Hey Sunnies! Welcome to the fourth issue of The Savvy Sun
I hope your first month of school has been well so far and you’re getting used to the workload of your classes. Remember that Key Club provides a lot of fun events for you and your friends to relax after stressful school hours :)
In this issue of our newsletter, you would be able to check out our members' and officers’ experiences from August and September events including food banks, DCMs, and our home club’s service events. Also, don’t forget to celebrate our members and officers of the month on the Recognition pages. And get to know more about our Secretary and Treasurer in “Deeper with Board”.
There’re a lot of interesting things in this issue so don’t forget to check it out!
Welcome back to another issue of The Savvy Suns! It's been a minute, as this Edition is covering two months, but I'm glad to see you all again . School’s started again, and I hope that you guys are staying on top of your work. AP English Lit is killing me , but in general I am enjoying school, especially AP Gov.
As far as Key Club goes, these past few months have been honestly the best so far . Savanna's registration volunteering was one of our most successful service events, and it made a big impact on our school! Furthermore, seeing so many of you at our first few meetings was a bit surreal , but I obviously enjoyed seeing all of you there. I also love how the Kiwanis card drive went, and the Kiwanis of Greater Anaheim really appreciated the cards that you guys made . The best recent event, however, in my opinion, was easily September DCM . The color powder war was super fun, Savanna sold out of its boba very quickly, and receiving Club of the month, again, was a very pleasant surprise.
I feel like a broken record, as I say this in every newsletter, but it blows my mind how fast the club is growing and how well it's doing, and I truly appreciate you, our members, are helping us grow at such a fast rate . We are not slowing down anytime soon, so stay on the lookout for more events coming very soon <3
See you next time Key-uties!!!

Savanna President, 22-23
Hi! My name is Kevin Tran, and on August 6, 2022, I was a volunteer that helped at the food bank at Savanna High School! I have never helped volunteer for a food bank before, but the coordinators made it easy to understand what tasks I had to do. I was assigned to set up food with my partner, Giang Ong, for the volunteers to put into the cars. There was one large pile of food, and we had to prepare smaller stacks that consisted of one bread and one sweet for the volunteer to bring to the cars. We kept stacking these bread and sweets. Every time the food was given away and the original stack got smaller, I felt more and more satisfied! The Key Club members from other schools that helped volunteer were all kind and easy to talk to. I made multiple friends from other schools because everyone there was bright and ready to socialize with others. After giving away all the food, we had to help clean up the area, which went pretty quickly because everybody lent a helping hand. When the entire event finished, I exchanged contact information with the people that I became friends with during this food bank. I not only had a great time volunteering at this food bank, but I also created potential lifelong friends! Overall, the adults and students were happy people, which made the entire atmosphere of the volunteering event so much more lively!
This is the 3rd DCM that I have attended and the whole event was very enjoyable. I was surprised by how many Savanna students showed up. I was able to see people I am close with and was able to converse with them. I think this was the first time I have seen students from Division 30 North. They’re purple and have rhinos as a mascot. After checking in, the people who checked in the students, gave us a number on our hand. I was able to sense that we were going to be separated into groups. Not surprising but a good tactic. The numbers were 1, 2, and 3. That meant there were going to be 3 different stations and 3 big groups of people. Each group is going to rotate into different stations so they could each do a project there. I first started off with the dog toy station. It was easy to knot and braid the shirts together because I have done this before and it was fun to braid. Then after a chant was yelled, we rotated and went to the card making station. It was card making for the elders, they shall live a good life. We took many pictures during the break and the school representatives were selling snacks and some drinks. I bought the strawberry slushie, it was good and cold. The last station I was assigned to was the peanut butter and jelly sandwich making station. They ran out of gloves and bread to make more….. I guess the other participants had lots of fun as I heard someone yelling, “Don’t make a lot! Other groups need to make them too!”. It was really fun and I want to attend more DCMs in the future.
Club Rush is an amazing promotional tool for all the clubs at Savanna. There are different tactics used with every Club, from giving away candy, to creating promotional videos, you really can't go wrong. I really wanted Club Rush to go well because the club has already been doing well recently and if CLub Rush went well too, our membership had potential to skyrocket. The tri-fold we made looked very good; it showed some of our previous events, explained our 4 core values, and it even had a map of where all the clubs in our region are. We also made a picture frame so that we can take pictures of people who signed up and post them on Instagram. To make it look all cute, we added some of the CNH bees on the sides and all of the seven mascots in Region 3 at the bottom. Everything was going pretty well leading up to the event, and that translated into the event. It was cool to see some general members helping us at Club Rush because it showed their commitment and dedication to the club. I was also ecstatic to see many Savanna students, especially underclassmen, show care about the organization. Overall, we had around 80 people sign up. Considering the size of our club and our school, that's a really good number to hit. I also really enjoy taking pictures with the picture frame because they all came out really cute, and they were great promotional material for Instagram. As president, I can confidently say that Club Rush went well.
On Saturday, September 3rd, I woke up at 7 in the morning to prepare for a meaningful day with my favorite service event of Key Club, Food Bank. After putting on sunscreen and refilling my water bottle, I was ready to serve my community. It was only the second time I volunteer for the food distribution but I already felt connected and enjoyed the event, despite the 90-degree or higher weather I was working with people I already know from Savanna so the experience was really fun and relaxing. We were helping with the produce station where we distributed a small box of produce with a watermelon for every ticket that families had. It was funny when one of us pointed out the difference in the size of watermelons. Some of them were bigger than my head while one of them was as small as my fist But I really appreciate the effort and dedication of people from the Saddleback Church in helping families with the necessities they needed. The event ended early because we distributed the food to all people there. But there was still a lot of food and produce left. Thus, some volunteers were able to bring some goods home as an appreciation of their service on a hot summer day :)
Although the weather was boiling, especially when I was wearing a long sleeve, and the three hours shift was a little exhausting, I think it was worth it as I witnessed the happiness of people that came and received so many blessings from them. Food Bank will always be my favorite service event!
Savanna and Cypress Key Club had a collaborative park cleanup on Saturday, September 17 at Twila Reid Park. The weather continued to switch from extremely sunny to cloudy throughout the event, but it luckily did not affect the overall success of the cleanup. In the beginning, everyone was given gloves and trash bags and told the basic “do’s and don’ts” of the event. We basically had to stay with at least one other person to ensure our safety. At first, most people stayed in a general area of the park but continued to spread and roam around throughout the time we were there. A good majority of the trash was small pieces of plastic, which is unfortunately not surprising. Some people just don’t think twice when they accidentally or even purposely drop small pieces of trash. There were some interesting finds like a metal fork and foam toy bullets. The event was not only rewarding in the sense of receiving community service hours for school but also feeling accomplished seeing the park so clean. Being outside and giving back to the community by keeping it clean was very fulfilling. In the end, our bags of trash were collected to be thrown away. Overall, I would say that this service event was a success, and I can’t wait to have more park cleanups in the future!
Kiwanis really is an organization that deserves a lot of respect. They obviously sponsor our club, allowing it to exist in the first place, but their overall mission as an organization is very commendable to me. They are simply trying to make a positive impact in all the communities they can reach, and they're simply trying to make children's lives better. As an appreciation, I wanted to host an event where our members can thank such a great organization. During September, mainly for the CNH Serve-tember initiative, we had a Key Club 101 series running on Instagram, and for our post dedicated to teaching our members who Kiwanis is, we attached a service project where members could create cards thanking our Kiwanis for service hours. We had decent participation in this event, with 22 cards being made in total. Once the card drive was done, I and my friend Joelle went to the weekly Kiwanis meeting to catch up with our sponsoring Kiwanis chapter, and also to give them our cards to show them appreciation. I got to meet Savanna's new Kiwanis advisor, and he was very pleased with the fact that we did this act of appreciation for them. All the other Kiwanians were also happy to see our club's efforts. Overall, the Kiwanis card drive was a success and I was very happy to see that our Kiwanis chapter appreciated this kind gesture.
Rainbow Rumble was my very first DCM ever. Since I am a freshman it was something new for me and I could say it was one of the most fun experiences I've had so far this year. When I first arrived at the event it was a bit awkward because I didn’t know anybody except for the people who went to Savanna and a few friends from other schools who I met up with. People were in line to sign up, food was being sold, and everyone was just talking to their friends. After everyone got settled in we had our division council meeting. I didn’t know how it worked and couldn’t hear anyone, but all I know is that Savanna won 1st shining club of the month. LET'S GO REBELS AND SUNS!! Once that was all done we finally got the powder and we had to make a big giant circle with the dragons and otters. I and my friends ended up talking to the girls right next to us who are from Rancho Alamitos High School. They were some of the sweetest people ever and I definitely hope I get to see them one more time this year since they are seniors. For most of the event, we stuck with them and got to know each other a little more. We played a few games, took pictures, and threw powder everywhere. Towards the end, while taking the big group photos with the other divisions, I met someone else who goes to Santiago High School. Me, my friends, and he all got along pretty well. He is also a senior so I hope I get to see him once more this year. The event was coming to an end, I made sure I got all the amazing people’s Instagrams I had met and said goodbye to each other. I’m glad I decided to go to September’s DCM because if I didn’t I knew I would regret it. Never miss out on any experience, you could meet new people, learn new things, and have fun. I love Key Club.
