We deliver your TO-GO orders right to your boat. All you have to do is call the hostess stand and we will be happy to bring your food to the gas dock or your slip!
The Summer Kid Program is off to a great start and Katherine is doing a fabulous job! If you want your child or grandchild to attend, please reach out to Karmitage@shmarinas.com
We hope you had a great time at the complimentary SHM LKN event here at the SHPYC in June. We enjoy seeing all of the Safe Harbor properties join together and celebrate.

BOATING&MARINANEWS

Boat Responsibly!

Here we are in the middle of another busy boating season! July is especially busy due to the July 4th holiday. During this time there are more boaters on the water which means more inexperienced and impaired boaters. No matter what level of boater you are, it is important to be educated.
In the state of NC, if born before January 1 , 1988, you must complete a NASBLA-approved boating education course before operating any vessel propelled by a motor of 10 HP or greater. Please do not get caught up on the date. This curriculum is good for all ages whether you ’ re a seasoned boater or a first-timer!
As mentioned, the curriculum is great and very beneficial but following it with on-the-water training, in my opinion, is just as important!
§75A-16.2. AN ACT SIGNED INTO LAW ON JULY 10, 2009 TO IMPROVE BOATING SAFETY BY REQUIRING BOATING SAFETY EDUCATION PRIOR TO OPERATING A VESSEL WITH A MOTOR OF TEN HORSEPOWER OR GREATER, AS RECOMMENDED BY THE JOINT SELECT COMMITTEE ON MANDATORY BOATING SAFETY EDUCATION.
(a) No person shall operate a vessel with a motor of 10 horsepower or greater on the public waters of this State unless the operator has met the requirements for boating safety education.
(b) A person shall be considered in compliance with the requirements of boating safety education if the person does one of the following: (1) Completes and passes the boating safety course instituted by the Wildlife Resources Commission under G.S. 75A-16.1 or another boating safety course that is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and accepted by the Wildlife Resources Commission; (2) Passes a proctored equivalency examination that tests the knowledge of information included in the curriculum of an approved course; (3) Possesses a valid or expired license to operate a vessel issued to maritime personnel by the United States Coast Guard; (4) Possesses a State-approved nonrenewable temporary operator’s certificate to operate a vessel for 90 days that was issued with the certificate of number for the vessel, if the boat was new or was sold with a transfer of ownership; (5) Possesses a rental or lease agreement from a vessel rental or leasing business that lists the person as the authorized operator of the vessel; (6) Properly displays Commission-issued dealer registration numbers during the demonstration of the vessel; (7) Operates the vessel under onboard direct supervision of a person who is at least 18 years of age and who meets the requirements of this section; (8) Demonstrates that he or she is not a resident, is temporarily using the waters of this State for a period not to exceed 90 days, and meets any applicable boating safety education requirements of the state or nation of residency; (9) Has assumed operation of the vessel due to the illness or physical impairment of the initial operator, and is returning the vessel to shore in order to provide assistance or care for the operator; (10) Is registered as a commercial fisherman or a person who is under the onboard direct supervision of a commercial fisherman while operating the commercial fisherman’s boat; or (11) Provides proof that he or she was born before Jan. 1, 1988. Any person who operates a vessel with a motor of 10 horsepower or greater on the waters of this State shall, upon the request of a law enforcement officer, present to the officer a certification card or proof that the person has complied with the provisions of this section.
(c) Any person who violates a provision of this section or a rule adopted pursuant to this section is guilty of an infraction, as provided in G.S. 14-3.1. The court shall assess court costs for each violation but shall not assess a penalty. A person may not be convicted of violating this section if, when tried for the offense, the person produces in court a certification card or proof that the person has completed and passed a boating safety course in compliance with subdivision (b)(1) of this section.
(d) No unit of local government shall enact any ordinance or rule relating to boating safety education, and this law preempts all existing ordinances or rules.
(e) An operator of a personal watercraft on the public waters of this State remains subject to any more specific provision of law found in G S 75A-13 3

Boating & Marina News

We are thrilled to share that the weekend of June 20–21 was an outstanding success, thanks to our charity fundraising events the Speakeasy for a Cause and Silent Auction and our 27th annual Poker Run. The energy, generosity, and camaraderie of those who participated made it truly unforgettable Heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who made it all possible: the club’s members and guests, event sponsors, wonderful volunteers, generous donors, and especially SHPYC and its dedicated staff.
We were blessed with perfect weather for Friday evening’s highly anticipated Speakeasy for a Cause and Silent Auction The weekend kicked off on a meaningful note as we raised $18,700 in support of our charitable partners: Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, VIA Health Partners (Levine & Dickson Hospice House), and the Calvin Newman Youth Boating Education Fund.
Saturday’s Poker Run brought excitement on and off the water, offering a perfect blend of competition and community spirit. A huge thank-you to our eight incredible sponsors whose support made this event possible: Talley’s Pier 77 Marine, Foreign Cars Charlotte, Windsor Jewelers, Law Firm Carolinas, Mission Enterprises II, Promo Threads, Murphy Business Sales, and United Community Bank Also, congratulations to this year’s Poker Run winners, who played smart hands and walked away with fantastic cash prizes!
These events represent just a few highlights from the diverse lineup organized by the Fleet Committee for the enjoyment of the club’s members. Others include the Car & Classic Boat Show, Lake History Tours, Pancake Breakfast, Family Fishing, Raft Ups, Pirate Treasure Hunt, and our sailing events such as the Icicle Series, Spring Fellowship Regatta, Fall Fellowship Regatta, and our signature sailing event the Pen Cup. None of these would be possible without the energy and commitment of our incredible volunteers. If you are looking for a rewarding way to get involved, we would love to have you join us!
Please note: Participation in Fleet events, the club’s boating activities (i e safety courses), and volunteer efforts all contribute to point accumulation toward the Power Boater of the Year, Yachtsman of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year awards, which will be presented at the Commodore’s Ball in early 2026.
Lastly, mark your calendars for our second Raft Up of the season on July 19, themed “Freedom & Patriotism” in celebration of Independence Day. Come dressed in your favorite red, white, and blue for an afternoon of fun on the water More details are shared in The Watch and the club’s Happenings In the meantime, we wish everyone a safe and memorable Fourth of July holiday, and we look forward to seeing you at future events!
THESAILINGSCENE
Summer has arrived and with it the vagaries of the breezes on Lake Norman! Nonetheless, the Wednesday Night Series that the club co-sponsors with the Outrigger Yacht Club is well along and going strong Every Wednesday, some 20 or so sailing yachts head out to race "round the buoys” just outside our harbor The breezes are what the breezes are it does not deter the sailors from the fun! If you would like to join them for a race, just reach out to Mark Cook, Sail Fleet Captain, and he’ll set you up.
Also, if you have the sailing itch, come to the Sail Crew Party at the club on August 24 This is a fun ‘meet ’n greet’ for skippers to meet potential crew and vice versa. No experience necessary, come and learn. Check out the weekly Happenings email blasts for details.
It won’t be long though before the winds strengthen and the fall sailing schedule kicks off in early September The PYC Fleet Committee hosts the Fall Fellowship Series, casual racing held in the afternoon on four consecutive Sundays in September: 9/7, 9/14, 9/21 and 9/28 The best part is the competitor camaraderie in the SHPYC bar following each race! Watch this space for details The Notice of Race on Regatta Network can be found here: https://www.regattanetwork.com/event/30001
Then, in early October, the Fleet Committee and SHPYC will be holding the 33 Annual Peninsula Cup Regatta, our preeminent sailing event! Stay tuned for all the details of the fun weekend as we get closer.
Fair winds and calm seas!
