THE THE WATCH WATCH

AUGUST 2025 AUGUST 2025

GENERALMANAGERMESSAGE

Dear Members,

As summer comes to a close this August, we would like to thank all of our members who we ’ ve seen over the last couple of months here at the club. It is you, our members, that make a difference!

The SHM-LKN event was an overwhelming success The short downpour didn’t stop the dueling pianos from bringing the fun for our members. We will have this event next year if you weren’t able to make it this year.

We enjoy seeing your children and grandchildren using the pool, at our kids’ program, in the dining room, and out on the lake.

It has been a hot season this year, but cooler weather is coming soon Don’t forget that the Outrigger and pool have extended seasons this year, as our members have asked for this. After Labor Day, the pool will be “swim at your own risk,” another way to give our members a longer pool season.

Our Ship Store is stocked with a great selection of merchandise! Next time you're here, be sure to stop by and check out everything that Harry and the team have waiting for you.

Thank you to all of our members who attended the SHM experiences. We have a large attendance of our members and are thankful they enjoy these experiences! During the last event, some of them even met up to see each other Visit SHmarinas com to see all of the experiences that Safe Harbor offers our members.

As always, it is our pleasure to serve you. See you soon at the club!

BOATING&MARINANEWS

Rules of the Road Reminder

On Lake Norman, boats range from power-driven to sailing vessels. As these vessels navigate the waters, sailboats are especially vulnerable, especially while under sail power. Please remember that when sailboats are under sail, the “rules of the road” states that all power-driven vessels must give way to all sailing vessels.

The rule states...

A power-driven vessel underway shall keep out of the way of:

- a vessel not under command;

- a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver;

- a vessel engaged in fishing; and

- a sailing vessel.

A sailing vessel underway shall keep out of the way of:

- a vessel not under command;

- a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver; and

- a vessel engaged in fishing

Marina Manager Reminder

1. Always remove passengers from the boat, and re-board only after refueling is complete and the engine is restarted.

2. The engine should be turned off, and do not operate any electrical switches, including the ignition, while refueling.

3. Keep all doors, ports, and hatches closed, and only open them when refueling is complete.

4. To prevent unintentional sparking, hold the hose nozzle firmly against the fuel fill (not a rod holder, water tank fill, or holding tank, which happens more often than you think). Also, don't overfill.

5. After refueling, ensure the engine compartment blower runs for at least four minutes. This may delay others waiting to fill up, but it's worth the wait.

6. A quick sniff test takes only a few seconds and is the most effective method for detecting fuel leaks. Always open the engine bay hatch (if the boat is equipped) and smell the bilge area as well as any closed compartments or interior spaces.

FLEETCOMMITTEENEWS

ht Club Fleet Committee (PYCFC) partners with the Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club (SHPYC), and hosts an f unique and fun events that provide SHPYC members with the opportunity to meet and connect with other members. These fun and engaging outings help build friendships.

Fleet Committee events occur all year long. The 2025 Icicle Series, Commodore’s Ball, Polar Plunge, Spring Fellowship Regatta, CPR training, Spring Lake History Tour, Car/Boat Show, Pancake Breakfast, Fleet Commissioning, Family Fishing, Poker Run, and Speakeasy for Cause have already occurred, and each was a tremendous success. Still to occur this year are the Summer Raft Ups, Fall Lake History Tour, Fall Fellowship Regatta, Peninsula Cup Regatta, and the Pirate Treasure Hunt (a family favorite).

All this only happens because of 1) Our incredible Fleet Committee volunteers who cannot be thanked enough, and 2) Our Sponsors. The Purser manages the relationship between our Sponsors and the PYCFC. I would like to recognize our 2025 Sponsors (and their sponsorship level; at additional level indicated by +): Commodore Foreign Cars of Charlotte, Talley’s Pier 77 and Windsor Jewelers (new); Captain Davidson Wealth Management, Hendrick Northlake, Law Firm Carolinas++, Mission Enterprises II+, Murphy Business Sales+ (new), and Promo Threads+; and Ensign United Community Bank+ and Larry Helms Insurance (new). Please thank them for their support and consider supporting them in return.

Now for some suggestions and reminders: 1) Everyone, especially boaters, need to have the what3words app on their phone. This free app generates 3 words that pinpoint your location within 10 feet. This greatly speeds up emergency response. All responding agencies on LKN use this app, and it is used worldwide. 2) The sixth policing agency operating on LKN is NC Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE). Spirits (liquor and fortified wine) are only legal on vessels that would qualify as a residence, i.e., a vessel that has a berth, head, and some include a galley. Unlike other boating violations, alcohol citations can have graver consequences. BTW, alcohol is involved in most boating accidents/fatalities. 3) If your vessel is equipped with an engine cut-off switch, legally, you have to use it. 4) Remind your passengers that even though they can’t be seen, propellers are sharp, spin fast, and need serious respect. 5) Fire extinguishers need to be less than 12 years old. 6) Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) save lives - but only if worn!

See you at the Club if I’m not out on LKN!
