T

he National Hairdressing Apprenticeship has been developed as a new statutory apprenticeship by Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board and a consortium of industry representative bodies such as the The Hairdressing Council, Image Skillnet, Synergy Hair Group, Irish Hairdressing Federation as well as employers such as Peter Mark, Wayne Lloyd and Catherine Cusack. The programme is the only nationally recognised standard for hairdressers in Ireland. Apprentices who successfully complete the programme achieve a Level 6 Major Award on the National Framework of Qualifications, with certification awarded by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI). The National Hairdressing Apprenticeship is a minimum of 3 years in duration and will provide the industry with some much needed stimulus in recruiting new apprentices to an attractive career in hairdressing, with a nationallyrecognised qualification. The apprenticeship, newlyvalidated by QQI in September 2019, is aimed at school leavers who have completed their Leaving Certificate, early school leavers who have at least 2 years’ fulltime experience in a salon, or mature applicants who wish to pursue a career in hairdressing or change their profession. The training will take place on a day-release basis for students, placing them in the salon environment for a further 4 days per week under the guidance of a salon mentor. Apprentices on the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship will be employed by a range of hairdressing salons, both large and small. An employer who wishes to register an apprentice must first be approved by SOLAS, the Further Education and Training Authority. They begin this process by registering an expression of interest on http://hairdressingapprenticeship.ie/. From there they will be contacted by the apprenticeship team to take them 6

through the simple registration process. Apprentices must secure employment with a SOLAS-approved employer and meet the programme entry requirements. The employer can then start the apprentice registration process with SOLAS. Suzanne Kiely is the National Programme Co-ordinator for the new National Hairdressing Apprenticeship. She says: “This apprenticeship heralds a positive change in approach to the education and training of hairdressers in Ireland. It is a real game-changer for the industry in Ireland and now represents the national standard for hairdressers in Ireland. The programme is an innovative employer-led undertaking, which has its finger on the pulse of what is required by the hairdressing industry of today.” The new programme doesn’t take the training out of the hands of the employer. It instead complements their in-salon training while increasing the apprentice’s personal and academic confidence, developing highly skilled employees who can work autonomously and develop levels of self-awareness, linking their classroom learning with the challenges they will face in the industry. This will give them a clear path from entry to qualification, something which has been lacking in many instances up until now.

7

Colleges and Centres Currently Offering the Apprenticeship The Further Education and Training Centre Raheen Campus, Limerick acts as the flagship for the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship and led out with the pilot programme in 2019. Manager, Kevin Bartley, said: “Raheen Campus has deep roots within the hairdressing industry and among local employers that span over 40 years. During that time the campus has maintained fantastic placement figures for its learners of over 80%. Learners secure exciting careers within the hairdressing industry and many go on to owning their own salon or becoming educators of the next generation of hairdressers.” Kevin and the team are very excited about rolling out a further two classes this year in the newlyrefurbished salon at the campus where they will deliver the off-the-job training and education.

8

Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education (CDCFE) has provided hairdressing training for over 30 years. The college also offers Traineeships, as well as PreApprenticeships and the Apprenticeship in Hairdressing, all delivered in a state-of-the-art salon in the college’s Kilbarrack Campus. Noreen Reilly, Principal of Waterford College of Further Education, is delighted to be adding the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship to the extensive suite of programmes on offer by the college. The college has an ethos of developing confidence and nurturing creativity. Students are supported and encouraged to enter hairdressing competitions, and the college boasts numerous winners over the years including a medal winner in the Ireland Skills Live Competition 2019. Further Education and Training Centre Tallaght has a proud track record of delivering a wide range of statutory apprenticeships. Over the years the centre has

maintained strong relationships with employers in Dublin and around the regions. Manager Wesley George is thrilled to be rolling out the apprenticeship in their newly renovated salon and is looking forward to seeing it go from strength to strength over the coming years. Further Education and Training Centre Finglas is located off the Jamestown Road in Finglas, Dublin 11. The Centre provides full, part-time, evening, apprenticeship and community based courses for up to 500+ students. The centre has an excellent track record in training hairdressers. Teresa Cheevers and the team are very excited to have added the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship to their extensive suite of programmes and look forward to training and educating the apprentices their custom designed salon. St. John’s Central College in Cork is over the moon to be rolling out the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship. The college is no stranger to training hairdressers, indeed many of the newly registered apprentices in 2020 came from employers who themselves cut their teeth in

St. John’s over the years. Paula McCarthy and the team were delighted to see their hairdressing family grow as they welcomed the newly registered apprentices into the college in November 2020. This is only the beginning of the nationwide launch which will expand even further in 2021! Education and Training Boards all over Ireland are on board to support the delivery of this innovative apprenticeship.

An apprenticeship incentivisation scheme is currently available for employers who register an apprentice up to the end of June 2021. Employers wishing to find out more can submit an expression of interest at www.hairdressingapprenticeship.ie

The Hairdressing Council of Ireland (“the Council”) was set up as a ‘Not for Profit’ organisation to have a fresh approach to what was needed within the entire Hairdressing sector. Progressive thinkers, with open minds, and a genuine selfless interest came together and formed the executive committee. Primarily, the aim was for a National Apprenticeship which has now happened and the second term students have started. There were other issues including keeping VAT at 9% VAT. Covid issues are of course front and centre now. The first President of the organisation was Bridget Haren. Followed by a 2 year term by Sean Taaffe.

We are proud members of the OMC World Organisation and manage our Team Ireland Hairdressing group. If you wish to enter the on-line European Championships and get ready for the next World Championships Contact us on: www.hairdressingcouncil.ie

David Murray Irish Icon, Joico Europe Educator In conversation with Irish Hairdresser.

IH: Explain who you are and what you do David: I am a Joico Europe Educator. Twenty one years ago I married Eilish and we have 3 children Adam, Cameron and Charlie. I own my own salon in Drogheda ‘David Murray Hair’. I am hairdressing a long time, 33 years actually. I started when I was 16. I pestered Peter Mark in Drogheda for a job until finally at 16 I got it. I am now 48 and still as passionate as I was then. I wouldn’t want to be working at anything else.

IH: Tell us more about Eilish as we say “behind every great man there is a great partner”. David: Yes, she is great. Eilish trained as a bookkeeper but five years ago decided to do something completely different. So she went and trained as a phabotomist (someone who takes blood in a hospital) and absolutely loves her job now. She works at Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan and is now working all the hours possible on the front line for the Covic 19 pandemic. I am so proud of her.

IH: What is your role with Joico? David: My role with is ‘Educator for Joico Europe’. Twelve years ago when I was asked initially to try out the Joico products by David Donnellan of Xpert Professional, I said no as I didn’t know anything about the brand. Joico sent educators to me for a couple of days and I wasn’t ready to commit. They came back again and then yes, I was then definitely interested.

IH: How are you coping with the pandemic and isolation? David: Eilish has me power-washing everything and keeping me busy. I also have the children so it’s nice to have that time with them. My favourite pastime is running and I run a lot. I should have been doing a marathon soon but it was cancelled. When I run it clears my mind and lets me focus on one thing…that’s when I plan what my next photoshoot will be, what I will do for my next stage show or plan my next tutorial.

IH: Why? David: I was to help backstage at a Joico Show in Dublin. 500 people had bought tickets. Hair Icons Damian Carney and Sue Pemberton were the stage artists. I got an early call to get to Dublin asap as I would have to take Damians place that evening on stage as he was ill. I was shocked and said no way! People are coming to see Damian. I worked really hard that day and finally I was told I was ‘doing the show’ not just working backstage! I loved being on the stage that night. I was told I did a great job by many. I was happy. Next day I got a bigger surprise I was offered the job as Educator for Joico Europe.! WOW. A long time before that day Team Ireland Manager Maeve O’Healy-Harte said that I should consider being a platform artist that I would be great on stage. At that time I couldn’t image it. But… she is always right ! I started doing some stage work for Irish Hairdresser and was voted Best Platform Artist so it gave me the push I needed. I now spend my working life travelling throughout Europe for Joico on stage and still keeping my own clientele happy in my salon. What more could I wish for!

14

IH: What advice would you have for hairdressers who are at home isolating and bored. David: You should never be bored. There is just so much free education demonstrations and business seminars on the internet at the moment. Improve your skills. Everyone has a mannequin at home. Take it out and repurpose it. Remember mannequins never complain and have lots of time and patience with their stylist. Go on learn something new! Think about competiting abroad. I won several awards and medals during my journey with Team Ireland. It’s great for honing your skills under restrictive time limits and specific rules and guidelines. IH: What was your Favourite Award you received? David: There are a few. I received a Knighthood from Intercoiffure Mondial in Paris. That was a very proud moment. I am now one of only five in Ireland to have this world award. Also, I love my ‘Hall of Fame’ Award from Irish Hairdresser ‘BEST of the BEST’. I won the competition three times and then the following year was awarded the ‘Hall of Fame’. Lastly my two Alternative Hair Awards for having two of my own Hair Shows at the Royal Albert Hal, London.

Digital Salon launches NEW initiative

‘Support Your Local Salon’ Digital Salon, website and software provider to hair and beauty salons, launches a new initiative: ‘Support Your Local Salon’ to direct sale enquiries from customers to their local salons through a bespoke website www.supportyourlocalsalon.ie Digital Salon has launched ‘Support Your Local Salon’, an initiative designed to help Irish salons who have online shops to be found by existing and potential customers in their area through a new website www. supportyourlocalsalon.ie The website has been developed and launched completely free of charge by Digital Salon and allows consumers to search for a local hair or beauty salon based in their region or county and will be shown all the salons in their area with online shops that they can click directly onto. “Our goal here is to drive customers to their local salons’ online stores to boost their retail sales. Obviously, an added advantage is that it will keep salon customers from going to default online offshore options. We want to make it is as easy as possible to buy online but still buy local, there’s a definite pandemic-related purchase patriotism movement out there and we need to facilitate that”, said John Donnelly, MD of Digital Salon. John noted that, heretofore, hair and beauty salon owners have been so busy in their salons that they wouldn’t have had the time to focus on getting their websites and online

16

shops active. But he observed that Covid-19 has made it imperative to have an online shop and website, while lockdown closures ironically have given salons the time needed to get their online operation fit-for-purpose. During the first lockdown, Digital Salon launched an initiative to help salon owners set up their business online by offering a free website landing page enabling them to sell gift cards. This initiative helped many salons that had previously had no online presence and generated badly-needed income. Digital Salon creates award-winning websites and provides the salon software Shortcuts, to the hair and beauty sector. They partner with Hair Salons, Beauty Salons, Nail Bars, Clinics, MUAs, Barbers and Spas and help them build and manage their digital presence. It is owned by a team of professionals with digital expertise and extensive experience in the hair and beauty sector working with over 500 leading salons across Ireland and the UK. The company also offers Digital Signage, Social Media Management and Online Marketing services. The new website is free of charge and salons are invited to register their business from today by visiting www.supportyourlocalsalon.ie “All operations of the site are non-profit making and traffic is driven to it through Pay-Per-Click and paid Social Media advertising and sponsorship”, confirmed John.

T

he world has turned into a scene from a horror movie, masked zombies riot the streets of the emerald isle, a deadly virus fills the air and threatens to wipe out mankind. The streets are empty and the shops are closed. The world is one big ghost town! If I’d have told you this before 2019 you’d think I was talking about the plot to a movie and maybe one day it will be? But we lived, not all of unfortunately, many of us lost loved ones, and are still living in this world! Salons across the country have been closed half of the year and I’d really like to take a moment for the salons that didn’t survive, maybe they couldn’t cope financially, maybe it was too stressful in this new world order, maybe it was just their time. I applaud you for making the tough decision to close your doors as when faced with difficult decisions, I had to close one of my salons and it was a tough choice to make. As the government fed us with information and facts we became more and more confused and disillusioned and I for one didn’t understand half of it. The mental health of our industry plummeted and it’s been desperate to watch. We took to our beds and hid from the world, me included! It’s been, personally, one of my most difficult years! But then I saw a change, hairdressers who once wouldn’t share their secrets online, free of charge, helping the hair and beauty industry rise to its feet. Organisations came together for the greater good to see how to solve the problems facing us. Educators created free training platforms for all, salons communicated with their staff in Zoom meetings, Industry experts gave advice that would usually cost a fortune! Salons created new business through online stores, we communicated with our clients even though we couldn’t see them. I won world’s best stylist, Barber of the Year, and became the new President of the Hairdressing Council! What was happening, this wasn’t the usual state of play? I’ll tell you what happened, we adapted, we moved on, we came together as an industry and fought for our right to be fabulous. The press called out for us, clients begged us to come back to work, we worked harder, longer, tougher, stronger and we got the job done! We were appreciated by all. And then news of a vaccine, is this good news, let’s hope so. Then Boom! Another level 5 Lockdown with figures higher than ever. As we go through these awful times again, remember, we will return and get through this together. Why? because we’re ‘Super Heroes’, we’re ‘Hairdressers’ and on a daily basis we can do anything!

Remembering... During 2020 we were notified of some great people we lost from our industry here in Ireland... ANTHONY MURRAY

JERRY HUDSON

“Anthony was a complete gentleman and so easy to work with. He was a most complete hairdresser, a client’s dream be it for a wedding or a regular salon visit. An expert in all aspects, not only in the salon but also in the teaching arena. I worked with Anthony on many teaching situations, in-salon for Schwarzkopf accounts, academy-based seminars in both Ireland and the UK, and stage presentations. Anthony was always courteous, even when things were not as he wished, no throwing toys out of the pram. Affable, Attentive, Respectful, Well Mannered, Thoughtful. Just a few words to describe this Skilled hairdresser. I am proud to be amongst his many friends, and will miss him, RIP Anthony.” - ( Peter Munton )

“I’ve known Jerry for over 30 years and in all that time he was a constant entertainer with his mischievous sense of humour. Jerry was one of those special individuals you might be lucky to meet once during your lifetime. He was many things, a perfectionist, a true master craftsman of hairdressing, humble and modest despite his flamboyance (he was always dressed immaculately, head to toe in top designers). He was utterly devoted to his wife Mary and their children Karl and Victoria and besotted with his grandchildren. Jerry is sorely missed and a great loss to all who knew him right around the country” - ( John Russell )

“During my first trip to a national hair competition I saw Anthony working on his models and was fixated on his skill, precision and the final result. I wanted to compete from that day. Thank you Anthony for your inspiration. Rest in peace - (Maeve O’Healy-Harte)

SHARON McGUIGAN Sharon Mc Guigan was born to be a hairdresser. A master of her trade with the ability to teach many. Her scissors took her to many places Sligo, Carrick-On-Shannon, and to Dublin working for Robert Chambers but her grá was her home town of Clones and there her business has been thriving for 40 years. A legend and pillar of her community, known for her kindness and generosity by all. Her salon was her hub for everything she achieved and loved and on her final journey over a thousand people applauded her as she was carried by for the last time. It was a hair standing moment her family will never forget. She is deeply missed”. - ( Morganna Audley ) “I met, lived with and worked with Sharon in Sligo many, many years ago. Her laughter, energy and fun nature during our time together made her someone you couldn’t possibly forget. I have lots of great memories. Rest now Sharon” xx - ( Maeve O’Healy-Harte )

“Jerry & Mary gave me my start in hairdressing, I spent the first 3 years of my career as an apprentice in Jerrys Hair Studio on Careys Lane in Cork. Jerry was a mentor and coach to me during those formative years and I can certainly credit my attention to detail and high standards to him. It was such a great pleasure to have the ability to work with Jerry and Mary and their talented team in the salon for so many years when I worked as Education Leader in Ireland. The evolvement in our relationship was very special and I valued the opportunity to support Jerry and Mary with their business. Jerry is a huge loss to us all – the Irish hairdressing community has lost a true legend” - ( Sinéad O’Sullivan, Global Wella Education )

JOHN MAHER “I was truly sorry to see the loss of a very dear friend John Maher. John helped and guided, educated and mentored so many incredible hairdressers within our industry. He gave so much opportunity to many wanting to embark on their hairdressing future. He was the life and soul of a salon. Bringing laughter and joy to everyone. I was fortunate enough to have worked alongside John who brought me confidence and courage to stand on many stages when he was present! We were very lucky to have had John bring his knowledge and expertise to Hairdressing Live on several occasions. John leaves a massive mark on so many of us. He will live on in our memories forever” - ( Paul Davey ) “I worked with John Maher many years ago and greatly admired his work. He had a lovely calmness about him but at the same time was witty to the extent of being hilarious and fun to be with. He was a great educator and generous to all with his knowledge. He will be missed but not forgotten in the industry.” - ( Maeve O’Healy-Harte )

IMAGINE… T

he Alternative Hair Show is committed to raising much needed funds for Fighting Leukemia whilst at the same time finding and promoting artistic hairdressers from all over the world.

The charity was set up by Alternative Hair founder, Tony Rizzo to support Leukemia Research programmes. Tony Rizzo has presented the Alternative Hair Show every year since 1983 and the 2020 Alternative Hair Show, however the 38thshow should have taken place in October. However due to the Covid19 Pandemic it made travel difficult and large group gatherings forbidden. But, Tony Rizzo is a man with a Mission! As people couldn’t attend the show, he decided he would bring it virtually to the world. So by discussing his plans with hair & IT experts the First Virtual Hair Event, IMAGINE took place on October 11th 2020. “It was an unforgettable, interactive show, where we shared inspiring presentations from world-renowned artists. At the same time we were supporting the Fighting Leukemia Foundation as the Alternative Hair Show 2020 was broadcasted via pay-per-view, so the audience donated to continue funding the fight against Leukemia. We presented 24 of the most creative and imaginative Artistic Hair Teams in the world.” said Tony Rizzo. Supported by the same production team he has worked with over the years, as well as Alternative Hair Show Global President, Anthony Mascolo, Tony presented an incredible show that inspired the world. The event also included virtual finalists of the International Visionary Awards with the winners announced live.

All that was needed to be done was to IMAGINE you were in London while watching the show at home!

CAVIAR Anti-Aging PRODUCTS

A healthy scalp and beautifully full, healthy hair. ALTERNA, the visionary creator of luxury haircare products formulated without harsh chemicals and additives, is proud to announce a powerful new iteration of its CAVIAR Anti-Aging Clinical Densifying collection. Created specifically to meet the needs of the fine and thinning hair consumer, this line includes updated formulations that enhance the performance of its Shampoo, Scalp Treatment and Styling Mousse and brings to market a revolutionary new Foam Conditioner. The core densifying regime – Shampoo, Foam Conditioner and Scalp Treatment – has been proven through in-salon use, to help improve the scalp’s natural barrier and has been found to significantly improve hair texture, thickness and condition. The new Foam Conditioner has been designed to increase volume and density to make hair appear fuller Fine and thinning hair along with hair loss is a concern of many consumers globally. With this enormous audience largely ignored by luxury beauty brands, ALTERNA has bridged the gap, offering its problem-solving Clinical Densifying products. ALTERNA has built its collection upon two key insights gained directly from women with thinning hair: they want a range of styling options and they want solutions that build fullness and thickness by improving hair density from the scalp up. “A healthy scalp and beautifully full, healthy hair are points of pride and a source of confidence. But as hair thins, as it does for millions of people, pride and confidence can give way to self-doubt and emotional distress.

While some mass and medical brands cater to consumers with thinning hair, we realized that this huge audience was largely unserved by the luxury haircare market. We created our newest incarnation of CAVIAR Clinical Densifying products to elevate this distressing chore into a truly transformative, healthy, sensorial experience – grounded in science, that can improve the quality, texture and volume of their hair to help them look and feel beautiful and confident again.”

Unity without uniformity and diversity without fragmentation.

UNITY IN DIVERSITY is used as an expression of harmony and unity between dis-similar individuals or groups. It is a concept of “unity without uniformity and diversity without fragmentation” that shifts focus from unity based on a mere tolerance of physical, cultural, linguistic, social, religious, political, ideological and/or psychological differences towards a more complex unity based on an understanding that difference enriches human interactions” The collection “UNITY IN DIVERSITY” showcases diversification within current & upcoming male hair trends & the sense of unity within the multicultural society of Melbourne, Australia. “My key objectives when executing this series of haircuts was to produce a varied range of styles which are both suitable & functional to my idea of the modern male, but with my own creative edge. The choice of style & technique used throughout derived from the idea of complimenting & strengthening male features. In turn this highlights my own vision & technical ability. The inspiration for this collection comes from my time spent in Melbourne & the people in which I’ve had relationships with on my journey. Melbourne as a city is extremely multicultural & the population are very expressive - hence the “Diversity”. The openness to this expression is where the “Unity” stems from. Although everybody’s shell on the outside differs, there is an overwhelming sense of companionship in the community which shines through.

48

Each image could almost be representative of a suburb or area in Melbourne, which is left to the viewers perception. The “Unity” within my collection is shown through the choice of colour throughout & the “Diversity” is displayed in the type of clothing chosen for each individual. This represents & highlights each of my models unique personalities & character with the colour giving them a “uniform” type look. Their ethnicity, sense of fashion & way of life are all so different but they are united in location & choice of colour. Black was the colour chosen as often black has been described to me as the “Melbourne uniform” & the neon blue & purple comes from the city’s beautiful skyline at night.

ASHES of PHANTASM “Ashes of Phanasm is the beautifully grotesque, the process of metamorphosis and rebirth that occurs through the life cycle of a Chrysalis. The Beauty of the final form emerges from the ashes like a phoenix. I wanted this collection to be raw but high fashion. I was inspired by Alexander McQueen and Philip Treacy collaborations of the 90’s to resemble living art where the models and headpieces merge seamlessly as one.” Paul Mac 52
