CYC Islander deadline:

We welcome members’ photos for the newsletter. Drop off copy and/or photos for the June issue to the CYC Islander mailbox in the Club office by May 10. You may also send copy to msmith@ cycrr.org.

On the Cover:

As the new bridge opens, the clubhouse is the place to be this month.

From the Commodore

Welcome to May, which for Maureen and me, is one of our favorite times of the year as we look forward to another summer at CYC boating, swimming and enjoying everything that our club offers—which is especially exciting as we reopen the club and get the summer started after two months away from the island.

I want to start by offering a huge thank you to our entire staff as they work their behinds off to reopen our club after two months. Chef Gambatese and his team have been hard at work on new menus, Brian and the yard crew are readying docks and the grounds, Joe, Jeremy and Ethan are getting new staff up to speed, Diane and our back office crew are keeping the lights on, and Marc is steering the ship.

I write this from the Bahama Beach Club on Treasure Cay in the beautiful Abacos Islands where we’ve gathered members and their guests for the annual Commodore’s Cruise. There are 50 of us here (see photo below) enjoying the sun, sand, sea life and ice cold Kaliks! If you haven’t taken a Commodore’s Cruise in the past, I highly recommend it. It’s a great tradition and a unique way to get to know your fellow members off island and to create lasting memories together.

Also, thank you to all our committee members who have been hard at work— P/C Allyn Adams and his team on the Dock Committee, and John Opdyke and the Membership Committee—and to our volunteers, who are hard at work on Regatta 2025 and a variety of other events to make sure your family has a memorable and fun-filled summer!

If you haven’t been following the bridge progress, it was an impressive project and we hope that you can join us on Sunday, May 25 at 3 p.m. on the North Lawn for the official ribbon cutting of our new bridge. Check out the progress photos on page 3 and on our website.

Speaking of traditions, this month sees us taking part in a variety of beloved CYC traditions, including our Mother’s Day Brunch, Power Fleet Kick-Off, Porch Opening, and—last but certainly not least—Memorial Day weekend, complete with our traditional Boat Hop, Antique Car Show, member Art Show, and the CYC Commissioning Ceremony. The Commissioning is a time-honored ceremony that marks the official start of our club’s boating season. Rooted in naval customs, the event is both a celebration and a formal recognition of the responsibilities and leadership within our club. It is a day that blends tradition, pride and the spirit of camaraderie among those who share a passion for the water. Memorial Day weekend is truly one of the most special weekends at the club and we hope you’ll join us as we kick off another wonderful CYC summer.

Spring launch is here!

Summer will be here soon, and with it the CYC will reopen...finally!

As the bridge will again reconnect us with our beloved little island, boaters will get busy getting ready for launch, the pool will soon be available for children of all ages and some wonderful meals will be enticing us all on the terrace.

Linda Gross Brown, a long-standing CYC member and prolific artist, will be exhibiting one of her works in the Library this month, and I encourage all to stop by and look at her work. Linda is well known throughout

the U.S. and abroad, and we are very fortunate to have her as part of the Art Fleet!

As the long Memorial Day weekend approaches and the traditional start of the summer boating activities at the CYC, I wish to remind our members to please stop by Center Isle on Saturday, May 24 to visit with your fellow members-artists of the Art Fleet, as they proudly show their new works during the annual Art Show, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

To all, best wishes for a safe and pleasant Summer!

The inspections are voluntary and there is no penalty if your boat does not pass the inspection. For those who pass, you will receive a decal to be displayed on your boat, for the 2025 season. The inspection usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. Just look for a Vessel Safety Examiner, walking the Island, identifiable by their red shirt.

We will have a complimentary BBQ luncheon for all Power Fleet members from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, beer, soft drinks, and all the fixings. The BBQ will be held at Center Isle—outside, weather permitting. Geneva-on-the Lake Cruise

June 6, 7 & 8

Back by popular demand, Skippers Whit and Arlene Slaght have a fun-filled weekend planned for our 2025 maiden cruise to Geneva-on-the-Lake.

• Friday, June 6 — Arrive at your leisure. Enjoy the afternoon in town or at one of the many activities around the marina or lodge.

From 4 to 6 p.m., Whit and Arlene will host a complimentary tasting event for you to sample various Lake County wines, grape juices and accoutrements. Afterward, enjoy dinner at one of the many casual or stepup dining venues at the Geneva-on-theLake downtown Strip. Several suggestions include Firehouse Winery, Lake House, Eddie’s Grill or the State Lodge located next to the marina.

For those wishing to participate in an upscale dining experience, we have reservations (limited to 14 attendees) at the breathtaking Vincent William Winery in Madison. After dinner, enjoy a final glass of wine while watching the sunset from the winery’s estate overlooking Lake Erie. Check it out at vinventwilliamwine.com. Shuttle bus transportation will depart the marina, to the winery, at 6:30 p.m., and return just after sunset.

• Saturday, June 7 — Again, enjoy a day of leisure downtown or at one of the nearby venues as there is something to do for everyone. Consider zipline and go carts at the Adventure Park, guided zipline tour at Lake Erie Canopy Tours (located at the Lodge), 18-hole golfing at the Geneva-onthe-Lake Municipal golf course (440466-8797), mini golf, or the many game arcades or outdoor stages on the Strip. For lunch, enjoy fries and a foot long at Eddie’s Grille, Madsen Donuts, Kate’s Ice cream, grab a picnic table at Firehouse Winery to enjoy a pizza, music and wine, or have a picnic at the Geneva State Park Public Beach.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m., and continuing to 9:30 p.m., we will have a bus trip to several wineries for you to enjoy local wines, cheeses and other food options, along with the beautiful vineyards. Transportation shuttle provided by the Power Fleet; wine and food cost paid by participants. On our return to the marina, we will make a stop downtown for those who wish to depart for an evening stroll, people watching and, of course, motorcycles. Children are welcome to accompany their parents to the wineries.

• Sunday June 8 — Donuts, coffee and OJ will be provided dockside. Please plan to depart by noon.

The Geneva-on-the-Lake Strip, along with many of the other local activities, is located within a 15-minute walk of the marina. Golf carts are also available throughout town, and at the Lodge.

Doc-Side: Building Muscle

Building muscle is important, as it improves bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures, helps with weight management, and helps with balance and flexibility, which reduces the risk of falls. Regular exercise also improves cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure and improves circulation and can improve mood.

Building muscle safely and effectively involves a combination of exercise, nutrition and lifestyle adjustments. Here are some proven methods to help you achieve your muscle-building goals.

Choose Your Weight and Number of Repetitions: Fatigue your muscles by the end of the exercise and feel challenged throughout. Athletic trainers often recommend three sets of an exercise with eight to 12 repetitions, increasing the weight by 5 pounds for the upper body and 10 pounds for the lower body as the exercises get easier.

Temper Your Expectations: Building muscle takes time, and it’s important not to overload too much weight too quickly.

Expect Some Soreness: Early on, you may experience lingering soreness due to natural microtears in your muscles—a sign of muscle breakdown and rebuilding. However, if you experience strong or persistent pain, correct your form or see a healthcare provider.

Structure Your Routines: Avoid overusing the same muscles by shaking up your routine. It is recommended that you complete upper body exercises twice a week and lower body exercises twice a week, with a day of rest in between focus areas.

Rest and Recover: Rest for one or two days a week, and consider active recovery routines like swimming, cycling or walking. Include a 10-minute warmup and cooldown at the start and end of your exercises, and rest for a minute or two between each set.

Also pay attention to nutrition and lifestyle. Time your meals by eating before and after exercising to prevent your body from pulling energy from your muscles. Try easily digestible foods like yogurt, fruit, or sports drinks packed with electrolytes. Also make sure to eat enough protein and use supplement protein powders sparingly. And don’t forget about carbohydrates and healthy fats. Balance carbohydrates, healthy fats and proteins in your diet. Carbs provide quick energy for weightlifting, while healthy fats offer longer-lasting fuel for lower intensity exercises.

Tech-Side: Weather Apps, Tools for Safe Sailing

With warmer weather finally here, we’re all excited to get out on Lake Erie. Reliable weather information is key to safe and enjoyable boating. This month, let’s explore some of the best digital tools to keep you ahead of Mother Nature.

Top Marine Weather Apps:

• NOAA Marine Weather—Provides accurate marine forecasts, wave heights, wind speeds and severe weather alerts directly from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

• Windy—Highly detailed wind forecasts, radar overlays and real-time storm tracking perfect for sailing and racing.

• Buoycast: Real-time data from nearby weather buoys, essential for precise local conditions on Lake Erie.

How to Use Weather Apps Effectively:

• Set Custom Alerts. Configure your chosen app to notify you immediately of severe weather warnings, unexpected wind shifts or storm developments.

• Pre-Departure Checks. Always check updated forecasts shortly before setting sail. Weather can change rapidly on the lake.

• On-Water Updates. Periodically refresh weather data when out on the water, especially if you plan to stay out for several hours or overnight.

Complementing Tech with Common Sense:

No app replaces careful observation and good judgment. Always monitor skies and water conditions visually. Keep a reliable VHF radio onboard for official marine weather broadcasts and emergency communication.

With these robust tools and mindful practices, you can confidently enjoy every moment of boating season, knowing you’re prepared to make quick decisions when weather changes.

Here’s to sunny days, steady breezes and safe sailing!

Off Island Shenanigans

From the bar crawl to Edgewater YC and Shoreby Club, to Pathfinders hikes, to members in New York for fun on the slopes, our members stayed active during club shutdown

From the General Manager

As we begin each new season the main objective is clear: delivering the best possible experience to the members, their families and their guests.

To achieve this objective, it all starts with our staff. The staff is the club’s No. 1 asset and without a talented and dedicated team of professionals, the club experience simply will not meet our membership expectations.

Promoting a positive, high-energy work environment while providing the team with the tools, mentorship and support is key. Each new season is an opportunity to implement new employee training, make improvements to the employee onboarding process and educate our team on the latest and greatest private club best practices and industry trends.

This year, in addition to our new F&B training program we have teamed up with Strategic Club Solutions. The company is recognized in the private club industry for delivering innovative, results-driven food and beverage training, which will be conducted on May 22 as an all-day workshop.

I look forward to welcoming all our members back to the club this month. Here are just a few friendly reminders to keep our island secure:

• Members must display their 2025 car sticker on their vehicle or show a valid membership card to Security. (Watch for e-mail blast when these are available for pickup.)

• The island speed limit is 10 mph.

• If you have invited guests, please call or sign them into Security prior to their arrival. The direct phone number is (440) 799-4665.

• Please remember that men’s hats/ caps are unacceptable anywhere in the clubhouse.

• Smoking or vaping is strictly prohibited within any building, including Topside and the Pool Deck.

If you have guests, please inform them of our club policies in advance to avoid any potential embarrassing situation. Thank you for your kind understanding. — Marc Dallas, General Manager
