Q: What do you like to do in your free time? A: Do my hobbies and go shopping. Q: What's your favorite K-pop group? A: Monsta X but I also really like Ateez. Q: What is your favorite song from that group? A: I like all their albums but if I had to pick one it would be UR. Q: How long have you worked at POCS? A: 2 and a half years.

to answer your questions and is a very kind person. Ms. Flores is a big part of POCS and takes on many responsibilities. Without Ms. Flores, POCS wouldn't be the way it is today. She makes such a positive impact on everybody's life.
Q: What are your favorite hobbies? A: I really like to read, watch movies, shows, and playing with my cat.
Mrs.Dolan: “I love that she is hardworking. She cares about the students here on campus. She is great at her job and she is extremely helpful. She's very kind and thoughtful.” Makayla: “She is super sweet. She always helps when I need papers printed. She always makes sure I'm safe. She is very pretty. She is so very kind. She doesn't mind sharing. She once gave me her water when I was thirsty. I think that she should have the greatest day because of how kind she is.”

Staff of The Month: Mrs. Graham Ethan Ortega, Hayden Dang (7th Grade)
We couldn’t meet with Mrs. Graham in person so we did our interview via email. How long have you been a principal? “This is my 7th year as a principal, and my 3rd year at POCS. Before coming to POCS, I was a principal at a bilingual dual immersion school in Grass Valley.” What made you want to be a principal? “It was a hard decision because I also really liked being a teacher. I taught Spanish and English Language Development for many years, and it was a difficult choice to give that up. However, the decision to become a principal was right for me. I think that this position plays to some of my strengths, and I love that the scope of my work includes everyone in the school community: students, staff, and families. Being a principal allows me to reach more students and make a positive difference in more ways.” What do you like about your job? “I enjoy the problem-solving aspect of my job. As the principal, I have a lot of opportunities to help and support students. I also like checking in with teachers and staff to learn from them about what is needed at POCS. Right now, I’m excited about finding more ways to empower students to find their voices and to make positive changes at our school. I think every student has the potential to be a leader, and it makes me happy to work with students to become Changemakers.” Who has been your favorite teacher so far? “My favorite teacher ever was my second/third grade teacher. I went to a small country school in far Northern California with just over 70 students, so teachers always had combination classes. We called our teachers by their first names or by nicknames. Bee (yes, like the insect) was my favorite teacher because she made learning come alive for us and encouraged us to be our best selves. We spent a lot of time outside, which had a big impact on me. She took us on field trips to her ranch where we got to play in the creek and pick apples from her orchard.”

Staff of The Month: Mrs. Graham Cont. Ethan Ortega, Hayden Dang (7th Grade) What's your favorite sport and favorite team? “My favorite sports teams are all of the POCS sports teams! I don’t follow professional sports so don’t have any particular favorites”. Who is your favorite student? “Whichever student I am talking to or working with is my favorite at that moment. I love all the POCS students the same.” What is something that you don't like about your job? “The hardest part of my job is when students do or say damaging things to each other. I try to remember the phrase, “Hurt people hurt people,” which reminds me that the people who bully or fight are usually kids who have big challenges going on in their personal lives. This helps me have compassion for them, but it doesn’t take away the damage that they caused. It is very painful for me when I see students who are going through a challenging time. I try my best to help, but often there isn’t an easy solution.” What is your birthday? “September 5th. I just turned 50 this year!!” What is your favorite food? “One part of living in Santa Rosa that I love is having access to so many different kinds of food from all over the world. In terms of global cuisines, it is a toss up between Mexican food and Thai food. If I had to choose one particular dish, it would be a plate of mole negro with chicken, rice and corn tortillas. I lived in Oaxaca, Mexico for a number of years, and this is my absolute favorite food of all time.” What is your favorite fruit? “Again, because of my time living in Mexico, I learned to love a lot of tropical fruits. A good papaya or mango with lime juice is definitely the top for me.”

Staff of the Month: Mrs. McDonough By: Esther Espana (7th Grade)
Q: What was your favorite subject growing up? A: When I was in school it would be Spanish. Q: What's your favorite hobby at POCS? A: I love volleyball and softball. I used to play volleyball in high school and I still play pickleball with my husband.
Q: How long have you worked at POCS? A: I think this is my seventeenth year.
Q: Do you enjoy teaching here at POCS? A: Yes, I like that we are a small community and I like that the teachers get to know each other and the students. It feels like a second family.
Q: Why did you choose to teach at POCS? A: Well I used to teach elementary and had to teach all the subjects and when I came to POCS I was very excited to teach just English and history. I also enjoy collaborating with the teachers and getting to know them. I also like the flexibility of working with other teachers. Q: What is your favorite memory here at POCS? A: Well one thing that stands out to me is when all the teachers decided to go to the beach and we all got our own picnic and we talked and laughed and played frisbee. Q: What do you enjoy the most about teaching? A: Well one thing I enjoy is that every day is the same. The students are amazing. I like helping kids get ready for high school and it's nice when kids come back and tell us everything in their lives and how they used the things we taught them in their lives. Q: Was your dream as a kid becoming a teacher? A: It was; I wanted to be a teacher but I didn't get my credentials until thirty and I thought I wasn't smart enough to teach. Q: What do you dislike about teaching? A: It’s when the superintendent tells us what to do instead of us choosing what’s best for our class. Q: What would your teacher's quote say? And why? A: It has to be something that talks about kindness.

Who inspires you the most? “My mom because she just very inspiring.” Harlyn “Shelby is kind and a great friend, she is always there when you need her, and she goes out of her way to help people.” Ava “She always tries her best to make things not awkward. She is always nice to everyone. She tries to make everyone feel welcome. Being at school would be a lot less fun and a lot less interesting. Volleyball Enrichment Addison Harold and Tayonna Rohrbach 8th grade Interview with Mrs. Wofford (volleyball coach) Q: When did you start playing volleyball? A: When I was in Highschool. Q: Did you choose to teach volleyball? Why or why not A: I did choose it because I really like this game (she loves it). Q: What is your favorite thing about teaching this enrichment? A: To see how much they can improve. Q: Do you have anything you would change about the volleyball enrichment? Why or why not A: The only thing I would change is to see students who actually chose this enrichment too put in effort. Q: Do you ever play volleyball yourself? (outside of school) A: Nope. I don’t have any opportunities. Q: What do you do in volleyball? A: Each day, we try to learn a certain skill and as we get better, we then start learning harder skills. This makes the game more fun. P.E. Enrichment Tatianna Gaitan and Bella Dunlap (8th) We Interviewed people in the Thursday/Friday enrichment. They play basketball, football, and soccer and they have a lot of free time. Most of the time they play basketball or do free play. All the students love Mr. A and they enjoy the PE enrichment. The Thursday and Friday PE enrichment is outdoors. Mr. A is a fun PE coach and he loves teaching people sports. Mr. A likes to dunk on people and 1v1 all the students.
Favorite thing about MR.A: he's a nice and athletic dude that will push you to your limits and not let you give up.

December Holidays By Davian Jimenez & Gustavo Singh, Grade 7 Kwanzaa: Kwanzaa is a holiday celebrated by African people worldwide to honor their African heritage, culture, family, and traditional values. It was established as a holiday in 1966 by Maulana Ron Karenga, an African-American professor, and activist. Kwanzaa was created as an alternative celebration for people of African descent who may not observe other December holidays. The holiday originated in West and Southwest Africa and is based on the African harvest celebrations. Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday but serves as a time to reflect on African principles called the Nguzo Saba, which include unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Christmas: Christmas is one of the most widely celebrated holidays around the world. It commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, who is considered the central figure of Christianity. Christmas falls on the 25th of December each year. The holiday has both religious and secular aspects. Many Christians attend church services on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day to celebrate the birth of Jesus. In popular culture, Santa Claus, also known as St. Nicholas, is a legendary figure associated with Christmas. According to tradition, Santa Claus travels on a sleigh pulled by eight reindeers and delivers gifts to children who have been on his good list throughout the year. In some countries, there is a belief that if children misbehave, they are put in the bad list and might receive coal or be visited by Krampus, a mythical creature who punishes naughty children. Chanukah: (Hanukkah) Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a significant holiday in the Jewish religion. It is observed for eight days and nights, usually falling between the 7th and 15th of December. Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem during the second century BCE. The holiday is celebrated by lighting the menorah, a special candelabrum with nine branches. Each night, one additional candle is lit until all eight candles, plus the central shamash (helper) candle, are illuminated. The menorah represents the miracle that occurred when a small amount of oil, enough for only one day, lasted for eight days. This miracle is symbolized by the lighting of the candles. During Hanukkah, traditional foods like latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled doughnuts) are enjoyed, and families play a game with a spinning top called a dreidel.

A1: I love seeing the growth the players make from the start of the year and the end of the year. Especially the interactions with the players. Q: When did you start coaching? The volleyball team is coached by Mrs. Wofford and Mrs. Dolan/Sawyer. The team is very successful because their coaches care, work hard, and try. It's not only the coaches that make the team so great, the players work together, try their best, and get better each game and practice. Tryouts took place last month, and games just started this month, make sure to support your school's girls volleyball team. 7th and 8th both have a team, make sure to check schedules and keep up with the games.

Rocketry Week Makayla 8th and Janet 8th Rocketry Week is a fun and great way to make new friends. You can easily meet new people because of the mixed-up classes! It may not be as comfortable as hanging out with your friends. But it’ll open doors to new opportunities to meet others and to try new things. Rocketry is learning about rockets and making rockets. You could even get a few points to boost your grades up. It shows your creativity and your technical skills. It teaches us to keep on going and to communicate with others. When you know how to communicate with others now it can benefit you in the future. It benefits by having experience in how to explain and accommodate plans. It is very helpful when you know these simple skills. Even though you might not ever do anything with rockets in your life, also learning new things will cause you to handle challenges with a different perspective. You also learn about The 3 laws of Newton during rocketry, although it may not be the funnest to learn about. You’ll soon learn that it’ll help you make your water rocket better. Learning Newton's laws can make your rocket the best of the best! Besides, wouldn’t you want to see your rocket fly high? Because I sure do! BEFORE ROCKETRY INTERVIEWS

January Holidays By: Davian Jimenez and Gustavo Singh 7th
New Year's Day: New Year's Day is a holiday that has been celebrated for a really long time, like over 4,000 years! It started way back in 2000 BC in Mesopotamia, which is an ancient place where modern-day Iraq is located. In Babylonia, they called it Akitu, and it started with the new moon after the spring equinox (that's when the day and night are almost the same length) in mid-March. But in Assyria, they celebrated it with the new moon closest to the autumn equinox (around mid-September). Nowadays, people all around the world celebrate New Year's Eve on December 31st. It's a big party! People dance, eat delicious food, drink tasty drinks, and watch or light up fireworks to welcome the new year. Some Christians even go to a special service called a watchnight service to pray and reflect. The celebrations can go on way past midnight and continue into New Year's Day, which is the first day of January. Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Martin Luther King Jr. was an amazing person who fought for equality and to end segregation in the United States. He was a black activist who believed that everyone should be treated the same, no matter their skin color. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a holiday to remember him and all the great things he did. Sadly, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. He was shot by a man named James Earl Ray, who used a sniper rifle. It happened at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Martin Luther King Jr. was standing on the balcony when James took advantage of the situation and shot at him. It's really sad, but we remember Martin Luther King Jr. on this day for his bravery and how he worked hard to make his dream of equality and justice come true. These holidays are important reminders of the past and the people who have made a difference in the world. Whether it's celebrating the start of a new year or honoring the legacy of a great leader, January is a month filled with meaningful observances that bring people together.

Health Enrichment By: Valeria Escutia & Blanca Escutia (8th) How long have you been teaching health: for about 12 years How has your experience been: really interesting class,babies are fun and scary, great experience. Why did you wanna start teaching: i think it's really important for young people to know how life is once they have a baby How does your class work: students have to sign up for a weekend have to sign a slip and be responsible for the baby, TA helps pass baby out What would i see your students doing on a typical day: asking a lot of questions , taking notes, laughing a little bit, asking questions about baby. Have you ever took the baby home: i did once, decided to take it home, the next morning i decided to stop at starbuck omw to work and i kept thinking i knew i shouldn't leave it, i went in and the baby started screaming and people were surrounding my car and almost calling 911, i explained it was a health class teacher and i showed them it was a robotic baby. Health is about how to take care of a baby just in case you have one at a young age, so it makes sure you know how to take care of one if you have to take care of them. It makes sure you know how to change a diaper, and how to feed the baby, how to burp them after they are done with milk their parents are giving them. And it shows what they need, It show how they are made and where they come from, it also shows what you shouldn’t be doing when your going to have a baby. It makes sure you know what your doing when your about to have one or are going to have one at a young age. You can see how hard it is to take care of a baby at a young age if you see kids your age or a couple years older than you with them, so you could take notes to not have one at a young age and just live your life a little more before you think about having a baby.
