Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club Watercraft Safety

The club offers kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) for our members. All watercrafts must be signed out in the ship store. Rider must be at least 16 years old or accompanied by an adult. Watercrafts must be returned and signed back in one hour before closing.
Canoe, Kayak & SUP Safety Tips
Always have a partner or adult supervision when using a watercraft. Wear bright clothing - safety is our top priority! PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) are required at all times and must be properly fitted. Always carry a whistly or signaling device onboard at all times.
Prohibited Activities
No swimming in the marina or near docks/pier. If you fall off a watercraft, get back in and out of the water immediately. Never stand on a paddleboard unless in control and balanced. Return to launch on your kneesno exceptions.
Water Safety
Beware of the ESD (Electric Shock Drowning)
Stray currents in the water from damaged or frayed cords can cause electrocution. Avoid swimming near docks using electrical power. Watch for Boat Traffic
Boats are constantly moving in and out of the marina - stay alert and cautious around docks and slips.
Weather Awareness
Check the sky often.
Sudden storms can occur - return to the dock as soon as you hear thunder or see lighting.
Boundaries
All SHPYC watercrafts must remain withing the designated cove. Stay to the far, opposite side of the marina.
Operating Watercraft
Maintain Control:
Must be able to turn left/right, stop forward momentum, and paddle backward in a controlled and safe manner.
Kayaks Only:
Ensure the plug is securely in place (located in the back). If a vessel starts to sink, do not try and save it - let it go.

Boating & Marina News

The Fleet Committee wishes everyone a healthy, safe, and enjoyable summer so far. It is great to be heading into the peak season for boating and our Fleet Committee events. As in the past, we are excited to be bringing members opportunities to socialize and enjoy everything Lake Norman has to offer, including the following upcoming events
The kids will be excited about our first June activity, the annual Family Fishing event on June 7 . This year, we will be back on the water again fishing from the club’s double-decker pontoon boat. There will be fishing guides, poles, and bait available. Bag lunches will also be provided for $12 each.
Our biggest event for raising funds for the charities that we support is around the corner, Speakeasy for a Cause, a very fun and exciting 1920’s themed gala that will be held on June 20 . The evening will coincide with our annual Silent Auction, as well as a Great Gatsby-themed dinner in the club’s restaurant. The most important aspect of the Speakeasy and the Silent Auction is that the funds raised are donated to three local organizations which we have the privilege to partner with:
Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center - provides high-quality, affordable early education and care for any child of our community without regard to race, ethnicity, religion or socioeconomic status.
VIA Health Partners, Levine & Dickson Hospice House - a non-profit specializing in providing end-of-life care to 38 counties across North and South Carolina.
Calvin Newman Youth Boating Education Fund - provides free boating education and safety for the youth in our area.
The next day, following the Speakeasy for a Cause, is one of our signature on-water events, the Poker Run held on June 21 This is a “not-to-miss” day for the family and will be the 27 annual Poker Run, an event that captures the fun and prize opportunities making this a highlight of our summer season. If you have not been part of the Poker Run previously, we hope you will join us. Here are a few things to know:
The Poker Run takes place on the water. Stop at 5 locations and collect a sealed card envelope at each stop. These 5 cards make up your poker hand. You can play more than one hand. The more hands you play, the better your chances of winning. Hands cost $18 in advance or $20 on the day of the event.
Stops are open from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM. It is not a race, so take your time and enjoy the lake. Shuttle boats are available if you prefer not to captain your own.
Starting at 3:30 PM, head to the Commodore’s Room to sign in, group your cards into hands, and open the envelopes. If your hand is not strong, you can buy extra cards to try to improve it.
No poker experience necessary. We will help you make your best hand.
Cash prizes go to the top 3 hands!
Other fun on-water activities we sponsor are the Raft-Ups, a long-popular tradition on the lake We have three remaining outings planned this year: July 12 - Independence Day Themed th August 9 - Hawaiian Themed th September 13 - 70s & 80s Themed th
Have a safe, enjoyable summer on our beautiful lake. We hope you will take advantage of these and the many other events the Fleet Committee organizes each year. Details are available through the club’s monthly Watch, weekly e-blasts, and website.

THESAILINGSCENE

Why do we sail?
There’s a question every sailor is asked at some point why do you sail? It's not always easy to answer It’s not for the comfort The wind can be cruel, the sea unforgiving Sails tear Lines snap The sun burns The cold bites. It’s not for the speed. We move slower than most things with an engine, meandering in a world that demands efficiency. But then there’s a moment When the sails catch just right, and the boat leans into the wind as if it remembers something ancient There’s no engine, no noise Just wind, water, and the quiet hum of being in sync with a force far greater than ourselves We sail to be reminded of our smallness We sail to remember we are alive. We sail to find silence in a loud world and challenge in a comfortable one. We sail because out there, the horizon isn’t just a line it’s a promise.
Time to experience sailing for yourself Please contact Mark Cook, Greg Polek or myself to crew No sailboat needed! Check out other 2025 PYC sailing opportunities by visiting the Sailing Calendar and Races at https://www.peninsulayacht.com/sailing
See you on the water,
