On a different note, the injuries that many riders suffer in events make me cringe, though I have had several "broken bits" in trials (Thanks to me being useless on the handlebars)! I have never been brave enough (or rich enough) to compete in either motocross or enduros but I can imagine that horrid feeling of "Oh dear this is going to hurt"! The injury that Dave Knight MBE suffered when he hit some concrete hidden in a puddle must have been ghastly, the pictures in TMX told us how serious it was, tough chap David!

The Manchester motorbike show was a huge success again well covered by the TMX "mob". There was a mention of a sectioned LE Velocette engine, I wonder if it was the engine I "saved" when I worked at a certain garage, it was due for the dump but I managed to spirit it away, it had been beautifully done by a friend of mine. I must not say where I worked then! It looked a super show which turns me back to those awful shows at Earls Court in London, not much there for the off roaders and the beer was too dear and yes awful!

Now off road sport is gathering speed after the pandemic it is interesting to see that the ACU's online system of entering has gained over the old paper entries that we used to use. It's not much use if you are not PC "savvy" but it sure makes the sec's life much easier. Some South Midland clubs have made signing on much easier by making up a big board with each riders number in slots, riders now come up to the board and take their allocated number, the organisers know if the number has gone you are there.

See, I am making it so much easier for all of you! But of course it does mean that some clubs do not take late entries or "on the day", so lads and lasses get on that computer!

In March 1965 John Davis the South Midland Review editor said "what about the Review"?

Fifty seven years ago many folk at the centre board meetings were worried about the future of the centre magazine.

So, it is my opinion that a mag' like TSM is well worth the twenty odd pounds a year you pay for it, the price of half a pint of beer a week!

Pile them up in the shed

and you can read them at any time, you can't do that with an electronic device though I'm sure some "tech wizard" will tell me otherwise!

Every club in all the three centres can send reports, advertise their events and firms can publicise their products at good prices. Plus you can read our exciting missives! You can send letters of approval

(or otherwise) and put in your clubs calendar for the year, the scope is enormous.

PLEASE take out a subscription to TSM, It must not go down! Paper books and magazines must survive, did Will Shakespeare have a PC or a mobile phone, Keep us going!!

The future is in your hands.

Surrey Schoolboy Trials Club 50th Anniversary Surrey Schoolboy Trials club are celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year, we are holding a Trial on Saturday 21st May and Sunday 22nd May, The trial on Saturday will be the main one with riders enjoying some great sections set out by Mark Watmore, (who is one of the original SSTC), catching up with old friends, camping available.

Then on Sunday the sections will be open to have another go and see if you can beat your friends old and new. If anyone has any memorabilia from their days in Surrey Schoolboys,

North Kent Trials Combine Q By Liam Seamer Photos by Sue Gaines We are two trials into the NKTC championship for 2022 and we are looking like we will have a full calendar of 12 rounds of events. This is thanks to Bexleyheath, Double 5 hosting two events each and the NKTC hosting two events in its own right as an amalgamation of several clubs combined, so hopefully your ready for a full year's competition, and to be willing to help out at one point in the year.

It has been a rule since the NKTC competition was started, but we are going to be enforcing a rule this year much more strictly to try and ensure that the sport is fairer for everyone. If you fail to observe a round of the NKTC you will receive a -20 points deduction against your end of year aggregate score. However, we have also tweaked the rules slightly this year to try and help the smaller clubs, you are permitted to ride your own event, providing that you have observed at least once already or have your name down to observe at a trial later in the year. The 20 point deduction will happen irrespective of how many events you ride. The calendar has 12 events scheduled in, the final year's aggregate score will take into account the best 8 rounds of each rider, this allows for missed events and the all-important 8

Ethan Dowland event each rider must observe, as result no rider will be handicapped for missing an event due to observation duties. To try and keep track of the people that have observed I have

created a live spreadsheet on the front page of the website nktctrial.com where people can input there own names down on the event they are willing to observe (it works best on laptop). This has been very successful so far for both January and February with all observer positions being filled up a week before the trial commences, however please look forward into the calendar and consider when you will be able to observe as we still need observers for the March combine onwards.

In other news we would like to thank Dennis Wakeman for his services as the treasurer for the NKTC for the best part of the past 20 years,

he has however announced that he is stepping down from this role. In a turn of good news we have had a volunteer step forward to take this position up and we will be arranging a hand over period between them and make the announcement when official. In addition to Dennis, we would also like to pay thanks to Paul Taylor who has arranged the trophies for the NKTC winners each year, sorting out engravings etc, he unfortunately is also needing to step away from this role, so we also need someone who would be willing to get trophies engraved for the winners of each class.

Please do not openly dismiss this recruitment chase assuming someone else will do it, more and more is being done by fewer and fewer (across all trials clubs) and if we are not able to find people that are willing to help out then the future of the NKTC will be put into doubt. We appreciate that everyone is busy in this modern world but a few hours every so often really helps us all out.....especially sacrificing a day every so often to observe!.

We look forward to seeing you all over the course of the year in what will hopefully be a friendly and competitive year of trials for all!

Britbike top dog Wayne Hutton persuaded the Tigercub around for a loss of 23 with Kevin Allen Snr 185 Bantam 5 adrift. A superb performance was applied by Steve Clements on the big Triumph Twin. Steve opted for the Britbike 50/50 today and with a tally of twelve this was one of the rides of the day. Steve had plenty of power to hand for the short sharp

climbs of sections 4 and 5.

Q By Alan Turner Too often there's mention in TSM of once regular events no longer taking place, memories of disbanded clubs and lost venues so it is a welcome relief to peruse the recently issued 2022 calendar for the National Hill Climb Association (NHCA).

Between the start of April and the beginning of October the club lists no less than 37 days of competition. Admittedly, this is nation-wide but must still be seen as compelling evidence of a club and type of event that has a strong following.

Traditionally, the club season begins and ends with an event at Hartland Quay, in north Devon.

Other events are held at places like Manor Farm, near Charmouth, Dorset, or Castle, a track near Lostwithiel in Cornwall as well as better-known locations such as Prescott or Shelsley Walsh.

Most were established, and continue to be run, by car clubs, but the motorcycles share the same meetings. Regular use and investment means facilities at some venues are at least as good as some of the permanent race circuits.

This is usually narrow and the way up will be far from straight, often deviously twisty. Competition is against the clock. Single riders, sidecars, or thee-wheelers are held at the start line and a green light indicates the course is clear for them. A rider leaves when he or she is ready and movement is what will trigger the beam to start timing the run. With the sophisticated control systems at some of the more established courses, the next rider will be allowed to leave when the

For spectators, this make the action fast and furious, for competitors, it gives the opportunity for meetings to accommodate larger entries.

Open classes are broken into familiar capacities: 250, 350, 500 etc. up to 1400cc.

There are also classes for Vintage, Forgotten Era and Road Legal. The last is an opportunity for competitors to turn back the clock, if they wish, as they can ride to the meeting on the bike on which they will compete.

Bikes need to have torque rather than outright power, light weight, good brakes and flickability are highly desirable, so the open classes are the province of moto-cross or enduro machines. Taking advantage of modern technology, they are fitted with the stickiest of road tyres as well as liberal sprinklings of crash bungs and lever guards, making the bike as crash-proof as possible, while hoping the unloaded rider will remain equally resilient.

The larger-capacity open classes are often sports bikes prepared in 'streetfighter' style.

A typical climb will be over in less than a minute. However, to be successful, everything that happens in those seconds needs to be spot-on. Getting off the start smoothly, braking, accelerating in and out of the bends, maintaining maximum corner speeds, getting the gear-changes and their timing right. And then trying to improve at the next attempt! Hillclimbing is a highly addictive intense adrenalin rush.

Like most other clubs the NHCA uses

modern media, but its magazine 'Hillclimber' is an entertaining read. Rather than possible reliance on a few regular contributors, race reports are submitted by whoever causes the first red flag at an event. While that may sound harsh on the face of it, a red flag can result from a breakdown (forgetting to turn on the fuel, anyone?), perhaps overcooking a corner and ending up off track or a trip to earth where the damage to pride is usually greater than any physical injury. The guilty party will be found in the paddock and presented with an envelope for their literary penance contribution. The result is a magazine with a glorious spread of styles and viewpoints.

Walker Memorial Trial - Sunday 6th February The following is a look back from Roy Piles of the organising Sittingbourne club at the third round of the ACU South Eastern Trials Championship.

This was the day of the above event, but this all started in my head several months ago planning the course and sections we might use to come up with a trial that would suit all the classes and give them all a nice day out. The main problem these days is how many observers are we going to get. Going back into the sixty's I could mark out 40 sections with 40 observers, one circuit all the same route,sadly 16

all gone.

To start I would like to thank Chris Anderson for all his hard work compiling the programme and helping with the cutting out of all the sections and Jon Cousins,(fresh from helping with the laying out of the Dunlop trial) also new member David Griffiths and any other members I may have forgotten.

Come the Sunday morning and after all the bright mornings we had been having, it was

high winds and driving rain. By 10 am it had stopped raining and just left us with strong and drying winds and this very quickly dried out the sections, resulting in low marks lost.

Wycombe and District MCC held their round of the South Midland Expert, Intermediate and Novice Championship in the Crowell Hill woods above Chinnor, Oxon.

This is the first trial at this venue for three years after cancellations due to Covid and the extreme weather in 2020.

The trial consisted of three laps of 14 sections with lots of steep chalk climbs, roots and fallen trees. The trial started in the dry but the rain came in during the second hour making some sections particularly on the lower slopes of the wood very slippery as the trial progressed. Section 1 with a climb up a bank and section 14 with fallen tree crossings were the worst affected. The trial was marked out with separate routes for the three Championship classes.

The Best Expert was North Berks' Brett Harbud who lost 27 and finished just one mark ahead of Nene Valley's Joseph Collins. Joseph was just ahead of Brett on the tough sections 1 and 14 but lost a 5 to Brett's single dab on the slippery bank of section 2. Tom Haslam lost 48 to take the third place ahead of Vincent Branch who

Youth A riders George Clark and Max Golla did very well on their 125 Betas to finish on the full expert route of the big Crowell sections. George lost 138 and Max 163.

This year the Intermediate riders had their own (middle) route through the sections rather than the 50/50 arrangement of previous years and this was very popular with the riders. Wycombe's Ian Mackman was the winner losing 29 ahead of Bailey Tibbs on 38. Ian was the only intermediate rider not to stop over the logs of section 14.

The next 3 places were Mick Marshall on 50 ahead of Paul Heron on 62 followed by Steve Lane on 69.

The Novices rode the easiest white route and young Kai Morris was best losing 32 marks. Kai was the only novice not to lose 5 marks on the last lap of section 1 and kept his losses to 7 on the very slippery section 14. Michael Maslin was second on 58 ahead of Marcus Anthony on 84 and Andy Baker on 101 marks.

Round One ACU Wulfsport Trial GB

Come for an entertaining day out and watch the top trials riders plus the upcoming youth riders like the Hemingway Brothers and Alfie Lampkin Toby Martyn from Devon riding the TRS will be defending his title, though expect him to be pushed hard by world championship riders Jack and Dan Peace and Scorpa rider Billy Green.

World 125 Champion Jack Dance will be making his debut in the premier class and we all wish him well for the year.

Trial 2 Champion will bound to have a tussle with local ace Sam Connor on the factory Beta, also expect good rides from Sherco man James Fry and TRS rider Ross Danby. Hookwood member Oliver Smith who won a round in 2021, together with Tom Minta will be cracking riders to watch.

The third tier route is the standard Expert class and past World Ladies Champion Emma Bristow must start as favourite especially after her two wins in 2021. Emma will no doubt be pushed by Hookwoods man Jonny Starmer, a previous winner of the Trial. Other locals

to watch will be: Tom McCabe, Hugh Barker, Kieran Tovey and 50/50 British Ladies Champion, another Hookwood rider, Sophie Bailey.

Harry Hemingway must start as the favourite in Trial 125 but will be pushed hard by Scorpa mounted Harry Turner. Harry won two world rounds in 2021.

Centre Trials Championship

The first round of the Southern Centre Trials Championship is being hosted by the Alton and District Club at Steep Marsh on Sunday 3rd April. Regs are printed in this edition. Note there is a change from the published date for the second round being hosted by Weymouth and Bridport.

This year there are nine standard rounds with three additional Classic events.

The number of events to count in the series for each competitor will be the total number of events in the series less two.

(A rider finishing in all 9 core rounds would have the worst two scores deducted) Rule TSR22A, "Stop Permitted", will be used at the nine core Centre Rounds.

Non-Stop, TSR22B rules may be applied at the three Pre65 and Twin-shock rounds, at the discretion of the organising Clubs.

Award winners and partners will be invited as complimentary guest of "The ACU Southern Centre" to an annual Awards Presentation in early 2023, to receive their awards.

Where Have all the Youngsters Gone

Waltham Chase Trials MCC have seen a decline in youth riders for the last few years, even before the pandemic put the brakes on most activity.

Is it the cost of or lack of availability of suitable bikes or possibly some of the events held are not suitable for the inexperienced younger rider?

In an effort to attract some new younger riders to the support Waltham Chase MCC will be holding an open Youth Promotion Trial at their Hut Hill venue, a location ideally suited for novice riders, on Saturday April 2nd. The format will include areas for complete beginners to practice, coaching and a competitive trial for

those ready for the challenge.

The Clerk of the Course and inspiration for this event is local rider Jim Gray. Jim and I have reflected on the days when a Southampton Vikings Friday evening John Patterson trial would attract an entry of thirty TY80 mounted riders, with the odd Fantic 80 making an appearance for good measure. But that was over twenty five years ago.

The event is open to all with a reduced entry fee of £5 via the ACU portal.

All local club members are very welcome to join us. Regs are opposite.

Protective Clothing - Clothing must cover legs and body and it is recommended that arms should be covered.

Boots of approximately knee length made of leather, rubber or plastic must be worn. The wearing of gloves is recommended. Motorcycle helmets Competitors, both riders and Sidecar passengers must wear a correctly fitted helmet at all times during the event whilst riding a motorcycle or quad. Officials must wear a correctly fitted helmet whilst riding a motorcycle at all times during the event, and it is recommended that they wear a helmet whilst riding a quad. Unless the helmet is manufactured with the camera as an intrinsic part, helmet cameras (including the helmet camera brackets) and cameras attached to the body are prohibited. Cameras attached to the machine are permitted. Jewellery Competitors are advised not to wear hand, face or body jewellery which could prove hazardous in the event of an accident.

The mouth should be kept clear of anything likely to cause a blockage of the airway in the event of an accident, e.g., chewing gum.

STRAIGHT TALKING The last ever NSA Southern Champion Jasper Joy on his rare Triumph Trident

NSA's new beginning.

In a not so surprising move at keeping British motorcycle sprinting alive the National Sprint Association has abolished the club's Southern and Northern sections to make it into a countrywide association. The move was voted in at the recent AGM held at Meridan, Solihull last month, writes Jerry Cookson.

Since the association's formation in 1958 the club has been allowed to operate 28

in sections organising quarter mile sprint events in the South West, Midlands as well as its traditional northern and southern areas since the very early sixties. Back then the NSA had unlimited use of some of the best British airfields to run its events. But with an all too steady decline in their usage this left the association with just a handful of venues to operate from, and sadly, many of which have been lost to housing developments or noise

issues.

NSA and Straightliners will be working together to ensure that "grass roots" sprinting and drag racing keeps a frim hold on its venues which are still available to them.

In the last three years Straightliners have developed what was once the old York Raceway into Britain's second permanent drag strip since the closure in 2018 of Warwickshire's Shakespeare County Raceway. Battling

against the pandemic Melbourne Raceway has seen a tremendous progression since the laying of the eighth mile drag strip in 2020. And with a healthy fan base up in the north the track has some big events planned for 2022.

Recently, foundations in the building of a new clubhouse have started, and are expected to be ready before the start of the season.

The NSA will be continuing to use Somerset's eighth mile sprint strip at Westonzoyland Airfield as well as events at Devon's Smeatharpe Airfield starting March 19th. Even the super smooth airstrip at Landbedr, mid Wales will echo to the sounds of real horsepower and performance rather than RAF training jets with a two day meet in May while three events have also been planned by Straightliners at the former RAF/British Army station at Dishforth Airfield, North Yorkshire in April, June and September.

The George Brown Memorial Sprint makes a welcome return to the calendar, but for the first time at Smeatharpe's Dakota Raceway as part of a big motorsport weekend on Sunday 14th August. Saturday has been reserved for a static grass roots car and bike motorsports show. The first

GBMS took place at Santa Pod Raceway in 1982 with further events held at Bradford's Esholt Park, Bovingdon and Blyton airfields, London's North Weald Drag Strip and Lincolnshire's Lancaster Raceway, East Kirkby

The NSA and Straightliners have now issued a complete championship calendar which is one of the most ambitious to date taking in events at Melbourne Raceway, Dishforth Airfield nr Thirsk, Santa Pod Raceway as well as the aforementioned 1/8th mile Sprint Strip of Westonzoyland and Smeatharpe's Dakota Raceway. It is expected that dates will be allocated shortly to the ACU Sprint

Vincent Trials Outfits

Q John Bramall I am having a clear out, and have come across a series of nice "professional" pics of a couple of Vincent Trials Sidecar Outfits, both 500cc (Comet) and 1,000 cc Rapide(s) on some sort of Exeter Trial type event.

Date is the second half of

the 1930's, not previously published so far as I am aware.

Weight of a Rapide in running order is a shade over 4cwt, with a substantial looking driver weighing say 14-15 stones, and a flyweight sidecar passenger the whole operation looks pretty precarious. I have distant memories of possessing

a Rapide for a while, a very unmanageable machine, and 4cwt was just too heavy, although I did manage 90 mph on mine on one occasion.

The pictures were taken at somewhere called Bluehills Mine, and other is Hustyn Hill, North Cornwall with large crowds in attendance.

GENERAL: Restriction on the number of Riders - Social distancing and keeping everyone safe is of paramount importance now the UK Government have lifted some of the restrictions on lockdown. As such, it may be necessary to limit the number of competitors to maintain social distancing measures not only in the paddock but also at Sections. Social Distancing Measures in line with UK Government Advice/Guidelines issued should be considered when parking vehicles to maintain a suitable space (suggest one vehicles width) space in between each vehicle to main safe distancing.

You must not enter this event if you have any symptoms related to the Covid-19 virus – including (but not limited to) a fever, a new persistent cough or a change in or loss of taste or smell. If you develop symptoms after entering please cancel your booking by email.

Method of Marking - The method of marking will be TSR22A – Stop Allowed Observers will use score sheets for marking.

Rider Numbers - Members of Waltham Chase MCC should enter using their Club Riding Number. All other riders will be issued with a riding number. All riders must provide their own rider number plate with a colour indicator showing the route they are riding.

Directions for Venue - The venue location, driving instructions and any additional joining information will be issued by email to all riders three days before the event.

Toilets - There are no toilet facilities at this Trial. Please consider before entering.

Travel to and from the venue would be dependent on current UK Government advice / guidance in place at the time, in terms of the number of persons in a vehicle and those persons being from the household / support bubble etc. If competitors / officials or someone in their household or support bubble are showing coronavirus symptoms, everyone in that household / support bubble should stay at home. If a competitor / official or a member of the household or support bubble are contacted as part of the test and trace program, the individual contacted should stay at home. If that individual becomes symptomatic, everyone in the support bubble must self-isolate and stay at home.

Grasstrack Banter Promotions Press Release Grasstrack is back at Owslebury near Winchester on Sunday 10th April 2022 with a star studded lineup, featuring the countries top riders against a number of stars from Europe.

Heading the UK contingent are multi-Masters winners James Shanes & Andrew Appleton, and from Europe Longtrack vice-champion Kenneth Hansen (Denmark) & Dave Meijerink (Holland) plus others to be confirmed. These form part of a 16 rider "Elite Solo Class" lineup.

Other classes also in this meeting include an 18 strong Right Hand Sidecar class with Mark Cossar/Gareth Williams heading the lineup.

These 2 classes will be supported by an Invitational 250cc Solo class, an Open 500cc Solo class & the Old & New Sidecars.

Maria held the Guinness World Record for five years as the fastest woman to lap the Isle of Man TT Maria has a wealth of experience of the Isle of Man course including podiums and lap records and has been racing at the TT for over 20 years.

She will not only be racing there this year on two and three wheels but will be a member of the new-look broadcast team presenting full and uninterrupted live coverage for the first time in its 115-year history.

She says, "For me, being able to go back and race there after two years off due to the pandemic already means the world but this time I'll be racing the Mark Coverdale Paton, my sidecar and holding a microphone. I couldn't be more excited and proud to have this new role and be part of this incredible line-up."

The TT organisers said: "Maria brings a nearunique perspective from competing on two and three wheels – as well as racing as the lone female in the solo classes. Maria was recently named an ambassador for 'Girls on Track UK', but she's been something of a flag-bearer for women in motorcycling for two decades now with her services to motorcycling deservedly recognised when awarded an MBE." Qualifying gets underway on Sunday May 29 with racing from Saturday June 4 onwards.

Positive Start to the Season at the Hawkstone International

It's been one of my best Hawkstone Internationals as I normally come here and struggle. In the races I went 12th and 11th and then 5th MX2 rider in the Superfinal.

Overall my riding was good today and these pre season races are all about getting back

into race mode and reducing the arm pump and tension after the off season and with each race today it was getting better. My fitness and pace is good but I'm just working on my aggression but overall I'm pleased with today and we still have time before the first round of the British.
