YOUTH DEVELOPMENT DEVELOPING FUTURE LEADERS

After-school hours are pivotal for youth in low-income neighborhoods when most parents work. Every day after school ends, the Y provides safe spaces for youth to cultivate their social and emotional growth, build healthy relationships, strengthen academic enrichment, and develop leadership skills through program offerings.

• Expanded Learning Program Partnering with school districts to offer youth academic enrichment through homework support, outside sports, and exercise sessions

• Summer Day Camp Offering youth outdoor play, reading, games, and activities centered around STEAM to minimize summer learning loss

• Youth & Government Teaching youth about civic engagement

• Y-Scholars 4-year college readiness program

Teens Think Big With Community Service Project

Youth representatives from the Fremont Youth & Government delegation last June attended the YMCA Annual Youth Governors Conference in Washington, D.C., where they presented their Bay Area Drain Initiative (BADI) project.

To address storm and drain pollution in Bay Area communities, BADI collaborates with local government to label storm drains with QR codes that link to information and resources regarding pollution in Bay Area wetlands. This project was made possible by the Y-USA Amazon Changemakers grant.

25 Y-SCHOLARS GRADUATES ARE COLLEGE BOUND

25 high school seniors in May 2022 graduated from the Y-Scholars Program at the YMCA of the East Bay Teen Center. Every Y-Scholars Program graduate entered college last fall, attending community colleges and four-year universities, such as Stanford University, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, San Francisco State University, and Sacramento State University.

“We’re so excited to welcome families and friends to celebrate our Y-Scholars with in-person graduation after being unable to celebrate the last two years. These students have worked so hard the last two years during the pandemic by having to pivot to remote learning and adapt back to in-person instruction. The Y-Scholars have been patient, resilient, and focused on ensuring their success. I’m so proud of every student,” Audi Huang, Executive Director of the Teen Center.
