SARAH MORRISON HOLLEY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL NURSING

“Nursing in Nigeria is very different to that of the UK. Instead of simply putting your hand on the necessary drugs or equipment , you need to think of alternatives they were not available for treatment. But one of the main differences is being able to openly share the love of Jesus with those in your care every day. To me that’s where we fall down with our care of patients here.”

DR REBECCA DODDS KIKUYU HOSPITAL MEDICINE

“One of the benefits of a medical career is the opportunities to travel and work abroad. My experience of serving as a medic in a low resource setting has been challenging and rewarding. I’ve been exposed to medical conditions, social conditions, and limitations which I’ve never come across in a developed country, broadening my medical knowledge and experience.”

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive' - Acts 20:35

There is no greater privilege than being able to use the gifts Christ has given you to serve Him than by serving others. By choosing to do your elective with Mission Africa, you will not only get the opportunity to work in the hospitals, but you will find joy in sharing the love of Jesus through serving the sick. Once you have decided to do your elective with us what does this look like practically?

ABOUT:

Healthcare standards in Kenya are slightly more advanced than the equivalent hospitals in Nigeria, but the need for Mission staff and investment is still high. Mission Africa has established a partnership agreement with the Presbyterian Church of East Africa and we can offer placements in PCEA Kikuyu Hospital. Services include: outpatients, maternal and child health, casualty (emergency room), a busy operating theatre, dental unit and an ART programme (dealing with HIV AIDS). The hospital also has an Eye Unit, which provides highly specialised ophthalmic care throughout East Africa. Also, on site is an orthopaedic rehabilitation unit with an active surgical programme. Students are invited to participate in morning prayers, outpatient clinics, casualty and to assist in the operating theatre.

HOLLEY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Situated in rural Kogi State, if you are planning an elective, you will certainly get plenty of hands on experience here.

ABOUT:

The hospital buildings and staff accommodation are in one large compound making it a safe, close knit community with a wonderful Christian atmosphere.

“If you are planning an elective you will certainly get plenty of hands on experience - running clinics and even some surgery!” Rosy -

Founded in the 1940’s in response to the needs of those suffereing from leprosy, Holley Memorial is recognised by the Nigerian Government as a place of excellence in the treatment of leprosy.

Today the hospital has grown to be a medium sized general hospital, providing specialist services in surgery, maternity and obstetrics, orthopaedics, ophthalmics and caring for an increasing number suffering from TB and HIV/AIDS. An outpatients department cares for a growing population. Alongside all this, faithful witness is given to Jesus Christ through word and action.

FOR HOW LONG:

The hospital is suitable for up to 3-4 elective students at any one time. For projects and reports it is not usually suitable for statistical studies, as there is not a broad enough patient pool. This hospital has hosted numerous electives over the years and is a good option to experience African medicine.

ACCOMODATION:

Accommodation and meals can be provided at the hospital guesthouse on the grounds of the hospital.
