As we hurtle towards the end of 2023 at an alarming rate, it’s time to turn our attention to the forthcoming BiKBBI Annual Conference & Awards ceremony which takes place on 6 February 2024 in London’s Westminster. The Awards continue to grow each year and, as we near the close of the nomination period, it is safe to say that we have been totally blown away yet again this year. We have had unprecedented interest from all areas of the industry and record numbers of entries across all categories – we even made the decision to extend the entry deadline as we had so many requests for an extension. Whilst this is great for everyone involved in planning, entering and even judging the awards, the biggest win is that there is now an established, credible awards programme dedicated to the vital KBB installation workforce. The growth we are seeing in terms of participation is a testament to just how important these awards are for recognising and rewarding the talented, hardworking individuals and businesses within our sector. Being a finalist in the BiKBBI Awards is so much more than a glitzy awards dinner and a certificate to take home. It’s an acknowledgement of excellence, an accomplishment and a marketing tool for you to build your business or your CV around. If you haven’t already entered, you still can, up to 5 November 2023, and you find more information on the BiKBBI Awards in this issue of The Installer Magazine (see page 8) as well as at bikbbi.org.uk.

BiKBBI UPDATE
Apprenticeship Standard approved BiKBBI is delighted to share the news that the Level 2 Fitted Interiors Installer apprenticeship, which until now has been a pathway within the Furniture Manufacturer apprenticeship standard, has been approved to have its own standard by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education. This is a significant development and indicates an important juncture in the process of building a sustainable workforce – not just for the installation sector, but the whole KBB industry – as KBB installation career opportunities become instantly more visible to education leavers and those considering a career change.
6
bikbbi.org.uk
Even more so, having a standard specifically for KBB installation provides an opportunity for the industry to build other apprenticeship pathways within the standard to meet the needs of the sector, such as specialist pathways in kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom installation, as well as other disciplines including surveying, fabrication and even site management. The IfATE (Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education) has advised that the Fitted Interiors Installer apprenticeship will be approved for delivery imminently, ahead of over 100 apprenticeship standard revisions
BiKBBI Update
which are currently being fast-tracked through internal processes, many of which within the construction and built environment team. Damian Walters, CEO of BiKBBI, said: “This development is a game-changer for our industry, and we should all be very excited about the opportunities that now exist as a result of having a stand-alone apprenticeship standard for fitted interiors. It has been a long and arduous process to get the standard approved, and a huge amount of credit must be given to Lisa Williamson and her team at Achieve + Partners, who have been instrumental in driving this through. The possibilities for attracting new talent to our sector and addressing the skills shortage across the KBB industry are, quite literally, endless as a result of this achievement.” Lisa Williamson, Director at Achieve + Partners, added: “We are delighted that we now have the standalone apprenticeship available, giving the KBB industry the recognition it rightly deserves. I would also like to thank the KBB industry for their continued support through the extended development process. We look forwards to working with the KBB industry and training provider network to offer apprenticeships and help build a skilled workforce.”

PAST WINNER: Paul Miles, ACE Electrical & Plumbing “I won Installer of the Year in 2022 which I see at a pat on the back and recognition of the quality and standard I achieve as a business owner. It was a moment of pride and celebration at the time, and continues to be something to be proud of and makes our business stand out from the crowd. More importantly, it’s a motivation tool for the whole team to continue to be better and to strive to improve. “In 2023, Elliott Perry won Young Installer of the Year. Elliott came through an apprenticeship with us, so now we have the chance to boast that we are a multi-award-winning business, which we have on the arm of our polo shirts and van signage!”
PAST WINNER: Maria Thomas, AT Installation Services
PAST WINNER: Carl Terlecki, Terlecki
“It was an honour to even be shortlisted, but to win an award was amazing. I still look at it in the office and I’m so proud that I won. “In a male dominated industry, winning Installation Manager of the Year in 2022 really made a difference in my career. I’ve had job offers and people I hardly know in the industry calling to congratulate me. I work very hard and to be recognised for that really boosted my confidence. “So, to any other BiKBBI members who are considering entering this year, I would say give it a good go. It represents great recognition that can lead to bigger things for you and your business. The awards event itself is also a brilliant night and provides a unique chance to meet with some great people in the industry – for example, after meeting Band of Builders at the event, we have since worked alongside them on a charity project.”
Winning Installation Business of the Year in 2023 was an incredible honour. We, as a team, always say that we are only as good as our last job but as we stand back and look at the number of happy customers with beautiful new spaces that we have had the privilege of working with, it is fantastic to be recognised and affirmed in the industry as giving a great service. “I think winning any award will give a positive outcome both internally and externally. It creates a talking point and builds your brand. We want to be a positive influence on the industry, our customers, suppliers and internal team. Winning the award is helping us to continue innovating and striving for excellence in all we do. “If you are thinking of entering, it’s well worth the 20-30 minutes that it will probably take. Sitting down and reflecting on your business, your team and your partners is a good exercise in and of itself, so whether you are shortlisted or not, the investment in time is worth it. You never know, you might just be the next winner!”

BiKBBI Update
MHK PLEDGES LONG TERM SUPPORT
In September, BiKBBI announced MHK UK, a company of the MHK Group, as a corporate sponsor. The innovative and dynamically expanding full-service association for medium-sized specialist trade and craft companies and has more than 40 years of experience in kitchen expertise. The group is also a specialist for the sanitary, heating, and air-conditioning sectors, as well as supplying medium sized businesses in the painting and building trades. David Morris, Sales Manager at MHK UK, said: “The MHK Group recognises the importance of installations and the role that this area of the sector plays in the success of our business. As MHK UK continues to grow its network of independent KBB retailers, it’s important that we support the installations sector and work alongside BiKBBI to help solve the skills shortage, improve education and training, and ultimately build a sustainable workforce that all KBB businesses will benefit from.” BiKBBI CEO, Damian Walters, added: “BiKBBI’s network of corporate sponsors continues to grow and 2023 has seen a record number of manufacturer, supplier and distributor brands committing to support the vital work we are doing to drive positive change in the sector. To welcome MHK UK onboard as a corporate sponsor is significant not only for us as an organisation but because it is a testament to just how important the installation workforce
is the whole KBB industry. The work that the MHK Group does via their academy facility in Germany is a leading example of how the UK should be approaching education and training and we are very excited at the prospect of working with MHK UK the development of our plans on education.”

Lakes Showering Spaces join the ranks Lakes Showering Spaces became a BiKBBI corporate sponsor in August, as the showering enclosure manufacturer pledges its support to the government sanctioned organisation and its work on building a sustainable workforce and improving education, standards and compliance in the KBB installation sector. Lakes is an award-winning family-run business, manufacturing innovative showering spaces including walk-ins and bath screens and was established in 1986. The company prides itself on designing and producing products that meet the needs of today’s lifestyles as well as its environmental responsibility, introducing 100% recycled packaging on all of its products in 2019 and achieving the Carbon Footprint Standard in March
2019 – the first company in the sector to become a Carbon Neutral Plus organisation. Mike Gahir, Managing Director of Lakes Showering Spaces (pictured), said: “Our drive to make a positive difference does not end with our products and service to our customers. We are committed to doing more for not only our local community but for the wider KBB sector and we recognise the importance of the role that KBB manufacturers have to play in the future of the installation sector. We fully support the work that BiKBBI is doing, and we are keen to play an active role going forward.” Lakes joins a growing line up of manufacturers, suppliers and distributors pledging their support for the BiKBBI and the work that the institute undertakes to drive positive change in the KBB installation sector, particularly as the early effects of the skills shortage begins to be felt throughout all areas of the industry. BiKBBI CEO, Damian Walters, added: “The work that we are doing within the sector is vital to the future of the industry, not just for installers but for all businesses operating in the KBB industry. We are delighted to have such a prominent and wellrespected brand such as Lakes Showering Spaces as a corporate sponsor. From our early discussions, it is clear that there is synergy between Lakes’ aspirations for the future of the sector and our strategic objectives and we look forward to working with them.”
WREN CONTRACTS BECOME BIKBBI STANDARDS PARTNER BiKBBI recently announced a new partnership with Wren Contracts, in addition to the organisation’s longstanding relationship with Wren Kitchens. Wren Contracts have ambitious expansion plans within the contracts market and, as a BiKBBI Retail Installation Standards Partner, will approach the new build sector in a unique and forward-thinking way, reducing the complexity and risk associated with installation and engaging and supporting for installation community. Announcing the development, Damian Walters, BiKBBI CEO, said: “Our work with the retail team at Wren has gone from strength to strength since 2017, and it has been a privilege to be part of their continued growth within the sector both here in the UK and overseas. Wren is a business with a focus on delivering a robust service, and I am certain that their entry into the contracts sector will be no different. Wren’s ethos on working with exceptional installers is progressive and therefore I am pleased that they have made the decision to work with us within their new contracts proposition.” Matthew Weatherill, Contracts Operations Manager at Wren Kitchens, added: “Since 2009, our achievements in the retail sector have increased significantly, driven by our commitment to provide an outstanding customer experience. This same commitment extends to our entry into the contracts market, where our newly introduced Contracts Installation Service, coupled with our wealth of experience, mirrors our success in the retail sector. We are proud to offer both sectors a FIRA Gold Accredited Installation Service, and we firmly believe that we can provide developers with an unparalleled service in the contract market.”

BiKBBI launches Apprenticeship Careers Support Desk BiKBBI has launched a dedicated Careers Support Desk with the aim of attracting GCSE and A-Level students in to the KBB industry as part of the institute’s ongoing strategy to close the skills gap and drive change across the sector. BiKBBI’s Careers Support Desk, delivered in conjunction with The Apprenticeship Partner, will provide a much-needed vehicle to signpost ambitious young people that are contemplating their futures towards the opportunities that a career in KBB installations can bring. The BiKBBI Careers Support Desk will enable young people interested in exploring a career in installation to connect directly with dedicated advisors that can provide them with an insight into the Level 2 Fitted Furniture Installer apprenticeship, as well as information on training providers, and assistance with finding employment. The Support Desk will be promoted via BiKBBI’s digital and social media platforms, working with a number of strategic partners to help reach young people across the UK. A vocational apprenticeship route offers young people an outstanding opportunity to gain respected skill-based qualifications, learn about real-world business management, and achieve great career outcomes without a lifetime of debt. These qualifications serve as a testament to the qualified apprentice’s expertise and readiness, giving them a competitive edge in the KBB installation sector. A research paper published by the House of Commons in February this year reported that the number of people starting apprenticeships increased by 9% in 2021/2022, whilst UCAS figures show a decline in the number of people applying to universities in 2023. BiKBBI CEO Damian Walters said: “This change in behaviour is good news for those industries reliant on vocational courses and suffering from skills shortages, but it does mean that it is more important than ever that the KBB sector is visible and able to compete for future talent. Bringing young people into our
14
bikbbi.org.uk
sector is critical. On top of a well-publicised skills gap crisis, we have an ageing workforce which will only lead to further challenges and labour shortages in the future. “The Fitted Furniture Installer course is a fairly new pathway, and most school and college leavers will not be aware of the course and therefore might be thinking their options are limited to more traditional qualifications such as plumbing or carpentry. The BiKBBI Careers Support Desk is just one of a number of initiatives we are delivering to increase the profile of the qualification, attract fresh talent and encourage employers to embrace apprenticeships within our sector.” Following the launch of the BiKBBI Careers Support Desk, which will go live on Monday 7 August 2023, BiKBBI also has plans for a follow up campaign whereby its education advisor, The Apprenticeship Partner, will seek potential employers that match the needs of budding apprentices. Hannah Hockley, Managing Director of The Apprenticeship Partner and Chair of the BiKBBI Education Steering Committee, added: “There will be thousands of education leavers that are undecided about their futures at the moment, and it is really important for them and the KBB industry that we highlight the career opportunities that the installation sector can bring. We want to go further than leafleting at careers events and posting ads on social media, and what we are creating is an opportunity for young people to have a conversation with a real person that can offer meaningful guidance, at a time and place that suits them. The KBB installation sector, and the wider KBB industry, provides a vast range of opportunities and we believe this approach will go some way to promoting the possibilities to a fresh pool of talent.” For more information on the BiKBBI Careers Support Desk, contact hannah@theapprenticeshippartner.co.uk To find out how you can support BiKBBI in driving positive change in the KBB installation sector, email michelle.daniels@bikbbi.org.uk

BiKBBI launches new website with stakeholders in mind
In September BiKBBI launched its new website which includes the introduction of new functionality and a new look and feel for the brand, creating an improved user journey to ensure that the government-sanctioned organisation continues to serve its key stakeholders efficiently and effectively. The improved functionality and content within the new BiKBBI website has been developed with the institute’s key stakeholder groups in mind and, in particular, there has been a focus on accessibility, ensuring that all areas of the sector, alongside consumer audiences, can use the site as the ‘go to’ destination for KBB installation, providing information, guidance, and support in a clear, concise and user-friendly manner. The launch of the new site follows an extensive consultation with BiKBBI’s register of installation businesses. Considerations on the information that installation businesses need and how best to support those with accessibility challenges such as learning difficulties were all factored into the review. A recent mental health study by On The Tools reported that 52% of UK tradespeople surveyed considered themselves to have a neurodiverse condition including ADHD/ADD, dyslexia and OCD/OCPD. The new BiKBBI website acknowledges the challenge that digital and written communication can present and therefore includes the introduction of accessibility software Userway, which allows users to customise their journey on the site, with the ability to enlarge text, alter spacing, change colours and remove imagery. Other stakeholder groups consulted include the KBB retailer sector and consumers, with the new platform prioritising the information most important to these groups, delivered
16

in format that is sympathetic to their preferred functionality. The introduction of a Library section, which will become home to extensive information, guides and reports for all stakeholders over the coming weeks and months, is just one example of the many improvements across the site. Michelle Daniels, BiKBBI’s Director of Marketing & Communications (pictured), said:: “The BiKBBI website is an important tool in our digital marketing portfolio. Our website is typically the first port of call for all stakeholders, including installation businesses looking for information on registration, training and apprenticeships, retailers and manufacturers exploring how they can work with us and, of course, consumers looking for information and guidance on KBB installation including finding a professional installer. “We have worked with our stakeholders to ensure that our new website meets the needs of all target groups in a streamlined, focused, and intuitive format. We are very excited to launch the new platform and will continue to work on evolving the platform to ensure we continue to serve our stakeholders and the KBB industry.”
Motor Matters
MOTOR MATTERS Our new regular round-up of motoring issues affecting installers…
Ultra Low Emission Zone schemes have put the focus squarely on greener vehicles but the shift from petrol or diesel is by no means a simple transition for most installers. According to a survey by Right Fuel Card, 92% of tradespeople have no plans to consider greener vehicles in the next 12 months. The main barrier to moving to alternative fuels for many is the high cost involved. The average price of an electric van is around £30,000 which is an investment most tradespeople are unable to warrant in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis. It can also be harder for sole traders to get finance accepted for a new vehicle as they will need to prove their income. For this reason, affordability is often the top priority, so alternative fuels are not yet on the radar for many tradespeople. Right Fuel Card points out that although upfront costs are higher, electric vans are almost 25% cheaper to own than their diesel equivalents and can enter clean air zones freely. The expansion of the ULEZ in London has highlighted how important it is for tradespeople to eventually switch to alternative fuels. The survey suggests that due to the nature of their business, switching to alternative fuels is arguably more practical for the trades industry than some others. Installers, plumbers, electricians and joiners among others are likely to be sole traders with one vehicle. They also tend to work locally or regionally which limits concerns around the limited driving range of vehicles that use alternative fuels. Image: TfL

THEFT ALERT Image: macrovector on Freepik
Installers and other trades are being warned to step up security as commercial insurer NFU Mutual’s new research reveals almost nine in ten (89%) tradespeople have experienced theft and crime, with many occuring from vehicles. Since 2010 NFU Mutual has funded a dedicated vehicle theft unit which shares intelligence, delivers training, and works with police forces across the country and overseas to seize millions of pounds of stolen machinery. The team, which is now part of the new National Construction and Agri Theft Unit (NCATT), is responding to thefts which are hitting both sole traders and large construction firms. NFU Mutual is warning people not to be complacent as its study finds over three quarters (78%) of tradespeople and contractors admit they have left machinery and tools in a vehicle overnight. Vans are a key target for criminals, with nearly six in ten experiencing theft from their vehicle (58%). Tradespeople say the main impacts of these thefts include loss of income (55%) and extra costs to replace or hire new kit (43%), and worryingly over a third reveal theft has an impact on their Image: rawpixel.com on Freepic mental health (34%). Despite this, the study found an alarming number (43%) of tradespeople do not have a full list or know the value of what they own which could make it difficult to report crimes to the police or track recovered items back to their owners. Only 57% of respondents said they would be able to produce a complete list of their tools and value, leaving 43% without a recorded inventory. Only 41% keep photographic evidence of their tools and just 17% video their equipment even though these are quick and easy ways to keep a record. Zoe Knight, Commercial Specialist at NFU Mutual, said: “It is crucial that tradespersons are fully supported should the worst happen. The cost of replacing kit and machinery has increased significantly due to supply chain issues in recent times. We are advising tradespeople to know what they own by recording serial numbers and keeping up to date with current market values.”

Motor Matters Image: Euro NCAP
PUTTING SAFETY FIRST New ratings issued by vehicle assessment programme Euro NCAP have revealed the safest commercial vehicles. Results included a Gold rating for the Ford Transit, and Fiat Ducato. The Mercedes-Benz Vito drops from Gold to a Silver rating, where it joins the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Volkswagen Transporter, the Renault Trafic, Nissan Primastar and Volkswagen Crafter. Those that achieved a Bronze Rating were the Citroën Dispatch, the Citroën Relay, Iveco Daily, Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro, Opel/ Vauxhall Movano, Peugeot Expert, Peugeot Boxer, Renault Master, and Toyota PROACE. Commercial vans do not have a higher crash rate than other vehicles, but crashes involving vans tend to be more severe for their opponent vehicles and vulnerable road users. Euro NCAP has seen that ADAS technology can help effectively prevent or mitigate the consequences of these crashes. However, commercial vans are often not adequately equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Euro NCAP’s new criteria for commercial van ratings takes ADAS to a higher level with greater emphasis on vulnerable road users including pedestrian safety, with focus on night-time scenarios, and cyclists as well as the introduction of one new van-to-car crash scenario. Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary-General at Euro NCAP, said: “Safety technologies and innovative solutions are developing at a fast pace. Euro NCAP must develop its criteria to ensure that manufacturers maintain the impetus to innovate and make available the latest safety technologies in all vehicles on European roads. Just because vans are used for commercial purposes, does not mean they should be any less safe than passenger cars. Under Euro NCAP’s plans by 2026, vans will be expected to meet the same ADAS requirements as passenger cars.”

MHK
LESSONS to be learned
BiKBBI CEO Damian Walters made a flying visit to the headquarters of buying group MHK to see first-hand their innovative approach to installation training As many were heading off to for their summer holidays this year, I found myself boarding a plane, hand luggage laden at London City Airport, bound for Germany to visit the team at MHK. Whilst the buying group MHK is a relatively new proposition for the UK market, the giant German brand is an incredible force elsewhere, with an impressive portfolio of manufacturing and retail partners. I was invited to take a look at their operation and in particular their investment in all things installation. I was given the precursor that the Germans ‘did things differently’ and that they were keen to share some of their success with the UK. Upon arrival in Frankfurt, I was whisked off to MHK’s impressive HQ in the middle of the city. A modern, impressive
22
bikbbi.org.uk
office complex, which boasted a fully self-sufficient operation, including partner marketing, software and even their own bank! Putting the glam and glitz of their impressive head office to one side (and their unrivalled hospitality for a weary traveller), the MHK team pointed across their park (yes, their park!) at an unassuming building in the distance, teasingly suggesting that the building ‘was the reason for my visit’! We took a slow walk across the park, with the first mentions of installation entering the conversation. What was apparent was that Germany – and the other global regions that MHK serve – are experiencing the same levels of labour shortage as the UK, but what the conversation alluded
to was that they had a very different way of dealing with the challenge. Upon arrival at the building (an altogether more unassuming structure than the shiny HQ we had just left), we headed up in the lift to the new MHK Akadamie, a state-of-the-art facility with installation at its very heart. Occupying an entire floor of this building, the Akadamie is essentially a purpose-built school for installers (and designers), with an opportunity for fitters to get a practical hand on products supplied by MHK’s network of manufacturers. The facility housed everything from appliances to Quooker taps, work surfaces, wall fixing, extractors, cabinetry, and lighting. I was literally in absolute awe of what I was
MHK
“The Akadamie is a purpose-built school for installers, with an opportunity for fitters to get a practical hand on products supplied by MHK’s network of manufacturers”
being shown. Not only was this a space dedicated to installers, but it was noticeably clear the importance that MHK place on installation – on many occasions during the visit, installers being referred to as a critical component of their offering. In addition to the facility orchestrated by MHK, it was very clear that their manufacturing partners were equally bought in to the idea of installation; supplying the constant flow of products that the installers were working with within the Akadamie itself. MHK essentially allow their partners to book the space for new product launches, demonstrations, and masterclasses and it has now become a facility that is very much in demand. In
fact, to book a slot to use the space, now comes with a long lead time, demonstrating the principle that ‘if you build it, they will come’. This place is far from a bolt-on for the proposition, but instead an integral component to the MHK
powerhouse – and that was not only music to my ears, but hugely inspirational. It got me to thinking… could BiKBBI become the hub for such a project here in the UK? A central place to bring together manufacturers from across

“I see absolutely no reason why the UK could not replicate a similarly pro installation stance”
the world to deliver practical training and inspire the next generation of installers? In addition to the Akadamie, I was taken to one of MHK’s local fulfilment centres. By now, it was no surprise that this was also a highly efficient operation, located on the outskirts of Frankfurt and acting as a distribution centre and installer hub for the region. Another thing MHK does to support its retail network is take care of the issue of installation and connecting that world with quality installers. As a business, they work hard to provide solutions to their retail partners, above and beyond that of product provision. In fact, I would say that they offer their retailers a turnkey solution. Now, at risk of becoming an ambassador for MHK, I do want to state that I’m not on the payroll! However, I came away from that visit with a spring in my stride, witnessing first-hand the proactive stance MHK take on installation. I see absolutely no reason why the UK could not replicate the pro-installation stance I witnessed, especially when a focus in this area would

COOKER HOODS – an installer’s guide
WALL MOUNTED HOODS
Mythos T-Shelf Island Hood
In today’s kitchens, the demand for efficient, stylish, and quiet extraction systems has surged and consumers now have an extensive range of cooker hood designs at their fingertips, including those that go beyond extraction. There are now models that sanitize the air, monitor VOCs, allow you to browse the Internet, and even hook up to baby monitors to keep an eye on sleeping children. Here’s a simple guide from Franke to what’s available and some helpful advice for installation... DUCTED VS RECIRCULATORY EXTRACTION
There are two methods of extraction – ducted and recirculatory – and the kitchen design and age of the property will influence which is the best method. For ducted extraction, it’s advisable to use a 120mm or, ideally, a 150mm diameter ducting pipe. The ducting should follow the shortest route to the exterior wall, with minimal bends. If bends are necessary, opt for wide-angled ones and ensure they’re at least 30cm
26
bikbbi.org.uk
away from the hood ducting opening. Mounting the extractor on an exterior wall and expelling air straight out is considered the best option, as it shortens the distance for fumes and odours to exit. That said, kitchen design does not always follow this convenient advice. And so many models, almost all in our portfolio, are designed to also offer re-circulatory mode to flex round any kitchen layout. Hoods with a re-circulatory mode include a carbon cassette that requires cleaning and maintenance and possible
“It’s wise to remind the homeowner about vital ongoing maintenance” replacement over time. The cartridge neutralises cooking odours drawn up into the hood and re-circulates them back into the kitchen. It’s wise to remind the homeowner about vital ongoing maintenance. As a rule of thumb grease filters should be cleaned every two months and carbon filters replaced every four months. Regular upkeep
Cooker hoods not only maintains extraction performance but also prevents grease building up, reducing the risk of fire hazards.
CALCULATE THE ROOM SIZE
A common mistake when choosing a cooker hood is that its extraction capacity is not big enough for the room and so will not clear away cooking fumes and odours effectively. There’s a general principle that can be followed to calculate extraction rate that’s needed – take the measurements of the room and multiply the room’s length, width and height by ten. For example, a 4m x 4m x 2.5m kitchen requires an extractor capable of at least 400m³ per hour for optimum airflow. All cooker hoods clearly display their performance by m³ making it easy to choose the right option.

COOKER HOOD TYPES EXPLAINED
Wall mounted hoods Hoods that are positioned on an outside wall are generally recognised as being the most efficient. This is because they are ducted straight out on a short length of pipe, giving optimum performance and efficiency. Wall mounted hoods come in various styles to complement any kitchen.

Island hoods Island hoods can make for an eye-catching centrepiece in open-plan kitchens with an island unit but it’s crucial to assess the kitchen’s ceiling structure to be sure it can support the weight of the hood. If ducting to the exterior, try and make the route as straight as possible, with just one bend, to ensure efficient working. Hob extractors With the extractor built into the hob itself and offering a sleek design, these models are growing in popularity. In an open plan space, they maintain clear

sight lines across the kitchen and allow greater freedom for pendant lighting. They can be installed with ducting in the floor to the exterior, which is fine for a new build property, or with builtin filters offering the flexibility in any layout. Downdraft extractors Downdraft extractors are similar to hob extractors, also offering a sleek design that is housed within the worktop. A downdraft

extractor is a slim cassette that is positioned behind the hob and rises out of the worktop when required and retracts when not in use. Ceiling hoods These models are installed flush into the void of the ceiling giving a very streamlined design. The depth of ceiling void varies with the age of a property. New builds have the depth for a standard sized hood, whereas an
older or period property often has narrower voids. There are different models from standard to slimline to get round this issue, and again it’s always good practise to minimise the number of bends in the ducting pipe. Under cabinet hoods Ideal for compact kitchens, under-cabinet hoods seamlessly integrate within cupboards without compromising efficiency. Sizes vary from around 50cm to 90cm so they offer a lot of flexibility for a wide range of projects including new builds where space can be at a premium. When fitting these hoods, ensure that the cabinets above have appropriate spacing to accommodate the hood’s size and shape. As we know, consumers often turn to their installers for guidance on product choices. Having a deep knowledge of products not only encourages trust but also paves the way for repeat business and positive recommendations. www.franke.com

Wren Contracts, a relative newcomer to the contract sector, is already an established player with a number of impressive contracts successfully under its belt and an interesting and rapidly growing portfolio of work in progress, all whilst the paint on their new logo is still drying! From a single dwelling to multi-hundred property developments and muchneeded social housing projects, Wren Contracts – a dedicated division within the UK’s number one kitchen retailer, Wren
Kitchens – is causing a big swell in the housing development space. Wren Kitchens last year designed, manufactured and delivered more than 130,000 kitchens and took annual turnover to a record £1.065bn. On the back of its kitchen success, Wren introduced a wide range of affordable luxury fitted bedrooms in early 2023 which is proving to be another resounding success and growing in popularity. Since its launch in 2009 Wren has always been driven by a
desire to do things differently. By challenging convention, it has been able to identify opportunities for improvement and set new industry benchmarks. Wren Contracts is no exception, particularly when it comes to the installation phase. All Wren kitchens and bedrooms are designed, manufactured and delivered inhouse, which puts them in total control and enables Wren to maintain the highest standards throughout their supply chain. Once a kitchen is delivered, it’s over to Wren’s

“As the business grows, Wren Contracts is continually looking to expand its team of installers and values its association with BiKBBI” installation team, who are continuing to raise the on-site bar by focusing on standards of workmanship, attention to detail and health & safety. Whether it’s a retail or multiproperty contract customer, Wren’s high standard installation processes are mirrored across the business. Testament to this is their FIRA International Gold accreditation, which sets Wren apart from others in the contract sector. As the business grows, Wren Contracts is continually looking to expand its team of installers and value its association with the BiKBBi, who ensure that all installers are professionally verified. Wren takes it one step further by carrying out its own quality checks, which include critiquing installers on-site work before engaging with them. All Wren installers receive a full induction programme to ensure they are fully conversant and compliant with the fitting process, they feel part of the team and have an appreciation for Wren’s values and high

level corporate and customer expectations. Wren looks after its installers, offering competitive rates with prompt payments. Matt Weatherill, Operations Manager at Wren Contracts, said: “We don’t just abandon our installers to get on with the job, they are an integral part of the contracts team and a key link to the customer. Our installation managers visit site at least once a week to support our installers and check-in with customers to make sure there are no issues and that everything is progressing to plan.” In addition, Wren’s awardwinning transport department
is understandably proud of its 99.5% on-time-in-full deliveries and unique loading and unloading process. Every kitchen or bedroom is delivered direct to site and loaded in reverse build order. Items are numbered to ensure each kitchen is accurately delivered, unloaded – by fully trained porters, not the installer – and stored in build sequence, reducing double handling and the risk of damage. If the inevitable happens and a product gets damaged, replacement items are back on site within 24 hours so that neither customer nor installer experience any unnecessary delays.
Psychology
Harnessing the Power of a Positive Mind Boiling water tap manufacturer Quooker has been embracing the psychology of performance and its transformative effect on business, in partnership with sports psychologist Martin Littlewood One of the UK’s leading performance psychologists, Martin Littlewood, has been brought in by Quooker’s MD Stephen Johnson, to look at how to best connect its people and purpose to drive performance. With a fast-growing UK and Irish team, coupled with a desire to continue to excel and drive individual and corporate success, Littlewood has been hired as a consultant to focus on helping foster a workplace culture that empowers. With an impressive background in sports, Littlewood has built his reputation consulting in the world of professional golf and football, working with clubs such as Bolton Wanderers, Everton, Leicester City, Rangers, and the Premier League on their Elite Academy Manager’s development programme. His work with these sporting professionals, grounded on how correct self-identity and selfexpectation feeds into wider team success, was the reason behind the appointment. Johnson explained: “Quooker
UK is now the size of a corporate company, but we want a workplace culture that aligns more closely to that of a start-up; one that puts people first, can be flexible to the individual, that is based on trust and ultimately is a place where employees look forward to coming to work and giving it their all. “I have always maintained that our phenomenal success over the past decade is of course due in large part to the world-class product, but in equal measure due to our people. Company culture is crucial to get right which is why we have invested time and resources into it. Working with Martin has been brilliant in helping us navigate and implement this and we have already seen huge benefits across all teams.”
The psychology of personal performance
Littlewood added: “There are so many parallels between professional team sport and the world of business. You have groups of driven people working
“It is not about hiding who you are, but sharing it. We all come with different strengths and weaknesses, that’s what makes our company unique”
34
bikbbi.org.uk
towards a shared goal, all with individual responsibilities and unique character traits. My job is to work out how to get the best out of every single employee to help the company perform dynamically as a whole.” “When working with individuals, you must first understand who they are and what their unique job in the company is, which takes time and trust,” he added. “Only by understanding people as individuals can you help them work out their personal goals and focus – where they want to get better or how they can grow most efficiently.” Utilising Littlewood’s ‘spotlight profile’, Johnson and his senior management team have been better able to understand how team members cope under the spotlight, how they respond under pressure, what motivates them each day, and how they see their role in the bigger picture. The profile adopts a strength-based approach rather than identifying deficiencies. It is about recognising and appreciating colleagues above all. Leading from the front and in the spirit of transparency, Johnson’s own profile was shared with his whole team. He said: “It is not about hiding who you are, but sharing it. We all come with different strengths
Psychology
and weaknesses, that’s what makes our company unique. By acknowledging and accepting where I am both good and bad at something, helps identify the gaps and how others can step-up to fill them. When this same process is done in every team across the whole company, it helps us better plan and focus hiring around missing skillsets.”
Cultivating a culture of ‘we’ not ‘me’
Despite being a cultural buzzword of the past few years, wellbeing is more essential than ever for employers to consider. “The balance between prioritising performance versus wellbeing is a tricky one to get right,” suggests Littlewood. “Companies should want to create an environment where it is ok to find something challenging, providing you learn from it. A workplace culture that is ok with failure if it leads to growth is a healthy one.” “With Quooker, we are looking at building resilience through failure. Much like elite sports which can be ruthless and unforgiving, failure and mistakes can be tolerated, whereas egos that try to deflect responsibility for those mistakes will not be. Egos are intrinsically linked to fear. If you remove a culture of fear, you remove the ego. My job is to work with individuals to help them better understand themselves and to work out what stimulates fear for them, so they can be better prepared and more settled at work. Indeed, it is only through humility that success can be practically built.” Johnson added: “We are one team at the end of the day. We want people to bring their whole selves to work and see how valuable they are to the bigger picture. Our goal is to give our employees the freedom to perform and give them the
best environment in which to succeed. Their happiness is therefore paramount to me and I’m committed to ensuring our workplace is a positive one.”
The perils and power of leadership
Speaking on the topic of leadership, Littlewood explained: “Quality leadership makes or breaks a company. When your leadership are out of touch, unwilling to listen or transparent, it inevitably trickles down to create a workplace of fear or intimidation. Leaders must be mindful of the shadows they cast; people naturally follow what they see. “A healthy workplace is one where there is real freedom to speak truth to power. Are the leaders open to constructive criticism, without fear of reciprocation? Are the leaders willing to change? Are employees given a voice? Is there an open-door policy to the MD’s office? “The answer to these questions is yes at Quooker. Being driven to succeed, but not at the expense of people, is at the centre of Stephen’s leadership. It is refreshing to see his desire to get the best out of every employee. He expects hard work but in return
promises investment into them as individuals.”
The Quooker Creed
“My mantra for Quooker has always been a simple one,” says Johnson. “To show up and be better today than we were yesterday. Martin has been instrumental in helping develop this into a tangible company creed. Something every employee promises to abide by and is a non-negotiable set of values for new starters to agree to.” Littlewood added: “I worked with Quooker on their creed, ensuring it was something everyone at the company was proud of and had contributed to. It was vital every person knew they had a voice, that they were not invisible and that they could wholeheartedly implement. Creeds are not just buzzwords, they are actionable; although I was keen for the team not to shy away from being aspirational. Quooker’s creed is based on four common values – teamwork, trust, respect and passion. The power of this creed is that is has been developed by everyone. www.quooker.co.uk

Greener Heating In a world where sustainability is no longer a choice but a way of life, The Electric Heating Company has unveiled its latest innovation – the Iconic Air, Air Source Heat Pump This addition to the manufacturer’s eco-conscious heating solutions aims to revolutionise the way you keep your home warm with easy to use in built controls and weather compensation which help to further reduce your carbon footprint.
UNINTERRUPTED COMFORT, REGARDLESS OF THE CHILL When it comes to using an Air Source Heat Pump, one of the challenges can be maintaining efficient heating performance when external temperature drop to very low levels and the Air Source Heat Pump may struggle to extract enough energy from the outside air to maintain comfortable indoor temperature. At the heart of Iconic Air is a modulating boost element, designed to ensure your home stays warm and cosy, even in the harshest winter conditions. In situations like this, its internal unit incorporates a supplementary modulating auxiliary element that works in conjunction with the heat pump to enhance the system’s temperature. This means that the Iconic Air can consistently
provide the right amount of heat needed to keep the indoor temperature at the desired level.
SIMPLE, CONVENIENT, AND SMART The Electric Heating Company’s Air Source Heat Pump also featxures an intuitive inbuilt programmer allowing the user to set the ideal heating schedule to ensure the home is always at the perfect temperature. In addition, its Smart App Control puts the power to manage your heating within even easier reach, with the functionality to adjust settings and schedule heating cycles effortlessly via a smartphone. In a world committed to sustainability, The Electric Heating Company believes its Air Source Heat Pump is a game-changer, adding that by choosing its system, users are not just heating their home but are also taking a significant step towards achieving Net Zero.
if the Iconic Air Source Heat Pump is not the perfect fit for a home, The Electric Heating Company offers a range of alternative home heating methods, all designed to reduce carbon footprint and keep the home snug. Its expert team will work closely with you to find the ideal solution for your unique needs. www.electric-heating company.co.uk

Underfloor heating
SAVED FROM THE SNAGS A primary cause of repair in underfloor heating is the bulky connection between the hot underfloor heating cable and the cold cable that runs back to the thermostat. Against a backdrop of increased snagging rates and price rises, removing this point of failure is key to reducing costs for installers. Alistair Bell, Managing Director at ThermoSphere, explains the pressure that installers are under, and how electric underfloor heating manufacturers can help to alleviate it. Speak to anyone and they’ll tell you the cost of materials is increasing. And that’s exactly what the data shows. According to the UK’s material price index for new homes, the average cost of materials has gone up by 9.5% year on year. Unfortunately for heating installers, the largest price increase has been in thermal and acoustic insulation. This essential component of all heating installations has increased by 35%. Material cost is driving up the cost of repairs and at the same time, we’re seeing record numbers of snags. According to Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) data, 252,000 new homes were built in 2022, which is the highest figure since 2007. Each new home has an average of 157 snagging issues, and that is driving up the costs for installers and the industry as a whole. The issue is not limited to new homes and the latest figures on home improvement disputes suggest tradespeople are facing unnecessary pressures. For example, 43% of tradespeople spend between two and five hours a month dealing with
38
bikbbi.org.uk
customer complaints, and more than one in ten (11%) spend more than ten hours each month. In the worst cases, disputes can lead to legal action, which is an even bigger drain on time, money, and stress levels. According to research from Dispute Assist, almost twofifths (36%) of contractors
have previously had unhappy customers make a court claim against them.
Product innovation is the most viable solution
There are a few ways for installers and contractors to deal with these issues, including legal representation and other types of mediation. However,
Underfloor heating
these can be costly. They also fail to address the problem before it arises. Customers will still be left with repairs and installers are still left with the costs of mediation. Depending on the outcome, installers may still have to deal with the repair costs too. The best way to avoid snags and repairs is to stop them before they happen. By getting to the heart of the matter through product design, installers won’t need to ever worry about potential snags or repairs. It’s also always best to use products with the best possible guarantees. When a problem arises, a quality guarantee means installers can rely on the manufacturer to deal with it. Quality guarantees are a vote of confidence from the manufacturer and innovative products without them shouldn’t be relied on.
Essential changes to heating cable manufacturing
Electric underfloor heating systems have hot and cold cables and the point where these cables meet is one of – if not the – main point of cable failure arising from installation. Made during a secondary manufacturing process where the cables are crimped or soldered together, the connection or “joint” is normally three times thicker than the cable. Because of the size, installers are forced to carve into the insulation and membrane mat to make cavities to ensure a flush surface.
Cutting into the mat and subfloor introduces the risk of damage to the cable, which can cause cable failure down the line. The cavities made to ensure a flush surface for tiling don’t carry away heat properly. This then leads to overheating and cable failure months down the line. To avoid this, new underfloor electric heating cables are being designed to remove the connections between the hot and cold cables, thereby removing the number one point of failure arising from installation. To do this, manufacturers create the joints during the primary manufacturing process, which makes them ‘invisible’ and results in cables that are uniform in thickness from endto-end. An added benefit of making uniform-thickness cables is that installation is also much easier and quicker. Installation becomes a tool-free process as installers can simply press the cabling into the membrane mat.
“By getting to the heart of the matter through product design, installers won’t need to worry about snags or repairs” ThermoSphere Ultimate® is the first cable to be made with in-line ‘invisible’ joints, and a TwistedTwin construction, which means it is the most durable and reliable cable on the market. Because of its robust construction and innovative design, it is also the first cable to come with guaranteed reliability. If a fault arises within 12 months because of manufacture, ThermoSphere will replace the system and flooring. So, by using a cable with in-line joints, installers can save themselves the costs of repairs and snagging by addressing the root cause of the problem, and get guaranteed peace of mind. www.thermosphere.com

Triton underlines its GREEN credentials British shower manufacturer Triton Showers has been awarded carbon neutral certification for the second year running, marking another important step on the company’s journey to becoming Net Zero by 2035. The accreditation has been awarded by Planet Mark, an internationally recognised sustainability certification. It covers Triton’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions, as well as business travel, water consumption, waste, employee commuting, and paper usage for its UK and China operations in the 2022/23 financial year, all in accordance with PAS 2060:2014. The carbon neutral certification is the latest stage in Triton’s efforts on sustainability, which is underpinned by its ‘For a Cleaner Conscience’ brand positioning, with the business activating new projects, as well as nurturing existing initiatives. As part of this commitment, Triton has invested in verified VERRA offsets equivalent to its total measured carbon footprint, including one scheme that meets all seventeen of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Triton has also installed a new HVAC system at the business headquarters and rolled out electric vehicles across its fleet, helping to reduce its carbon footprint by 4.6% compared to the previous year. David Tutton, Managing Director at Triton Showers, said: “The Climate Change Committee recently revealed that the UK is no longer a world leader in sustainability, meaning it’s more important than ever for businesses to step up and take environmental responsibility. You’re Hired! Survey uncovers the factors influencing clients’ hiring decisions
New research from home renovation and design platform Houzz has revealed the most important factors affecting clients’ decisions to hire for renovation projects. The survey covered a number of aspects encompassing the whole customer relationship, raising some helpful food for thought for installers and other trades.
(37%, 36%, 28% and 26%, respectively). Growing categories on Houzz include landscape contractors (up from 16% in 2021 to 24% in 2022) and kitchen designers and installers (up from 19% in 2021 to 25% in 2022).
WHICH TRADES ARE HOMEOWNERS HIRING?
While referrals are the route many people take to finding a tradesperson (47%), more than a third of respondents said they used online directories such as Houzz to find their professional (37%). Offline directories and publications are proving least useful to homeowners, with only 6% saying this was how they sought out a pro. However, it clearly pays to maintain a good relationship with your clients, as 21% said they had hired someone they had worked with in the past.
Electricians are the most soughtafter pro for Houzz users, with 60% of survey respondents hiring one for their 2022 project and 45% saying they plan to hire an electrician in 2023. Carpet and flooring specialists are also popular, with around 42% of renovating homeowners hiring one last year or planning to hire one this year. Other well-browsed categories include carpenters, painters & decorators, builders and roofers

WHAT CHALLENGES DO HOMEOWNERS NEED TRADESPEOPLE TO RESOLVE? It seems that finding the right contractor is tricky for many homeowners, with 40% of respondents saying this was their biggest renovation challenge in 2022. So it makes sense to ensure you’re well positioned to help with this decision. It’s worth taking good photographs of your projects to allow potential clients to get a full idea of the type of work you do, and remember to ask previous clients to leave a review on your website or Houzz profile. These designs give installers the confidence that they are recommending on-trend options to their customers, at a better price point and with less disruption than typically

associated with the installation of real tile and stone.
FAST AND EASY INSTALLATION
Like all Malmo™ Rigid Comfort and Rigid Senses designs, the new tile effects can be fitted using simple joinery skills. The advanced Välinge 5G installation system with pushdown end joints ensures that each plank securely clicks into place with just a firm finger touch, eliminating the need for hammers or tapping tools. Minimal space is required for
Flooring positioning the end joints, making the flooring especially convenient when working in tight or restricted spaces, such as around sanitaryware or underneath bathroom doors, ensuring a quick and easy installation. Because it is an easy fit product, Rigid LVT gives the installer the flexibility to determine the right timing for the installation. For example, it is ideal for a swift kitchen refurbishment as it can go in at the end and fit around cabinetry, plus it can be installed over various existing subfloors, including concrete, plywood, or even existing tiles. This removes the need for coordination with other trades, and there’s no need to factor in drying time for grouting or washing down. Gail Alcock, Product Director for Malmo™, said: “LVT tiles offer installers a flooring solution that not only aligns with today’s design trends but also streamlines the installation process. Our extended range of Rigid Comfort tile designs, offering straightforward installation, durability, and minimal maintenance, empower installers to confidently recommend this as a highquality flooring product.”
WEALTH OF SUPPORT

EASY MAINTENANCE

LASTING INVESTMENT
The tile designs within the Malmo™ Rigid Comfort range boast a rigid SPC waterproof core, making them exceptionally durable and resistant to moisture and wear. The flooring can withstand heavy footfall and is less likely to chip or crack that real stone and ceramic tile, which makes it a long-lasting investment. The Rigid Comfort collection offers a

Q&A
QA &
with
Claire Walters
In every issue, we meet members of the BiKBBI team for a quick-fire questionnaire. This time, we speak to Claire Walters, Registrations Officer, about her job, and what working at BiKBBI means to her.
What makes BiKBBI different from other places you’ve worked?
The environment is great. My colleagues are super-supportive, and we all work together. It’s a busy office and there is always more to do but we collaborate and get the job done.
Tell us something most people might not know about you?
Please tell us about your role at BiKBBI
I have been with BiKBBI for over 11 years, and I have worked across many areas of the business. I currently work within the Registrations team, overseeing relationships with our Retail Installation Standards partners and their sub-contracted workforce. It is a varied role which involves interacting with BiKBBI registered installers and retailers on a daily basis which I love. Most of my time is spent helping installers make the most of their registered status.
What did you do before joining BiKBBI?
Before joining BiKBBI, I worked
48
bikbbi.org.uk
as an administrator in the insurance claims department of a London-based property management company. Although it was a completely different sector, there are many transferable skills that I use daily in my role at BiKBBI.
What do you find most rewarding about your role? The most rewarding element of my current role is the satisfaction of guiding and assisting installation businesses through the application and onboarding process, knowing that I have helped them to achieve registered status, having a positive impact on not only their business but also our retail partners.
Something I don’t often share is my five minutes of fame when I was six years old. On Christmas Day in 1988, I appeared on the TV show Challenge Anneka. My parents were in the St John Ambulance at the time and they were called on to be on the show so my sister and I had to go too. We met Christopher Biggins (my sister bandaged his leg!). I remember being furious that I had to wait until later on that day before I could open my Christmas presents.
And finally, what are you working on currently?
I am currently working with the senior management team on expanding our network of Retail Installation Standards Partners and supporting the registration and compliance teams through a typically busy period. www.bikbbi.org.uk
Underfloor heating
Barnstorming Brilliance Products from Schlüter were integral components of an ensuite bathroom in a beautiful barn conversion project A high-end residential project, in the peaks of Saddleworth in Manchester, saw the renovation of an old barn on a working farm where a key element of the barn’s transformation was the master bedroom which boasts an ensuite bathroom accessed through a stunning walk-in wardrobe. The project encompassed some of the leading names in today’s building industry, with Schlüter-Systems products creating the stylish and well-protected bathroom spaces. A grand feature within the home are the structural wooden beams that divide the bedroom and ensuite. The team spent a significant amount of time bringing the beams back to life creating a clear contrast between old and modern. With the support of CTH Joinery & Carpentry, the client specified a requirement for the renovation to meet the highest standards. To achieve this, the homeowner put their trust into the director of the company, Chris Halifax, by giving him free reign to develop his ideas and bring them to life. Warmth is key to achieving a luxurious feel in any space, and underfloor heating made it easy for that to be possible. Chris stripped everything back to start afresh, then installed SchlüterDITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS under the floor, providing added benefits of sound reduction and a fast warm up. Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT was also installed on the wall areas, ensuring the ensuite would be as welcoming as possible and to maximise comfort all over.
50
bikbbi.org.uk
For easy control, the voice activated DITRA-HEAT thermostat, DITRA-HEAT-ER6-E-was used. This, paired with the clients’ requirements to include surround-sound speakers and a TV at the end of the bath introduced an efficient and interactive element into the bathroom. Using Schlüter-KERDIBOARD in 19mm thickness, Chris was able to create a solid, entirely waterproof substrate to tile onto. Paired with this, the use of Schlüter-KERDI-COLL and sealing band Schlüter-KERDIFLEX was used to promise a dependable, secure waterproof solution.
It was important to the client that the renovation included some visual elements whilst still incorporating systems that are durable. The lighting profile, Schlüter-LIPROTEC, was used in neutral white to illuminate two beautiful niches, creating a stunning feature for the room. The use of SchlüterKERDI-KERECK also came of great benefit within the niches to ensure even the smallest of internal corners were protected. Once completed, the homeowner commented on how delighted they were with the work and the quality of Schlüter-Systems products. They understood the project would take a few months due to the intricate details involved and admitted that, once they first saw the progress, they couldn’t wait for it to be complete. Encapsulating the significance of carefully considered preparation through the use of Schlüter-Systems products, a remarkable finish to this ensuite has provided the homeowner with a luxurious and comforting space for many years ahead. www.schluter.co.uk

Classic Marble
...and counting For 40 years Classic Marble has made products used in the UK, Europe and the USA, with its factory in County Tyrone remaining a steadfast employer for locals since the 80’s… Paul has been with the company for over 30 years and reflected on what’s changed during that time: “When I started here there was no interview, someone told me that Classic Marble was hiring so I turned up and spoke to Donald [Hackett, the company’s first MD]. He told me I could start the following week and I’ve been here ever since. “We started out in an old chicken shed. After that burnt down, we moved into a few other structures until we purchased our current site where we now have this purpose-built space for us to work in.” Paul sits on a well-worn-in stool next to a machine making Classi Seal. The machine spins around as he effortlessly takes off the finished roll and starts to prep the machine for the next. It’s clear he’s done this a few times before. “I’ve been able to work pretty much every role here. I’ve mixed, packed and sprayed, I’ve been in the sales team, moulds and patterns and now Classi.” The company has had two Managing Directors in the last 40 years, starting with Donald who later passed the mantel on to his son, Christopher. “When you’ve been here since the age of 14 you end up doing nearly every job”, Christopher said. “The first thing I remember is that everybody seemed to be enjoying working in the
business. Until then I thought people only worked because they had to.” Paul also fondly remembers Christopher’s early days: “I remember Christopher was down here and expected to work just like the rest of us.” Christopher left the company when his education took him overseas but returned as MD in 2008. We asked what’s been the biggest change and the one constant at Classic Marble: “Taking control of our in-house marketing would be the biggest change. That is a monumental change to the business, we always relied on other people to do it who don’t know about the business, but now we have a team who know the business and the people who make the wheels go round! Something that hasn’t changed is our primary objective to make great products. The key to this is having a great team and high standards. Something we are known for.” While there is plenty of work to be done in the factory, Jolene has been working in (or close to) the office for nearly 25 years. When asked what roles she’s been in during her time at Classic Marble she replied: “From office admin to sales, making samples to office supervisor – basically everything.” Jolene now works hybrid, splitting her time between home and the office. “Flexibility and generosity towards the employees is why I’ve stayed at Classic
“We’ve never once stopped striving to be the best we can be, and I know that isn’t stopping any time soon”
Marble for so long. I’ve also found it rewarding to learn and do many different roles over the years,” Jolene states from her clutter-free desk, but it wasn’t always this way. “Since I started in the office, the biggest change is there is a lot less paperwork. Moving over to a paperless, more computerised system has made everything a lot quicker and more efficient. As for things that haven’t changed, despite the growth of the business over the years it’s still managed to maintain its family feel. Which is a testament to the Hackett Family.” Donald Hackett added: “It’s been an incredible 40 years where we’ve watched not only our family but the whole Classic Marble family grow from strength to strength. We’ve never once stopped striving to be the best we can be and I know that isn’t stopping any time soon.” www.senstecshowertray.com

Dispute Dispute resolution
AVOIDING THE COURTROOM In the first of a new series on the tricky topic of dispute resolution, Tracy Dilworth, senior dispute resolution officer at Dispute Assist, outlines a new era of legal solutions for the KBB industry In today’s challenging economic landscape, sole traders and small building firms face a barrage of obstacles. With inflation, the looming possibility of recession, labour shortages, stricter regulations, and heightened environmental standards, the last thing tradespeople need is to become embroiled in lengthy and stressful legal disputes with their customers. Fortunately, the days of settling such disputes in court are now a thing of the past, thanks to the emergence of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). The conventional route to resolving disputes in the court system can be painfully slow, with the average time to
settle a civil claim through the small claims system standing at a daunting 360.5 days. In contrast, ADR offers a lifeline, promising substantial time and cost-saving benefits, often delivering resolutions in mere days, not weeks.
SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS ADR? ADR encompasses a range of methods designed to resolve disputes between trades and customers that cannot be resolved at the complaint stage. These methods include “softer” options like mediation and conciliation, where a professional, impartial mediator facilitates a conversation between the parties involved, typically without creating a

Dispute resolution
“In a time when the courts appeared to be the only option for tradespeople in dispute with their customers, ADR now offers a diverse range of methods” legally binding agreement. Another ADR option is adjudication, which may involve an ombudsman, but the outcome generally binds only the business. Additionally, there is arbitration, where an independent arbitrator considers evidence from both sides to deliver a ruling. For those seeking a more formal process, there is expert determination. Here, an industry expert reviews the dispute, providing a legally binding decision. Expert determination tends to be quicker than arbitration, as the expert is well-acquainted with the nature of the dispute, eliminating the need for extensive explanations. These services can also be proactively included in service
58

contracts, ensuring that both home improvement professionals and their customers are prepared to address any potential disputes effectively.
THE BENEFITS OF ADR FOR KBB BUSINESSES
One of the most compelling aspects of ADR is its efficiency. At Dispute Assist, an ADR provider recognised by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, our trained and impartial dispute resolution officers have achieved an industry-leading average resolution time of just 5.2 days. The entire ADR process has a maximum resolution period of 90 days, significantly shorter than the 51.2 weeks it takes for a civil claim to progress
through the UK’s small claims court system. Extensions can be agreed upon if necessary and consented to by both parties. The financial burden of legal advice and court appearances can be overwhelming for small businesses. ADR offers an effective and cost-efficient alternative, sparing both parties from these expenses.
ENHANCING CUSTOMER SERVICE AND REPUTATION
Utilising ADR, especially expert determination, as a swift and effective dispute resolution method, can foster trust in tradespeople who incorporate it into their practices. Potential customers gain confidence, knowing that any future dispute will be handled professionally and efficiently. ADR also provides the option to keep all relevant information confidential, in stark contrast to courtroom proceedings where details are publicly disclosed. This allows businesses to preserve their brand reputation and minimise the impact on future sales. In addition, businesses that utilise an ADR provider are in compliance with the Consumer Rights Act of 2015. This act mandates that businesses selling to consumers must direct customers to an ADR provider if an in-house resolution is unattainable. In a time when the courts appeared to be the only option for tradespeople in dispute with their customers, ADR now offers a diverse range of methods. From mediation to expert determination, there is an ADR solution suitable for every dispute. Tradespeople can now focus on their work, reassured that any issues can be addressed quickly, smoothly, and at a reasonable cost. A new era of dispute resolution has arrived, paving the way for a more efficient and effective approach to handling disputes in the KBB industry should they arise.
