Reflect your true dimension. Semi di Lino Blonde and Brunette are the new lines dedicated to blonde and brunette hair: they prolong the intensity and shine of colour while counteracting the effects of blue light and neutralising unwanted tones, for salon-fresh looking hair that lasts.

Editorial As I write this editorial, we are witnessing the tragedy of war unfold before our very eyes, only a relatively short distance from where we live. The devastation to lives and communities that it has caused within the first week alone is frightening to watch, with over a million people already fleeing Ukraine to neighbouring countries for safety. Nothing we might have felt over the past two years of pandemic compares to the threat, lived experience and consequences of war. As professional hairdressers, many of us know, or have worked with, gifted colleagues from the countries involved in this war. Let’s go out of our way to support these friends and colleagues in these awful and bewildering times. Bearing in mind the utter turmoil that Ukraine is experiencing right now, and the shadow that is being cast over peace and security across the world, it is difficult to speak about life returning somewhat to “normal” in our salons after the restrictions of the past two years, when war is raging a short plane-ride from us. But such is the reality of life, and I applaud the resilience, positivity and determination of the sector to build back their businesses, and provide the highest standards of creativity and service to their clients, as they did before the pandemic hit us all in 2020. Of course there are still many challenges for salon owners in recruiting and retaining staff. Hopefully the new apprenticeship scheme, if promoted by career guidance teachers, will encourage more school leavers to take up hairdressing as a professional career through their CAO options. Since our last publication, a light went out in our cosmos when our much-loved colleague Darren Lacken passed away suddenly. What a shock to everyone! As a former member of Team Ireland, Darren was a hugely talented and award-winning hairdresser who will be remembered for his great personality, talent and style. Rest now, Darren. In this issue we head north-west to Sligo for our Salon Focus, and we go way down under to Melbourne Australia for our interview with Eoin McCarthy, who has made a huge impression there. We also take a look at the Employer of the Year Awards, which acknowledge resilience and leadership. And finally, two requests for help. Firstly, we are looking for individuals or companies to become ‘Friends of the Irish HAIRDRESSER’ in order to help us progress both the content and the viability of this magazine, as we approach our landmark 100th edition. If this is of interest, please let us know. Secondly, we are trying to find the oldest / longest working barber & hairdresser in Ireland. Can you help us find him/her? Until we meet again, Maeve O’Healy-Harte

Has it been worth it? ABSOLUTELY! This amazing space was completed in November 2019 and was just open over 3 months when Covid struck. “The amount of people that said how tough it was for us to be closed after investing so much in the salon but every day we are thankful we did this project as we have so much space and both staff and clients feel so safe particularly in these times” said Anthony. The salon design and fit out was an integral part of the build, most of which was sourced locally. The much admired salon styling units, chairs and massage basins were supplied by David Donnellan of Xpert Professional, the quality and design of which give a wow feel to the salon. As Anthony is a Alfaparf Nexxt Generation Educator, Salon 2 is one of the main stockists of popular brands such as Alfaparf, Joico, WOW, Actyva and Moroccan Oil. The first floor of the salon was designed to accommodate The Academy @ Salon 2 which thankfully is back in action this year as the Alfaparf Education Team provides ongoing training and upskilling to hairdressers in the North West. This bright spacious area is the perfect space for teaching and learning. As Salon 2 has a highly skilled award winning bridal team , the Academy space is also ideal for bridal parties where brides can relax with their family and friends in their own private space. “WOW, amazing, so modern, spacious”– some of the many words used to describe Salon 2 in Sligo after its massive extension and refurbishment in 2019. For owners Anthony and Deirdre Kilcoyne, it had been a hectic six years of negotiating to secure the sale through to final development. floor and behind the scenes. The support of the team is vital for the success of the salon and the energy and buzz is immediately evident on entering the salon. “While COVID has been tough on all businesses the support from our team really helped us get through it all. This included working together to research and source our own brand of The Secret hair extensions while also gaining VTCT accreditation for the Academy. We also set up our own private education page where our senior stylists put videos up so our trainee team could continue to upskill during lockdown. This was a massive success as hairdressers are so creative, I felt we struggled when that was taken away from us,” said Anthony. The future is certainly bright and exciting for Salon 2 and with a such a progressive team working in such a bright, fun environment, lets bring it on.

THE SEARCH IS ON FOR THE NEXT GenNOW TEAM The Wella Professionals GenNOW team is recognised as one of the greatest up and coming talent teams in the hairdressing industry, and the search is now on for the new 2022/23 team. The search is on for 5 creative stylists who can demonstrate skills in a multitude of hair textures. Knowing the Wella product portfolio is crucial and being a key team player is a must. The opportunity is open to all stylists 18 years of age and over, with 3-8 years’ experience, based in the UK or Ireland. It’s not essential to be salon based; freelance hairdressers are welcome to apply, but a strong digital profile is a major advantage, with a passion for cutting, colouring and styling combined. The lucky chosen 5 stylists will embark on an incredible 12-month creative journey with four inspiring mentors who have been selected for their specific expertise. The mentoring team comprises Michael Gray who will be the digital mentor, Jordanna Cobella – the creative colour mentor, Syd Hayes who will focus on session styling, and education mentor, Nikki Clifford who will prepare them for

educating the next generation of hairdressers. This incredible group will mentor the team to develop their skills, build their profile and share their invaluable experiences. Being part of GenNOW will open doors to a wide range of educational opportunities and on-stage platform work at some of the industry’s biggest events. With the opportunity to have bespoke sessions with the mentoring team, GenNOW is the perfect launch pad for any aspiring hairdresser. Mentor Jordanna Cobella believes this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. “GenNOW is the most incredible platform for any hairdresser who has 3-8 years’ experience, who are hungry to take their career to the next level. We’re going to have a great time getting creative and hopefully taking their skills to a whole new dimension. I am delighted to be one of the mentor’s and am excited to meet the new team and get started,” she said. Hopeful candidates can demonstrate their interest from 1st March 2022 via Instagram. They simply need to show examples of their work on Instagram (pictures or video in a carousel swipe post. NO stories please), adding some information about themself, their passions, and explain why they want to be on the GenNOW Team. They’ll need to use the hashtag #WellaGenNOW, tag @ wellahairUKI Successful entries will then go through to the audition stage at the Wella studios, where they will be judged by the mentors. The entry deadline is 31st March 2022.

RAISING PRICES WITHOUT LOSING TRADE! A Salon, Spa & Barbershop Owner’s Guide...

by Nergish Wadia-Austin.

Nergish Wadia-Austin is the CEO and founder of the PHAB Service Stars and a leading international business management trainer and on-line coach. She has for the last 22+ years been training salon owners and managers in how to upgrade their knowledge and skills in growing their business and making money! She believes that many salon owners struggle unnecessarily because they lack the skills and knowledge in business that makes it harder for them to run their salon’s, spa’s and barbershop’s profitably. Once they’re taught those skills in a simple, practical and easy to implement way, their revenues grow steadily, allowing them to then grow their business. Details of what she teaches are on her website below and she also tailor makes courses to suit the business’ or the manager’s needs via a free consultation www.hairandbeautyexpert.com I have been approached many, many times in the past 4 months about price increases. The question on everybody’s lips is ‘Should I increase my prices or shouldn’t I? My response never changes: there is no one correct answer BUT there are a set of rules that my experience helped me to design, which, when applied, makes a great

3 BASIC PRINCIPALS can guide you very simply when answering your question ‘Is it time to raise my prices?’

16

guide to use when you are considering a price hike. Once you’ve considered everything on this list you will arrive at the correct decision for your business. Hope it helps! The same rules apply when you decide to increase prices for time in a professional’s column. If you’ve answered YES to all of the above then go ahead and raise your prices without fear of losing loyal customers! If, however you have answered NO to any of the considerations above then only raise prices of your most sought after/ booked up services/treatments or the most busy and booked up professionals using the same consideration guide above. Now to answer the ‘but my cost of buying PPE and my reduced time slots due to disinfection times between customers has reduced my ability to earn’ is very valid point. And if you are continuing to maintain the higher standards of hygiene and routine then it is worth considering a (at cost) price increase (which you will have the data to work out how much more it has cost you per client to provide each service now as compared to pre- covid extra precautions). That is a justifiable increase because you are choosing to continue your new higher standards of cleanliness. As a business coach I recommend this because the statistic that 67% of all customers still remain worried about Covid spread, so aren’t returning as often to businesses providing close contact services as readily as they used to.

1. Ask yourself are my business’ foundations strong? If the answer is an emphatic YES! Please continue. 2. Is your business booked up 6 weeks in advance? If yes, please proceed to the next consideration. 3. Are you turning away business regularly or do you have a waiting list of customers, wanting an appointment?

As I write this article, Ireland has revived news that most Covid restrictions have been relaxed but please remember that close contact service providers still have to have visible higher hygiene standards going forward regardless of what governments declare. The danger of raising prices is they are readily accepted by the customer if they can see improvements be that in service, treatments, new products or in surroundings. Consumers only start to notice or complain about a price increase when NOTHING has changed for the better! That’s when they feel ‘ripped off’. It’s easy for us in personal care to improve our standards of performance & service delivery and it helps us to grow our businesses when we’ve re-trained staff in knowledge and skills so that a facial or a Balyage results in your business are much better. Now that can be as a result of better consultation language or better listening skills or new techniques learnt. Or when the Spa, Barbershop or salon is cleaner, newly painted or refitted.

Or the business has introduced a new gadget or has introduced new product ranges. Or if the reception check-in or check-out, booking or payment service have improved making the clients life easier. Then a price increase will pretty much go un-noticed because it would be justified and visible to the customer. I shall end with these (strong words of advice) if the business continues to provide the same service, returns back to the same old slack hygiene standards, with professionals giving the same tired service in a business space that remains it’s 2019 lack-lustre, unimaginative space and you still increase your prices because every one in the industry is screaming to raise your prices, I don’t recommend it for the loss of custom that will inevitably follow! I’d recommend improvements & training first and then the price increase to charge what your team’s time and skill is worth! I hope this has answered the burning question of the moment.

Nergish is also the CEO of the PHAB Service Stars which recognises and supports the best hairdressers, barbers and colourist in Ireland and the U.K. Check out how many of your professionals qualify at www.phabservicestars.com To speak to Nergish about your business training needs, email her at info@hairandbeautyexpert.com for a free consultation. ©Jopirza Consultants. PETER PFISTER President of Intercoiffure Mondial Peter F. Pfister was nominated as the new President of the Intercoiffure Mondial in late 2021 , the Paris-based world organisation. Born in Innsbruck, Peter has been a ICD member and involved in various events at Intercoiffure Mondial for over 35 years, most recently as Chairman of the Intercoiffure World Academy as a global training concept. We congratulate him and wish him every success.

INTERVIEW OF INTERCOIFFURE MONDIAL PRESIDENT, PETER F. PFISTER "Never standing still - that's leadership for me!"

Q: Mr. Pfister, what makes you proud to be part of the Intercoiffure community? PETER F. PFISTER: At the start of my membership, I was very proud that I met the high-quality standards our craft demands and was accepted as an Intercoiffeur. And over the years I experienced how great it is to cultivate worldwide friendships and to engage in an honest exchange with like-minded people. Q: You are courageous in seeking to reshape the Intercoiffure Mondial association in very challenging human and economic times. What drives you? PETER F. PFISTER: I am convinced that our profession is one of the most beautiful there is. But being a hairdresser is often talked down. I want to communicate the value of what we do to the outside world! Especially now in pandemic times - after and during the lockdowns - many people have noticed how much 26

they miss their hairdresser and how valuable a salon visit is for the overall well-being of each individual. That's why I believe it's exactly the right moment to present our services NOW and build trust. Q: In your new job, you combine a passion for hairdressing and an uncompromising commitment to quality of service. How do you measure quality? PETER F. PFISTER: I don't measure the quality of our work at all! The client does that for themselves, because it is such an individual thing. In a way, it's a question of recognising the needs of the clientele and meeting them in an optimal way. To do this, every hairdresser should also recognise the company's own client structures. We want to support this process of gaining knowledge - and an "entrecoiffeurship" seminar is already being prepared.

Q: So how can clients recognise the quality of an Intercoiffeur? PETER F. PFISTER: I hope it's obvious from the shop window with our logo and the Intercoiffure star. It is like a seal of quality, like toques in kitchens or hotels stars. In addition, there are already anonymous salon checks in many countries. The results of these visits will help Intercoiffure members to be guided by clients' wishes. Q: "The world's leading hairdressers" is the new slogan of Intercoiffure Mondial - how would you describe leadership? PETER F. PFISTER: For me, leadership means never standing still! It means motivating yourself continually to adapt to the times, being flexible to people's needs and constantly reimagining your offering. Q: Awareness of trends and visions for the development of the industry are also on your agenda. What exactly is on the agenda for 2022? PETER F. PFISTER: We have many highly creative colleagues. And the message is clear: people follow trends. Intercoiffeurs from all over the world have inspiring hair fashion expertise and it is also important to find the right balance for our main client groups. Because even though many hair trends are fun in terms of craftsmanship and creativity, we have to recognise those clients who cover our costs. There are avant-garde creations, but commercial looks are at least as important. We offer services that provide this. Our newly elected Vice President, Markus Herrmann, will say more about this. What’s important is to know that we have agreed on thematic task divisions with Vice Presidents Frank Gambuzza, Junji Yamano and Markus Herrmann. The topics of fashion, collections and trends are the responsibility of Markus Herrmann. Q: What does progress mean to you? PETER F. PFISTER: Always keep moving. Finding strength in serenity and engaging in an exchange of ideas. Q: How many members do you need to motivate? PETER F. PFISTER: We have around 2,000 registered members worldwide, but not all of them are active. For 2022, it is important to offer an exciting and attractive programme and, in particular, to strengthen communication so that all members are happy and proud to be Intercoiffure members and show this in their entrance doors or shop windows! Q: What benefits do hairdressers get from Intercoiffure Mondial membership? PETER F. PFISTER: Basically, it’s like a fitness club. A member must also be active in order to benefit from the perks. Anyone who pays the membership fee benefits through our international network and the partnerships with our industry partners. Our goal is also to collect and pass on our know-how. With our Intercoiffure World Academy we offer a neutral and technically extremely demanding and versatile further education programme. Our Chairman of Education, Joakim Roos from

Sweden, and his team of trainers have come up with a lot of ideas. There will be lots of seminars at a manageable cost price, both digital and face-to-face. In addition, we will also offer very high-quality seminars in the business area - we were able to recruit a trainer for this who usually teaches at a university. As a lecturer, he will support a module system that deals with individual business topics such as employee recruitment and retention. Intercoiffure had not previously availed itself of such opportunities. Q: Any other offers for this year? PETER F. PFISTER: Our programme is very ambitious and versatile. “Soft social media” will be a module seminar. A new Mondial collection is coming, and the seminar programme will be adapted to reflect it. We also want to focus on the world of men’s hair, barbers and male salons within Intercoiffure. We will continue to promote and develop young talent through the Fondation Guillaume. And our charity program “Education for Life” shall also attract growing attention. Not everything will be possible in the first year. Events are dependent on how the pandemic evolves. We very much hope that it will be possible to hold a meeting for our members in Paris in September. Q: Why is a cooperation with Intercoiffure Mondial so valuable for the professional hair cosmetics industry? PETER F. PFISTER: Our partners are strong in and of themselves. However, like us, they run the risk of a certain operational blindness. The exchange and transfer of ideas and knowledge takes place to a significant extent in each partner’s own community. Intercoiffure Mondial offers a “neutral” network of leading professionals and can thus ensure much more exchange. This also opens up opportunities for all participants to get to know each other. Q: As Global President of Intercoiffure Mondial you are at the head of a guild. What do you want to advocate for as a strong opinion influencer within the industry? PETER F. PFISTER: For the recognition of our valuable profession in society through fair remuneration, honest pricing and a lower tax rate for service professions where the personnel cost share is relatively high. Q: As a young hairdresser, you worked with the icon Alexandre de Paris for fashion shows. Will there be another collaboration with fashion designers in the future? PETER F. PFISTER: I would like to make this possible again and am already making contacts. But rebuilding a system that has “lost” this proximity to the fashion designers in the past requires patience. And unfortunately, that’s not really my strength ;-) But giving up is not my style! Q: For you, beauty is...? PETER F. PFISTER: Friendly charisma. A smile. Open eyes. And of course, beautiful hair in every shape and length! Interview: Petra Weinzierl p.weinzierl@intercoiffure.org 27

INTERCOIFFURE MONDIAL PRESENTS “THE WORLD’S LEADING HAIRDRESSERS”. Natural hair and beauty for salon clients all over the world. Simply being beautiful! Versatile simplicity meets unbridled individuality. Soft curly waves in blonde. A sleek straight bob in caramel. Or shoulder-length, demure curls. Beauty in diversity and authenticity. Honesty and self-confidence make you attractive - you don’t need Instagram filters for that. The new promotional campaign of Intercoiffure Mondial under the aegis of its Global President Peter F. Pfister strives to deliver timeless hair fashion statements. “Our new beauty visual is not about a fast-moving trend prediction. Intercoiffure Mondial is aimed at all salon customers - end consumers in particular should feel that our hair fashion creations appeal to them. We want our styles to emphasise the personality and lifestyle of the wearer. Of course, we can style grandiose avant-garde catwalk looks, but our international hairdressers primarily focus on masterful quality in the salon,” says Pfister. “Our Intercoiffure Mondial members know how to handle all different qualities of hair, because we are at home on all continents.” The new images - which feature hairstyles of different hair colours and lengths - are intended to reflect the openness of Intercoiffure and affirm the slogan ‘The world’s leading hairdressers’. “Because we are successful

hairdressers from all over the world,” Pfister emphasises, “and we do hair for people in and from all continents!” The three versions of the beauty visual include a casual summer look, business and sophisticated leisure styles as well as festive hair creations. As Peter F. Pfister says: “Intercoiffure is a reliable partner when it comes to looking good! The cultural diversity within Intercoiffure Mondial is so enriching because we are able to enjoy an incredible creative exchange. It is important that as hairdressers we know our clients, recognise their different personalities and accept them as unique individuals.” Peter F. Pfister has been the Globe President of Intercoiffure Mondial for four months. The Austrian has been a member of the global elite association for hairdressers for over 35 years. In his first few weeks, the entrepreneur has built up a new team and in addition to showcasing the latest beauty visuals alongside the slogan “The world’s leading hairdressers”, he is buzzing with ideas. “Our new slogan is designed to emphasise our high standards,” says Pfister. “Our profession combines craftsmanship with creativity and an enthusiasm for beauty. It is our duty to offer our customers an outstanding service.”

And the logo, the Intercoiffure star, has also been tweaked slightly in terms of graphics. It expresses the philosophy of Intercoiffure Mondial and its high standards. As President Peter F. Pfister puts it: "Similar to the gastronomic and hotel industry, this star is meant to be a symbol for the top level of our members. The five points represent the creativity in our minds, the craftsmanship of our hands and the agility of our legs, spreading our mission across the globe."

WELLA BUSINESS NETWORK … an incredible live event

Business Network Live has a reputation as being one of the greatest motivational events in the hairdressing calendar, so when the in-person conference finally took place after a reluctant two-year hiatus, there was an atmosphere like no other. It was great to be back, and the event did not disappoint. More than 200 guests gathered in the stunning grounds of The Belfry Hotel and Resort for the two-day inspirational event. In its 24 th year, Business Network Live has become a firm favourite with the Wella family. Delivering the perfect balance of inspirational content from motivational speakers, teamed with networking with likeminded managers and business owners, the event was an outstanding success from the start. Industry influencer and podcast host, Dom Lehane, hosted the two-day conference, and was joined by Max Amen, Wella’s General Manager, who officially opened the event. “” Guest speakers had been selected for their unique motivational stories, and the line-up was captivating, exciting, and included a truly dynamic combination of real-life stories that could be adapted into business advice. Highlights included a session from multi-awardwinning speaker, Geoff Ramm, who took the audience on a journey, sharing the greatest marketing ideas he’s ever seen. Writer and performance expert, Rasmus Ankersen, gave a fascinating insight into the synergies between high achieving sporting groups around the world, giving examples of managing and recognising sporting talent, to business talent. “Always try to think like the challenger in your business,” he said. Ex-footballer, Clarke Carlisle, and his wife Carrie gave an honest, moving, and emotional account of the struggles of dealing with mental health. They shared their personal turbulent journey and offered practical advice: “We are all one step away from someone who is experiencing adverse mental health. Ask yourself do I have my coping mechanisms or am I looking for it?” Adding a fresh approach to taking a chance on new team members, adventurer, author and TV presenter, Simon Reeve shared his epic journey of becoming a TV adventure travel legend: “I sincerely believe that we don’t get anywhere in life without facing our nerves or fears. Take small steps with which you can cope. Planet earth is a wonderful place and meeting other human beings out there is the greatest thing of all.” 40

Today we celebrate the Wella family. We are a standalone company now and are more flexible than ever before. The salon is always at the core of what we do, and you can expect us to be there for you through good times and bad.

40

Other guest speakers included industry experts Adam Thomas from Salonspy who shared his insights into reviews, client retention and client attraction. Fry Taylor from the Green Salon Collective was also there to talk about making sustainable decisions in the salon. Hairdressers Jordanna Cobella, Collette Osbourne, Salv Mule and Patrick Gildea lead the panel discussion covering topics such as motivating staff, service menus and client expectations. Saira Khan from The Apprentice, delivered a set on team motivation and the power of self- belief, launching her session with the wise words: “The actions you take today will determine your future.” Comedy writer Tim Reid, gave a refreshing session on creative brainstorming and the power of humour in creativity: “It’s never been more important to think differently.’’ TV Adventurer and founder of a travel company specifically for blind people, Amar Latif, shared

his life story and the challenges of turning blind at the age of 18. His empowering, emotional, and honest story was filled with uplifting moments where Amar had faced adversity. “If there is anything I’ve learned in my life, it is how to make the best of a situation. Resilience is not about being tough and unmovable, it’s about knowing where you want to go. If you dare push yourself to the limit, your world becomes bigger.” However, it wasn’t all work and no play. In true Wella style, delegates enjoyed a fabulous ‘Winter Luxe’ inspired evening. Drinks, dinner, ice sculptures, ski stimulators, and a 360- degree photo booth set the scene. If that was not enough, full-on entertainment was provided from a hilarious drag act The Globe Girls, and a genius stand-up set by comedian Tom Allen. This was one Business Network Live event to remember. It was just what the Wella family needed to kick start 2022 and delivered enough inspiration to keep delegates motivated and to keep growing their businesses throughout the year.

Working in partnership to listen, believe and support women experiencing domestic abuse Recognise

What is Domestic Abuse? Domestic abuse is a pattern of abusive behaviour by someone who is, has been, or wishes to be in an intimate relationship with another person, in order to control that person. Abusers can use a wide range of different abusive behaviours. This may include emotional or psychological abuse, coercion, destruction of property, isolation from friends & family, threats to others including children, stalking, cyber harassment, control over access to personal items, money, food, transport or telecommunications, sexual or physical violence or threats of violence. Domestic abuse isn’t always physical and in most cases it will include a number of types of abuse which can escalate over a period of time. It can happen to any woman, at any age and from any class or ethnicity. The majority of victims are women but some men may be affected. Domestic abuse can also happen in LGBTI+ relationships. For more, read the 10 Common Signs of Domestic Abuse poster displayed in your salon.

Respond

With the right information you can make a difference in someone’s journey to safety.

44

Consider these six tips to help you know how to respond: 1. Remember that you don’t have to have the answers! In fact, just creating a safe space to ask someone what is going on and letting them share, without directing them or telling them what to do, is a powerful act of solidarity and support. 2. Use open questions like ‘you don’t seem yourself, how are you?’. 3. Allow the person to speak, without evaluating their choices, and create a safe space for them to confide in you, if they want to. Don’t ask too much if you are in a public place, as this can be exposing for a person. 4. Believe them and listen without judgement. Try to stay neutral and not make dramatic statements. Express empathy (e.g. ‘that sounds very difficult for you’ or ‘that seems to be really upsetting you’ you’.) 5. Don’t blame them, or pressure them to leave. There are many reasons a person may not choose to change their situation right now – from fear to hope or even love. The only person who can decide what’s right is them. 6. Remind them that abuse is not their fault. Abusers often make victims /survivors feel isolated, frightened, ashamed and even responsible for what is being done to them. Remind them that they are not responsible and everyone deserves respect in their relationships.

THE INTERVIEW From Fermoy to Melbourne

Eoin McCarthy

CEO & Founder of AREA Agency Dyson Ambassador Andis Educator 52

Q: Where did your hair journey start? I am from Fermoy in Co.Cork. My mother has had a salon there for over 30 years & that’s where my hair journey started. Q: What is life like cutting hair in Australia? Life cutting hair in Australia has been nothing less than phenomenal. Reflecting on it now, it has given me exposure to so many opportunities which I never thought were possible. I have met some incredible people since being here & every day is an adventure. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who may be thinking about it. Q: What is your current position? I am the founder & co-owner of AREA Agency which we set up as a hair education company for both in person education & online through AREA Academy & ‘The Network’. We are an up-skilling facility for haircutting that prides itself on tailor-made educational experiences based on personal development. I am based in Melbourne, Australia. It is an incredible city & I live bayside, so about 40 minutes from the city right by the beach. It’s a holiday-like destination & somewhere I could only have dreamed of living in the past. All the suburbs in Melbourne are so unique, it’s a special place. The collection “Unity In Diversity” which won me the BEST of the BEST International Men’s Collection was inspired by Melbourne’s unique & welcoming diversity. My future goal is to positively impact over 1 million people’s lives. Our purpose at AREA is to build & inspire lives through hair. Q: Is there a difference in hairstyles and cultural tastes there Yes & that was a jump into the deep end when first arriving. Melbourne is one of the most culturally diverse city’s in the world so on a daily basis we encounter multiple different hair types & styles. Melbourne is also known for it’s underground fashion/hipster scene which means trends don’t stick as much as they do back in Ireland. Everyone wants to be different so that gives us diversity when it comes to our work. Q: Who is your hair hero? My hair hero is my mother & my future self. My mother, due to the fact she introduced me to the industry & knowing now how difficult it can be to sustain a career & business for the length of time she has, that’s pretty heroic! For my future self, I think “striving” is really important for us as humans. I am always striving to be a better version of myself & to think of my future self as my hero keeps me positively moving forward whilst not forgetting to enjoy the journey. Q: Who do you admire outside the hair industry? I admire a lot of people & for a lot of different reasons. Recently I’ve been drawing a lot of my inspiration from figures such as people running businesses & people in the personal development space. Steven Bartlett is someone who I admire a lot. I highly recommend his podcast “The Diary Of A CEO”.

Q: Tell us about the awards you have you won? Competition work & awards have been prevalent in my career since I begun, strangely. I say strangely because I used to be a professional cyclist who raced for Ireland & one of the reasons that didn’t work out was my lack of competitiveness towards others. To mention a few - in 2016 I won Irish Barbering Apprentice Of The Year (1 year into my hair career), in 2017 I won Victorian Barber Of The Year, in 2020 I won the International Men’s Collection at the BEST OF THE BEST Awards & most recently I was awarded with the Special Recognition Award at the Australian Modern Barber Awards for my outstanding contribution to the Australian Barber Industry. Q: What type of education do you offer at AREA? Our education covers all things men’s & shorter androgynous hair as well as personal development & business. It’s quite expansive but basically we want to reach as many hairdressers & barbers as possible. My business partner Leigh comes from a hairdressing background & I put a strong emphasis on building my hairdressing skills to add to my barbering skills. SO generally we have hairdressers looking to learn barbering & barbers looking to learn hairdressing. Q: What does being an ambassador for a company mean to you? Responsibility. I think every single person now has a platform for influence but being an ambassador for brands amplifies that. I firmly believe it’s an ambassadors responsibility to demonstrate leadership in the most influential & positive way possible. For me it’s not about the flex or being cool, maybe one time it was… Now it’s more about being authentic & speaking for the masses on issues which need to be spoken about. Even if that means being cancelled, which could happen in todays world. Find out everything about Eoin including where to find his online education via the link/QR Code
