GO RED FOR CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE AWARENESS

We at the Redding Rancheria are helping create awareness for GoRed. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year, but the simple truth is that most cardiovascular diseases can still be prevented with education and healthy lifestyle changes. Let’s remember to care for your heart with good nutrition and exercise.

YUROK TRIBE MMIWG/MMIP STATE CAPITAL GATHERING

Redding R anche Ria

On Tuesday, February 7, in Sacramento, our Redding Rancheria Tribal Council members supported the Yurok Tribe led event addressing the MMIWG/MMIP crisis in our nation. The first Native California Assembly Member and San Manuel Tribal member, James Ramos, spoke alongside many other tribal leaders and legislators in support of bills AB273 and AB44 which will give rights to tribal police and support tribal foster children, both helping combat MMIWG/WWIP. Senator Ramos also calls to California governor and legislation to give $200 million dollars to raise awareness and put prevention into action.

Just last year, 1 in 3 indigenous women experienced violence, which is incredibly disproportionate considering their white counterparts. Homicide is also the third leading cause of death for indigenous women in the nation. This crisis must be acknowledged and changes must be made to protect our indigenous sisters and family members.

February is American Heart Month and here at Redding Rancheria, we take that seriously!

Heart health is important at every age. A healthy heart helps pump oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body, makes physical activity easier, and reduces your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

Showing healthy habits to our future generations is also a way we can all do our part to help protect against heart disease.

What can you do for your heart health?

Y Be active for at least 30 minutes a day.

Y Make healthy food choices including a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

Y Avoid commercial tobacco products.

Y Know your blood pressure numbers - and if you don’t - see your provider and ask what your target numbers should be.

An important part of heart health is knowing your risk factors. You can control or treat these risk factors with lifestyle changes and your healthcare provider’s help:

Y High blood pressure

Y Smoking

Y High blood cholesterol

Y Lack of regular activity

Y Obesity or overweight

Y Diabetes

Even modest changes to your diet and lifestyle can improve your heart health and lower your risk by as much as 80 percent. Talk to your healthcare provider

to discuss ways you can help protect your heart
