CYC Islander deadline:

We welcome members’ photos for the newsletter. Drop off copy and/or photos for the July issue to the CYC Islander mailbox in the Club office by June 10. You may also send copy to msmith@ cycrr.org.

Our ladies “got their garden on,” by donning festive hats and colorful spring attire for the Ladies Spring Social.

The club is officially open for the season following our annual Commissioning Ceremonies. Special thanks to Fleet Captain Slaght for honoring our members who have served our country by inviting them to be part of the color guard. It was a particularly powerful reminder of the sacrifice that our service men and women make for our nation.

At the Spring Membership Meeting on May 12, we shared a report from the Strategic Planning Committee detailing the work they have been doing over the past few years on a potential Clubhouse Improvement Project. Please take a moment to read the article in the Islander on page 5 that includes additional details. We plan to have a town hall meeting later this summer where we will share more details, so be sure to keep an eye out for that.

Coming up on June 10, Colleen and I can’t wait to honor and thank our Past Commodores for their service to the club at the annual Commodores’ Ball. This is another wonderful tradition we have at CYC, and I encourage you to attend. Make your reservation soon!

As we move into June, our docks are full, the porch is open, and Colleen and I couldn’t be more excited for the summer ahead. Our army of committee chairs and volunteers has been busy planning a summer season packed with activities. Thanks again for dedicating your time and talents to the club. Check out the calendar and the Islander for more details.

Our Waterfront Activities Director P/C Michael FitzGibbon has a variety of activities on the calendar this month, the Golf Fleet, cochaired by Brady Aldinger and

The Commodores’ Ball

P/C Gordon Geiger, kicks their season off and the Power Fleet, under the direction of Dr. John Pyke, will head off on their first cruises. One of our most treasured programs, Sail Camp, begins on the 13th under the direction of Dr. Laura Goldberg, and Dr. Emad Estemalik will be leading the Orcas toward another successful swimming season. Our Junior Race Team returns to the ILYA race circuit under the leadership of P/C Dan Clevenger and CYC will be hosting our very own ILYA Junior Regatta on the 24th. We can always use more volunteers so if you are interested, please contact Mike Harris. On the 17th the Fishing Fleet, cochaired by Dan O’Donnell and Chris van Raalten, will host our annual Walleye Tournament with bragging rights on the line for “Big Fish,” followed by Father’s Day on Sunday the 18th. It’s a great opportunity to spend the day on the island with dad.

As we have been preparing for the summer season, Marc and his team have worked tirelessly around the island to ensure we deliver the best possible member experience for everyone. Once again, thank you to our dedicated staff who work hard on our behalf every day.

As we look to July, don’t forget to mark your calendars for the biggest and best party of the year—Regatta! Sarah and Chris van Raalten and their team have been busy planning what I’m sure will be a fantastic regatta week. We can’t wait to see what they have in store for us.

Finally, as we move into our busiest season on the island, I’d like to request your patience and consideration of fellow members when entering and exiting the island. While I recognize that the new traffic patterns and traffic lights are an inconvenience, they are necessary to ensure everyone’s safety. We continue to work on the details of the bridge replacement and will share them as soon as they are available. Have a wonderful summer at the club, and Colleen and I look forward to seeing each of you on the island very soon.

A SPRING IN OUR STEP

Whether on an island in Florida or our very own island, this spring season was a boatload of fun

It was a cheerful May with the CYC Chorus concerts and the Ladies Spring Social, both a preview of all the fun that awaits members this summer on the island! The ladies adorned fabulous hats to complement their garden attire at the “Petals and Prosecco” Spring Social. And a group of ladies ventured to Florida for the Ladies Trip, which included a flag exchange with the Sarasota Yacht Club.

Women’s Network

More than 60 women attended the entertaining and educational Wine Tasting Event hosted by member Shannon McDonnell (Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits). Many thanks to Shannon for planning a truly flawless event.

We will take a break for the summer months and reconvene in the fall. The CYC Women’s Network meets several times a year in the evening for discussions, socializing and networking. There is no membership fee; all are welcome. Contact me at areich@frantzward.com with any ideas for future events.

Fine Art Fleet

So wonderful to finally wander around the island with boats in the water and with everyone getting ready for another wonderful summer on the lake!

Sophia Tjotjos, a long-time CYC member and boater as well as part of the CYC Art Fleet, will exhibit her last painting, titled “ Topaz Lake mermaid,” in the Library this month.

Sophia and her family have travelled extensively throughout the Great Lakes region on board Silent T’s, their beautiful yacht; they have often cruised to Baie Finn, in the Canadian North Channel, and hiked ashore to Topaz Lake and its crystal clear waters. Sophia remembers their daughter Yiana jumping into the lake on one of those trips, to then resurfacing with a joyful smile on her face! This wonderful memory led Sophia’s creativity into her latest painting. In spite of her lack of academic training in the Arts, Sophia, who has always loved painting, has been a long-time art student of Mrs. Cascarilla, also a CYC member and an esteemed Cleveland artist, thus allowing her to continue to grow and better herself in her artistic achievements!

The social circle Join in!

As chairperson of this year’s Entertainment Committee, I am always looking for members who would like to get involved in their club. Volunteering for an event committee and helping with planning of social events is a great way to meet some of your fellow members. We are especially in need of help with some of this year’s Regatta children’s events. Please email joseph.r.calabrese@gmail.com if you are interested in having a good time while volunteering.

Unveiling proposed club renovation

Doc-Side: Know your ABCDEs

We are excited to share the plan for one of the most exciting updates to CYC since the addition to our original clubhouse in 2003. This project is the output of more than seven year’s work by our Strategic Planning Committee. The Committee reports to the Board and its purpose is to identify and recommend mid- to longterm projects to maintain and improve CYC and our membership experience. This plan was developed jointly with the architects at Prospectus, an organization that has experience working with private clubs across the nation.

The picture you see here is an early rendering of the proposed renovation, which aligns with the results of the last membership survey and is designed to carry CYC another 30-plus years into the future. Major components of the project

include expanding both the upstairs and downstairs bar areas, providing more indoor and outdoor dining options, and, of course, maximizing our beautiful views of the river and lake. Additionally, the effort will provide a much-needed expansion of the downstairs kitchen, which has the same footprint as when built in 1964, while improving accessibility via a new elevator, and adding an employee breakroom and additional office space.

Later this summer the Strategic Planning Committee will hold a town hall meeting to provide full details of the plan and the project timeline, as well as an explanation of how it fits with the bridge replacement and other projects and how we will pay for the project.

CYC SAFETY TOWN 2023

Saturday, June 10 from 9-11 a.m.

FOR 3 TO 5 YEARS OF AGE

Bring your young ones down to learn island safety and rules with a program of fun and engaging activities catered to their age:

• Staying safe in sunny weather

• Pool rules and behavior

• The basics of being around boats

• Playground rules

• Moving about the island safely

• Wearing a life jacket properly and why they are important

• Problem solving and places for help.

Please bring: swimsuit, life jacket, sunscreen, shoes for walking. The activities will be topped off with an ice cream party. Register at cycrr.org

As we roll into the summer months, I want to remind you of the importance of wearing sunscreen. There are over 5 million cases of skin cancer diagnosed in the U.S. each year, making it the most common cancer diagnosis. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers.

You can lower your risk of melanoma by 50% by wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. There are different types of skin cancer with the most concerning and deadliest being melanoma. If you have numerous moles on your skin, it is advisable that you check them regularly or see a dermatologist to assess them for changes.

For melanoma specifically, a simple way to remember the warning signs is to remember the A-B-C-D-Es of melanoma:

Asymmetrical: Does the mole or spot have an irregular shape with two parts that look very different?

Border: Is the border irregular or jagged?

Color: Is the color uneven?

Diameter: Is the mole or spot larger than the size of a pea?

Evolving: Has the mole or spot changed during the past few weeks or months?

Talk to your doctor if you notice changes in your skin, such as a new growth, a sore that doesn’t heal, a change in an old growth or any of the A-B-C-D-Es of melanoma. And please wear your sunscreen every day!

CYC Charity Cup to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital— which has helped one of our own

Hi, my name is Fletcher Rollinson. I am 15 and a sophomore in high school, and grew up at CYC. I also happen to be a brain cancer survivor who was treated at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

How did I end up at St. Jude? In 2019, I began suffering migraine headaches and an MRI showed that I had a tumor in the pineal gland of my brain. My family and I flew to St. Jude to meet with Dr. Gajjar, a world-renowned pediatric neurooncologist. An initial surgery—an endoscopic biopsy performed by Dr. Boop, an amazing pediatric neurosurgeon— revealed that I had a rare brain tumor, a pineal parenchymal tumor of intermediate differentiation (PPTID), which required a second surgery by Dr. Boop, a posterior fossa craniotomy. Incredibly, Dr. Gajjar had only seen five patients with this type of tumor during his more than 30 years at St. Jude. After my two surgeries, I underwent six weeks of radiation followed by four months of chemotherapy during which I lived in housing, and even

attended school, at St. Jude.

Why am I telling you all this? I just wanted to let you to know what an incredible place St. Jude is, not only to me, but also to the thousands of other children who have been and continue to be treated there. St. Jude will forever hold a special place in my heart. I likely would not be here writing this article for the Islander if it were not for Dr. Gajjar, Dr. Aditi, Dr. Boop, and all of the other doctors, nurses and staff at St. Jude.

I understand that the money raised in this year’s Charity Cup at CYC in late July will be donated to St. Jude and I couldn’t be happier. So, when the time comes to get behind the Charity Cup, please keep me and the thousands of other St. Jude patients in your mind as well as in your heart.

Message from the General Manager

As the club gets ready for another season of boating, swimming and socializing, it is time to remind everyone of some policies to keep our island secure.

• Members must display their 2023 car sticker on their vehicle or show a valid membership card to Security.

• If you have invited guests that are not arriving with you, sign them in or call them direct at 440-799-4665 and provide your name, member number and guest names. Once you arrive, you will then need to sign the guest log.

• Vehicles displaying a Dockholder sticker (all navy) are the only ones allowed to park in the designated Dockholder Only parking spaces.

• Please remember the island speed limit is 10 mph. Make sure to review our Pool Guest Policy on page 9.

Connecting Online

In addition to our monthly newsletter, you can keep abreast of club happenings on our social media. To view photos of club happenings, follow us on Instagram at The Cleveland Yachting Club. And make sure to search and download The Cleveland Yachting Club App on your phone; then enter your current CYC website member name and password to access club events, membership roster, statements and more. You can make reservations and pay your bill right from your phone.

Island-wide WiFi

In an effort to simplify and make access to our island-wide WiFi easier, we’ve eliminated the need for usernames and passwords and have moved to a single network. The network name is “CYC WIFI” and the network password is CYC*1878#yacht. The password will be displayed at various points around the island—and will be changed on a periodic basis.

Take a Dining Survey

Please take time to complete our dining survey and let us know how we are doing. We will be holding a monthly drawing for those who complete the survey with a chance to win a $100 CYC gift certificate.

STAY SAFE THIS SUMMER: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ELECTRIC SHOCK DROWNING

Unknowingly, many swimmers and boat operators place themselves in the face of danger by swimming near electric-powered boats and docks. This innocent act of fun can turn tragic as electric shock drowning occurs each year.

Our Yard Crew will be doing routine testing of every dock pedestal and performing in-water testing around every dock this season. However, an electrical malfunction can happen at any time from someone’s boat.

Help prevent electric shock drowning or other electrical injuries with these tips:

1.) Do not allow anyone to swim near docks or boats.

2.) If you feel a tingle while swimming, the water may be electrified. Get out of the water as soon as possible avoiding the use of metal objects such as ladders.

3.) Never use electrical cords that are frayed or damaged or that have had the prongs removed or altered.

4.) Have Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) installed on your boat. Test them once a month.

5.) Consider having Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupters (ELCI) installed on boats to protect nearby swimmers from potential electricity leakage into water surrounding your boat.

6.) Have your boat’s electrical system inspected and upgraded by a certified marine electrician regularly.

AT THE POOL Swim Lessons

The pool also will host swim lessons. These lessons are scheduled directly between parents and instructors. Swim lesson prices are same as last year: $30 for 30 minutes. Parents pay the instructor directly and cannot bill to their account. Swim lessons are only scheduled from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. to avoid conflicts with swim team and pool cleaning. Contact poolmanager@cycrr.org to sign up.

Adult Coached Swim

We also are offering a program to focus on improving the swimming skills of our adult membership. Adult Coached Swim will be held in the mornings two days a week, and it will be an opportunity for members to come and workout.

Adult Coached Swim will be run like a swim team, with set workouts each practice. While some experience is required, those interested will communicate with me regarding their skill level and what they are interested in improving. Based on this feedback, I will construct a workout plan that suits both regular participants and welcomes new guests.

The Adult Coached Swim program will be held again this year with days and times to be determined.

The CYC Gate/Security Committee is looking forward to a fun and safe 2023 summer season! The bridge traffic restriction has our full attention, and we have been working closely with Management Committee and General Manager Marc Dallas to anticipate and plan for the challenges that this presents. We have also met with our contractor, Securitas, to keep them informed and to ensure that all guards are mindful of keeping traffic flowing while also enforcing all rules and regulations as published in the House Rules. We are asking all members and guests for their patience as we work through this together, and abide by the traffic signals.

In concert with Management Committee, Waterfront Activities Director P/C FitzGibbon and Marc Dallas, our plan is to anticipate and communicate busy weekends and events to our Membership. Running the shuttle for guests and employees will be utilized on an as-needed basis to control traffic flow and parking spaces.

We ask that all members review the House Rules regarding pets on the Island. This policy will be uniformly enforced, and we

appreciate in advance the cooperation of all pet owner members.

Also with the advent of Uber, Lyft, Door Dash and other vendors, our policy is to have delivery orders picked up at the Gate by those members ordering. These drivers will not be permitted access beyond the Gate. We thank our Members for complying with our request to have current windshield stickers and/ or membership cards available as they enter the Gate as is our policy. Our guards require proof of current membership to grant access.

Lastly, in respect of and concern for our neighbors along Yacht Club Drive we ask that you be aware of your speed due to increased pedestrian traffic and small children living in homes in the neighborhood. Please treat it as a “School Zone.”

We appreciate the opportunity to serve CYC through the Gate/Security Committee, and always welcome input and suggestions on how we can enhance the Member experience at our “Front Door.”

Then it’s off to Center Isle to cheer on the Cardboard Boat Races, followed by kids’ activities in the Spar Loft and grown-up fun at Topside.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 12

Yacht racing, like CYC, is steeped in tradition yet constantly innovating, and Wednesday honors both aspects of our club. Reconnect and reminisce or make new friends as we honor our longest-tenured members at the Member Appreciation Party in the clubhouse. Later, all members are invited to meet and mingle at the New Member Mixer. Come show them the ropes!

THURSDAY, JULY 13

Don your hat and pearls for a garden party on the tent lawn as the ladies give a (subtle) nod to the yacht racing traditions of Europe at the Royal Regatta Luncheon. “Special guest appearances” by some of your favorite Brits.

In the evening, be transported to Charleston, South Carolina, a hot stop on the yacht racing circuit, for delectable low country foods, wine pairings and champagne. Then, grab a seat as dueling pianos bring all your favorite songs and twice the fun with their riotous show.

And we haven’t forgotten our smaller yachties. Center Isle will be center-fun with a splash party, then crafts and movies. Teens and tweens will have their own dance party—friends welcome! Topside will be open for the parents, too.

FRIDAY, JULY 14

Annapolis, home to the US Naval Academy, is steeped in sailing tradition so come sail away across the Chesapeake Bay to the CYC Officers’ Club where we will rock the boat to the yacht-rock groove of Afternoon Delight. Be sure to get there early to try a lobster roll or a crab cake at the outdoor cafe. Dig out your sailor suit, your dress blues or your best East Coast prepster yacht wear and boogie down. Then race over to the clubhouse for latenight fun and games at the after-party.

SATURDAY, JULY 15

Start the day gently with a stroll around the island to review the boat decorations (there will be prizes!). As you get more wind in your sails, head to Center Isle for a burger bar lunch and a Jr. Regatta of kids’ pool games. The Flag Line even gets in on the fun. Relax and regroup at Topside because the race is still on!

We’ll go back in time to 1959, sail across the deep water in the Last Race to Havana and relive the glamour of old Cuba. Guayaberas, ruffled layers and dancing shoes encouraged. Come early to sample Cuban specialties and American favorites at the cafe. The rum will flow and cigar smoke will blow!

SUNDAY, JULY 16

Join together at the Sunrise Service featuring our CYC Chorus then enjoy your Flag Line’s hospitality as they serve breakfast at the clubhouse. Or, head out for the Kids’ Fishing Derby (Need a ride? Let us know!). The Kids’ Carnival at Center Isle will feature your old favorites plus a few surprises so don’t miss out!

Whether you’re captain, crew or along for the ride, please join the Squadron Sail, a great CYC tradition. It’s a chance for the Commodore to review the fleet, and for the fleet to salute our Commodore. Look for details coming in your regatta guide.

The last competition is the fiercest: the Rib Cook-Off. There’s a limited number of entrants so sign up soon! And we’re staying close to home and close to our hearts for the last regatta destination: Put-in-Bay. Enjoy an award winning rib dinner as Pat Shepard sings the (familyfriendly) songs we love to hear and we toast to another great regatta.

We’re looking forward to seeing you and your crew at every event.

Team Tackless wins Bowling Championship

The CYC Bowling Fleet league started in October, and bowlers met each Wednesday evening at Fairview Lanes, through April 12. Sixty-one CYC men making up eight teams would tell you “what a fun way to get through the dark yacht-less months of our year.” It was something to look forward to each week.

We always have room for expansion if you are interested to join the fun!

Congratulations to the champion bowlers:

The First Half Champions (John Oliver’s Team Oliver) went up against the Second Half Champions P/C Chuck Inglefield’s Team Tackless) in the year’s championship match. Congratulations to Team Tackless!

Navigating the Future: How AI is Revolutionizing Boating

Artificial intelligence has been capturing headlines with chatbots for a while now, but the future of AI is set to revolutionize the boating industry, making the experience more enjoyable and effortless than ever before. With the latest technology, boats will be able to adjust their course, speed and direction automatically, allowing boaters to sit back and enjoy the ride. Gone are the days of worrying about depth and proximity to things out of sight. With advanced sensors and machine learning algorithms, boats equipped with AI technology can immediately identify potential hazards, such as other vessels, debris or changes in weather conditions. The technology can also monitor the boat’s speed and adjust it as needed to maintain a safe distance from obstacles.

Skeet Fleet Report

Once again your Skeet Fleet was back in action this past season. Our sporadic activity partially falls on me, as I would like to find a younger shooter to take over the leadership of our fleet. However, our home field at the Beaver Creek Club in Amherst requires a club member be present when guests are there and only a couple other CYC members belong to Beaver Creek. This challenge is compounded as Beaver Creek has had a five- to 10-year waiting list for membership. And they have added membership leagues on the weekends, so we shall see what the future holds for our Skeet Fleet, but in the meantime, we continue on.

In December, we journeyed to the home of the Mentor Swamp Frogs. We had 10 shooters, which was the best turnout we have had in years. Unfortunately, our scores were not our best, but we always enjoy shooting with the Swamp Frogs. Our top five scores totaled 170 out of 250 birds; the Swamp Frogs, 224 out of 250. Yes, it was a slaughter, and the socalled captain of your Skeet Fleet, was not in the top five. Ouch!

In March, we had our annual breakfast gathering at the Hill-n-Dale Club in Medina. We had our typical 30 shooters, which is the max we can do. The squads are put together and handicaps are assigned, but seldom with much understanding. I always tell them I can be “bought,” but it has never happened. I keep hoping.

After we shoot a round of skeet and a round of 75 sporting clays, we gather back at the clubhouse to “review” the scores. This year heavy winds and rain were predicted, but we lucked out. Of our seven squads, only the last one was still shooting when the storm hit on the last of 14 stations. It was my squad but happily I do not shoot last. That unlucky guy still had three birds to shoot when mother nature came in really fast and let loose. The wind almost blew him off the station and the birds were flying crazy. We piled on the golf cart and fled but we were soaked by the time we made it to the clubhouse for our beverages. Yes, beverages rule! The top squad was led by Matt Thompson and had, with its handicap, a 382 out of 500 birds. The top two sporting clay shooters were Ben Thompson with a 58 and Sumner Mead with a 54, out of 75 birds. Congratulations guys for some good shooting on a windy day.
