Our docks are once again full and ready for the season!
From the Commodore
The club is officially open for our 147th season following our annual Commissioning Ceremonies. Thank you to Fleet Captain Dr. Laura Goldberg and Board Member Lee Stacey for organizing!
The month of May was glorious at CYC, bringing spring weather and the reopening of our club after completion of our new bridge. The addition of the pedestrian sidewalk is a huge improvement to safety, and by the look of this bridge, it will last many more years than I will. A huge thank you to Jason Smith and Marc Dallas, as well as the rest of the team that got that job done!
In May we held our annual Spring Membership Meeting. The Spring Meeting is a tradition that dates back to when the club closed for the winter months, so it was especially fitting this year after the shutdown for the construction, and we had a great turnout. I know I speak for the entire Board when I say thank you to the committee heads and the members who respectfully asked questions and provided constructive comments to the planning team, which is working hard to secure the future of CYC.
Vice Commodore Slaght and I thoroughly enjoyed bartending at the well-attended Ladies Spring Social. I personally served many mint juleps and got a taste of how challenging it can be to effectively serve a large group while working behind the small Pilot House bar, something that we look forward to remedying as part of the clubhouse renovation.
Looking forward, one of CYC’s most revered traditions is on the horizon. I’m speaking of the annual event that occurs every year on the second Saturday of June to honor our Past Commodores. You may have noticed back in January when we published this year’s events that we tweaked the name, now calling it the CYC Summer Gala Honoring our Past Commodores. This change arose out of a discussion at Topside (where many of the world’s problems have been solved) between myself and several P/Cs about how this important annual event wasn’t attracting our younger or newer members and instead gave the impression that the event was specifically for Past
Commodores, the Board of Trustees, etc. To address that misperception, we decided to change the name slightly, as well offer our Junior members a significant discount to attend the event based on their membership class! Chef Matt is planning a spectacular meal, we have a 10-piece band with a horns section that will be playing everything from modern dance music to classic rock to country, and there will be some fun, new twists this year. We hope to see many juniors and newer members there, along with some favorite P/Cs, on June 14 to support one of CYC’s oldest traditions.
Speaking of P/Cs, do you think that you can outrace one? On the evening of Thursday, June 12 come out for a fun sail with the P/Cs. Want to join in the fun but don’t own a sailboat? Please sign up online and we’ll find a boat for you to ride/crew on. No sailing experience is necessary.
If sailing isn’t your thing, the Fishing Fleet is holding the annual Battle of Lake Erie Calcutta on Friday, June 27 with fishing on Saturday, June 28. This is always a blast and I especially like the weigh-in at the Spar Loft on Saturday afternoon. Will a past winner take the title again, or will we crown a new champion?
Lastly, I want to provide an update on the Strategic Plan and the Gas Dock and Island Entrance projects. The preliminary designs have passed the initial City of Rocky River approval process and should get final approval by the city shortly. The Board of Trustees will be approving the final designs at the next meeting, which will allow our architect, with support from our Owner’s Representatives, to take the projects out for formal bidding so that the final designs, cost, etc., can be approved by the Board later this summer for October groundbreaking.
In parallel, Perspectus Architecture continues work on the clubhouse renovation engineering and other drawings to ready that project for formal bidding. Like the gas dock, several construction firms have already presented bids, but this round will end with formal contracts ready for Board review.
Next time you hear from me it will be almost time for Regatta. The summer will go fast, enjoy every minute and see you at the club!
—Commodore Christian Tracey
And we’re off! Day at the Races makes for a splendid time
Putting the WOW in springtime happenings
We all had a fantastic night together at the Ladies Spring Social—A Day at the Races. As you can see from the photos left, the decorations were fantastic, the food was fabulous and the ladies were lovely.
We were reminded that the primary focus of WOW is friendship but also the fact that WOW women like to do things.
With the warm weather and the club opening we are looking forward to outdoor activities.
SAILING begins on Monday, June 2 at 6 p.m. and Wednesday, June 4 at 10 a.m.
KAYAKING also begins on Thursday, June 5.
WALKING will continue Fridays at 10 a.m. Please see our newsletter for more information.
Also starting in June we will resume our monthly POTLUCKS. Our first one is June 25 with music by Michael Lovett. You won’t want to miss that.

Claire Bossert Patterson has a rather unique style, which allows her to create very colorful and vibrant paintings, often inspired by prior trips somewhere...her piece now on exhibit in the Library was inspired by one of her photographs taken on a trip to Italy years ago, I suppose during her college days. What she saw in Portofino has now become a modern, somewhat abstract painting, the perfect subject to welcome summer and boating to CYC!
To all, our best wishes for enjoyable, safe summer months on the water and around our Island!
—Marcello Mellino, CYC Fine Art Fleet Chair

With the Memorial Day Weekend behind us, summer is finally back at CYC!
The membership excitement has been growing since early May, when the bridge finally reopened to allow us back on the Island. As usual, the Memorial Day Weekend was filled with enjoyment and tradition, which are both important ingredients of our CYC experiences.
The artists involved with the Fine Art Fleet welcome all members to stop by the Library where, on a monthly basis, one of us exhibits one of our creations.

Skeet Fleet Report
I have to admit this is not an original Skeet Fleet Report. When I reviewed my report from last November, I realized very little has changed since then. Therefore, to refresh your memory, here it is, again.
Your Skeet Fleet continues to shoot, but not as nearly as often as we used to. The reasons are several, but the prime ones are these. The so-called leader of the Skeet Fleet is not getting old. He is old. Additionally, we now do our practicing on Saturday mornings at the Beaver Creek Club in Amherst instead of Sundays. This is due to the club establishing its own Skeet League and they use Sunday mornings. Therefore, we have to compete with other club activities on Saturday mornings. But your Skeet Fleet will survive and practice when we can fit it in.
Every December we continue to journey east and continue our long-time competition with the swamp frogs of Mentor Harbor. It is a shame they are such good shooters, but we do our best. Plus, we understand if we practiced a lot more we could be better shooters. Helluva note these standards.
Our other annual event is the breakfast sporting clays gathering at the Hill-nDale Club in Medina. It always starts with a great breakfast in their dining room. Following that we form squads, with handicaps assigned by yours truly, for our 76-bird match. Yes there are some groans

when the handicaps are announced. We recently had our 76-sporting clays shoot. We had about 25 shooters show up and this is a good number. Our top shooters were Mike Gaydos (62), Greg Tlappa (56), Matt Thompson (55), Ben Thompson (53), P/C Allyn Adams (52) Bradly Kmetz (49), John Wilson (46), Grant Geary (43) and Mike O’Shea (41). The balance of us were below 40, but overall, it was a good shoot gathering.
If you have an interest in joining your Skeet Fleet, please let Dave Freeman or me know. If you do not currently own a shotgun, do not buy one until after you have shot a few times and know you want to continue doing so. Until then you can use one of ours.
As always, this report is respectively submitted.

Doc-Side: Summer Safety
Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but it also comes with its own set of health hazards. Here are the biggest risks and tips on how to avoid them so you can enjoy the season safely:
Dehydration—Staying hydrated is crucial, especially in high heat. Aim for 64 ounces of water a day and monitor the color of your urine to ensure you’re hydrated.
Sunburns—They are caused by UV ray exposure and can lead to premature skin aging, skin cancer, and severe shortterm effects like dehydration and sun poisoning. Use a chemical or mineral sunscreen containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide daily, even on overcast days, and be thorough in application.
Heat Illnesses—Heat illnesses range from heat rash and heat cramps to heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
Bee Stings and Insect Bites—Summertime brings an increase in bee stings, mosquito bites, tick bites and ant bites. Use insect repellent with DEET or picaridin and take additional precautions like avoiding scented products, draining standing water, wearing protective clothing and covering food outdoors.
Drowning—Water safety is crucial, especially for children. Learn CPR, use drain covers, wear life jackets and sign up for swimming lessons.
Unsafe Summer Foods—Cookout foods can pose risks due to harmful substances created during smoking and improper storage. Marinate meats with liquid smoke and ensure they are cooked to a safe temperature.
Kidney Stones—Kidney stones are more common in the summer due to increased temperatures and dehydration. Stay hydrated, reduce salt intake, and increase fruit and vegetable consumption.
Gardening-Related Injuries—Gardening can lead to injuries and discomfort. Use proper form, ergonomic tools and avoid contact with poison ivy to prevent issues.
Shoe Woes and Foot Pain—Summer footwear like flip-flops and sandals can cause foot pain and injuries. Wear supportive shoes to prevent falls and blisters.

Tech-Side: Stay connected dockside
June is here, bringing with it sunny days perfect for extended stays dockside and onboard. Reliable connectivity becomes crucial, whether you’re working remotely, streaming entertainment or checking weather updates. Here’s how to enhance your connectivity for smooth, enjoyable marina life.
Boost Your Wi-Fi Signal
If marina Wi-Fi feels slow or spotty, consider adding a marine-grade WiFi extender or booster. Devices like Shakespeare’s WebWatch or Wave Wi-Fi solutions are specifically designed to improve signal strength and range in marina environments.
Cellular Connectivity Options
When marina Wi-Fi isn’t sufficient, a dedicated cellular hotspot or booster can greatly enhance your onboard internet. Carriers such as Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile offer reliable solutions that improve connectivity significantly on Lake Erie’s shoreline.
Satellite Internet for Remote Cruising Planning to cruise further offshore
or remote anchorages this summer? Consider a marine satellite internet system like Starlink Maritime or Iridium GO! While more expensive, these solutions provide connectivity virtually anywhere, giving peace of mind on longer voyages.
Practical Connectivity Tips:
• Check Coverage Maps: Ensure your chosen provider has strong coverage around Lake Erie.
• Keep Devices Secure: Use strong passwords and encrypted connections to protect sensitive information.
• Manage Data Use: Monitor data consumption, especially if streaming video or running multiple devices, to avoid unexpected charges.
With the right connectivity setup, you can seamlessly blend work, leisure and safety this boating season. Whether you’re dockside or exploring Lake Erie’s waters, stay confidently connected.
Warm regards and smooth streaming, —Justin Reed on behalf of the CYC Tech Committee

Welcome from the Gate
With the completion of the bridge project, we once again enjoy two-way traffic, and now have a sidewalk on the south side to assure pedestrian safety. Here are a couple reminders to help ensure a smooth season at our club.
• Pet owners, please be familiar with House Rules regarding pets on the Island.
• When using services such as Uber, Lyft and Door Dash, remember that delivery orders/passengers are to be picked up at the Gate by members using these services.
• Please remove old windshield stickers, and use only the most recent stickers and membership cards. Our security personnel require proof of current membership for club access.
• Guests must be signed in.

Sail Camp = fun + friends + boats
CYC’s nonstop, seriously fun Sail Camp kicks off on Tuesday, June 10. Geared to campers ages 8-19, this 6-week program is offered in 2 sessions: June 10-27 and June 30-July 18.
“Our mission is to instill a life-long respect, passion and love for boating,” says P/C Mike FitzGibbon. “Sail Camp is the cornerstone of a youth development program that introduces a variety of waterspots, with an emphasis on sailing, resulting in competent and confident boaters.”
There are program options within the camp for children and grandchildren of members who are 5-19. For instance, our youngest sailors start out in the Opti pram through the S.O.S. (Start Opti Sailing Now) program. Full day camp starts for 8-year-olds through high schoolers and covers beginner to advanced sailing skills. Everyone learns about power boating safety, water safety, paddle boarding and kayaking. The experienced instructors make sure fun and safety are both the focus of every day.
“A typical camp day includes half a day of sailing and rotating water activities,” he says.
Of course, all great things must come to an end. Look for awards and glory at the end of the camp at Sail Camp Trophy Night, set for Tuesday, July 22.
In addition to Sail Camp, Junior Race Team, under the leadership of P/C Dan Clevenger, is for campers who wish to train and compete regionally. Races take place on Optimists, Lasers, 420s and Thistles, with optional racing opportunities on the weekends.
The team travels throughout the summer to nearby clubs for the ILYA Travelers Series. This allows our advanced campers to take sailing to the next level and in the past has created a close-knit group of lifelong friends.
