Savanna and Cypress Key Club had a collaborative park cleanup on Saturday, September 17 at Twila Reid Park. The weather continued to switch from extremely sunny to cloudy throughout the event, but it luckily did not affect the overall success of the cleanup. In the beginning, everyone was given gloves and trash bags and told the basic “do’s and don’ts” of the event. We basically had to stay with at least one other person to ensure our safety. At first, most people stayed in a general area of the park but continued to spread and roam around throughout the time we were there. A good majority of the trash was small pieces of plastic, which is unfortunately not surprising. Some people just don’t think twice when they accidentally or even purposely drop small pieces of trash. There were some interesting finds like a metal fork and foam toy bullets. The event was not only rewarding in the sense of receiving community service hours for school but also feeling accomplished seeing the park so clean. Being outside and giving back to the community by keeping it clean was very fulfilling. In the end, our bags of trash were collected to be thrown away. Overall, I would say that this service event was a success, and I can’t wait to have more park cleanups in the future!
