FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS

BY: DR. MIKE MILTICH - 2023 FLEET PURSER
At the risk of being redundant, the 25th Annual Poker Run was a FABULOUS success! The weekend began with a Friday evening of Dueling Pianos. After days of threatening weather, the clouds parted to give SHPYC members a wonderful Saturday for boating from Poker stop-to-stop. Back at the Club, while the Poker hands were recoreded, many participated in the Silent Auction. The day ended with Chips for Charity. Thanks to the generosity of our Club membership, the Fleet Committee raised over $30,000 for distribution to our three charities: Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, Levine & Dickinson Hospice House, and Calvin Newman Youth Boating Safety Fund. Our Poker Run winners were: Michael Kingsley, who took the $2,000 first place, J. D. Fulks, our $1,000 second place winner, and Kendra Winge, who took the $500 third
But there are still more grand events scheduled by your Fleet Committee! Mark your calendars for: Raft up #3: Aug 4 (trying something new - a Friday evening), SHM LKN-Wide event Aug 12, Sail Crew Party Aug 26 (Sail Captains and potential Crew can meet), Raft up #4 Sept 9, Fall Fellowship Sail Series begins Sept 10, Fall Lake Tour with John Johnson Sept 16 (tentative), The Peninsula Cup Regatta Oct 13-15 with Oyster Roast Oct 14, and finally the Treasure Hunt Oct 21. And More! Wow!!
All this happens because of 1) our incredible Fleet Committee
SAILING SCENE Let’s go sailing!
Our busy summer sailing season is now at full speed as we continue our call out to sailors and gear up for our remaining events. All hands on deck!
If you are interested in getting involved in sailing, just reach out. The sailing community at SHPYC and across LKN is a big family. Come on out and join the fun!
Our co-hosting of the Wednesday Night Series is also a smashing success. Evening racing provides for a gentle breeze and tremendous sunsets. Sport boats and cruisers are all welcome. Come on out and watch a start, grab a crew position, or join us on the Mark Boat for a front row seat!
volunteers and 2) our Sponsors. As Purser, it was my job to facilitate the annual sponsor agreements, and I would be remiss if I did not recognize our 2023 sponsors: Foreign Cars of Charlotte, Finks Jewelers, Talley’s Pier 77, Hendrick Northlake, Davidson Wealth Management, Carefree Boat Club, Promo Threads, Hacker Boats, Masterpiece Detail, and Hagerty Insurance. Please thank them for their support and consider supporting them in return.
Now for a PSA: The sixth policing agency operating on LKN is NC Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE). Due to recent events, they are increasing their presence. Most boaters know that the NC legal limit for operating a motor vehicle (auto, boat, etc) is 0.08 BAC. Beer and wine are allowed open onboard, BUT spirits (liquor and fortified wine) are only legal on vessels that would qualify as a residence (has a berth, head and some say a galley). Unlike other boating violations, alcohol citations can have graver consequences. So keep those bottles at home!
See you at the Club if I’m not out on LKN!
Keep an eye out for our upcoming events. Everyone is welcome:
• August 12 – SHPYC Member Mixer – Come meet the Fleet Committee
• August 26 – Crew Party – Come meet sailors and network
• September 10 – Fall Fellow Series Race 1 – Join us in the 5 race series
• October 13 – 15st Annual Peninsula Cup Regatta –This will be a fun filled weekend!
As always, please reach out with suggestions as to how to improve our Club’s sailing experience for both youth and adults!
To fair winds and following seas, Tim
Harbick
