The near future turned out to be June 24th 1945 when a meeting held at the White Hart, Sevenoaks decided to re-start the club on a temporary basis. Later in the year the club really got going once again with Reg Wingett Secretary, E Huntley Chairman and Major Branson as President, in fact no changes. In 1946 things happened pretty rapidly. Racing resumed at Brands Hatch and crowds of up to 15,000 attended. In 1947 Bill Boddice rode at Brands on
the grass under the "Owls" banner. He was a member for one year only alas. But trouble was brewing at Brands Hatch. The new management could not come to any agreement with the Combine and this was destined to be the last season at Brands run by the OWLS. With grateful thanks to Jim Sharp for providing this information. Printed by kind permission of the OWLS Motor Club Ltd.
What Came First? That Chicken and Egg Thing
By Mike Wiseman
For as long as I can remember Waltham Chase MCC have managed the "can't get Observers" problem, and I am sure many other Clubs have the same issues. We beg, we plead, we pay, we double up and still end up with self marking at some Club Trials. As a result of Covid-19 things will have to change. So, what comes firstthe Trial or the Observers? We keep on being asked "when are you going to run a proper trial". We are good to go as a club with a Trial and have the venues
Camping Carry On
By Mike Wiseman
One of the highlights of the Waltham Chase MCC calendar is the three day Camping Weekend in July, where friends and family join the riders for three days of riding and a social get together at Cadnam near Southampton, on the edge of the New Forest Country Park. For the reasons we are all so aware of, this year's event has had to be postponed, but fingers crossed, and if legislation changes, we may squeeze a camping weekend in later in the year. However, having the venue booked, and a willing landowner, the Club has decided to hold three separate practice days at the venue to keep the woodland in use and "trials ready". It is all too easy to lose the use of land and not so easy to find new venues. The three days of practice will be
ready, but as punch card are no longer an option we will always need 10 or 15 Observers signed up in advance to mark the riders on score sheets, before we request the permit. So, Observers must come first! This may seem a tad radical and so quite different from what everyone is used to – but then everything has changed. So, as we plan our first Trial after the lockdown, we will be asking members to volunteer in advance to "Observe" Update in the next edition of TSM.
on the Friday 10th July, Saturday 11th July, and Sunday the 12th July. The Friday session will be for youth riders only, with plenty of land available, including open fields for our younger members to regain their confidence without the "grownups" getting in the way. On the Saturday and Sunday, the sessions will be open to youth and adult riders. These practice sessions are marked out "just like a trial", but with no scoring, and are open to members of the Waltham Chase Club. Full details of the sessions are sent to members along with the Supplementary regs for the event and are also posted on the Waltham Chase MCC Website. Waltham Chase membership is available at the reduced fee of £10.00 for the rest of 2020 for anyone wanting to join us.
