THE MAGIC OF CELEBRATING THE NEW YEAR IN NEW YORK
All eyes are on the excitement that unfolds in Times Square as the world collectively says goodbye to the old and hello to the new. At the center of the action is the New York Marriott Marquis, and we recently had the opportunity to get an exclusive look from Gary Winkler, Vice President of Stakeholder Services & Signature Events at the Times Square Alliance, on what goes on behind the scenes on one of New York City’s biggest nights.
What makes Times Square the best place to celebrate New Year’s Eve?

Gary Winkler (GW): This is where it happens—the magical place where the famous ball drops. It is what we all grew up watching and what everyone today continues to see, whether it’s on TV or (now) online. Not only are millions of Americans watching what is happening in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, people from around their world have their eyes on that ball. For many, it is a bucket list moment to say, “I was there.” You know you are surrounded by others who share the same enthusiasm for the experience. The vibe is amazing, and the final hour of the year is like nothing you have been part of in your life. John Lennon’s “Imagine” is performed right before the ball drops and, at last, on this special night, the “world is one” together. As that sinks in your brain, 3,000 pounds of confetti floats down on all—there is truly nothing quite like it.
Tell us about the planning/production process of putting on the iconic New Year’s Eve event in Times Square each year.

GW: Well, the process is ongoing. The wrap-up extends a few months into the year, and the planning of the next one then gets underway. The event is quite complex in that we welcome any network to be a part of it. Unlike the Olympics, the Super Bowl, award shows, and other high-profile events, Times Square New Year’s Eve does not enter exclusive broadcast rights agreements. Our goal is to shine a global spotlight on the center of the universe (Times Square). So, we welcome any outlet to come and cover the event.
How does your team keep this event fresh and the best it can be each year?
GW: Working with many television outlets allows us to tap into relevant musical acts. Musical performances have always been a big part of this event.“Who will be performing this year?” is always of interest. Who will it be at this year’s event? You will have to wait and see.
We also look at relevant, timely global topics. A special guest each year presses the signal of lowering of the ball at 11:59 pm. A few names include Muhammad Ali, former President Bill Clinton, and Lady Gaga.
Additionally, the event continues to thrive through great partnerships. Kay Jewelers tell the story of LOVE that resonates with so many.
What does the process look like for pulling together a savvy team to execute this event on-site each year?
GW: Great question, as it takes an army to make it happen and working with the best of the best from networks to vendors to brilliant folks in the tech space. On top of that, we are not an arena. We are subject to late December NYC weather conditions, and “doors” are always open. In addition to the crew, we rely on our partnerships with the Mayor’s Office of Event Coordination, the New York Police Department, and the Department of Sanitation.
Tell us about you and your role putting on the world’s greatest New Year’s Eve party in Times Square.
GW: I like to think of myself as a conductor of a very large band. Collaborating with our partners at Jamestown/Countdown Entertainment/One Times Square (home of the ball), we get to pull the strings on this extremely massive event and it never gets old.
Tell us about a past New Year’s Eve moment or memory in Times Square that is especially memorable for you.
GW: Wow, so many things come to mind. Top of mind with the pandemic, it is hard not to look at the past two years. When this many global eyeballs are looking at you. This event is about sending a message each year—hope for next year and things will get better. If you have experienced something great (a wedding, the birth of a child, a graduation), New Year’s Eve lets you reflect on those amazing moments.
The world needed this event, and we needed to make it happen. New Year’s Eve 2021 featured network broadcasts, live performances, and 40 families only in the Square. Pandemic heroes safely took in the event with their families.
What surprises can we expect to see this New Year’s Eve in Times Square?
GW: Well, you need to come or tune in—it would not be much of a surprise if I told you!

Are there any fun facts about Times Square NYE that guests, tourists, and locals may not know?
GW: My favorite is one that really shows what we try to make this event about, and that is inclusion. Yearround Times Square is a destination that welcomes anyone and everyone from all over the world. The same holds true on New Year’s Eve—for those who get to enjoy being doused by confetti, lots and lots of confetti.
What is the funniest or most unique challenge you have had to solve for a past New Year’s Eve?
GW: Some talent requests (no, I am not going to share those) would make you laugh.
What are your insider tips for people who want to make the most of New Year’s Eve in Times Square?
GW: Great question! Its starts with what you wear. Depending on the weather, dress warmly, and you can always peel back the layers. Waterproof clothes are crucial. I highly recommend bringing a portable charger or two. Keep your devices charged for a long day as you want to share all the goodness with those you love.
