Holiday Season, No Two Tables Look—or Taste—the Same A Custom Approach to Holiday Catering at the New York Marriott Marquis

DAN'S DESK

LATE SUMMER REFLECTIONS: A CITY IN FULL SWING

Mid-summer in New York City is one of its finest chapters. The city hums with life, yet the mood softens—days linger, evenings stretch golden, and every block offers one more reason to pause. At the New York Marriott Marquis, we’ve always believed in being part of that rhythm. This season is no exception.

Just steps from our front doors, Bryant Park remains a beloved gathering place. Its summer calendar is filled with culture and community—live music, outdoor yoga, and Broadway in Bryant Park on select Thursdays, where stars of the stage bring their voices to the lawn. It’s one of the city’s most magical summer experiences.

For those less inclined to picnic on the grass, we offer something equally joyful but more climate controlled. Every Monday night through Labor Day, we screen family-favorite films on our indoor billboard—set against the dramatic backdrop of our 37-story atrium. Parents sip cocktails, kids snack and settle in, and the glow of the screen reflects on faces from around the world. It’s one of those

quietly special moments that reminds us: hospitality is about creating spaces where people feel something.

This summer, those feelings are colored by reflection. As we look ahead to fall, we also look back—because this year, we mark a milestone: our 40th anniversary. It’s a personal one for me. I joined Marriott before this hotel ever opened its doors. Back then, the Marquis was still just an idea—blueprints, scaffolding, and ambition. We gave tours in hard hats, walking clients up unfinished floors because the elevators weren’t yet operational. I remember wrapping meetings across the street at the old Howard Johnson’s—“the HoJo,” as we called it—where contracts were signed over coffee and cheeseburgers.

What we were building wasn’t just a hotel— it was a vote of confidence in Times Square. In the early 1980s, this neighborhood didn’t look like the thriving hub it is today. But Mr. Marriott saw its potential. He believed that a hotel in the heart of New York could help bring people back—to Broadway, to Midtown, to the lights and energy that make this place so extraordinary.

Before we opened in 1985, we marked the near-completion of the project in dramatic fashion. At our topping-off celebration in 1984, a 60x90-foot American flag— the largest free-flying flag in the world at the time—was unfurled in our atrium. Gershwin music played. Broadway star Karen Ziemba performed. And in true New York style, Mayor Koch declared that “42nd Street is the largest human creation since ancient Egypt… but 42nd Street is alive.”

Four decades later, we’re proud to still be part of a Times Square that welcomes millions of visitors each year from across the globe. It’s an ever-evolving stage—and we’re honored to play a small role in so many unforgettable New York moments.

As our 40th anniversary approaches this fall, we’ll be celebrating in a variety of ways—some nostalgic, some playful, and a few surprises we’ll keep under wraps for now. But most of all, we want to say thank you. For forty years, you’ve allowed us to be part of your stories. You’ve celebrated milestones here, launched ideas in our boardrooms, proposed in our rooftop restaurant, and introduced your children to the city from our rooms overlooking Times Square.

To our guests, partners, and the generations of travelers and event planners who’ve chosen to spend time with us—you’ve made this journey possible.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon—whether for

a summer evening in the city, a special celebration, or simply to see what’s next.

Wonderful Hospitality. Always.

PAST PRESENT 2025

J.W. Marriott, Jr. and New York Marriott Marquis architect, John C. Portman observing the hotel model during the construction phase in 1984.

When John Portman imagined the New York Marriott Marquis, he saw more than a hotel. He saw a self-contained city in the sky—a place to gather, to escape, and to experience New York in a completely new way.

“Mr. Marriott [J.W. Marriott, Jr., Executive Chairman of Marriott International, Retired] and the original architect, John Portman, had a vision. They saw that Times Square could be more than what it was and what it should be,” said Daniel Nadeau, Area General Manager. “They really just felt that a hotel could be more

than a hotel. It could bring a sense of community and bring people to this area, who had never considered staying here.”

Forty years later, that vision still soars—standing tall at the crossroads of the world, just as they imagined.

Did you know?

When the New York Marriott Marquis opened it 1985, it had already booked over 1 million reservations. It's well-timed debut, just ahead of the Jacob Javits Convention Center, secured tens of thousands of rooms nights and helped cement Times Square as a destination for major events.

“ Architecture is not about building a monument. It’s about creating a place where people feel good.
— John C. Portman

In 1984, the Marquis unveiled the world’s largest free-flying American flag—60 by 90 feet, weighing 450 pounds—as it hung high in our atrium for the topping-off ceremony.

A Custom Approach to Holiday Catering at the New York Marriott Marquis

At the New York Marriott Marquis, Union Square Events continues to redefine the catering experience, this time with a holiday lens. Known for its ability to seamlessly execute events of all sizes and styles, USE brings a flexible, seasonal, and chef-driven approach to holiday gatherings across the hotel’s expansive 100,000+ square feet of event space.

Every event is approached as a unique collaboration between the client, event team, and USE’s culinary leadership. With no fixed packages or preset menus, USE focuses on crafting highly customized experiences. Menus are built around seasonal ingredients sourced from local farms across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

This highly flexible approach is supported by USE’s Innovation Kitchen, a dedicated research and development space where new dishes are created, tested, and refined before being adapted for events of any scale. This capability ensures menus remain fresh, inventive, and perfectly tailored, whether for  a leadership dinner in an executive boardroom, a multi-room client celebration, or a ballroom holiday gala for thousands.

Small Gatherings

Boardroom lunches, VIP client dinners, team retreats (50+ guests)

Smaller-scale events offer the opportunity for deep customization, where every detail,

from menu to pacing and presentation, is thoughtfully designed to fit the occasion’s tone and intent. USE’s culinary team works directly with stakeholders to co-create experiences that feel personalized and intentional, whether it’s a seated multi-course dinner with curated wine pairings or a relaxed cocktail luncheon with passed canapés. This close collaboration ensures each menu is reflective of the client’s vision and the guest experience is consistently refined and elevated. Seasonal ingredients take center stage, such as delicata squash and whipped ricotta crostini drizzled with spiced honey, or a bright citrus and chicory salad that awakens the palate. Service is carefully tailored to enhance intimacy and flow, reflecting USE’s signature attention to hospitality details.

Mid-Sized Events

Cocktail receptions, company-wide celebrations, client mixers (50–300 guests)

Flexibility is essential for mid-sized holiday events, where a variety of service formats may be combined to support flow and engagement.

USE designs dynamic programs with interactive stations, passed hors d’oeuvres, and shareable platters, all fully customizable to the client’s objectives and space logistics. The ability to test and adapt new menu concepts in the Innovation Kitchen enables USE to introduce fresh ideas that resonate with guests while maintaining operational efficiency and quality at scale. Passed bites such as pomegranate-lacquered duck skewers and celery root tartlets are curated for

ease, while seasonal dessert stations offer playful finishes. The service style is fluid, allowing for networking and celebration alike, while adapting to the tone and priorities of the client.

Large-Scale Productions

Full-company galas, multi-floor productions, milestone celebrations (300+ guests)

When an event demands scale and precision, Union Square Events brings an unparalleled level of operational expertise and creative vision. Whie the hotel manages lighting, décor, and thematic elements, USE focuses on delivering a culinary experience that can flex across multiple rooms and formats. Multiple food stations offer a wide variety of seasonal flavors and chef-led activations, while signature dessert bars spotlight seasonal ingredients like red kuri squash panna cotta and artisan peppermint bark towers. Every element is designed to create a memorable, flawless guest experience that embodies USE’s philosophy of Enlightened Hospitality on the grandest scale, it’s hospitality at its most ambitious.
