February is American Heart Month and here at Redding Rancheria, we take that seriously!
Heart health is important at every age. A healthy heart helps pump oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body, makes physical activity easier, and reduces your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
Showing healthy habits to our future generations is also a way we can all do our part to help protect against heart disease.
What can you do for your heart health?
Y Be active for at least 30 minutes a day.
Y Make healthy food choices including a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.
Y Avoid commercial tobacco products.
Y Know your blood pressure numbers - and if you don’t - see your provider and ask what your target numbers should be.
An important part of heart health is knowing your risk factors. You can control or treat these risk factors with lifestyle changes and your healthcare provider’s help:
Y High blood pressure
Y Smoking
Y High blood cholesterol
Y Lack of regular activity
Y Obesity or overweight
Y Diabetes
Even modest changes to your diet and lifestyle can improve your heart health and lower your risk by as much as 80 percent. Talk to your healthcare provider to discuss ways you can help protect your heart
