver, lights that plug into the driver and then a furniture switch with on-and-off functionality. The next tier up is mains and driver, plus a distributor, allowing multiple layers and greater control of each light.

For installers wanting more complex options, the system can then be scaled up to feature smart controls, with furniture switches or app controls to create programmes for individual lights, areas, tasks, and times of the day.

These innovative LED systems

on Lighting

also offer flexibility in light options. There is a range of downlights with recessed, surface and lowprofile surface products, and the collection can also be paired with sensor switches.

There are also plinth lights with three different colour bezels, which are also available in tuneable white, plus ribbon options with profile, recessed and surface mount designs. For ultimate flexibility, we’ve also created Flex light that pairs with our plug-and-play system.

A silicon-based ribbon, Flex light can be bent to almost any

angle and radius, making it ideal for plinths, handleless cabinets, worktops, and splashbacks.

Supporting lighting design

With innovative systems readily available, lighting doesn’t need to be challenging or something to outsource.

What’s more, Häfele also provides a free Lighting Design Service where its team of designers can create bespoke lighting layouts.

MHK pledges backing through the tough

‘Our goal is to support you’, says MHK Group CEO to members at 2024 AGM

backing times

MHK brought together suppliers, retailers and industry partners at its 2024 Annual General Meeting held at The Belfry in Sutton Coldfield in July. The conference was opened by MHK Group CEO, Volker Klodwig who addressed members in a speech that praised them for their entrepreneurial resilience through recent economic struggles.

“Personally, I am convinced that when the market is slow, it is the right time to prepare everything on deck to reach the next goal when the wind picks up,” he said. “Waiting is not an option. Those who want to step out of the economic slipstream must be active, must shape, must invest. Therefore, our goal is to support you in the market and differentiate you from the competition. Our investment power as a group and our innovative products and solutions help us shape markets.”

Klodwig also detailed in his speech how the UK is a major focus for the group as it continues to grow

and that MHK’s overall growth in the last 12 months compensates for negative market effects.

The international buying group for the kbb sector welcomed many attendees from across the UK, including current members, prospective members, major kbb suppliers, industry partners and special guest speakers who all met to engage in debate and discussion around key industry topics. The end of the conference was marked by a gala dinner event and awards ceremony celebrating the best in kitchen and bathroom design.

David Morris, Sales Director for MHK, said: “It is now widely understood that MHK helps retailers access the best prices and payment terms. But that is really just the tip of the iceberg. We are a community that has the ‘ear’ of the biggest partners and suppliers in the kbb industry, and I am delighted that so many of our supplier and retailer members joined us for this major networking event.”

Damian Walters, CEO BiKBBI, speaking at the MHK buying group’s UK AGM

A partnership for futureproofing

As part of MHK’s vision to work more closely with installers in the UK, it has taken a proactive approach to bridge the gap with kitchen retailers. In Germany, MHK aims to be a pioneer in the professional development of the installation industry with its own training academy, the MHK Europa Akademie, in Dreieich.

It ultimately aims to bring this holistic view to the UK and in July, the group celebrates its first full year of corporate sponsorship of the British Institute of KBB Installation (BiKBBI).

At this year’s AGM Damian Walters, CEO of The BiKBBI explained how retailers and suppliers must come together to futureproof the industry.

Speaking after the event, Walters said: “Right now, MHK is the only buying group to see the potential in supporting the mission to bring installers and retailers closer together.

The two cannot exist without each other and MHK is leading the way in supporting collaborative efforts. What’s more, they are appealing to the entrepreneurial spirit of installers – the majority of whom are self-

employed – and looking to scale and future-proof their business. There is a lot that the installer industry can learn from their kbb retail members.”

Scope for increasing consumer budgets

According to Memuna Ismail, Senior Designer/Kitchen Showroom Manager, Blackburn Tile Centre, who attended and spoke on a panel at the event: “Consumers are often willing to increase their budgets for the right design. Begin by finding options within their budget to meet their brief, but from there you can enhance the design and add value by

giving them their ‘wow’ moment.”

Joining Memuna, the retailers – including Shanti Panchani (Founder and Design Director of The Kitchen Consultancy), Paul Wheeler (Owner of Kitchen Lifestyles), and Torben Schmid (Founder and Director of Torben Schmid Kitchens) – discussed what they are seeing in the market right now and where there is opportunity to maximise margin by offering the best service. Pertinent discussion points included how to hone your USP as a designer and how to approach the topic of budget with nervous clients.

Representatives from five major suppliers including Smeg, Asko, Stone Sense, Bauformat and Alku, also took to the stage to discuss the latest innovations across appliances, worktops and cabinetry to help retailers make an impact on consumers.

The conference agenda was concluded with an inspiring motivational talk from Alison Edgar MBE whose captivating presentation offered numerous valuable approaches on how to successfully adapt and embrace change.

Celebrating success

At the end of the conference, a gala dinner took place in which independently judged awards were presented, recognising retailers for their impactful kitchen designs. The event rounded off a series

Winners of MHK UK’s 2024 Golden Triangle Awards:

• Best kitchen design under £25,000 –Shanti Panchani, Kitchen Consultancy, London

• Best kitchen design between £25,000 and £60,000 –Shaun Lelane, Audus kitchens

• Best kitchen design over £60,000 –Shaun Lelane, Audus kitchens

• Best new showroom award –Kitchen Lifestyles Ferndown

of AGMs across Europe which started in MHK’s home market of Germany followed by The Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, France and Belgium in which more than 75% of MHK’s 4,400 members convened

in person. This year MHK also reported the largest overall increase in membership in Europe since the company began.

Meets SubstanceStyle

The latest generation of kitchen splashbacks provides installers with the chance to offer a versatile product that is ideal for any project, regardless of their customers’ budgets. But what are the key features to look out for when exploring the product category? Bekki Griffiths, Senior Marketing Communications Manager at Bushboard, explains.

It doesn’t seem that long ago when the kitchen splashback was synonymous with tiles and the drawbacks that came with them –a lengthy installation process and the need for grouting to name two.

With the introduction of Bushboard’s innovative range of Alloy aluminium splashbacks, however, it’s possible to deliver

maximum impact in minimal time, thanks to the following core features:

Installation simplicity

Installers have a major role to play in achieving the desired finish for any kitchen project, which is why it’s important that the products they are working with are a breeze to cut and fit without the need for a whole host of specialist tools. Available in four standard sizes, Alloy can be easily cut to size with basic woodworking tools and then applied to walls using a professional-grade adhesive. This helps to avoid the time-consuming tasks of shaping, cutting, and grouting that are often associated with tiled splashbacks.

Alloy can also be installed directly onto a pre-existing surface or on top of tiles with little preparation required, ensuring a hassle-free process from start to finish. What’s more, this can all be performed on-site – simply cut, stick, and fit. Alloy splashbacks are covered by a lifetime guarantee when fitted in accordance with Bushboard’s installation instructions, adding that extra peace of mind to the purchase decision.

Functionality at its finest

Manufactured from a fire-resistant aluminium composite panel, each and every Alloy splashback is safe for a kitchen’s hot zone, all while guaranteeing that all important desired look.

With no need for grout, it’s also extremely easy to keep Alloy splashbacks looking clean and fresh. All that’s needed is a quick wipe down with a damp cloth, meaning homeowners can forget about the labour-intensive process of dealing with stained, grimy or cracked grout.

Striking in appearance

Promising to add a designertouch to any kitchen, Alloy offers customers a choice of 10 décors, inspired by modern patterns and natural materials, including stone, marble and woods.

Alloy offers customers a choice of 10 décors, inspired by modern patterns and natural materials, including stone, marble and woodss with 16 trendowners to easily add the feel of a painted feature wall, but with all the benefits this innovative tile-alternative brings. Waste

Disposal Units

With all households generating food waste, from single-person dwellings to large family homes, Waste Disposal Units (WDUs) offer an efficient way to reduce the amount going into the bin and are a lowcost addition to any sink installation.

Convenient, hygienic, and spacesaving, they tick all the boxes for greener home solutions. Franke’s brand new Elite Slimline range offers a choice of four models that are compact in design but pack a powerful punch when it comes to performance.

Here’s why integrating a WDU into your installations is a smart choice:

Easy installation

One of the benefits of the Elite Slimline range is its ease of installation. Each unit fits all Franke sinks with a 3½” waste hole and features a straightforward 3-bolt mounting system.

Installation takes between 20-30 minutes and the process is as simple as fitting a sink, involving connecting the unit to the sink waste and plugging it into a standard 13-amp socket.

– why every sink should have one

Franke supports installers with comprehensive instructions and YouTube videos, ensuring the process is smooth and efficient. Plus, their dedicated Consumer Care team is always ready to assist with any queries.

Environmental benefits

With the growing emphasis on sustainability, WDUs offer an e asy eco-friendly way to reduce kitchen waste.

Franke’s Elite Slimline models liquify food scraps and waste into fine particles that are easily flushed through the plumbing

system. They effectively dispose of a variety of organic waste – fruit and veg peelings, small bones, coffee grounds, and more –significantly cutting down on the waste that goes to landfill by as much as 50%.

More and more councils across the UK are making charges for disposal of green waste. Homeowners can keep these charges down by investing in a WDU and it will pay for itself easily in a few years.

Streamlined and space efficient

Franke’s Elite Slimline WDUs stand out with their sleek, compact design that fits easily under the sink, leaving space for other things. Available in four models – Slim 50, Slim 75, Slim 100, and Slim 125 – these units maximise space efficiency. They also reduce the need for bulky waste bins, making them perfect

for more compact kitchens where every inch counts. Homeowners can optimise cupboard space and maintain a cleaner, more organised kitchen through quick and efficient disposal of everyday waste.

Convenient and hygienic WDUs offer exceptional convenience by streamlining kitchen cleanup. They swiftly handle food waste, eliminating the need for multiple bins and reducing odours and germs to keep kitchens cleaner and more hygienic.

Franke’s Elite Slimline units are equipped with high-flow splash guards and Twist Force technology to prevent jamming, while Sound Soft technology ensures quieter operation. For added safety, the Slim 100 and Slim 125 models feature a magnetic rim to prevent cutlery and other items being accidently dropped into the unit,

making them a user-friendly and reliable choice for any kitchen.

High-performing and durable

Each model in the Elite Slimline range is equipped with a permanent magnetic motor that delivers high speeds and exceptional torque. The four models offer varying horsepower and speeds to meet different household needs. For peace of mind, all models come with a 10year guarantee.

As the demand for eco-friendly home solutions continues to grow, WDUs offer both installers and homeowners a practical, reliable way to enhance kitchen hygiene, save space, and support environmental efforts. It’s clear to see why every sink should have one.

Taking Action to Protect Tools

Tradespeople took their concerns over tool theft to Westminster recently with an organised rally aimed to raise awareness of this growing scourge of stolen property from vans.

With tool theft reaching epidemic proportions, a campaign was launched to raise awareness of the problem, culminating in a van rally outside the Houses of Parliament aimed at forcing MPs to take action to help restrict the trade in stolen goods.

Campaign group Trades United organised the rally at Parliament Square in Westminster. Starting from Brent Cross in North London, tradespeople from across the UK descended upon Central London to demand stricter enforcement of existing laws and greater accountability for venues that facilitate the resale of stolen tools at events such as car boot sales and markets.

The gathered rally involved a ‘go slow’ convoy demonstration, driving around the area for two hours as part of efforts to highlight the need for stringent measures to deter the sale of stolen tools.

Trades United had previously called on the government to impose a £10,000 fine on event organisers of car boot sales and markets that permit the resale of stolen tools. By reducing the opportunities for thieves to offload stolen goods, Trades United and its supporters believe the frequency of vehicle breakins and thefts will decrease significantly.

It argues that the Theft Act 1986, which addresses the handling of stolen goods, is currently underenforced. The Act stipulates:

1. A person handles stolen goods

Participants at the end of the Trades United rally

Trades United’s rally attracted widespread media coverage

if, knowing or believing them to be stolen, they dishonestly receive, retain, remove, dispose of, or assist in the realisation of the goods for another’s benefit.

2. A person found guilty of handling stolen goods can face up to fourteen years imprisonment upon conviction.

Despite these provisions, enforcement is lacking, with crime reference numbers issued without thorough investigation into the crimes or the locations where stolen goods are resold. Trades United says that for the past six years, the government has shown no urgency in tackling tool theft as over 44,500 incidents have been reported – the equivalent of a tradesperson losing their livelihood every 12 minutes. The impact of tool theft is not just a financial loss but also has a huge mental health impact on those affected by this crime.

Trades United seeks to hold the government accountable and ensure the laws designed to protect tradespeople are effectively enforced. Founder Shoaib Awan launched a petition for the previous Government to address this issue with campaign group Trades United, but when the General Election was called, all such petitions were automatically

THE HUMAN IMPACT OF TOOL THEFT

Joe Baker, Second City Screed: “If working hard all week to provide for your family wasn’t hard enough, there is now another obstacle to prevent us from earning money to survive.

The thieves that are taking these tools and can sell them at car boots without any proof of purchase or licence etc and this is unacceptable.

“We need to put a stop to this so that it prevents them from stealing more. If there is no market for the tools to be sold, then it takes away the reason to steal them in the first place.

I for one am fully behind any petition or event that raises awareness and can get the government to make this matter an urgent priority on their agenda.”

Karm Warshawaya, Build Works: “A year ago, my van and all my tools were stolen in broad daylight. To say the impact of this was paralysing both emotionally physically and financially is an understatement.

Within two hours, everything we built over 10 years was gone. I was simply told let your insurance deal with it.

Tools are stolen every 17 minutes in the UK. Stolen Tool trafficking is incredibly lucrative for petty criminals, more needs to be done to protect tradespeople.

Car boots and cash converters are the easiest no trail places to sell stolen tools.

Help us to end this and make sure no tradespeople go through what we did.”

RAISING AWARENESS

Peter Booth, PB Plumber, shared his experience of the Trades United rally in London…

closed. It had reached over 46,000 signatures. However, he still believes it is important that all tradespeople make their voices heard and issues addressed by future MP’s and their parties.

Awan, said: “We brought tradespeople across the country together at Parliament Square for the government to see the distress these thieves and boot sales have caused to their livelihoods. Tool theft numbers

are rising year-on-year and not enough has been done to protect the trades. A crime reference number is no longer acceptable. This lawlessness needs to come to an end. We don’t want policies that don’t work we need strict enforcement and a crackdown operation with immediate effect. As tax-paying and law-abiding citizens we deserve better!”

He says it is distressing to see how widespread tool theft has become,

PRIME PROTECTION: L4V Statement Lock

With van crime becoming more prevalent across the UK and break-in methods increasingly more destructive, an optimum level of van security is required to stop these levels of attacks.

Conventional security upgrades provide an extra layer of defence for people looking to upgrade their van security, but with some criminals now going to extreme lengths to break into a van there are occasions when an even stronger level of security is required.

The L4V Statement Lock is a lightweight, high security, surface-mounted lock that braces a van’s doors together to provide increased protection and acts as a strong visual deterrent against the extreme attack methods we see more and more of.

Unlike some other surface-mounted locking solutions, the L4V Statement Lock incorporates anti-drill and anti-cut properties which when

impacting not only livelihoods but also mental wellbeing and family stability, adding that the lack of effective intervention from law enforcement only exacerbates the problem. “Businesses suffer not only from the loss of tools but also from the subsequent financial burdens such as increased insurance costs and repairs. It’s essential for communities, policymakers, and law enforcement agencies to work together to address this epidemic and provide support for those affected.”

Trades United says that the use of car boot sales to sell stolen tools highlights the need for tighter regulations and enforcement to prevent the sale of stolen goods. This not only perpetuates the cycle of theft but also makes it challenging for victims to recover their belongings. Awan adds that authorities should consider implementing measures to crack down on the sale of stolen goods at such venues to deter thieves and protect consumers.

combined creates one of the strongest locks on the market, withstanding attacks from heavyduty tools such as angle grinders and drills.

Tested to withstand prolonged attack and exceptional force, the L4V Statement Lock was independently awarded Sold Secure Automotive Diamond accreditation and is also recognised by Secured by Design for being a Police Preferred Specification.

Taking KBB design to the next level

KBB CAD software company

ArtiCAD has announced the launch of Version 24 of its ArtiCAD-Pro, BathCAD, and BedCAD design and pricing software.

Image created in ArtiCADPro featuring iMeshh models

The latest version introduces a new rendering option, automated natural lighting and views, advanced accessory and model import, and several additional features to further simplify the user experience.

Standing at the centrepiece of Version 24 is ArtiCAD’s UltraHD rendering, which harnesses the latest technologies to help users impress customers, win sales and stay ahead of the game. UltraHD rendering allows for more accurate reflections, refractions, and shadows, resulting in realisticlooking images. Achieved in a fraction of the time, this latest rendering innovation promises new heights for KBB designers.

A further game-changing feature to significantly enhance image quality is HDRI (high dynamic range imaging). HDRI technology offers 360° images that seamlessly wrap around designs, embedding lighting information directly into the image. This eliminates the effort of setting up lighting and views. The beauty of HDRI lies in its ability to simulate real-world lighting environments without the need for the designer to specify any additional settings.

Version 24 also has a new feature

to import GLTF models. GLTF is a file format for loading 3D models – making it a popular choice for displaying decorative models within designs. This allows users to choose from a far wider selection of high quality models to import into their designs. ArtiCAD’s new version features a selection of readily available decoration models (provided by iMeshh).

Alex Rollinger, Senior Marketing & Operations Executive at ArtiCAD, said: “We’re super excited to introduce our latest features, particularly UltraHD – a testament to our ongoing dedication to harnessing the latest advancements in technology. With UltraHD, we’re redefining the standards of ArtiCAD rendering, delivering unparalleled clarity and realism that’s simply breathtaking. At ArtiCAD, innovation is at the core of everything we do and these new features represent a significant leap forward for our software.”

Leon Rowland Q&Awith

In every issue, we meet members of the BiKBBI team for a quickfire questionnaire. This time, we speak to Strategic Relationships Manager Leon Rowland about his role in contributing to the organisation’s growth through collaboration.

Please tell us about your role at BiKBBI

As the Strategic Relationships Manager at BiKBBI, my role focuses on corporate stakeholders, developing and maintaining relationships with manufacturers, retailers, suppliers and trade associations, with the ultimate aim of building networks that promote collaboration from all areas of the KBB sector.

What did you do before joining BiKBBI?

This is my first role in the KBB sector, but the skills I have developed throughout my career have proven to be transferable during the 10 months I have been at BiKBBI. Prior to joining, I was the Sales & Events Manager at a Hotel Group, responsible for

building hotel and conferencing packages for the corporate sector.

For 17 years prior to my events role, I was Regional Manager for insurance provider AON, overseeing a team within their Accident and Healthcare division. Within the role, I had daily contact with the selfemployed trades community which has certainly helped me in my current position.

What do you find most rewarding about your role?

There are so many things about my role that I enjoy, but ultimately contributing to the

growth and sustainability of BiKBBI and its partners in order support thousands of installation businesses across the UK.

What makes BiKBBI different from other places you’ve worked?

My career before joining the institute was wholly in commercial environments so working with a not-for-profit organisation is very different but very rewarding. Our team is small which means building close relationships with colleagues, and this camaraderie enhances our relationships, allowing us to complete projects more efficiently and effectively.

Tell us something most people might not know about you?

I featured in the music video of Blur’s Girls and Boys. I have DJ’d at Pacha and Ministry of Sound. I have five children and five grandchildren, two mini sausage dogs and tortoise called Floyd. I can also trace my bloodline back to Erik Thorvaldsson (Erik the RED), the first Viking to settle on Greenland.

And finally, what are you working on currently?

So much stuff. Continuing to work with potential corporate sponsors and retail partners along with creating new affinity partnerships for our members.

iBox 2: concealed shower installs made

With 11 million worldwide installations, the iBox universal base set has provided installation simplicity since its original launch two decades ago. Taking this ease of installation further, hansgrohe has evolved its highly regarded iBox universal base to draw on feedback from installers, making what was already a popular choice with those fitting a hansgrohe concealed shower, even more appealing.

Prioritising useful fitting enhancements that support on-the-job speed, flexibility, and safety objectives when fitting concealed shower installs, the iBox universal 2 is ideal for heating professionals looking to save valuable time on projects without compromising on quality.

From the built-in flexibility that addresses awkward fitting scenarios to new recyclable construction materials and, from the removal of the need to trim components to the inclusion of both pre-mounted seals and preinstalled function blocks, the iBox universal 2 offering will chime with any installer’s desired wish list.

Tim Bridge, from Tim Bridge Plumbing and Heating in Yorkshire - who has been using the original iBox for over 20 years – was

made simple

5 ways the iBox universal 2 helps installers win

Make trimming a thing of the past – the iBox universal 2 base set sliding sleeve is extremely easy to slide in regardless of the depth at which the concealed box is installed. This makes the waterproof box simpler, quicker, and safer to install.

Flexibility is now built-in – The integrated mounting ring allows the box to be installed in, on or in front of the wall. The ring can be attached at the front or the rear and allows for mounting with any type of installation offering so many options.

Better for the world around us. The iBox universal 2 is constructed of expanded polypropylene (EPP foam). This is a sustainable material and provides perfect sound adsorption and thermal insulation. The versatile material is also lightweight, waterproof, and can be recycled.

A pre-mounted seal now alleviates potential errors or component loss. The iBox universal 2 sealing sleeve is permanently attached to the sliding sleeve so that it cannot be lost or forgotten during the installation process. This practical benefit simplifies installation as everything is always at hand. In addition, the sleeve is continuously elastic and waterproof. 1 2 3 4 5

Pre-installed function blocks – the new norm. The iBox universal 2 high-quality function block is manufactured using metal and delivered pre-installed to underpin fast and safe installations.

amongst the first to use the new iBox universal 2 in a UK property. Giving his initial feedback, Tim said: “I’ve been using hansgrohe’s iBox since I was 17, so it is great to see the next generation coming through. Ease of installation has kept me returning to this fixing system time and time again as I know it just works.

“However, the new version irons out even those aspects that may have taken any time, making it even more straightforward to install and fit correctly. And you only need two tools – a screwdriver and an Allen key – to fit it! It is great to have a built-in spirit level included to make it easy to ensure you’ve got it horizontal

before you finally tighten any screws.”

Flexibility and longevity are key to the iBox universal and universal 2 products. Regardless of whether it is a manual or thermostatic, push bottom or single lever option, the iBox 2 remains the same, enabling last minute decisions when choosing bathroom products.

The new iBox universal 2 can be used with all existing and future concealed finish sets from Hansgrohe, for existing finish sets, you just need an adaptor; so, the iBox can remain in place should www.pro.hansgrohe.co.ukfinish set replaced.

Hey

Big Spender!

Homeowners are spending more on projects, despite a slight dip in overall activity, according to a survey from home renovation and design platform Houzz.

Renovation spend has surged in the last three years, as median spend increased 13% from £15,000 in 2020 to £17,000 in 2023, according to Houzz.

Median spend is the midpoint level, meaning half of renovating homeowners on Houzz spent more and half spent less.

The 2024 UK Houzz & Home Study of nearly 1,800 respondents found that the top 90th percentile of spend also doubled to £200,000, from £100,000 in 2020. While renovation activity remains consistent with 48% of homeowners having taken on a renovation project in 2023, this is down a percentage point from last year.

Gen Xers (typically 40-54 year olds) spent the most on renovation projects for the second consecutive year, with their median spend at £22,000, compared with Millennials (25-39 year olds) and Baby Boomers (55-74 year olds) at £15,000 and £16,000, respectively.

The top 10% of spenders in these groups allocated substantial budgets, with Gen Xers at £200,000 and Baby Boomers at £180,000. While Gen X leads in spend, Baby Boomers continue to drive renovation activity (54%), followed by Xers (34%) and Millennials (12%).

Marine Sargsyan, Houzz Staff Economist, said: “Despite economic headwinds, investment in home renovations continued in 2023. Gen Xers, in particular, continued to lead the charge in spending. As homeowners finally had the means to upgrade their spaces, the reliance on professional help remained strong. Looking ahead, nearly half of homeowners are now planning renovations, highlighting a strong enthusiasm for enhancing living spaces.”

Along with this substantial investment, nearly all renovating homeowners enlisted the help of a home professional in 2023 (93%),

Design and Installation: Hobsons Choice / Photography: Darren Chung
Photographer: David Butler / Interior
Designer: Amelia McNeil / Architect: Felix Padfield
Design: Rabbit Hole Studios

with specialty service providers such as electricians (59%), and plumbers (52%), hired most frequently. Homeowners are also taking the time to both plan and save for their projects.

Renovation planning is typically double the time the actual construction takes. Plus, ‘finally having the financial means’ is the project catalyst for more than a third of renovating homeowners.

Considering that motivation, it’s

no surprise that cash from savings continues to be the most common form of funding for renovation projects (86%), followed by credit cards and cash from a previous home sale (18%, each). Credit card usage jumped 7 percentage points in 2023 (10% in 2022).

The annual UK Houzz & Home Study is the largest survey of residential renovating, building and decorating activity published.

The survey covers a wide range of

renovation projects in 2023, from interior renovations and additions to home systems, exterior upgrades and outdoor projects.

Data gathered includes historical and planned spends, professional involvement, motivations and challenges behind building, renovation and decorating projects, as well as planned activities for 2024.

The 2024 study includes more than 1,779 respondents in the

UK, providing insights into the home improvement activity of the millions of users of the Houzz site and mobile apps.

The 2024 UK Houzz & Home survey was sent to registered users of Houzz and fielded between January and February 2024. The full report is available from the Houzz website.

OTHER KEY FINDINGS:

Multi-room renovations

Homeowners consistently undertake multiple renovation projects simultaneously.

Renovating homeowners on average target nearly three interior room upgrades and two or more outdoor projects during their renovations.

Bathrooms lead in project activity

Bathrooms continue to lead as the most commonly renovated interior room (29%), closely followed by kitchens and living rooms (26% each).

Following last year’s significant jump in median spend for bath and kitchen projects, these renovations saw increases of 39% and 16%, respectively, reaching £7,300 for bathrooms and £15,100 for kitchens in 2023.

Outdoor projects back in the spotlight

Following a brief drop, outdoor project activity rose 17 percentage points in 2023 (51%, compared with 34% in 2022).

Outdoor lighting is the most commonly updated outdoor system (28%).

Security systems follow (15%, up nearly 2% from last year), as homeowners install cameras and sensors around their properties.
