BEST LATKES
The Premier Latkes in New York City
Where to Find This Popular Hanukkah Staple and Savory Jewish Cuisine. When visiting NYC for the holidays, be sure to go on a food tour for a taste of the best latkes and Jewish cuisine in the city. Here are a few dining destinations where you will find the comforting, crispy potato dish.
KATZ’S DELICATESSEN
Step inside NYC’s oldest deli on the corner of Houston and Ludlow on the Lower East Side. You will probably recognize this local institution from its cameo on When Harry Met Sally. However, people flock here for the food, including its tasty pastrami on rye sandwich and latkes cooked to perfection paired with apple sauce and sour cream on the side.
EPICERIE BOULUD
If it is from the kitchen of star Chef Daniel Boulud, you know the crispy potato latkes are top-notch. With three locations across the city, Lincoln Center, One Vanderbilt, and Westfield World Trade Center, you can have your pick of where to try their gourmet version out.
2ND AVENUE DELI
This local favorite, which bills itself as offering an authentic Jewish culinary experience, has two locations—Murray Hill and the Upper East Side—to eat as many golden, fried latkes as you want. Also on the menu are restaurant specialties, such as the melt-in-your-mouth pastrami sandwich and super satisfying matzoh ball soup.
BARNEY’S GREENGRASS
Since opening its doors in 1908, this Upper West Side restaurant continues to attract locals and visitors alike for delicacies such as its smoked sturgeon and other fish. During the holiday season, traditional potato latkes with hints of onion and a side of apple sauce are available to enjoy.
BREADS BAKERY
Known for its chocolate babka and other freshly baked treats, this beloved bakery with multiple locations across the city typically has a special menu for Hannukah. As for their culinary spin on latkes, they have traditional potato and a sweet potato version and homemade cinnamon applesauce.
EDITH’S
What began as a pop-up is now thriving as two eateries in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. However, Edith’s Sandwich Counter on Lorimer Street is where you can delight in latkes with a dollop of crème fraiche and signature bagel sandwiches year-round.
RUSS & DAUGHTERS
This old-school, fourth-generation, family-owned establishment has been around since 1914--and has three locations: its famous shop and newer Appretizing shop on the Lower East Side, and a Brooklyn establishment. Although appetizing lox and bagels put them on the map, handmade, small-batch latkes are worth a try and are available as single orders or in five- and 12-packs.
