Again we see a good variety of motorcycle events in the weeks ahead.

Grass Track racing enthusiasts in the south can look forward to three events over three weekends. Competitors may well be in with a chance to race as the Frittenden club host the ACU British Grasstrack Championships which will also feature support classes. Just one week later the Grasstrack Banter team put on their second event of the year at Owslebury offering five adult solo classes and two sidecar classes. There will also be a chance for youth to take part in what will be a full day of racing activity. The last day of the month the country’s best will head towards the other Frittenden venue at Dig Dog Lane where the British Masters Championship is being run in the capable hands of GTSA Racing.

Motocross competitors also have something to look forward to this month, with events for both adult and youth taking place on a variety of tracks.

There is no let up in trials activity, with four clubs offering weekday evening events. Events also take place every weekend and of particular note is The Bob Twigg Trophy Trial run by Milton Buzzard on the 10th; Bob of course was Editor of this journal and an all round trials enthusiast. The Barham club will be holding their annual Charity Trial in aid of Pilgrims Hospice and offer a four route course and would welcome entries from both pre 67 and twinshock competitors.

The Wessex Plant Hire Trials Sidecar Championship will pay a visit to Kent next month. Competitors will face two laps of an eighteen section course set out in woodland near Sevenoaks in Kent. Organised by the OWLS Motor Club, the event will take place on Saturday August 13th and help with observing is always welcome, you will be guaranteed an entertaining day seeing the country’s best in action Shows are a popular activity during the summer months, offering the chance to socialise for many enthusiasts. Most shows feature displays of modern, classic and vintage machinery as well as trade stands and some often include an autojumble. One event taking place next month is slightly different in that it will include a sprint in addition to all the usual show features. The Heritage Sprint takes place on the 14th August at the heritage site, Betteshanger Park near Deal in Kent. This year the sprint will also feature a ladies class. The frame kits were built for many engines, including Triumph Twins, BSA Singles, and Sammy Miller Museum Matchless. On the subject of Speedway, I managed to get along to the Isle of Sheppey for the NDL League Match. Remaining home fixtures include July 10th Berwick; July 24th Oxford: August 21st Mildenhall: August 28th Plymouth: Sept 4th Armadale: 11th Sept Belle Vue. And over on the Isle of Wight, their concentrated programme, mainly for the British Upright Championship, includes the following dates: 23/30 June: 7/14/21/28/ July: 2/4/11/18/25 August and 1/ September.

And at Sammy Miller's Museum, July includes on 3rd July an Italian Bikes Owners Ride In for the AJS 70th Anniversary Celebration on 28 July.

Battle Of Britain 2022 - Sandhurst Bridge Farm, Frittenden 29th May Q By Alan Turner After so many months since the last event, the South-Eastern Centre grass track season could finally get into gear for 2022. The Frittenden Club's Battle of Britain carries an unwritten guarantee that the meeting and its long tradition always turns out good racing.

By the time the tapes went up for the first race all the way round the familiar Sandhurst Bridge Farm oval there was a sizeable crowd ignoring the dampish forecast and waiting for a quality entry to liven the afternoon.

With notable absentees James Shanes and Zach Wajtknecht out in Germany along with Chris 'Bomber' Harris upholding national pride in long-track and Edward Kennett still laid up from a speedway injury, there would be some different front-runners, at least in the big solos.

Occasional light rain kept the dust suppressed during the 44 qualifying heats. By then, most classes had clear leaders, posting three unbeaten rides. It was Andrew Whittaker among the 350s, Luke Harris in the 250s.

Bob Dolman dominated the Uprights and Josh Goodwin/Liam Brown topped the 500 Sidecars, incidentally followed home each time by Natasha Bartlett/Josh Russell. And probably no surprise that Mark Cossar/Gareth Williams fronted Right-Hand Sidecars.

Of course there was plenty of back story.

Many of the heats had been hard-fought races.

by Darren Morris/Simon Tillman's errant lefthand outfit, thankfully, there was no lasting damage. Martin Cuff's strong first showing did not last when motor problems proved terminal. A few races later Alfie Bowtell's first outing ended with him launching off the start line. At the first corner in the same race, Paul Hurry (fresh from a manager's role on the above-mentioned team long-track) came to grief, but fought back up to fourth. The bike's suspension damage apparent next time out forced him to withdraw from the meeting. In the right-handers, ever-improving Trevor & Sam Heath managed to head Paul Whitelam/Richard Webb to claim a heat win after a close race.

Arran Butcher and Kai Ward, the latter catching a nasty high-side that required the ambulance and reports of a shoulder injury. Finally the last heat for the 500 solos turned out to be almost a dress rehearsal for the Final, but more on that later.

It was obviously tough in the right-hand chairs. Three second places got popular combination Neil Owen/Jason Farwell on the faithful Godden V-twin only as far as the B Final.

This race was soon aborted when Will Offen/ Ricky Pay came to a sudden halt. The outfit's frame was broken at the headstock leaving the machine to cease forward motion - with sudden and immediate effect. The crew was fine, but the outfit's stricken remains had to be bodily lifted from the track. The re-run allowed reserve crew Dale & Jordan Fish to join in and they made no mistake as they took an early lead. However, Owen/Farwell were after that last chance for A Final entry and got their reward with a hard-charging ride eventually getting them to the front.

The 350 solos were next. Could Andrew Whittaker continue his winning ways? Dave Mears decided he couldn't, having already followed him home three times through the round-robin qualifying. A flying start resulted in a tapes to flag win with Whittaker then Luke Clifton next home. The 250s continued with the close competition they had been serving up all day. Luke Harris made it a fourth win, with Cameron Taylor second.

Chris Still was the best of the two-strokes, his KTM taking him to third on the podium.

Bob Dolman has been dominant in Upright class racing at Frittenden for years. However,

the class has been getting more popular and drawing some talented riders into the fray.

Could anyone dig a little deeper to challenge the status quo? Neither of the differing styles of Rodney McDonald and Jason Prynne proved quicker and the old order remained as before.

Rob Heath/Kyle Fish took the initial lead in the Left-Handers' final, but Will Penfold/ Bradley Reynolds got past and led the rest of the race. Regular front-runner Alex Balman retired. And Danny & Harry Hill took third.

Josh Goodwin and Liam Brown had taken comfortable wins in all their heats. They led the final but Shaun Hughes/Louis Bennett provided the action as they moved from fourth to second, but they were out of time to challenge further as Dan Berwick/ Mark Hopkins were happy with third.

The 500 Solos looked like a Charley Powell master-class as he swept into the first bend with Alfie Bowtell and Jake Mulford in his wake. However, next time round Mulford took a bold outside line to lead into the finish straight and repeat that earlier heat victory where Powell and Bowtell had been followed by Martyn Sturgeon and Gareth Hickmott, although the last two reversed their fourth and fifth positions in the final.

The sidecar final saw a rare defeat for Mark Cossar/Gareth Williams, beaten not by an opponent, but by the track. They missed the start and Colin Blackbourn/Carl Pugh took command as they were harried for a lap or so until Cossar/Williams found a way through.

resultant red flag meant their day was done.

On the re-start, the order was Blackbourn and Terry Saunters/Liam Brown, but the leading outfits were being hounded by Trevor & Sam Heath and Paul Whitelam/Richard Webb.

The last chance qualifiers Owen/Farwell were in the mix on the first time of asking, but rounded out the field with a fifth place when the second effort went full distance.

It would not be a Battle of Britain without an over-flying Spitfire. And it happened, all part of another memorable meeting. Thanks

to all involved for a meeting that added more lustre to the Battle of Britain's reputation.

Next Frittenden date will be 17 July, for the British Championships for the 250 solos, 350 solos, 500 Sidecars and Left Hand Sidecars. There will be an invitation-only support class (i.e. non-championship) for right hand sidecars. The Masters (31 July) is the equivalent championship event for 500 Solos and Right Hand Sidecar classes.

Despite the warm weather, the bigger than average Expert class were greeted with a well groomed and watered track to start the day.

Robert Wood took back to back wins in the first two Expert class races, before a mechanical issue put him out of the running for the final encounter. Jamie Richmond showed great speed in trying to chase down Rob, setting the fastest lap of the day in pursuit of Rob in race one. Despite a tip-over in race two, Jamie took the day's overall after a fine win in race three. Shaun Robinson finished second overall by a single point from newly upgraded Jordan Wills who continues to impress. Both suffered incidents in one leg making the overalls close.

Rob Wood leads the Experts The Junior A class once again saw some fast racing from our future Expert stars. Connor Haligan won both finals despite some serious attention from Robbie Hollis, second on both occasions after leading race one until two laps to go.

Jordan Hughes maintained the classes consistency finishing third each time.

In the Junior B class just two points separated the top three. Lee Hayward took the overall after winning race two, Gary Hoptrough

just ahead of Jack FennymoreBirch and Spencer Taylor.

Lee and Spencer shared the wins, whilst Jack FennymoreBirch finished twice runner-up.

In the Premier O40 class, visiting Stuart Scott took 3 wins ahead of South Midland Centre regular Greg Cox. Steven Chilvers took the final podium position. Bruce Garside took the Elite O50 class overall after some very closely battling with Greg Cox in the combined races. Sidney Richardson took

second after finishing ahead of third placed Tony Fricker in races 2 and 3. In the Super O60 class Stephen Hollins dominated with two wins in the afternoon. Reg Willis put in another great ride to take second from Mark Stephens.

Reece Wain took overalls in both the combined 2 Stroke and U40 classes, ahead of Scott Goodson and Ty Atkins in the U40s, ultra-consistent Ian Tindle and Connor Dickens in the 2 Strokes.

The NGR class finished in the same order every time towards the front. A Hat-trick of wins saw Gary Hoptrough take the overall. Second each time went to Peter Cook, with Tim Clark in third.

Waltham Chase MCC - August Camping Long Weekend

The second Waltham Chase Camping "Long Weekend" for 2022 will run from Wednesday 3rd August through to Sunday 7th August at Cadnam, near Southampton.

Caravans, Campervans and Tents are all very welcome on site where toilets, but no showers are provided. Pitch fees are £10 per night per unit.

There is open forest adjacent to the venue, with a couple of pubs within walking distance.

Round 4 of the Club's Summer Series will be held

on the Saturday and Round 6 of The Club Championship be Sunday's sporting activity.

Both have a 11am start time with engines off at 4pm for Campers quiet time.

Offers to help create and mark out new sections on the Thursday and Friday are appreciated.

Pre booked day entrants are very welcome to ride, you do not need to camp to enter either Trial.

The Club would appreciate offers to observe, with £20 paid to volunteers for the Sunday Trial and volunteers for the Saturday

event which is reflected by the reduced entry fee.

Youth Riders can ride on both days for one fee.

Bookings for Camping and rides is now open via the ACU portal.

There is no communal BBQ this weekend, but there will be plenty of opportunities to socialise.

Q By Andy Withers When you're ninety most people would be thinking of putting their feet up, but not George Greenland, at ninety years of age in July he's more interested in keeping his feet up. He's still competing most weekends and sometimes on both days at home or in Europe. Everyone is different and you hear many riders saying "I'm too old to ride" when in their 60's or 70's, but George isn't one of them although he admits riding in some ways is becoming harder.

George began riding at the age of sixteen after a chance encounter with a "muddy trials bike" Each Monday on the way home from work he saw a local man (who turned out to 14

be Fred Pendle) washing his muddy bike. The question was why he had to do this every week? Fred said he rode trials, and there was a local meeting coming up if George would like to come along to watch. George was immediately hooked, bought a bike and won his first trophy riding a rigid girder forked 250cc Royal Enfield to the Novice Award at a Salisbury and District MCC trial a year later in 1949. In the early 1950's having bought a 500T Norton George racked up a list of first class and premier awards at local and national trials, first class and premier awards at the Ringwood LC & MCC Committee Cup, a first class at the Perce Simon, two 500cc Cups at the Jack White and a premier award at the Stroud Team Trial riding with Gordon Jackson and Johnny Draper are amongst them as well as top fifty finishes in the Southern Experts.

National Service intervened in 1953 which meant riding mainly a 350cc G3L Matchless for initially two years as a despatch rider but also competing in long distance trials. Taking the army tests for the International Six Days Trial (ISDT) George was named as reserve for the 1954 Army team in Wales but was not called upon to compete. Leaving the army George bought a BSA Gold Star for a good price as he fancied one, it was a "reserve" machine for the ISDT although it did have a rigid frame which he didn't fancy. Because of this, BSA threw in a springer frame as part of the deal. Rigid or Sprung he didn't get on with the Gold Star although his wife Maureen rode it between Bournemouth and Salisbury to visit relatives. This was one of very few regrets, as Hugh Viney offered George a Matchless after National Service but he decided to buy the Gold star instead.

To this day George is always looking for ways to re engineer machines to make them perform that bit better, he has it down to a fine art. After returning to the Army because of the Suez Crisis he was offered a Triumph Tiger Cub project which his then employer Des Smallshaw had started but not finished due to medical issues.

He completed the project and gained great success on the "Smallshaw Triumph", he told me with a big grin that he beat the Rickmans on a special test at the Perce Simon Trial against

their much bigger machinery. George moved to Oxford to work for British Leyland solving design problems with their cars, the Smallshaw Triumph has been photographed inside George and Maureen's new flat. George decided he wanted a bigger machine and Bill Faulkner who had a motorcycle shop in Oxford said he could have an engine from a machine that had crashed, it had a bent crankshaft. Another project followed with George building his own frame for the 500cc Twin, it rode well but unfortunately the frame began to get longer. Returning to Salisbury to live George asked Robin Rhind Tutt (Robbie) to build him a frame for the Triumph. this was the start of a lifelong friendship and shared enjoyment of motorcycles. More trials success followed with the frame being modified several times and George still has about the third version with a duplex frame which was recommissioned and ridden by Neil Clarke, George's test rider and son in law in 2020. It is still very lively and Neil looped it into a hedge in the middle of the club trial.

At the age of 40, George decided to make a change of motorcycling direction, Mike Guilford who worked with Robbie at Wasp had made a trials sidecar outfit as he had decided to ride in trials. Mike, a top sidecar scrambler found trials riding dangerous between all the tight obstacles, so George was offered the outfit.

He said in his first trial in the dry with friend Dave Lane in the chair they came last as the front wheel kept flying in the air and they had little control. On the second trial which was in the mud, with the all the experience of the Triumph Twin solo they found loads of grip and upset the regulars by winning the trial.

Having ridden the Welsh Two Day Enduro on a solo George decided to enter on the sidecar against the advice of those who had done it before. But George and Dave changed the gearing and entered, finishing second, only missing the win by checking in a minute early at a checkpoint. There are two strands of a very successful three wheel riding career in the 1970's and early 1980's, George and Dave rode the Triumph, a CCM and a works Cossack, which included a second place in the British Experts and British Sidecar Championship on the CCM.

George says a twisted knee robbed him of the British Sidecar Championship title. Works rides for Kawasaki and Suzuki followed with first Phil Whitlock and then Neil Clarke in the chair, with George re engineering the machines and feeding back to the factory to make kits and make the machines more rideable.

The enduro strand was where George gained most success with five British Sidecar Enduro Titles in six years. Working with Robbie at Wasp to build and modify the RT frames, three titles were won with Dick Ramplee in 1977, 1979 and 1980 and one in 1981 with Phil Whitlock, all on Norton Wasp outfits.

Then in 1982 with the 1000cc Wasp which George says was the best outfit he rode, Nick Moores was the passenger. George says he was unbeaten in the enduros for two years with the exception of one mechanical breakdown.

George prepared the Norton engines for Wasp and he spent two years travelling Europe

to the World Sidecarcross rounds looking after Terry Good's engines and he went into Europe with his own outfit to race at the Le Touquet Beach Race, winning the sidecar event three times. On one of the return trips after the race, George, Jack Matthews and Eddie Chandler talked about bringing a beach race to the UK. This idea came to fruition after a lot of negotiation to race at Weston Super Mare where George and Maureen ran the beach race for eighteen years before handing over the reigns, it was so popular even in the first year that the competitors and spectators clogged up the M5 and ate and drank Weston dry.

Having made many friends in Europe racing and preparing sidecars George went back to Pre65 solo trials riding in Europe mainly in Belgium, Germany and France. In the UK fifteen years of the Pre65 Scottish and multiple

Talmags and Arbuthnots were on the calendar.

George at eighty nine rode the Talmag this year on his C15 Wasp and the Arbuthnot on a BSA Goldstar outfit with daughter Karen.

The entry for the Arbuthnot is already in for 2022 at 90 years of age. He finds walking the sections and having the energy to get round some events a challenge, but there are no plans to retire yet. Motorcycling and trials riding is George's life with four generations of the family riding together, at practices and local trials whilst wife Maureen, daughter Karen and son in law Neil enjoy the European trips. What started with a "muddy bike" still has that theme. George still loves riding in the mud, he always finds grip where others can't and it's not surprising if he tops the local trials Pre65 classes especially in the mud.

Surrey Schoolboy Trials Club 50th Anniversary

Surrey Schoolboy Trials Club celebrated their 50th Anniversary over 2 days on May 21st and May 22nd.

The weather was fantastic with glorious sunshine on both days. The riders were self-marking which made it interesting when Laura Johnson had to compile the results.

Lots of laughter and banter was to be heard as old rivals were trying to out ride each other. Some Father and Son/ daughter teams were battling it out at the sections. Ex Surrey Schoolboy member and National and International Trials Rider Jack Dance along

with his brother Max, came and enjoyed the day, as well as entertaining young and old with his truly magnificent riding skills.

Colin Boniface and Clive Dopson and his sister Maggie (Cake Lady) came to support the event, as their fathers were 2 of the original founders.

Maggie had baked some amazing cakes and with her assistant Jane created a wonderful display of photos around and under the cakes, so many faces turned up to support the event, not all riding but just to come and have a look through the memorabilia tent. Thank you to all those who brought

along photos and newspaper clippings, trophies etc. lots of laughter could be heard as Individuals spotted one another in their youth.

A Band (SPK) came to play on the Saturday evening, to keep the adults entertained, and some wonderful dance moves were witnessed, you know who you are!! Thanks to Sole Events who provided us with delicious food throughout the weekend. It truly was a fantastic event well done to all involved and here's to the next 50 years.

Kent & Sussex Camden Cup/Team Trial

This annual trial features a format of one route ridden by all classes. This year there were 8 teams.

Teams comprise an Expert, Intermediate and Novice with some riders riding out of their normal class to form a team.

The sections were well laid out and attainable by most riders and was great fun enjoyed by all.

The 23rd Annual Timber Woods LD Trial - Sunday, 17th July

The Sidcup Club's 2022 Long Distance Trial returns to the Kent Gliding Club, Squids Gate, Challock, near Ashford Kent. The route will be about 85 miles on roads, lanes and byways of east Kent, with ten or so LDT bikefriendly trials sections around the route.

Over 80 riders have already entered, but there's room for a few more. I certainly would not like to have 180 as in the Witley 100 LDT as I'm sure the residents of Kent would not appreciate 180 bikes passing their gardens on a summer Sunday!

Bikes and riders must be road legal and you need some means of holding 11 A4 sheets of the Roadbook on your bike so you can see the relevant part while you are riding. And don't forget it sometimes rains, even in Kent in the summer!

Trials sections need observers, so if you want to ride the route for free and help the Club, please let me know. Observers on bikes can start before the first competitors, ride the route to their section, observe the entry, then pack up the section and continue riding the route to the end. Observers without bikes are equally

welcome as most sections are within a short walk along byways.

ACU South Eastern 2022 Centre Trials Championships

Tenterden's Man of Kent "John Buttle Trophy" Trial at Crabtree Farm, Cranbrook, Kent on 17th July; Bexleyheath's Langmaid Trial at Knowle Farm, Broadoak, Heathfield, East Sussex on 24th July.

July is usually a fairly quiet month for trials, but this year there are three Centre Championship trials taking place: The OWLS "Brian Hodges Trial" (formally the Whitley Mill) at Bowens Farm, Penshurst, Kent on 3rd July;

All three trials are Championship rounds for Adult and Youth riders in Elite Experts, Experts, Intermediates and Novices, and Over 40s and Over 50s classes.

At the time of writing, a week before the end of June, all classes in all three trials are well short of being full. So the chance is there for riders to score a hatful of SE Championship points. All three can be entered on-line using the ACU entry system.

You should note that the Folkestone Club will not be running the Chunnel non-Expert Trial due to the loss of land. The next SE Championship Trial isn't until 25th September with Tenterden's Weald of Kent Trial.

GENERAL: Restriction on the number of Riders Social distancing and keeping everyone safe is of paramount importance now the UK Government have lifted some of the restrictions on lockdown. As such, it may be necessary to limit the number of competitors to maintain social distancing measures not only in the paddock but also at Sections. Social Distancing Measures in line with UK Government Advice/Guidelines issued should be considered when parking vehicles to maintain a suitable space (suggest one vehicles width) space in between each vehicle to main safe distancing.

You must not enter this event if you have any symptoms related to the Covid-19 virus – including (but not limited to) a fever, a new persistent cough or a change in or loss of taste or smell. If you develop symptoms after entering please cancel your booking by email.

Sadly, for the Island side success eluded them in this meeting as the all-round strength of both visiting teams saw them take top spots. Warriors team manager Steve Piper can be proud of the efforts of his quartet, but he will be ruing the fact that his charges could only produce four race wins on the night and more tellingly, his riders failed to score in eight of the fifteen races.
