NEW YEAR IN NEW YORK

THE MAGIC OF CELEBRATING THE

All eyes are on the excitement that unfolds in Times Square as the world collectively says goodbye to the old and hello to the new. At the center of the action is the New York Marriott Marquis, and we recently had the opportunity to get an exclusive look from Gary Winkler, Vice President of Stakeholder Services & Signature Events at the Times Square Alliance, on what goes on behind the scenes on one of New York City’s biggest nights.

What makes Times Square the best place to celebrate New Year’s Eve?

Gary Winkler (GW): This is where it happens—the magical place where the famous ball drops. It is what we all grew up watching and what everyone today continues to see, whether it’s on TV or (now) online. Not only are millions of Americans watching what is happening in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, people from around their world have their eyes on that ball. For many, it is a bucket list moment to say, “I was there.” You know you are surrounded by others who share the same enthusiasm for the experience. The vibe is amazing, and the final hour of the year is like nothing you have been part of in your life. John Lennon’s “Imagine” is performed

right before the ball drops and, at last, on this special night, the “world is one” together. As that sinks in your brain, 3,000 pounds of confetti floats down on all—there is truly nothing quite like it.

Tell us about the planning/production process of putting on the iconic New Year’s Eve event in Times Square each year.

GW: Well, the process is ongoing. The wrap-up extends a few months into the year, and the planning of the next one then gets underway. The event is quite complex in that we welcome any network to be a part of it. Unlike the Olympics, the Super Bowl, award shows, and other high-profile events, Times Square New Year’s Eve does not enter exclusive broadcast rights agreements. Our goal is to shine a global spotlight on the center of the universe (Times Square). So, we welcome any outlet to come and cover the event.

How does your team keep this event fresh and the best it can be each year?

GW: Working with many television outlets allows us to tap into relevant musical acts. Musical performances have always been a big part of this

event.“Who will be performing this year?” is always of interest. Who will it be at this year’s event? You will have to wait and see.

We also look at relevant, timely global topics. A special guest each year presses the signal of lowering of the ball at 11:59 pm. A few names include Muhammad Ali, former President Bill Clinton, and Lady Gaga.

Additionally, the event continues to thrive through great partnerships. Kay Jewelers tell the story of LOVE that resonates with so many.

What does the process look like for pulling together a savvy team to execute this event on-site each year?

GW: Great question, as it takes an army to make it happen and working with the best of the best from networks to vendors to brilliant folks in the tech space. On top of that, we are not an arena. We are subject to late December NYC weather conditions, and “doors” are always open. In addition to the crew, we rely on our partnerships with the Mayor’s Office of Event Coordination, the New York Police Department, and the Department of Sanitation.

Tell us about you and your role putting on the world’s greatest New Year’s Eve party in Times Square.

GW: I like to think of myself as a conductor of a very large band. Collaborating with our partners at Jamestown/Countdown Entertainment/One Times Square (home of the ball), we get to pull the strings on this extremely massive event and it never gets old.

Tell us about a past New Year’s Eve moment or memory in Times Square that is especially memorable for you.

GW: Wow, so many things come to mind. Top of mind with the pandemic, it is hard not to look at the past two years. When this many global eyeballs are looking at you. This event is about sending a message each year—hope for next year and things will get better. If you have experienced something great (a wedding, the birth of a child, a graduation), New Year’s Eve lets you reflect on those amazing moments.

The world needed this event, and we needed to make it happen. New Year’s Eve 2021 featured network broadcasts, live performances, and 40 families only in the Square. Pandemic heroes safely took in the event with their families.

What surprises can we expect to see this New Year’s Eve in Times Square?

GW: Well, you need to come or tune in—it would not be much of a surprise if I told you!

Are there any fun facts about Times Square NYE that guests, tourists, and locals may not know?

GW: My favorite is one that really shows what we try to make this event about, and that is inclusion. Yearround Times Square is a destination that welcomes anyone and everyone from all over the world. The same holds true on New Year’s Eve—for those who get to enjoy being doused by confetti, lots and lots of confetti.

What is the funniest or most unique challenge you have had to solve for a past New Year’s Eve?

GW: Some talent requests (no, I

NYC/MQ 8 NYC/ MQ

am not going to share those) would make you laugh.

What are your insider tips for people who want to make the most of New Year’s Eve in Times Square?

GW: Great question! Its starts with what you wear. Depending on the weather, dress warmly, and you can always peel back the layers. Waterproof clothes are crucial. I highly recommend bringing a portable charger or two. Keep your devices charged for a long day as you want to share all the goodness with those you love.

TIPS & TRICKS TO

HOSTING YOUR NEXT HOLIDAY PARTY

Union Square Hospitality Group Prepares You for the Holiday's

Food and drink are the main focal points of any gathering. At the New York Marriott Marquis, we turned to Union Square Hospitality Group, the organization behind the operations of all our restaurants and some of the most beloved dining establishments in the city. Here, they offer insight into effortless and elegant entertaining: which entails planning the menu, serving signature cocktails, and creating a warm and welcoming ambiance.

TIP 1: FEATURE DISHES THAT BRING COMFORT AND JOY.

For Bret Lunsford, Executive Chef of Blue Smoke Dish, the holidays are a time to evoke and create

fond memories around food. He says, “It’s not Thanksgiving for my family without a pan of cornbread dressing (stuffing if you are not from the South). I will always remember my granny on Thanksgiving morning, pulling the cornbread out of the oven wearing her cotton housedress with curlers in her hair and house slippers on her feet. It always made the room smell like Thanksgiving. It was always the perfect side and just as good the next day!”

TIP 2: BE STRATEGIC IN THE KITCHEN.

Union Square Café Executive

Chef Lena Ciardullo recommends that hosts can make it easier for

themselves with smart planning and shortcuts. When it comes to turkey, she says, “Do not bother with a wet brine. Seasoning larger pieces of meat ahead of time is important but handling a brine in a home fridge is a pain. Instead, season any large proteins (pork, whole chicken, turkey breasts) six hours to a night before cooking them, depending on their size.” “I usually use salt, a bit of granulated sugar, or brown sugar to mimic a wet brine, black pepper, and other seasonings that might work well with the final dish I am making. Be sure to store in your fridge in a gallon Ziplock bag or even a trash bag to avoid mess.

INSIDE SCOOP INTO

NYC HOLIDAY GALAS

Adding a little Pzazz

This season is all about celebrating and the holiday galas at this time of year make it even more special. At the New York Marriott Marquis, we are fortunate to experience and be a part of the thoughtful planning, creativity, care, and professionalism that go into these extraordinary events. Here’s an inside look at what it takes to rise to the occasion.

PUTTING ON THE SPECIAL TOUCHES

According to PJ Fuerstman, founder and creative director of the Naples, Florida-based entertainment and production company Pzazz Productions, a lot of foresight goes into planning and developing holiday galas to hone the client’s vision for the event. “This requires a blend of innovation, and consideration of the budget. Then it’s off to the races casting, designing, fabricating, and directing,” says

Fuerstman. As for location, nothing compares to the energy and excitement of New Year’s Eve in NYC at Times Square, shares Fuerstman, who has produced holiday events all around the world. “Over the past 25 years, it’s been so much fun to see the faces of the guests when the ball drops at midnight and the sky magically rains confetti.”

LASTING IMPRESSIONS

Everyone should be personally greeted by a representative of the holiday gala host. However, Fuerstman stresses the importance of creating memorable moments full of wonder.

“I love live performers at the entrance to establish that immediate moment of welcome and warmth,” she says. “Whether it’s an aerialist serving champagne from overhead or a trio of singers playfully flirting with guests, it’s about the experience.”

HOLIDAY CHEER AT THE NEW YORK MARRIOTT MARQUIS

As for venues for hosting NYC holiday galas and other events, the New York Marriott Marquis boasts the newly redesigned Broadway Lounge and

the Broadway Ballroom. Fuerstman happens to be a fan of the spaces saying, “I love the Broadway Lounge for a holiday party. The energy of Times Square is palpable, and the light of the city is almost all the décor you need!”

NYC/MQ 12 NYC/ MQ

“The Broadway Ballroom is a fabulous event space. The dramatic high ceiling with cool LED light fixtures is great for aerial acts or expansive décor. We’re

planning on icy winter trees elevated in the middle of the bars and food stations for several corporate holiday parties this season.”

5 TIPS FOR PLANNING A HOLIDAY GALA OR PARTY IN NYC

Start Planning Early. Venues fill up quickly in NYC, and vendors get busy. The earlier you start, the better your selection will be.

Choose the Right Venue for Your Event. Consider whether you want a blank canvas to create your unique experience or a more turnkey venue. Keep in mind that some venues come with a seasoned event team to support you in your planning, while others are raw space, and you’ll need to put together your team.

Make the Décor Immersive. Give guests comfortable places to convene with soft seating. And don’t forget that lighting goes a long way to set a mood. Fill the room with a great scent of good food or infuse peppermint or gingerbread into a dessert room.

Elevate the Food and Beverage. It should be plentiful, easily accessible, visually appealing, and offer unexpected elements. Avoid bar lines by considering passing drinks on trays upon arrival or cocktail activations.

Make Sure You Have

Enough

Support. Create a positive party vibe with good support and take a moment to enjoy the magic you’ve created.

Staple and Savory Jewish Cuisine

When visiting NYC for the holidays, be sure to go on a food tour for a taste of the best latkes and Jewish cuisine in the city. Here are a few dining destinations where you will find the comforting, crispy potato dish.

KATZ’S DELICATESSEN

Step inside NYC’s oldest deli on the corner of Houston and Ludlow on the Lower East Side. You will probably recognize this local institution from its cameo on When Harry Met Sally. However, people flock here for the food, including its tasty pastrami on rye sandwich and latkes cooked to perfection paired with apple sauce and sour cream on the side.

ÉPICERIE BOULUD

If it is from the kitchen of star Chef Daniel Boulud, you know the crispy potato latkes are top-notch. With three locations across the city, Lincoln Center, One Vanderbilt, and Westfield World Trade Center, you can have your pick of where to try their gourmet version out.

2ND AVENUE DELI

This local favorite, which bills itself as offering an authentic Jewish culinary experience, has two locations—Murray

Hill and the Upper East Side—to eat as many golden, fried latkes as you want. Also on the menu are restaurant specialties, such as the melt-in-your-mouth pastrami sandwich and super satisfying matzoh ball soup.

BARNEY’S

GREENGRASS

Since opening its doors in 1908, this Upper West Side restaurant continues to attract locals and visitors alike for delicacies such as its smoked sturgeon and other fish. During the holiday season, traditional potato latkes with hints of onion and a side of apple sauce are available to enjoy.

BREADS BAKERY

Known for its chocolate babka and other freshly baked treats, this beloved bakery with multiple locations across the city typically has a special menu for Hannukah. As for their culinary spin on latkes, they have traditional potato and a sweet

potato version and homemade cinnamon applesauce.

EDITH’S

What began as a pop-up is now thriving as two eateries in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. However, Edith’s Sandwich Counter on Lorimer Street is where you can delight in latkes with a dollop of crème fraiche and signature bagel sandwiches year-round.

RUSS & DAUGHTERS

This old-school, fourthgeneration, family-owned establishment has been around since 1914--and has three locations: its famous shop and newer Appretizing shop on the Lower East Side, and a Brooklyn establishment. Although appetizing lox and bagels put them on the map, handmade, small-batch latkes are worth a try and are available as single orders or in five- and 12-packs.
