Student of the Month

Ivy Long

Congrats to our May student of the month Ivy! Leadership and the teachers at POCS agreed that Ivy goes above and beyond and deserves this award. We interviewed some of Ivy’s peers, including Mrs. Dolan, Mr. Strasser, and her friends. Here's what they said.

What type of person is Ivy?

Riley: She's very kind and she'd do anything for anyone even if she doesn't know them.

Mr. Strasser: Ivy comes to school with a really positive friendly spirit. She's willing to help anyone in the group or anyone in the class. She is a dream for a teacher because of her willingness to ask questions and uses these questions to help other

students. I just overall enjoy her friendly vibes. She's a great friend and a great student/kid.

Danika: I think Ivy is really cool and she is very helpful. Ivy is my true inspiration. Whenever I see her sad, it hurts me emotionally. She’s always helping others.

Anonymous: She’s good at looking out for people and is always willing to help. If you fall she’ll help you get up.

Anonymous: She’s cool and she’s really nice. She’s a really good friend and she’s really creative. Anonymous: She’s kind, helpful, and considerate. She’s really selfless and always makes my days better.

Mrs. Dolan: Ivy is a kind, bubbly, positive person.

Dylan: Ivy is a very nice and supportive person. If you’re having a bad day she will do whatever it takes to cheer you up.

Why does Ivy deserve Student of the Month?

Ms. Dolan: Ivy is so deserving of this award because she is always thinking about others and is very mindful of the words people choose. She shows an incredible amount of empathy for others.

Dylan: She really deserves this award because she is very supportive of everything and does lots of things for other people.

Danika: She deserves to be student of the month because she's very generous and is very

empathetic. She will have empathy for others no matter what.

Riley: Ivy deserves student of the month because of how kind she is.

Mr. Strasser: Ivy deserves the award because of how friendly she is and how much she helps others.

We hope more people in the future will spread all of this kindness around the campus.

Staff of the Month

Mr. Strasser

My favorite thing to do is- well I really enjoy doing absolutely nothing sometimes. I really like hiking, nature, and mountain trails and things like that.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

places with very tasty food.

What makes a ‘good day’ at school?

Why did you become a teacher?

I learned from my math teacher. I was a bit of a class clown and my teacher one time threw me the chalk and said “you teach” and that was my first experience teaching. I fell in love with it and over time I noticed that I enjoyed

being around kids more than adults. I had an art degree but decided to go with teaching.

How long have you been teaching?

I believe that this is my 30th year teaching and I think it's my 11th year at POCS. Time flies!

What is your favorite hobby?

Staff of the Month

Mrs. McDonough

That I was a bit of a troublemaker when I was a student. I got into my fair share of trouble. Also that I had a mohawk and I would skateboard.

What is your dream vacation?

Anywhere where there’s good hiking, beauty, and very few people. Near

When my students are engaged and happy and excited about what they’re doing. There’s nothing more exciting than knowing your students are involved.

What inspires you?

Beauty. Y’know, seeing beautiful things, seeing beautiful places. And kids. I couldn’t do this job if kids didn’t make me want to go to work. Now, there’s difficult times for sure, but there’s connections that I make with students that make me want to stay in the classroom.

There are a lot of qualities that we love about Mrs. McDonough, she is fun and nice to be around. She loves to teach her students and loves spending time with her family and friends. Students always have something nice to say about her, she deserves it after all. I

Issue 7 Friday, May 5th, 2023 Page 2

asked to do a short interview with her and she was willing to do so! After the interview she wanted to share some things she enjoys about summer, and she loves to go camping and enjoys spending time with her family in the sunshine. She also likes to visit her mother and brother that live in Oklahoma! Did you know that Mrs. McDonough had a different name at birth? Her dad changed it before they came home from the hospital. Mrs. McDonough likes to take her dogs on walks often and loves to work on her yard and maintain it. Her students can easily name their favorite things about her and love spending time with her. She is fun to be around and makes going to school fun. She makes sure every student is safe and can succeed in school. She enjoys doing fun things and building relationships with her students and other teachers at POCS. She makes learning at school creative and entertaining. Anyways, here is the short interview and a couple of things students have to say about her.

Kylie: Do you have any hobbies?

McDonough: I love to walk my dogs and work on my yard a lot.

Kylie: Do you teach any enrichments?

McDonough: I teach strategic gaming and culinary.

Kylie: What do you like to do on your free time?

McDonough: I hang out with my family.

Kylie: What classes do you teach?

McDonough: I teach 7th grade English and History.

Kylie: Ok thank you for your time!

Kaz- I like her hair

Nebay- She’s powerful

Makayla- She gives a lot of constructive criticism

Community Service

Community Service is very important. Many people may contribute by cleaning up trash, helping teachers, or volunteering at shelters. Community service is unpaid work someone does to give back to the community. Personally, I believe more people should participate in community service.

Kira: I think it's important because it shows that you are committed to POCS.

Aaliyah: It's important to teach responsibilities.

Tae: So that we can connect more with our community.

Why do you think community service is important?

Ms. Dolan: It gives people the opportunity to give back to the community. It allows people to play a part in our community and teaches responsibility. It shows how impactful we can be to our community. It also shows us how if everyone comes together we can make a big difference.

EJ: I think it's important for your college resume.

Shereena: I think it's important because it gives back to the community.

Rafael: So that you can graduate and participate in field trips.

Nevaeh: I think it's important because people should know what is going on and be more helpful rather than sitting around.

Stella: It shows that our school is giving back to the community and shows that we care about the people around us.

Faye: Because it's a way of giving back to our school since we go to school for free.

Joe: I think it's important because it teaches people to do things without being payed. Instead, out of the kindness of their own heart. Have you finished your community service yet?

If not, there are many different examples of community service such as:

Improving the environment such as planting trees, composting, and cleaning out rivers.

Working with students: Volunteering at the YMCA, tutoring, and donating school supplies.

And more!

Sonia: Culinary is very fun and very productive

Asher: I feel like being in culinary school is very awesome.

What have you learned so far in culinary?

Rowan: I learned how to hold a knife and cut things.

Sonia: How to make basic recipes.

Asher: I learned how to cook for myself and it makes me proud.

Do you recommend this class? And why?

Rowan: Yes because you can learn how to make yummy food.

Asher: I do recommend culinary because you get to cook food.

Sonia: Yes I recommend it because you learn how to cook and utensils.

Special interview

Q: How do you feel about culinary?

Mrs. Jen: It's a lot of fun, I enjoy watching the students get excited about cooking.

Culinary is also known as a cooking class. It is a very fun class you get to learn how to cook and how to chop vegetables. You also learn about different foodborne pathogens. In culinary, you learn many safety tips. You'll also learn many easy and healthy recipes. Some of the foods they made were chicken quesadilla and rice bowls.

You learn how to make easy and healthy food. You can make these foods whenever you are hungry and there's no food at home. Mrs. McDonough teaches how to cook safely and when to eat. We learned how to use spices in many meals. Culinary can be really inspiring. It inspires others to be a chef.

Culinary helps you learn organization and teaches you new skills like managing a kitchen. Knowing how to manage a kitchen also means to keep the kitchen clean. It also teaches you how to multitask. I believe that this class gives students a newfound appreciation for food and cooking for others. Culinary can prepare students for future culinary careers.

Upcoming Music

Music has been around for a very long time, human beings have found comfort and happiness in it. There are many different music genres to choose from, some of the most popular like Rap, Pop, and Country to some of the least popular like Phonk to Cli-Fi, Dystopia, or Goth. People have different opinions on certain genres of music, for example, some people don't like Country music. Some people like listening to artists that aren’t popular, and some don’t mind whether others are popular or not. Some people associate music with their style, or music could be their whole personality! Anyways, what matters is what you like! Here is some music being released in May of 2023.

Fun Fact: Ms. Brandenburg’s favorite artists are Tupac, Etta James, Adele, and Dr.Dre.

Country: Fun Fact, Country is the most listenedto genre in the United States Anyway quite a few artists are releasing new music. There are two artists releasing on the 5th of May, Megan Moroney with Lucky and Rodney Crowell with The Chicago Sessions. There are also 5 artists releasing on the 19th. Brandy Clark - Brandy Clark, Leftover Salmon - Grass Roots, Erin

Kinsey - Bet My Heart EP, The Milk Carton Kids - I Only See The Moon, and Graham Nash - Now. Indie: On the 5th of May The Lemon Twigs are releasing Everything Harmony. The 12th of May ZAC with “ZAC II”. On the 19th, two albums are releasing: Dan Croll “Fools” and Alex

Lahey “The Answer Is Always Yes”. On the 26th, The Intersphere with “Wanderer” and Water From Your Eyes with “Everyone’s Crushed”.

Metal/Rock: There is quite a lot of music released in May, from my resources there is a total of 43 albums to be released. However, I will only be mentioning a few. May 5th, Dave Lombardo - Rites Of Percussion, Drain - Living Proof, Enforcer - Nostalgia. May 12th, Circus Of Rock - Lost Behind, Heavens Edge - Get it Right. May 19th, The Ocean - Holocene, Roadwolf - Midnight Lightning, Sleep TokenTake Me Back To Eden. May 26, ImmortalWar Against All, Sirena - 1977, and Oceanlord - Kingdom Cold.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find much on any other genres so I went around the school and asked 5 different students what their favorite album was. They all asked for their names not to be mentioned except for Kaz (Picture below), so I will not put them. There was Pebble Brain by Lovejoy, Like..? By Ice Spice, The Predator By Ice Cube, Graduation by Kanye West, and Emily Montes by Emily Montes.

Book Corner

A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning

A Series of Unfortunate Events book one a Bad Beginning, written by Lemony Snicket, is a mystery fiction novel. It is the first installation in a 13-book series that follows the Baudelaire orphans as they move from guardian to guardian, home to home to evade the evil man trying to steal their fortune.

The first book follows as their parent’s death is revealed and the children are brought to live with a distant relative, Count Olaf. Count Olaf forces the Baudelaire's to do many horrible chores and gives them a small sad room with only one bed for the three children. The three children are geniuses and have to use their wits to escape. The first three books of the series were adapted for a movie in 2004 and later the entire series made its way onto Netflix in 2017, all 13 books were split into 2 parts each. The series as a whole is amazing, but the first book is my favorite and arguably the best, go read this book.

Gods and Heroes

Gods and Heroes by Korwin Briggs is a book split into many parts to discuss the stories of deities and warriors from mythology all across the globe. It splits into a title page, an introduction paragraph, 2 or 3 short stories, and sometimes some fun facts about the culture or the deity. There are also sometimes chapters

about a certain type of creature or place, like dragons, giants, underworlds, nature spirits, and monsters. The “variety chapters” have about 5ish paragraphs each explaining what it is and where it's from. If you like mythology, and short stories or want to try something new, read this. It's my favorite book and is so good, go read it.

Phantoms

Phantoms by

Dean Koontz is a mystery thriller. This book follows two sisters, Lisa and Jenny Paige, who live in a small town. Jenny is the town doctor and is taking her sister to her house for the first time since their mother was unable to care for Lisa. Something feels off in the town, and they find the maid in their home dead on the floor of peculiar unknown circumstances. None of the phones work, and none else is responding in the town. The car stops working, and all the power is out. They have no communication, transportation, or power, and everyone is gone.
