Thank you for a wonderful July! We have so many new members enjoying the Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club.
I am very excited to announce that we will be getting Ethernet to the docks. This should help greatly with our service to the docks. We are always thinking of things that our members would see as an enhancement to their membership.
The deck is almost finished! We are excited that this extends the ability to have more members enjoying The Outrigger. The view is spectacular and we look forward to seeing you there.
We have an SHM LKN lake-wide event for all of our members of SHPYC, Skippers, Kings Point and Westport. Come out and mingle with the other SHM members at this event, Saturday, August 12 from 11-4pm. We will have complimentary hamburgers and hot dogs, X-Shore rides, a band and much more. Please look for the flyer in this The Watch. RSVPs are required to attend this event so that we can prepare accordingly. We look forward to seeing you at this first SHM LKN event.
The Fleet Raft-Up is scheduled for August 4. This one will be a little different and I am sure you will enjoy it. It will be from 6-8:30pm at Reggie’s Cove. It is always so much fun when members are rafting up with other members for a great time.
Member Mixer is on the 11th, and if you are a new member, this is time to meet other members. We have complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beer until they run out.
For the kids, we have the BarbieTea party. The tea parties are always a sell out so please get your reservations in early. Our SHPYC team always has a great time with our members children.
If you haven’t enjoyed a wine down cruise yet, they are very popular and what a way to see the sun go down. You won’t be disappointed. This is an adult only excursion.
Please contact Kayla, our Events Manager to plan your next party or event. We would look forward to helping you plan something fabulous for your friends and family! KTharrington@shmarinas.com.
Please remembers it is always a great idea to make reservations for our Dining Room so that we can make sure that we have a table to serve you.
Our members have been taking advantage of our wide variety of the Yacht Member Services here at the club. Please call the Ship Store at extension 6513. They look forward to serving you.
Our new menu will start on August 17th and Chef is excited. We look forward to rolling this out to our members to enjoy the delicious cuisine from Chef Andres and his team.
As we are in the 27th year of our club, we have been experiencing issues with our kitchen pipes. We will be doing an extensive pipe and reno repair to the kitchen drains & pipes beginning Monday, August 28. The dining room will be closed during this time. The Outrigger will be open every day during this time. We also plan to have dining events on the back lawn as well. We will keep you informed on the exact date that we will be able to reopen for dining. We are aiming for the end of the week barring we do not run into any complications. Thank you for your patience while we do this much needed repair work.
As always, it is a pleasure to serve you.
Kind Regards,
Kathee Dishner General ManagerLet's all put our hands together for our new Assistant General Manager, Nikole Maust!

Now that the season is winding down, I always like to take this opportunity to remind everyone how important shore power cord inspection is! A lot of factors are involved when it comes to having shore power for your boat. So often boat owners think power cords will last forever. Not true! Cords wear out just like anything else and weather, sun, rodents, etc. only add to the problem. Inspecting these cords is very important. How to inspect is just as important. Having cords in good condition lessons the dangers involving electricity around water (ESD, Electrolysis and much more)
Below are a couple of things to remember when doing your inspection.
1. Always turn the power off when inspecting!
2. Check both connection points, dockside, and boat side. If any browning or burn marks are found, take note. This could mean a loose connection but make sure it’s not the result of something else. If burnt on the outside of the plug there is a good chance, there is burning on the inside of the plug. Have a professional check it out and replace it immediately.
3. If a cord is found frayed or damaged in any way make sure it’s replaced. Do not splice!
4. Please get with your marina staff to lift the pavers on the dock and assist so the entire cord can be inspected.
5. Do not overload your circuits or receptacles.
6. Remember NO SWIMMING in the marina!
Important Facts to remember about ESD (Electric Shock Drowning)
• Have your boat tested once a year to see if it is leaking electricity or buy a clamp meter and test it yourself. If you find any problems, have your boat inspected by a qualified electrician trained to ABYC standards.
• Have a qualified ABYC electrician install an ELCI on your boat (refer them to the ABYC E-11 Standard) or use an ELCI in the shore power cord. As an alternative, install an isolation transformer on the boat.
• Test the GFCI/ELCI at least once a month or per the manufacturer's specifications.
• DO NOT do your own 120-volt AC electrical work on a boat or hire an electrician who is not familiar with ABYC standards to do it. Many of the problems that lead to electrical faults result from the differences between shore and boat electrical systems and standards.
• DO NOT use common household extension cords for providing shore power to your boat. Use, and encourage other boaters to use, shore power cords built to UL standards.
• NEVER dive on your boat to work on underwater fittings when it is plugged in to shore power, even in saltwater.
Please remember, NO SIMMING IN AND AROUND THE MARINA!!! Must be at least 20 yards from docks and boats.
ESD (electric shock drowning) is real and cannot be taken lightly. When someone drowns it’s too late! For more on ESD go to; http://www.boatus.com/seaworthy/magazine/2013/july/electric-shock-drowning-explained.asp
Marina Manager Reminder:
Know your boat inside and out and always CHECK YOUR BOAT regularly.
In the month of August, we take a look at The Hosler family. Steve & Janet Hosler have been members here at The Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club for eight years now. Their story of how they became members is a heartwarming one.
After hearing positive things about the club, Janet was really hopeful Steve would want to become members.
Unfortunately, they didn't share the same enthusiasm on this decision. Janet left for a church mission and when she returned, her friends shared that they had actually become members and took the Hoslers on a tour around the property. As you could guess, Janet was in awe and really hoped Steve would reconsidered the idea of becoming members. While they were at dinner, our old Assistant General Manager, Jeff Barry, came up to the table with not a bill but two memberships for Steve & Janet. While still in shock, Janet turned to Steve and he said that he signed them up while she was gone on her trip. They have been very active members ever since! Steve went on to join the Fleet Committee which has made such a positive impact on the club. "I've had a tremendous experience and it's been very fulfilling", Steve said while speaking about his experience as a Fleet Committee member.
The Hoslers are approaching their 10 year mark here soon and when asked what's the most important thing a prospective member should know, Janet said, "my biggest clue is to get involved". They have done just that. Whether it be attending events or putting events on of their own, there is not a corner of this club that they have not explored. One of their favorite things about the club is being able to bring their family (pictured left). Whether it be boating on the lake, swimming at the pool, or grabbing a delicious meal from our Dining Room, every moment shared with family is a good one here at SHPYC. Thank you Hoslers for your continued love and support for the club.
We're all Barbie Girls living in a Barbie World this month! In spirit of her new movie coming out, Barbie is making a personal visit to SHPYC with her sister to have tea with YOU! Don't miss out on this chance to meet Barbie and ask her all the questions you can think of! Ask her about her occupations, hopes & dreams, and what she likes to do for fun! We can't wait to see you there. Make sure to dress for the occasion!

This month we celebrate Saylor Marcus, a 16 month old Golden Retriever. She belongs to Shari & Steve Marcus. As you can tell Saylor is no stranger to the boating life which makes her the perfect candidate for our SHPYC dog of the month! Saylor absolutely adores all the humans around her and loves to be loved.
As for entertainment, Saylor prefers to hang out with her doggie boyfriend, Max. He is a Golden Doodle that lives next door and will frequently call Saylor out to play by barking for her. When not hanging out with Max, she enjoys gnawing on hard bones and teaching a lesson to her stuffed animal friends.
Saylor will never pass up a piece of food when offered and is the furthest thing from a picky eater. If you are lucky enough to see her out on the water, give her a friendly wave and ask her humans if she can have a treat!
Do you have a fur baby that loves the spotlight? Send us a message! They just may be our next Dog of the Month!

Is there ever really anything better than brunch on Sunday? These are the times to relax, enjoy time with family, and eat all the food you were too busy to eat during the work week! Sunday Brunch at The Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club allows you to do all three all at once!
Come take a ride on the Nopkehee! With a maximum of eight people, your sunset cruise will be an intimate moment out on the Lake Norman waters. The boat offers bench seating inside the cabin which is the perfect place to enjoy some light hors d'oeuvres paired with a glass of wine or beer. If this sounds like an evening you would enjoy, head to our website www.peninsulayacht.com to register!
At the risk of being redundant, the 25th Annual Poker Run was a FABULOUS success! The weekend began with a Friday evening of Dueling Pianos. After days of threatening weather, the clouds parted to give SHPYC members a wonderful Saturday for boating from Poker stop-to-stop. Back at the Club, while the Poker hands were recoreded, many participated in the Silent Auction. The day ended with Chips for Charity. Thanks to the generosity of our Club membership, the Fleet Committee raised over $30,000 for distribution to our three charities: Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, Levine & Dickinson Hospice House, and Calvin Newman Youth Boating Safety Fund. Our Poker Run winners were: Michael Kingsley, who took the $2,000 first place, J. D. Fulks, our $1,000 second place winner, and Kendra Winge, who took the $500 third
But there are still more grand events scheduled by your Fleet Committee! Mark your calendars for: Raft up #3: Aug 4 (trying something new - a Friday evening), SHM LKN-Wide event Aug 12, Sail Crew Party Aug 26 (Sail Captains and potential Crew can meet), Raft up #4 Sept 9, Fall Fellowship Sail Series begins Sept 10, Fall Lake Tour with John Johnson Sept 16 (tentative), The Peninsula Cup Regatta Oct 13-15 with Oyster Roast Oct 14, and finally the Treasure Hunt Oct 21. And More! Wow!!
All this happens because of 1) our incredible Fleet Committee
Our busy summer sailing season is now at full speed as we continue our call out to sailors and gear up for our remaining events. All hands on deck!
If you are interested in getting involved in sailing, just reach out. The sailing community at SHPYC and across LKN is a big family. Come on out and join the fun!
Our co-hosting of the Wednesday Night Series is also a smashing success. Evening racing provides for a gentle breeze and tremendous sunsets. Sport boats and cruisers are all welcome. Come on out and watch a start, grab a crew position, or join us on the Mark Boat for a front row seat!
volunteers and 2) our Sponsors. As Purser, it was my job to facilitate the annual sponsor agreements, and I would be remiss if I did not recognize our 2023 sponsors: Foreign Cars of Charlotte, Finks Jewelers, Talley’s Pier 77, Hendrick Northlake, Davidson Wealth Management, Carefree Boat Club, Promo Threads, Hacker Boats, Masterpiece Detail, and Hagerty Insurance. Please thank them for their support and consider supporting them in return.
Now for a PSA: The sixth policing agency operating on LKN is NC Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE). Due to recent events, they are increasing their presence. Most boaters know that the NC legal limit for operating a motor vehicle (auto, boat, etc) is 0.08 BAC. Beer and wine are allowed open onboard, BUT spirits (liquor and fortified wine) are only legal on vessels that would qualify as a residence (has a berth, head and some say a galley). Unlike other boating violations, alcohol citations can have graver consequences. So keep those bottles at home!
See you at the Club if I’m not out on LKN!
Keep an eye out for our upcoming events. Everyone is welcome:
• August 12 – SHPYC Member Mixer – Come meet the Fleet Committee
• August 26 – Crew Party – Come meet sailors and network
• September 10 – Fall Fellow Series Race 1 – Join us in the 5 race series
• October 13 – 15st Annual Peninsula Cup Regatta –This will be a fun filled weekend!
As always, please reach out with suggestions as to how to improve our Club’s sailing experience for both youth and adults!
To fair winds and following seas, Tim
