Good Spring weather brought with it a promising start to the racing season. Revitalising motocross Waterlooville MCC ran the first of four rounds of the MSU Championship within the Southern Centre.

Championship classes will be Solo, MXY Youth, with meetings having additional classes which vary between Evo solo, Twinshock sidecars & Quads. Two more rounds take place this month on 8th May at Owslebury, then on 22nd May at West Meon. The final round is on 14th August at Cusses Gorse.

In the South East the Sidcup club launched round one of SEMX last month and have a busy schedule ahead of them over the next five weeks.

This includes a club trial on the 15th May followed by the 4th round of the Revo British Motocross Championship on the 22nd then just two weeks later on 5th June the open Hare and Hounds which is part of the SEEC series. In all the club have nine events taking place over the next three months.

Grass track racing also made a successful start in the south with the Bantasia event attracting a great deal of interest. Moving to the South East, the popular Battle of Britain event run by the Frittenden club later this month promises a great deal for race fans as always, attracting the best in all classes from all over the country. The club also have two further events planned in July and September.

NMCC have already run two events in March and April of the eight meetings planned for this year. The next event at the Long Buckby track will be on May 22nd which has invited riders from the NGR series. In June there will be a further visit to the same track on the 19th which will be a round of the SM Championship with invited riders from the South Eastern EVO.

ACU Southern Centre Board Meeting Date Change

As a result of Local Elections taking place on Thursday 5th May the next Centre Board will now be held on Tuesday 3rd May, commencing at 8.00pm, at the Southampton and District MCC HQ, The Cranbury Centre, Cranbury Road, Eastleigh, SO50 5HT. Representatives from all Centre Clubs are very welcome to attend.

Hilton Woodrow (1929 - 2022)

Clerk of the Course at the Bonfire Burn Up in 1989 Q By Andy Wood Enthusiasts of grass track racing over a wide area will certainly know the name, his involvement with the sport goes back over a period of 70 years.

An older generation will certainly remember him as a very competitive sidecar driver racing against established stars of the day to record his first Centre Speed Shield win in 1953. He went on to repeat the feat in 1954 and 1955. His racing continued for a number of years after that, his racing number 300 a familiar sight. In later years he was to turn his hand briefly to another form of motorcycle sport namely sprinting.

Family and business took more of his time setting up and running a successful

business providing tools and supplies for engine rebuilders.

In fact he was still working until a short time ago. He did however maintain his links with the sport joining the newly formed Grass Track Sidedcar Association in 1952 as well as being a member of the OWLS Motor Club. As a GTSA member he was Secretary in 1957 and was also a President right up until 2019. His name began to appear among the officials for events as Clerk of the Course, where he gained a reputation for being firm but fair. When events began to take place at Collier Street he was an obvious choice of the person to take charge of the meetings.

His interest and knowledge and experience of grass track racing saw him involved with the management of the South Eastern Centre. He joined the Centre Competitions Committee firstly in 1967 serving until 1969 then again in 1972. As an elected position he returned in 1977 also in 1986 and 1988 when it was

known as The Management Committee and finally in 1997. He was also Centre Vice Chairman in 1974 - 1975 then again in 1978 with two further spells in 1991 - 1993 and finally in 1999.

Interspersed with these roles he was elected Chairman in 1985, 1994 and 1998. He did not suffer fools gladly and his no nonsense style of dealing with motorcycling matters was much respected.

Changes within the Centre were taking place and with the handing over the running of the sport to the various sporting combines, Hilt was the obvious choice for grass track. We were all lucky to benefit from his experience and knowledge.

The Grass Track and Speedway Committee were also to benefit from his skills gained at Centre level firstly from 1976 - 1978, 1980 - 1982 1986 - 1994. He was also a member of the Technical Committee in 1978, 1982 1984 and 1988 - 1994.

'To boldly go where no one…' Jake Mulford goes round the outside of Zach Wajtknecht!

A Hampshire Happening (Bantasia 2 - 10th April) Q By Alan Turner Last year, the inaugural running of Bantasia, when the Grasstrack Banter Facebook group became race organisers, was in the midst of Covid restrictions. Spectators were not permitted. This year, things were almost normal, but the scourge was still in evidence with Covid cited for the absence of a number of riders.

The track used to be the province of the long-defunct SCGTRA at Owslebury, near Bishops Waltham in Hampshire. A 40-race programme included events for 250 solos; 500 Open Solos, Elite 500 Solos and right hand sidecars in two categories: Old and New and 1,000cc.

The programme had an impressive roster of names.

The heats threw up some surprises and the inevitable warning that this was now 2022 and so a whole new season. Race one was 6

for the big chairs and saw Trevor and Sam Heath put one over on Mark Cossar/Gareth Williams.

The number 37 crew had problems, for sure, but try as they might, they could not get past.

Two races later, it was the recent pairing of long-time passenger, now driver, Terry Saunters with Liam Brown, going even quicker to hold at bay Neil Owen and Jason Farwell, always a sight to behold on the Godden V-twin.

The solos were not to be out-done. First up,

Chad Wirtzfeld dominated his heat leaving luminaries such as Paul Cooper, Tony Atkin and Dan Winterton in his wake. Next race saw old adversaries and British Masters Zach Wajtknecht and James Shanes in fast and furious combat, with the latter in charge by half distance. The Open 500 class went to Jason Prynne, with his unusual upright GM and leg-trailing style keeping him clear of Ryan Ashcroft and Graeme Brown. The other heat winner in this leg was Wayne Broadhurst, although experienced Tim Curnock impressively worked his way through the field to runner up. In a later Elite heat, Jake Mulford inflicted another surprise when he went round the outside of Zach Wajtknecht to take the lead, although he could not maintain the pace and eventually faded to third.

The impressive times of the 250 races were starting to embarrass the 500s as, on occasion, they were quicker! Cameron Taylor notched three heat wins, Chris Still two and Luke Harris one. Impressive here was young Dutchman Ace Pijper, his father Theo has raced British speedway for some years. It was also good to see Sam Norris back on track. A young talent whose promising career almost finished after a very serious speedway accident.

The meeting had been conducted at a brisk pace until Race 25, a third leg heat for the Elite solos. This started another fast and furious chase until Dan Winterton and Theo Pijper tangled on the back straight. Dan ended up in the local hospital somewhat knocked about. Unfortunately, in view of his injuries, the medical team needed assistance from the county medical services. It meant a long delay before racing could resume and complete the last six qualifying heats.

The first of the finals was the C Final for the 1000cc sidecars, but attrition meant only the outfits of Anthony Sales/Michael Tottman and Dale/Jordan Fish came to the tapes. The Fish outfit broke immediately, stranding the outfit on the racing line as Sales/Tottman came round to complete their first lap at race speed. Frantic marshalling prevented a potential coming together. Having been awarded that race, Team Sales was invited to fill a vacant gate position in the B Final, but this time the outfit rolled soon after the start, the crew trapped

beneath their machine. Rider and passenger got away with a shaking. The eventual rerun race was a cracker, with Will Penfold/ Bradley Reynolds being harried right to the line by Robbie Simmonds/Bradley Atkinson.

Kenzie Cossey had been in the lower points places through the heats, but it all came good for a controlled ride to take the 250 Solo B Final as he kept plenty of space between himself and Austin Riches. The A Final was an opportunity for Cameron Taylor to make it four wins out of four rides, followed home, yet again, by Luke Harris, with Tim Greig annexing third.

The 500 Open B Final was a victory for Dean Cutler with Luke Tuck in second. Just four riders made the Elite B Final, but that was an Alfie Bowtell benefit with Arran Butcher unable The day's first sensation as Trevor/Sam Heath hold off Mark Cossar/Gareth Williams

to make any further impression. They were followed home by German rider Finn Loheider and Denmark's Morten Qvistgaard, from a few continental riders who came to add even more flavour to the Bantasia cocktail. The A Final was another thriller. Wayne Broadhurst led the pack, but Jason Prynne was in determined mood, he tried inside, outside but seemingly settled for second-best until Wayne Broadhurst came to earth exiting the last bend! A grateful Jason Prynne secured the coveted place, as Broadhurst pushed over the line to become tenth finisher.

The Old & New sidecars were run over four points-scoring heats and Mark Courtney/ Leon Torres notched four victories. On their first time out Brian Hatch/Lew Wharton managed a second, but sadly they took no further part in the meeting. On three occasions Continued overleaf 7

The prospect of the last two A Finals was one to relish, although it was getting late in the afternoon. At last the tapes went up and the Elite Solo octet were down the straight and into the first bend, throwing a big cloud of dust and among it two bikes separated from their riders.

While Zach Wajtknecht picked himself up, a badly knocked-about James Shanes required the medical team. It was an unpleasant episode for a day which had delivered so much great racing.

After another inevitably long delay, without medical cover the meeting could not be concluded, out on track at least. The finalists decided they would accept a qualifying points based result, so it was solos Zach Watjknecht, Chad Wirtzfeld and Paul Cooper and sidecars Mark Cossar/Gareth Williams, Terry Saunters/ Liam Brown and Neal Owen/Jason Farwell 'Getting to the top is hard, staying there is harder still'. A quotation that sprang to mind when recalling the day's action. From the racing, it was apparent that there are a number of riders that could well be on the cusp of challenging the established order.

The 250 Class still offers a mix of two- and four-stroke machines, but the four-strokes made the strongest showing at Owslebury.

Dividing the 500 solos into two classes certainly ramped up the pressure. There were 20 entries (and three reserves) in the Open competition, the remaining 16 were the Elite, although there had been some adjustment to allow for the non-starters.

Hopefully, the Old & New Sidecar class will

also grow. The one-litre form of three-wheel racing is an expensive pastime with the cost of those tuned tyre-shredding engines, the custom-built chassis and usually something larger than a Ford Focus in which to transport the ensemble. The continental-style 500 chairs may be simpler, but their high-revving solo-type engines need regular attention, which does not come cheap. The Old & New offers the whole

Just allowed in the Adult classes, Ace Pijper secured fifth in the 250 Final package in far cheaper form and is also an attempt to persuade owners to retrieve long obsolete outfits from wherever they have been buried and give everyone a dose of nostalgia.

Latest news on the injured list was that concussed James Shanes was back home the following day, but Dan Winterton will take a while longer to mend broken ribs and wrist. Theo Pijper broke a collar-bone.

Our best wishes to them and hopefully, they will soon be back in action.

North Kent Trials Combine

The event this month is the OWLS Reg Wingett Trial, regulations are in this issue as a reminder. If you have yet to enter closing date for entries is May 7th. The course is at the popular Bowens Farm at Penshurst where there will be 13 sections to cover three times.

Regulations are also in this issue for the June event, in the capable hands of the Erith club.

Brighton Club’s demise

memories of the event are vague but I suspect I retired again, so even after 25 years a How sad to hear from Roger Brown regarding the demise pattern is emerging!

Yes, sad that the club is not of the Brighton Club, 90 now functioning but let's be years of history and a huge number of events that many positive of what we have all got from this mad sport, I rode of us have ridden in. for many years with the guy After reading the news last who took me to the first event month I realised that the first in his ex-GPO van and also motor sport event I did was a rode his Greeves (we were both Brighton Trial on the Downs GPO apprentice mechanics), in 1968, was this a Novice he is still a friend and we talk only event I cannot recall. I regularly. rode on a recently purchased I joined the Sidcup Club Francis Barnett "Trials" machine in 1967 and have remained powered by a Villiers 8E a member ever since, I have engine, I have often used the numerous friends from those expression "I have made many days and others collected on awful purchases in my life the way. but this was the worst" when Life has changed beyond discussing my 1951 Coates all recognition in the 90 years Trials Car, suffice to say the of the Brighton Club, in 1930 Francis Barnett came a close I imagine only the better off second. Add to all this the current political climate regarding the environment, I cannot imagine the current administration in Brighton (Greens) would support any motor sport or motoring event, certainly not on the Downs! Compare this to photographs of the start/ finish of trials through the 40's to quite recently when local authorities were supportive of events, realising the positive influence they had on local finances and had the Mayor or other dignitaries to start the event.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel, I recently competed in a mixed car and bike trial in the South West, the youngest competitor was 10 (bike) and the oldest was 92 (car), oh and I did not retire!

A cold clear night made for much overnight Dew and a slippy start to the day on most sections; but once the Sun appeared it shone once again on the righteous for Oxford's Good Friday Trial at The Common and Roberts Copse on the land of Folly Farm Beckley. This was the venue for Ixion's 3rd club championship round, where a good entry of 50 plus riders

and officials set off to tackle Ten sections four times with a mix of mud roots climbs ditches and cambers that would eventually sort a winner in each class.

Heading the Expert class home was Chris Wickham 250 Beta with 13 marks lost. The last section of the day was a tough nut to crack on the hard route with Chris recording two cleans early on. But with water being dragged up the section made it difficult to get grip on the steep climb out, as the the middle route riders also joined in the action at this point.

losing 9 marks. A three at sub nine lap two, a slick rooted camber crossing the ditch then a tightish pivot turn over a rooty outcrop before a third gear leap to a deteriorating grassy bank to the ends cards 10 yards or so up a slippy gradient.

It was always going to be a close call in the Clubman Class riding the middle route with several riders in contention.

On this occasion Alan Taylor took maximum championship points after a tie-break decision on most cleans. Recent storms had paved the way for a new section to be used. A fallen Oak had left a suitably sized crater for the course plotters to take advantage of before a sharp drop to a marshy turn with a steep climb out. Alan was 12

inch perfect every visit at this section.

Best Novice saw Gasser mounted Andrew Dobson 24 marks lost take the win over Rowan Hill 27 marks albeit the latter was piloting a bog standard 200 Fantic around for a day's sport. It made no difference which bike you were on for Section six it was simply a matter of correct gear selection and hang on for fifty yards of liquid dust judging the right line also came into the calculations. The little Fantic could be heard far in the woods having its neck rung in third to the delight of the gathered crowd.

the more experienced riders spied a Ch*** -Line although it was tricky to get it right.

Youth A competitor Isobel Coopey was having a good day on the Scorpa with a creditable 37 mark deficit with an equally good performance from Aaron Watson on the little 80cc Beta taking best Youth C. Both riders had section two weighed up a treat a shaded entrance along an offset camber then a fairish fallen tree to cross before a turn over an awkward swamp root.

On the White eased course the best performance was produced by Alfie Oven of Youth B status who put in a really controlled ride on the Gasser for his first appearance at our club. A measly 1 mark was all we could get him to part with and this solitary dab came at section four third lap. A third gear blast over a raft of floating timber before anchoring up to turn left though a gully of roots; then 30 yards later the ends were in sight where mysteriously water had started to flow down over a lattice of roots which

made the going extremely difficult for most. Alfie took the offending steadying prod here to maintain momentum to the end cards.

Mark Davidson 200 Fantic lost 4 marks to take the Twinshock max points with a dab in the very same spot every lap at section four getting lined up for the big climb.

DOT mounted Nick James was certainly Devoid Of Trouble today with another emphatic win in the Britbike class, 3 single dabs was a class act with section one and nine the offending hazards.

The Harold Avery Cup Trial

A clear but cold sunny morning greeted a classy entry of 50 plus riders for the 73rd running of the prestigious Open to Centre event the "Harold Avery Cup" where in the past such great riders as John Avery Sammy Miller Don Smith Brian Devereux Bill Faulkner Pat Lamper and John Reynolds have all been triumphant.

The event was staged at Howe Wood Oxon where ten sections were plotted on the chalky Flinted hills of the Chiltern range. Three cups were up for grabs today the Harold Avery best Expert the Spring Cup for best Novice and the Phillip Howkins memorial cup for the best adult performance on the middle route. The premiere went to Gasser mounted Thomas McCabe with a loss of 10 marks.

Section six took a couple of Tom's tally a very steep slick drop into narrow gully then a recently fallen oak to jump before a couple of short sharp cambered climbs.

Up from Eastbourne for a day's riding were father and son Mike and Jack Stiles also Gasser mounted and the trip was certainly made worthwhile Jack runner-up in the Expert Continued overleaf 13

and Michael taking best Inter also riding the Hard route. Jack was first up at section one a not so easy starter, first a large Pine that had succumbed to the recent storms then a fierce climb over a lattice of roots before a loose drop to the ends Jack cleaned every visit and set the precedent for the day.

Darren Haines over from the Thames club was going well on the TRS with a loss of 7 and was rewarded with best on the 50/50 route.

For the well supported middle yellow route the Spring Cup for best Novice will have the name of John Daniels engraved for this year with a well deserved victory parting with 7 marks John was almost inch perfect at section seven a long up-hill camber then a tricky slick flinty drop.

Stefan Walters was inch perfect with a yellow route clean ride on the Fantic to take the Phillip Howkins Memorial.

William Sparks 80 Beta had a great ride for the power available and best Youth B was his reward.

Twenty odd Clubman were vying for top spot with Adrian Steele Beta just edging out Mark George Yamaha with a tie-break decision after they finished on 2 apiece. The aging Yam found plenty of grip on the long pine wood climb of Firestarter Chris Hurworth.

The really popular White easy route is always a difficult one to plot although Neil Osman Gas Gas had no problems losing a miserly three all at section 2 lap two a deep leafy gully where Flint boulders were lurking for the unwary.

Cerys Walters Beta was having a good day picking up best Youth on 15 marks lost. Cerys had great final lap of one mark with the offending dab being laid down at section 3 a 10 foot blind drop off a grassy bank with an equally steep exit.

Mark Davidson 200 Fantic took best Twinshock showing these emerging classic Twinshock machines can still do the business. Nicholas ' Dotty ' James was once again triumphant in the Brit-Bike class steering the superb DOT around a challenging course for a 17 mark tally.

Saturday May 14th is Round 2 of the ADULT & Youth Petrol Berkhamsted Club Championship AND Round 1 of the SM OSET Cup Championship for electric bikes, at Nash Mills Saturday 14th May 12:00 start.

The Berko Committee are working hard this year on the Adult Club Championship to ensure all of our members get a Club Championship worth competing in!!!

So much so we have had our own enamel club winner's awards struck!!!!

No need to be a Toni Bou to enter we want to see some of our non-regular competition riders getting an ACU day licence & having a go. There will be plenty of riders willing to help you on your first trial.

In 2022 we will again be running the prestigious SM OSET CUP Championship (a 3 round Series), the real SM Youth Championship!!

Kent Royals Speedway

The first National League meeting for the newly formed Kent Royals took place on Tuesday March 29 at the home of the Plymouth Centurions.

The Royals took the fight to the Centurions and came away with their first victory following their trip to the West Country. With three of the Royals scoring double figures, Alfie Bowtell, Ben Morley 11 and Joe Alcock 10, new promotor Si Kellow will be hoping the start to the new era that he wished for keeps gaining momentum.

Team Manager John Sampford was delighted with the Team's performance and the founder of Kent Speedway Len Silver was also there to witness history being made. The Centurions top scorer on the night was ex Kent Kings and Royals rider Dan Gilkes who also notched up 11 points. Final Score: Plymouth Centurions 38 – Kent Royals 52.

The first home meeting for the new Kent Royals era was held at their new Iwade home on Easter Sunday, a challenge match versus a Thurrock Hammers side. Points were evenly matched until heat 8 when the Hammers Select side took a small lead. However, the Royals fought straight back taking a 5-1 heat advantage in heat 9 and were not outscored until heat 14 when the Arena side took a 2-4 advantage to set up a last heat nail-biter for the 22

500 plus spectators. With the scores at 44-40 going into the final heat, a 1-5 loss for the home side would have resulted in a probably deserved draw. The Royals however were in no mood to start their Iwade campaign with a draw, and the pairing of Ben Morley and Alfie Bowtell hammered the visiting pairing of Nathan Ablett and Ben Trigger with a 5-1 to seal the match win and retain the Tunnel Trophy.

get to grips with the way the track had been prepared. The Tigers faired much better on a surface they were clearly prepared for and the Royals never looked like taking charge of the opening leg. This gives the Royals a fair bit of work to do to make up the lost ground and overturn the 12 point deficit if they want to progress to the next round when the sides meet in the return leg at Iwade on Sunday May 1.

track locally. I've stuck to the amateur side of racing for the moment, doing things in my own time to see where it takes me. Track racing is fun, and I just want to enjoy each and every lap The NORA British Ladies Speedway – just like last year when I came third in the Lydd Championship to be staged at the Speedway 25th Anniversary Championships.

Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde in July and That was an amazing climax to an awesome August will benefit from a continental season and Lydd is now definitely my favourite influence with news that Roksana Brzeska is track as it has a great atmosphere and is run by aiming to join the riding order.

Roksana (fondly nicknamed Roks) was born in many enthusiastic people. From a riding angle, you really need to have the right technique Poland and moved to the UK aged six with her family. Now 20, she hails from the Sittingbourne which is all part of the learning process for me.

Last year also included my first trip to race area of Kent although currently studying at on the track at the Isle of Wight. Wow. What a university in Brighton. track, so big and fast. On that occasion I was Roks told us, "I always had a passion for two wheels. It started off with BMX, then Jump Bikes representing the Crayford Kestrels who have welcomed me into their club so warmly. Racing and eventually I hopped on a speedway bike on the Island last season was useful, getting for the first time about five years ago and have to know what to expect when I go back for loved it ever since. the Ladies Championship this summer. I think I'm lucky that speedway is very popular around my hometown with a dedicated training

the promoters there have done really well to arrange a special series for the Ladies and I will be doing my very best to get another podium place.

Can I just say that speedway is a sport where you rely heavily on the help and generosity of

others. There are always people supporting me along the way so thank you all (you know who you are), and I look forward to seeing everyone back at the track for what will be a really exciting season".

Harry's Game - Ashford Classic Motorcycle Show Q By Alan Turner Elk Promotions' Ashford Classic Motorcycle Show is a regular Easter Monday fixture when, for one day a year, the town's Cattle Market is given over to a bike show and jumble.

This year it was finally possible to stage a tribute to the Weslake company, once based in a factory in nearby seaside town of Rye. This was originally scheduled as a theme for the 2020 show. Harry Weslake was a pioneer of gas flow technology in internal combustion engines. He did consultancy work on just about every major production car engine produced post-war, but he also had a great interest in motorcycles.

In the late sixties, the news that Weslake was to be involved with motorcycles was followed by optimistic faith from patriotic riders that companies such as Weslake could mark the resurgence of Britain as home to a motorcycle Grand Prix contender. However, the company was a research and consultancy organisation and although generating all manner of engine designs, it was the eventually a direct substitute for Triumph's big twin that proved most successful. The engines were used to very good effect in motorcycle sport including road racing 26

(solo and sidecar), moto-cross and grasstrack sidecars as well as drag-racing. By the mid-seventies, Weslake applied its knowledge of fourvalve cylinder heads, another company speciality, to create a track racing engine.

When Peter Collins secured a speedway world championship with a Weslake engine it was the crowning glory for a gameJohn Newson's Norlake. Seed Darren Phillips "Pinching Myself" To Be Racing A Former World Speedway Number 2 Freelance Installations NORA British Upright Speedway Championship seed Darren Phillips (pictured) is looking forward to lining up alongside former Speedway World number two and World Pairs Champion Gordon Kennett who was a star man of the 70's and 80's.

Phillips said "I met Gordon last year at one of the Wightlink Warriors meetings when he was the team manager for Oxford. He's a really nice bloke and I remember as a nipper watching his all-action style from the terraces and now I am pinching myself thinking about the prospect of actually being in a race with him. He will be a big threat and I will be definitely keeping an eye on his other races!"

Phillips took part in the Upright Team Series last year at Smallbrook and was one of the

standout riders in those meeting, posting race winning times comparable with those being achieved in the main events by racers using the full modern specification laydown machinery.

Darren added "I was pleased with how I went on the Island last year and it's nice to achieve those winning times. I am really enjoying riding speedway again. I came back into it by sharing a bike with my son Ben at Scunthorpe amateur meetings about three years ago. We were sharing the bike in different classes and the machine would sometimes do twelve outings in an afternoon! We soon built another bike, so we had one each!"

An all-round motorcyclist, Malvern based Phillips now 50 and the owner of a successful sand and gravel business, started racing schoolboy motocross at a very young age and then followed his elder brother (Andy Phillips) into the Junior Grasstrack scene, where both siblings learnt the art of oval track racing with Continued overleaf 27

success. Darren remembers "We both raced Grasstrack and the natural progression was to move to Speedway when we were old enough.

We used to watch Speedway when we were lads at Cradley Heath mainly. We were Speedway fans but didn't support one particular club. The father of Cradley rider Simon Cross helped get Andy an opportunity at Wolverhampton and I followed him by getting a team place in the Junior Wolves squad around 1988. The Junior League was very competitive with strong teams who often had a main team rider at number 1.

I actually didn't race Speedway for too long and stopped racing at 17. Then three years ago it all started again! I really wasn't sure how it would go but it has been good."

Riding motocross in the interim years satisfied Darren's two wheeled cravings and it wasn't until his son Ben started riding Grasstrack that he was tempted to start racing the oval track disciplines again.

One of Darren's highlights of the last three years was in the British Amateur Upright Championship at Scunthorpe where he won an epic final from the back in thrilling fashion.

"I made a great start in the final but lost momentum on the first bend. Mick Skinner and Wayne Carter both went by me, so I was then in third place. I got by Mick and then set off after Wayne. We had a great race and I managed to cut back on him coming out of the final bend and snatched it on the line. Brilliant feeling and Wayne was superb afterwards. We

go back a long way. Right back to those early Wolverhampton days and of course Wayne had a fantastic professional career coincidentally as a rider for the former Wightlink Islanders. It was a good day.

"I like to race and use the dirt. I will be racing more on the Grasstrack this year than Speedway, but really looking to the NORA British Upright Final in August. I enjoy riding the Smallbrook track and that back straight feels like it goes on forever as you go into the banking on the pits bend. The effort the promotion put into their meetings is fantastic and they involve the crowd as much as they can which is what it's all about. I am also interested in seeing how Mark Simmonds goes, as we also go back a long way to our Junior Grasstrack days. I have seen Ian Barney in action recently at Iwade and he was going good and of course Wayne Broadhurst, Tim Curnock, Dean Felton, and Tony Atkin are class racers. The eight qualifiers will also add to the quality so it should be a great event. Fair Play!"

Darren Phillips never knows when he is beaten and has a fantastic all action style which will be a superb spectacle around the big, pacy Smallbrook track. An all-round natural rider and a fast racer who admits himself, as long as he is racing regularly, he doesn't tend to need too much practice.

Yet another rider who is sure to be in close contention come Finals Day on the 11th of August.

Waltham Chase MCC Platinum Jubilee Weekend - Camping Continue

Waltham Chase MCC are holding two trials and a Camping weekend to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee. Any excuse to get to the woods!

You can book pitches for Caravans, Campervans, Tents and both trials for the Weekend via the ACU portal.

Camping is available for up to five nights from Wednesday 1st June at Cadnam, within the New Forest National Park There is on-site coarse fishing as a bonus.

Bill Beeson Trial Charity Trial - 24th April

Darren Haines Q By John Eckhart Photos by Gary Dowzall Wycombe and District Motorcycle Club held their Bill Beeson Memorial Trial near Stokenchurch this year in aid of the Physically Handicapped Able-Bodied Club, (PHAB Club) and the Thames Valley Air Ambulance Charities. No awards will be given and the Club is delighted to be able to pass on £430 to be shared between the charities.

The woodland was very dry after a period of low rainfall so the sections were set with cambered turns and climbs on banks and roots. Although it was dry the loose surface made some turns and climbs quite slippery.

An entry of 59 riders competed in the trial comprised 4 laps of ten sections marked out with four routes of varying severity.

The expert contest for the Bill Beeson Memorial Cup was won by Daniel Greeves who lost 6 marks and finished ahead of William Clark (17 marks) and Ryan Tomkins (21 marks).

Daniel lost all his marks at the beginning of the trial with a 5 on section 3 and a dab immediately after on section 4. Section 3 which included a log crossing at the top of a bank took the most marks from the experts.

Young George Clark riding the Youth A class had an extremely good ride to lose only 26 marks on the expert route.

The Intermediate riders had a dedicated (Orange) route and Darren Haines came out on top after a most cleans tie breaker with Martin Greeves. Both riders lost 16 marks just ahead of Wycombe's Jason Clifford who lost 17. Most marks were lost at section ten with it's twisty route between trees on the side of a small bank.

On the middle (yellow) route Wycombe's Kai Morris was best Novice losing 33 marks comfortably ahead of Roger Thornton on 48 and Dad Jim Morris on 65. The best Clubman on this route was Russ Olivant who lost 12 marks just ahead of Brian Tomkins on 15. Dave Fisher was third after losing 19 marks. Marcus Haynes won the Twin-shock class losing 12 marks well ahead of Kevin Fossey and Paul Meader who lost 45 & 46 respectively.

Pete Haines won the Sportsman Hard class losing 14 marks over 5 middle route sections and 5 easy sections. Howard Cureton-Taylor was the only other finisher and he lost 59 marks Section 1 with it's tight turns was the biggest mark stealer for the riders on the easy route. The British Bike Easy Class was won

by Nick James on his DOT Villiers who lost 7 on section 1 and 15 in total. Wayne Hutton was second on his Tiger Cub losing 25 and Chris Pickup, also Cub mounted, was third on 45. The Sportsman Easy class was won

by Robert Ray (20 marks) followed by Brett Buckle (30 marks) and Jerry Pack on 40.

SUPPLEMENTARY REGULATIONS JURISDICTION: Held under the National Sporting Code, Environmental Code and Standing TRIAL Regulations of the A.C.U., Trial Regulations of the organising Centre, these Supplementary Regulations and any final instructions that may be issued.

MEDICATION: It is your responsibility to declare at signing on if you are taking any drugs, you may be tested.

CHILD PROTECTION: The Secretary of the Meeting is the point of contact (National Sporting Code 6.16).

ENTRIES: Having entered the event, if you become a non starter you must explain your absence to the promoting club. Failure to do so is a breach of the Rules. All entrants must show their club membership and ACU affiliation card when signing on at the event and state the number on the entry form. No Card = No Ride.

ENTRY DETAILS: Open: 2nd May Close: 9th June Fees: Solo: £20 Youth: £15 No on the day entry.

COURSE: To be confirmed at the start. Without roadwork. A, B, C and D Routes. All A Routes Red and Blue with Green Deviations. All B Routes Red and Blue. All C Routes Red and Blue with White Deviations. All D Routes Red and Blue with Yellow Deviations. The course will be marked with Direction Arrows and must be ridden in the marked direction.

CLASSES: Expert - (A Route), Clubman/Expert (50/50 A & B), Clubman (B Route), Veteran - Over 50 (C Route), Sportsman - Under 50 (C Route), Novice - Adult D Route, Pre-65 C, Pre65 D, Twin Shock C, Twin Shock D, Youth A, Youth B, Youth C. Only Trials machines, fitted with Trials tyres can be used at this event. It will not be possible to accept entries on the day. No one-day ACU licenses or Club Membership is available at the start.

AWARDS: The St Paul Trophy for Best Expert.

GENERAL: Restriction on the number of Riders - Social distancing and keeping everyone safe is of paramount importance now the UK Government have lifted some of the restrictions on lockdown. As such, it may be necessary to limit the number of competitors to maintain social distancing measures not only in the paddock but also at Sections. Social Distancing Measures in line with UK Government Advice/Guidelines issued should be considered when parking vehicles to maintain a suitable space (suggest one vehicles width) space in between each vehicle to main safe distancing.

You must not enter this event if you have any symptoms related to the Covid-19 virus – including (but not limited to) a fever, a new persistent cough or a change in or loss of taste or smell. If you develop symptoms after entering please cancel your booking by email.

By entering this event you will be accepting and agreeing to be bound by the conditions/precautions contained in these Supplementary Regulations.

Method of Marking - The method of marking will be TSR22A – Stop Allowed. Observers will use score sheets for marking.

Rider Numbers - Members of Waltham Chase MCC should enter with their Club Riding Number. All other riders will be issued with a riding number.

Directions for Venue - The venue location, driving instructions and any additional joining information will be issued by email to all riders three days before the event.

Catering - Catering Van Confirmed.

Toilets - There are no toilet facilities at this Trial. Please consider before entering.

Travel to and from the Venue - Travel to and from the circuit/venue would be dependent on current UK Government advice / guidance in place at the time, in terms of the number of persons in a vehicle and those persons being from the household / support bubble etc. If competitors / officials or someone in their household or support bubble are showing coronavirus symptoms, everyone in that household / support bubble should stay at home. If a competitor / official or a member of the household or support bubble are contacted as part of the test and trace program, the individual contacted should stay at home.

If that individual becomes symptomatic, everyone in the support bubble must self-isolate and stay at home.

Montage Prints, Canvases, Photobooks etc are all available. If you have won an event or a championship why not have a special print watermarked with your name and achievement.
