Marina Manager Reminder
Fueling Tips:
http://www.boatus.org/clean-boating/fueling/tips/
Whether you refuel at a roadside gas station, on the water at a gas dock, or use portable containers, there are some general tips that apply to all fueling situations.
Safety First!
No matter where you are refueling, always clear the area of anyone not directly involved with fueling boat.
Put out all smoking materials and secure your boat to the dock.
Turn off engine(s), electronics, and extinguish all open flames
Keep the nozzle in contact with the edge of the fill to prevent buildup of static electricity to prevent sparking.
Don’t top off your tank. Know how much fuel your tank holds and fill it to about 90%. Fuel expands as temperatures rise.
Clean up fuel spills immediately with an oil-only absorbent pad. Wipe down the bilge or any interior parts that may have come in contact with fuel.
Treat your fueling operations with care. Never use hands-free clips, and avoid any distractions while fueling.

FLEETCOMMITTEENEWS
REARCOMMODORE
Greetings fellow boaters & welcome to spring! I don’t know about you, but I found this winter to be colder than usual, so I’m very glad to see the thermometer tick up a bit. And, as the saying goes, in the spring a young sailor’s thoughts turn to…varnish, some new sails, perhaps a little gel coat polish…well, you get the point! Time for boating!
And we have a full agenda of fun awaiting us. By the time you read this we will have already completed the Icicle Series (b-r-r-r-r) and the Spring Fellowship Regattas. It’s great to see yachts back out on the water. Then, on Saturday, April 26th, we get to enjoy “land yachts”: The 4th Annual PYC Fleet Committee Old & New Car Show and Classic Boat Show! This show includes Antique Boats as well and it’s all right here at SHPYC. Delicious food (courtesy of SHPYC’s Food Truck), funky music, and a few acres of gorgeous sheet metal and varnished mahogany! Free admission, so your only responsibility is to enjoy yourself and be sure to vote for your favorite vehicle. Note: Rain Date is Sunday, April 27.
Looking a little farther out, be sure to put the Fleet Commissioning Weekend on your calendar (May 24-25), and new this year, we’re planning a very special Poker Run Weekend (June 20-21)! Plans are being developed for a very secret…um, hmmm…I guess I can’t tell you anymore, it’s all very hush-hush. Watch this space for more information as we get closer…
But back to April. Happy Easter everyone and remember: if you eat the ears first, they can’t hear you coming!
Go Where the Wind Blows!
THESAILINGSCENE
The Spring Fellowship Regatta was a great lake-wide success with ten sailboats registered. On March 22nd, the wind set up for a challenging day of racing with a steady 12 knot wind and reported gusts up to 30. Results of the race can be found at https://www.regattanetwork.com/event/29230 .
Any regatta that PYC Fleet hosts gives members the opportunity to rent two of the club’s pontoons to get out on the water to either run a race committee, set up a race course, or just enjoy being out on the lake. SHPYC will host our next sailing events this fall and we have a number of sailboats moored at SHPYC that are racing this summer, so if you just want to crew or learn to set up a race course by being part of our R e at markalancook@yahoo.com . No sailboat needed.
Check out other 2025 SHPYC sailing opportunities by visiting the Sailing Calendar and Races at https://www.peninsulayacht.com/sailing .
See you on the lake,
Mark A. Cook
