Hello my lovely Sunnies <3 I’m happy to see you again in the 6th issue of the Savvy Sun! Hope that the Thanksgiving break helped you relax after working so hard in the first months of school. Also, I hope that you would finish off your semester strongly in the final weeks!!
November was a busy month for Savanna Key Club as our members were actively involved in different events from D30S, Savanna, and other clubs! Check out some recaps of these events if you’re interested in participating but don’t know what it looks like. And don’t forget to visit our Deeper with Board pages to know more about our new historians! Lastly, as usual, remember to note the December calendar for future events ^^ Hope to see you in the next issue.
What's Poppin Sunny's?! Good to see y'all again in another edition of our newsletter! I hope all of your Thanksgiving Breaks went well, and you were able to relax. I have a lot of fun catching up with friends and getting food, and so despite AP Lit and college apps nagging me the entire break, it was very much relaxing and will help me finish off the semester. November has just ended, meaning FALL RALLY SOUTH has come and gone . This event was crazy to say the least. Despite the insane amount of work it took to organize this event, it was 100% worth it; Fall Rally South was truly an amazing day, one filled with physical and emotional rollercoasters. Despite the fact that we didn't win the spirit stick, I'm happy that we all at least showed up and had fun, and I am happy to reflect on what was such a grand event. On a final note, guys please take care of yourselves this month ; with school stressing us all out and sickness spreading, I want to remind you all to take care of yourselves, physically and mentally . This may seem random, but I want to make sure you guys are doing well as this club wouldn't exist without you all. With that being said, I hope you enjoy the rest of this amazing newsletter and I'll see you guys next time. Bye sunnies!
Class of 2023
Savanna President, 22-23
On October 13, I went to a community service social called the Evil Banana Bash. This event comprised the school's Savanna, Western, John F Kennedy, Cypress, and Oxford. The theme of this event was the Minions, which I loved because one of my favorite movies is the Minions movie and Despicable Me. We started the event with a few icebreakers to get to know people in the same school as myself and people in other schools. An icebreaker that stood out to me involved writing facts about ourselves that no one else knew. This activity was hilarious. I got to learn some funny facts about one another. After the icebreakers, we started making Minion-themed bookmarks. It was very fun to look at all the different Minions people created with only paper, scissors, and some markers. It reminded me of activities I did in elementary. While this was happening, Someone came by and had an alive chicken called Ken, short for Kentucky fried chicken. Someone also brought a purple minion-themed frame. We took many pictures with the frame. Overall I had a really fun time. Being able to meet people from different schools and around our community was an astonishing opportunity.
November food bank was my first ever one ever and to be honest I didn’t really know what I was doing. Everyone was put into different food categories to help pass out food but you had to be over 17 to actually put it into the cars. For someone who is 5’0 with barely any muscles, the crates of food were kinda heavy to lift but after all of that I felt like the strongest person ever, I may have also gotten some help with those crates but that’s not the point. Helping out just gets you in the mood and it kinda made me feel like a better person. Overall 10/10 recommend everyone to at least do it once, plus the people around are very nice and easy to talk to.
The DCM for the month of November was in the style of a fun friendsgiving. It is a spin on Thanksgiving where all attendees bring some food to share at a potluck. This event was really fun because especially after Fall Rally South caused a bit of a break in the division, it was cool to see my friends again. I personally brought some Wavy Lays chips and some Kettle cooked Jalepeño Chips to share with everyone, but some of the other stuff that people brought were cookies, drinks, and one person even made scalloped potatoes which were honestly the best thing there. Before the potluck though, we just hung out and had the acfual DCM portion of the event. It was really cool to see my friend Nick and Jasmine get member and officer of the month, because they were both on the division Spirit Committee with me so I got to be with these people a lot before Fall Rally South and we became good friends. After the potluck, we just congregated around and did a small service activity where we made cards for senior citizens, which was easy enough to do. Sunsgiving was a really fun event, and I'm glad I went.
champurrado, ponche, and pozole. Key Club sold delicious little Arab pastries (courtesy of Hani!) called Samboosak. The pastry was similar to a quesadilla; it had an aromatic spice and mozzarella cheese filling, wrapped with a fried tortilla to create a warm bite-sized bundle of goodness :) At the event's peak, people were filling the quad and lining up to buy our delectable Samboosak. We got raving reviews, and people even came back for seconds and thirds! Everything got really hectic, as we had to make makeshift signs to advertise and negotiate with other clubs to break our larger bills for change. At the end of the night, we were almost sold out! For me, the most memorable part of the night was when everyone was watching Ratatouille, and I was playing games with my friends at our stand. It was a group effort by our board to effectively operate the stand, and I am very thankful that so many people were willing to help.
As someone on the spirit committee for Division 30 South, I was able to experience several fun and exciting events including spirit nights which are in preparation for Fall Rally South and the event in itself. Fall Rally South is an event where students across California go to compete in spirit chants. My division included schools across AUHSD. In preparation for this event, all Key Club members going to FRS had to attend Spirit Nights which included Spirit Committee teaching chants to several members. Since I was apart of the Spirit Committee I had to learn the chants first in order to teach them to others and to be completely honest I enjoyed myself very much during the time I got to learn the chants and I was able to learn quite quickly because of the enthusiastic rhythm and when I got to teach them to others it was even more fun because I was able to share that fun with others and it was in general an amazing experience and for sure allowed me to get myself out there more and meet new people across the different schools. It also allowed me to speak out more because when teaching a lot of people, usually you have to be very loud for everyone to hear so these nights I got more and more comfortable speaking out. Doing the chants was always very enjoyable and being able to teach them was very exciting too. I would always look forward to the spirit nights because I was always very joyful during the time and when the day of the event came, our division did our best and I think we would all agree in saying it was a very memorable and fun day.
