A short summary for those who do not understand Maltese. This booklet offers an overview of the activities organised by MRC Naxxar Middle School. This is an important transition period from our students’ primary daystosecondaryschoolingwhichleadsthemtotheend of their compulsory school age. We aim to inculcate values in them that lead them to continue with their study or training beyond compulsory age. So many people work hard to see these students through these two years. Staff at the Ministry for Education, at Maria Regina College, at school. The Head and Assistant Heads, Heads of Department, teachers and LSEs, clerical and ancillary staff, the School Council, all do their best, with one main aim, that of educating our students. Parents are very important in this process, and their input and support to the school can lead to a synergy for the best of their children. There might be a couple of students who begin to show lack of respect to themselves, their parents, their peers and the school. Together we always strive to help them go back on the right track. A school is amicrocosmofsociety, thereforethisisexpected, albeit notaccepted.Togetherweaimtobecreative, innovative and professional in all that we do, so that we reach our main aim of giving them a holistic education. Għandna diversi ħaddiema fi ħdan il-Kulleġġ Maria Regina, fosthom lUffiċċjal Edukattiv għall-Kurrikulu, il-ħaddiema klerikali u amministrattivi, tim psiko-soċjali espert f’diversi oqsma, f’din l-iskola mgħejjuna wkoll minn counsellor talBlossomuħafnaoħrajn.

A SHORT NOTE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
The scholastic year 2022-23 has been a year dedicated to academicteachingandlearningbutithasalsobeenayear imbued with diverse activities, colours, smiles and a wholesome celebration of our staff and students’ talents and skills. This comes as no surprise since our school communityismadeupof760students,200staffmembers and 47 nationalities. As one can expect, leading and logistically managing these large numbers is indeed a challenging task but I am proud to say that together with our school’s senior leadership team of assistant heads and headsofdepartment, allourteachersandlearningsupport educators, our clerical and minor staff, we have managed todoagreatjob.
This year we also managed to organise our first Human LibraryEventonalargescale.Wehad22guestspeakersall with different backgrounds and life journeys to share with our students and staff members. It was a very enriching experienceforourstudentsasitofferedthemanexcellent opportunity to meet our guest speakers in person and ask them questions related to the theme presented. So many curious faces, so many questions and so many smiles. This event was an excellent example of how learning can be mademorerelevanttoourstudentswithoutthetraditional useofatextbook.
The school also held its first Christmas Pantomine entitled ‘SnowWhite’.Althoughitinvolvedseriouscommitmentand many rehearsals, it was a wonderful activity that not only bonded the staff members involved but additionally, it served the purpose of celebrating our staff’s diverse talents.Onceagain, itwassoencouragingandsatisfyingto see students and other staff members laughing and singing along with the Pantomine’s mimes and songs. The same can be said for this year’s Celebration Day Musical, ‘It’s the End of the World’ which was an excellent opportunity for so many different students to confidently showcase their talents and increase their confidence in frontofpeople, askillthatisvitalfortoday’sglobalsociety. This scholastic year also saw our first Erasmus+ Partnership Project with two other countries, Italy and Greece. The Project ‘Music beyond Borders’ enabled 11 studentsfromourschooltogoabroadinanexchangevisit to Chania, Greece to rehearse and participate in a musical orchestra between the 3 countries titled ‘The Rhythm of the Mediterranean Sea’. It involved commitment and long rehearsals, but it was an excellent opportunity for our students to integrate with students from other countries, learning about new cultures, respecting, and collaborating with others towards a common goal. It was a memorable experience for all. We look forward to our next group of studentstovisitTodiinItalynextscholasticyear.
Last but not least, the Students’ Council organised a very interactive Animal Awareness Week during which both students and staff members enjoyed interacting with a variety of animals and learnt more about taking care of animalsaswellastheservicethatcanbeofferedtopeople withspecialneeds.
Looking back at this past year, I realise how easy it is for a Head of School to get lost in the mundane bureaucratic dailyadministrativetasks. However, itissuchactivitiesand events that make a school come alive and I am satisfied that as a school we have managed to offer such essential andrelevantopportunitiestoourstudents.
Much appreciation also goes to Mr Patrick Decelis, Head College Network as well as our School Council who have continuouslyofferedsomuchsupportandideastomaking our school a second home to our students. Together we have achieved so much, and I look forward to another fruitfulandsuccessfulscholasticyear.

STUDENTS’ COUNCIL 2022 -2023
Students had the opportunity to participate in a democratic election to elect the members of the Students’ Council for 2022-2023. Our students had a glimpse of how an election is carried out. The voting process took place in the hall which looked like an election room. Photos of candidates were exhibited and after privately voting for their preferred candidates, studentshadtoinserttheirfoldedvoteinasealedboxat thecentreoftheroom.
On Monday 13th March, student members of the Students’ Council together with the educators in charge, had the opportunity to spend few hours at RMJ’s Horse Rescue in Siggiewi. They learned about the hard work carried out at RMJ. They had the opportunity to help with some voluntary work under the guidance of one of the volunteers. This day helped them gather insight and experience first hand the hard work and dedication required to work with the rescued horses. Getting to know the stories behind some of the horses’ tough life before they were rescued was heartbreaking. This was thebeginningofavastprogrammetheStudents’Council havepreparedfortheAnimalAwarenessWeek.

In April, the Students' Council members, under the supervision of their teachers, organised a whole week dedicated to the love of animals and to appreciate how importantanimalsareinourlives.Thefirsttwodayswere dedicated to animals that assist humans throughout their life either for therapy purposes or to carry out their work. The year 7 students were addressed by members of the police canine and mounting section. Here students understood better how valuable animals areforsomepeopletoperformanimpeccablejob.
The second part of our Animal Awareness week was dedicated to the care that animals need. All year 8 students have been addressed by Mr Farrugia, a representativefromtheministryforagriculture, fisheries andanimalrights, abouttheimportanceoftakingcareof animals, petsorstrays.Theyhavebeengiveninformation about good practices and the role of the Animal Welfare. Our student members of the students' council had the opportunity to hold an online information session with all their peers to explain what they have learnt about animals from the books they read. This was a collaborative event between the students' council and thelibraryduringbookweek.
The third part of our animal awareness week was dedicated to the blessing of the animals that visited our school on Friday. It was a wonderful experience to see so many happy faces! Our students had a casual day and they contributed to collect a donation for RMJ. A total of EUR500 was donated to RMJ thanks to the support of many students, parents and members of staff. THE MOONSTONE LOCKET
by Emma Cuschieri
As she walked down the stairs to the kitchen, Luna realised that her house was unexpectedly quiet. Usually the morning was chaos, father making breakfast, mother setting assignments for Luna to complete at home, since she was home schooled, and the cats yowling for breakfast. Today it was... still. Luna walked into the living room to find her father so he could make her some breakfast. No one was in there. Blinking a few times, Luna took a good look around. Her eyes bulged out. The place was an utter disaster! The books from the shelf were scattered on the floor, their pages ripped out. All the photos that sat on the mantlepiece were smashed on the floor. Luna was about to sit downbutjumpedupimmediatelywhenshefoundthesofaswereslashedopenwithallthestuffingcomingout.Luna ranintothekitchen, whichwasjustasdisastrous, platesandbowlssmashedonthefloor, cupboardsflungopen, and foodthrownoutofthefridge.
“Mother?!” she called. No answer. “Father?!” No such luck. She also called her cats, just for good measure but they didn’t answer either. Panic started rising in her head. What had happened to her house? Where were her parents? Had someone come in? Suddenly, the house didn’t feel safe anymore, the only place that did was her room in the attic.Sothat’swhereshewent.Onceshewasbackinherroom,shecurleduponherbeanbagandhadagoodthink. Someone had definitely come into her house last night. But who? And why? And how come she didn’t hear them? How come they didn’t find her? Then she realized, the passageway to the attic was so small, no one could come up! Andeveniftheycould, thetrapdoorwassocamouflagedintotheceiling, theywouldn’tevenbeabletofindit! Lunaalwayswonderedwhyherparentsencouragedhertosleepintheattic.Itwasalmostasiftheyknewthismight happen, and they wanted to keep her safe. The thought struck her. Why else would they want her to sleep in the attic? It wasn’t as if they didn’t have enough rooms, there was a spare one downstairs. If they knew this would happen, then they should have told her! Maybe, they left a clue for me. Luna thought. It couldn’t be hidden downstairsbecausesomeonecouldfindit.Ithadtoberighthereinherownroom.Butwhere?Lunacheckedallover her room in all the hiding places. There must be somewhere I’ve never checked, Luna thought. She jumped up and started running round her room, checking under beds, in wardrobes, around her desk, everywhere. After about ten minutes of looking with no luck, she sank into her beanbag feeling crestfallen. It had to be somewhere almost invisible...orcamouflaged.Thewordhither.Itmadeherthinkofthetrapdoor,thatwascamouflaged.Lunalookedup attheceiling.Theplasterfromonesidewaspeelingoff.
At first, Luna didn’t take much notice, but looking at it again, she got more and more curious. She grabbed a chair that sat by her desk and heaved it onto her bed which she (with quite some difficulty) shoved under the spot where the crack was. She climbed up on the chair and carefully peeled off the plaster. It came out in her hand almost immediately. The wooden boards underneath it looked normal, and Luna was about to climb back down when she realised something queer. There, between the gaps of the plain old wood was the corner of something that looked like paper, poking out. Luna snatched it out from between the wooden boards. It was an envelope. She jumped off the chair and sat on her bed looking at the plain, innocent envelope. With trembling fingers, Luna ripped it open and stuckherhandintoseewhatwasinside.
She pulled out two things. The first thing was a tiny parcel wrapped in tissue. The second was a note. Luna unfolded the paper and read; “Dear Luna, by the time you receive this letter, we will be gone. We could not explain but the locketcan.Believeit,whatitwilltellyouistrue.Itwilltellyouthetruthaboutyourself.”
Taking a deep breath, Luna ripped open the tissue paper and revealed the golden talisman. She put it in the palm of herhandandtookagoodlookatit.Itwastimetofindoutwhatreallyhappened.Whoshereallywas.
Luna dug her nails into the side of the locket and with a satisfying ‘click’ it popped open. A picture fell into her lap. She picked it up and gave it a good look. It was her. There was no doubt about that. The same coal black hair, the same silver eyes, the same half smile she puts on when someone takes a picture of her. She was sitting on the lap of an elegant lady who was sitting on a throne. There was also a man in the picture, grinning broadly at the camera. Thesepeoplewerenotherparents.Lunahadneverseenthembefore.Maybetheyweresomedistantrelatives?Luna flippedthepictureoverandreadwhatwasontheback.

The true Spirit of Christmas, video taken during our visit at St Vincent De Paul where our Ethics students shared someChristmaskindnessandhappinesswiththeElderly.
https://fb.watch/hBy4LqVShf/
If eyes could speak then, one could easily say that our visit to St Vincent de Paul Residence was a success. Just before Christmas, a group of Ethics Students together with Teachers and Learning Support Educators went on a visit to an Elderly's home. It was a lovely experience and happiness could be seen in everyone's eyes. The Elderly sang with us and although some of them were bedridden, they really enjoyed it. We gave them Christmas cardspreparedbythestudents.
Kindness is so rewarding! One fine morning, Year 8 students of Ethics were addressed by Isabelle & Hazel from 'TheMaltaHumanRightsCentre.'
They explored the function and process of discrimination, onboththeinterpersonalandsocietallevels.
They discussed specific incidents of antigypsyism, antisemitism, discrimination against LGBTIQ+ and racism, using as a starting point the thoughts and experiences of five young people. They gained insight into the terms used to describe different forms of discrimination. The students were challenged to reflect on who has influence in situations where discrimination occurs and what they themselves would advise in a particular case. They worked with a model called the ‘Discrimination machine’. This breaks down aspects of discrimination: how we see ‘other people’, how grouping and judging people is part of discriminationandwhattheeffectsofdiscriminationare.
In March, all students taking Ethics were addressed by Silvia, from Island Sanctuary. Students listened to stories about abandoned animals attentively, especially the story about 'Zoya', a dog abandoned at Island Sanctuary where it stayed for 4 years until it was happily reunited with her family.
Students understood that a pet is for life and a commitment.
The Ethics Department is proud of all students and know thattheywillbecomeresponsiblepetownersoneday.

Xogħol l-għalliem kien li wara l-10 sekondi mogħtija għall-kitba ta’ kull kelma mill-kompetituri u lanaliżi tal-ġudikanti, ifisser ir-raġuni għaliex il-kelma tinkiteb b’dak il-mod; intelligenti dejjem għax “i” etimoloġika u mhijiex tal-leħen. Ir-rebbieħa talkompetizzjoni ngħataw ċertifikat. Permezz tal-attività, listudenti għarfu l-valuri tar-responsabbiltà, ilkollaborazzjoni u l-inklużjoni. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
The Department of Religious Education at Naxxar Middle School, under the guidance of Ms Alison Tanti Micallef (Assistant Head), seeks to instil moral and religious values in our students, so essential in this phase of growing up. Christmas is always a special time of the year, much awaited by staff and students alike. For the second year in a row, the traditional procession with the statue of Baby Jesus was held around the school grounds. Students dressed up as Biblical characters related to the Nativity, joined the procession accompanied by the sweet music of Christmas carols
This year, for the first time, Christmas Mass was organised for all students at the Naxxar Parish Church. This required the help and support of staff members, as students walked their way to the church. Mass was celebrated by the school’s spiritual counsellor, Fr Alfred Vassallo. Two students also recited the traditional Christmas sermon. We thank Mr Vince Taliana for coordinating and the staff for making this activity a success.
Lent and Easter are quick to follow, and Lenten talks were this year conducted in the school hall by newly ordained priest Fr Osmar Baldacchino. The two talks, one for year 7 and one for year 8, were wellreceivedbythelargenumberstudents.
Our Lady of Sorrows, as usual, was also celebrated, this year more than ever as the school invested in a beautiful statue which was carried around the school in a procession accompanied by band marches played by a group of students from the neighbouring GiovanniCurmiHigherSecondarySchool.
Apart from these activities, this year saw the finalisation of the prayer room which can be found in Block C. Ms Attard Mintoff assisted the Department in this project.

We thank Ms Corinne Cilia for supporting all these activities and initiatives, as well as Fr Alfred Vassallo who apart from helping in the organisation of the events, was also available for confession and assistance of both students and teachers.
Another project was the restoration of a sculpture of Our Lady by the late renowned sculptor Ganni Bonnici which used to be found at the entrance of Block A. This was carried out with the help of Mr Carmel Bonello, Art teacher.
