MISSION

To empower youth, advance health, and strengthen communities

VISION

To ensure that every child has access and opportunities to learn, that teens reach their full potential, and that our communities become healthier

MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP COMMUNITY IS EVERYTHING

Dear YMCA of the East Bay Community,

As we move further past the COVID-19 pandemic after nearly three years that has impacted everyone in so many ways, the existing disparities were magnified, disproportionately affecting those black and brown communities that were already marginalized. The YMCA of the East Bay is inspired, committed, and hopeful for the year ahead to ensure we continue our mission to empower youth, advance health, and strengthen communities.

During the pandemic, we’ve worked together with our volunteers to support our most vulnerable families and neighborhoods to serve our community by distributing food, organizing blood drives, pivoting our Y’s as early ballot drop-off locations, accessible voting stations, and providing digital learning hubs for the students who didn’t have the technology and resource to access their distance learning. The challenges brought by the impact of COVID-19 showcased the significant resilience of our association and community. They highlighted the critical ways our organization and staff can respond in times of crisis. We are so grateful for how our Board of Directors, Branch Advisory Board, corporate partners, government partners, donors, Y-members, staff, and volunteers stepped up to the challenges to serve our community and are committed to our mission for years to come.

This report highlights the impact in our three areas of focus - Early Childhood Impact, Youth Development, and Healthy Community. Despite all of the challenges, we’ve been able to add a new Early Learning Center in Cherryland by completing construction that will now serve up to 100 children in an area where childcare is critically important to help low-income families. Funding from Kaiser Permanente has allowed us to implement a trauma-informed system that provides staff and parents training and education on trauma-informed approaches and strategies. Funding also increased mental health providers’ capacity to meet children’s needs and offered site-based support systems at some of our Early Learning Centers. In Youth Development, with your help, we’ve raised more than $140,000 to provide scholarships to low-income families to send their children to summer day camp or overnight camp at Camp Loma Mar. As part of our Healthy Community, we provided nearly $400,000 in financial assistance to families unable to pay for branch memberships.

This year, we will build on our existing programs and services, expand our Early Learning Center footprint in the East Bay, and use our voice to continue to advocate at the federal, state, and county levels to ensure resources are allocated where the need is greatest. We will also work to advance efforts to recruit and retain quality early childcare educators, promote more robust connections between schools to expand learning to mitigate learning loss, slowly bring back in-person health programming to reduce chronic diseases, and offer sports programming for youth and adults.

We could not do what we do every single day to serve our community if it were not for the support, advocacy, volunteerism, and philanthropic gifts to the YMCA of the East Bay. Each of you plays an important role, and we’re grateful. We appreciate your commitment to our mission to ensure everyone reaches their full potential.

Forever Grateful,

EARLY CHILDHOOD IMPACT

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

AREAS of FOCUS

ENSURING EVERYONE CAN REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL

Our three areas of focus touch everyone. Our goal is to provide equitable access and opportunities to children, youth, and families from all communities, especially marginalized and underserved communities, to support the education, health, and well-being of every individual through various programs and services.

HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

EARLY CHILDHOOD IMPACT

BUILDING BRIGHTER FUTURES

Every child deserves a Head Start. Our Early Childhood Impact program provides high-quality child care and early learning for low-income families. Through our full-day, full-year programs serving children up to five years old, we ensure all of our kids enter kindergarten with the tools and support they need to thrive.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Launched a training webinar for Early Childhood Impact staff on “How to talk to families about the COVID-19 Vaccine” by inviting guest speaker Dr. Bechara Choucair, SVP & Chief Health Officer of Kaiser Permanente and former White House National Vaccine Coordinator

1.2K+ Children served through our Early Learning Centers

100% Families served to receive free childcare $34.9K Average cost per child 16+ Early Learning Centers throughout the East Bay

In May 2022, the YMCA of the East Bay distributed more than 834 laptops to children up to five years old in our Early Childhood Impact programs in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties through a Federal Communications Commission Emergency Connectivity Fund grant.

“By supporting families, we’re doing our part to help close the homework gap for families that lack internet or equipment access. This will ensure equitable access by providing every child with technology and connectivity access,” said Dr. Nailah Thompson, Board of Director Chair, YMCA of the East Bay.

OVER 50 EARLY EDUCATOR APPRENTICES GRADUATE FROM THE Y

In an effort to recruit and retain highly qualified staff, the YMCA Early Educator Apprentice program trains parents and community members to become early childhood teachers. The program also supports AA and BA acquisition for current employees The program features small cohorts for classes, tutoring, mental health consultation, soft skills training, and job placement to ensure a positive outcome.

The program receives funding from Alameda County First 5 and Social Services Agency (CalWORKs), Tipping Point Community, Sunlight Giving, and Bernard E. and Alba Witkin Charitable Foundation.

CHERRYLAND EARLY LEARNING CENTER CONSTRUCTION COMPLETED

The construction of a new Early Learning Center in Cherryland, an unincorporated community in Alameda County located next to Hayward, opened to children and families late 2022. Cherryland has one of the highest needs and lowest services per capita in Alameda County, with limited community services and childcare offerings.

Through support from government grant funding from the Department of Health and Human Services, the California Department of Education, the Alameda County, William G. Irwin Charity Foundation, Sunlight Giving, Skip Battle, and the Ellebie Mathis Fund, the Y completed construction of Cherryland Early Learning Center that can serve up to 100 children up to five years old and their families, with 10 percent reserved slots for children with disabilities.

TEENS THINK BIG WITH COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT

Youth representatives from the Fremont Youth & Government delegation last June attended the YMCA Annual Youth Governors Conference in Washington, D.C., where they presented their Bay Area Drain Initiative (BADI) project.

To address storm and drain pollution in Bay Area communities, BADI collaborates with local government to label storm drains with QR codes that link to information and resources regarding pollution in Bay Area wetlands. This project was made possible by the Y-USA Amazon Changemakers grant.

25 Y-SCHOLARS GRADUATES ARE COLLEGE BOUND

25 high school seniors in May 2022 graduated from the Y-Scholars Program at the YMCA of the East Bay Teen Center. Every Y-Scholars Program graduate entered college last fall, attending community colleges and four-year universities, such as Stanford University, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, San Francisco State University, and Sacramento State University.

“We’re so excited to welcome families and friends to celebrate our Y-Scholars with in-person graduation after being unable to celebrate the last two years. These students have worked so hard the last two years during the pandemic by having to pivot to remote learning and adapt back to in-person instruction. The Y-Scholars have been patient, resilient, and focused on ensuring their success. I’m so proud of every student,” Audi Huang, Executive Director of the Teen Center.

CAMPERSHIP SPOTLIGHT: MEET THE VADEN FAMILY

Life hasn’t always been easy for the Vaden Family of nine. W. Vaden (father), a marine veteran, has been living with PTSD and an injured ankle from his military days. Although his seven kids didn’t grow up in military life, they learned about their dad’s military service and how to help their dad overcome PTSD and anxiety situations.

The Vaden kids have always wanted to go camping, but it wasn’t until the Vaden family learned about Camp Loma Mar they talked about Camp Corral, a nonprofit that transforms the lives of children of wounded, ill, and fallen military heroes by providing camp, advocacy, and enrichment programs. Camp Loma Mar and Camp Corral have partnered for years to provide camp experiences for children of military families.

“With a family of 9, it just wasn’t really possible to send all my kids to camp. How do you pick one or two to send and not all of my children? If it wasn’t for camperships, I wouldn’t have been able to send my kids to camp. The kids learned so much from camp. I love the self-confidence my kids came back with. The smiles on their faces when they talked about the friends they made and even counselors, including people they met from other states and other countries,” Mrs. Vaden said.

A VISIT FROM THE PAST:1968-72 STAFF REUNION

Camp Loma Mar in June 2022 welcomed a reunion of nearly 40 former camp staff from 1968-1972, ranging from counselors to nurses and directors. The camp staff reunion started by reminiscing on those days past, sharing photos and stories, and hearing what everyone has been up to since the last gathering six years ago.

“It was so much fun to see everyone who attended the reunion after all these years. While many of us stayed in touch with each other, it was quite a treat to catch up with others whom we haven’t seen in many years,” said Bud Sheble, former Camp Director in charge of planning efforts for this camp reunion.

Ryan James, Camp Executive Director, greeted former staff guests and conducted a camp tour by highlighting all of the upgrades and improvements, including the most recent cabin renovations. The day ended by gathering together at the Camp Fire Bowl and singing camp songs with the help of Kathy Catanho, Anne Casey, Larry Benevento, and others.

“Everyone fell right into the groove singing; you couldn’t tell any difference from over 50 years ago,”Bud said.

To commemorate the legacy of the former Camp Loma Mar staff, a campaign to renovate the Camp Fire Bowl was announced and has raised more than $52,200. The Camp Fire Bowl renovation will include new seating, increased capacity, disability access, a new stage, and lightning. A plaque with a list of all donors will be displayed at the Camp Fire Bowl.

CAMP LOMA MAR CABIN UPGRADES

Twelve cabins were renovated last year, thanks to our donors who sponsored the cabin renovations, as well as a new road paved into camp, a new flagpole, and much more. We still have more work to beautify the camp and make it more accessible and inclusive. With your help, we can achieve these goals and more.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE A MESSAGE OF GRATITUDE TO OUR DONORS

Dear YMCA of the East Bay Community,

The past fiscal year has been challenging for many people, especially families from marginalized communities. In many ways, 2021 and 2022 felt like a transition year (with still uncertainty) where many working adults returned to in-person work or adjusted their work schedules to hybrid (remote/in-person); students back to school for in-person instruction; events are back to inperson with optional masking; and at the YMCA of the East Bay, Y-members slowly returning to the gym as well as program offerings. Throughout all, the community has stepped forward to help one another. I extend my gratitude to our generous donors, including our Y-members, who came forward during the height of the pandemic to volunteer their time and make philanthropic gifts to support our programs and services.

Our philanthropic supporters contributed nearly $2.15M from more than 1,924 gifts from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022. We hope you are as proud as we are of what we’ve accomplished in the last fiscal year. Because of you, we awarded Day and Overnight Camperships (scholarships) to students; continued to operate our programs and services to children, families, and teens at no cost or subsidized cost; and upgraded facilities at Camp Loma Mar and Early Learning Centers throughout the East Bay. Thank you to the thousands of donors for your support and for partnering with us to fulfill our mission to Empower Youth, Advance Health, and Strengthen Communities.

Forever grateful,

OUR DONORS

We are so grateful to our philanthropic supporters who made contributions between July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022, are recognized for their gifts below.

Every effort has been made to list donors accurately. We apologize if we inadvertently omitted or listed your name incorrectly. Please email development@ymcaeastbay.org to let us know.

HOW TO GIVE BACK

BECOME A YMCA OF THE EAST BAY DONOR TODAY

Support from donors like you make it possible to continue our mission to provide programs and services that thousands of families, seniors, children, and youth depend on at the YMCA of the East Bay. We have many options for making your gift to the YMCA of the East Bay:

• Join the President’s Club with a gift of $1,500

• Join the 365Y Club: By making a monthly contribution, you will be recognized as part of this club.

• Included us in your Planned Giving? Let us know! You’ll automatically join the Heritage Club

• Have a car to donate? Contact us.

• Gifts of appreciated securities, stocks, and bonds can provide considerable tax advantages when transferred to the YMCA of the East Bay before they are sold—creating an income tax deduction and avoiding the capital gains tax that would have been due upon their sale if held more than a year.

Contact Manny Nungaray, Chief Development Officer, at mnungaray@ymcaeastbay.org to discuss your giving goals.

PARTNERS IN ADVOCACY OUR VOLUNTEERES & LEADERSHIP

SHARING EXCITING UPDATES

CEO FRAN GALATTI SELECTED FOR GOVERNOR’S ADVISORY COUNCIL

We are so excited to share with you all that Governor Newsom has appointed our very own Fran Gallati to serve on the newly formed Advisory Council for Physical Fitness and Mental Well-Being. He will join notable athletes and experts to focus on increasing awareness about the benefits of physical activity, sports, nutrition, and mental wellness; encouraging intergenerational physical fitness activities; and promoting equitable access to outdoor and physical activities for underserved communities. We’re thrilled the YMCA can bring more health and wellness opportunities for kids and adults across California.

Read the full announcement here.

WELCOME NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEMBERS

YMCA of the East Bay welcomes the appointment of two new members to the Board of Directors. “I’m so thrilled to have two incredible individuals say ‘yes’ to joining our Board. They both have strong financial and investment experiences, an area of skill sets where we can expand and tap into their expertise and experience to ensure financial growth and sustainability for our organization,” said Fran Gallati.

Joining the Board are Allen Carr and Scott Stafford. Read their background here.
