Editor's Note We are proud to present the 6th edition of our school magazine. It presents a selection of activities that took place throughout this scholastic year. It is a true celebration of the amazing work our students have been doing. This year 2020 is not a normal one. The Covid-19 pandemic has isolated each and every one of us and kept us away from each other. Therefore the need to keep in touch in some way or another has increased. This is another way of doing so, and looking back on the big achievements of this school. So many endeavours from so many people. All the staff and the students

work collaboratively, thus promoting educator-to-educator learning. In such a manner it invests in educators who ultimately share the practice to improve student development and standards. Our College regards students as leaders and contributors to the improvement of learning and teaching. It also intends to challenge students’

independent learning.

The operational core is the Professional teaching going one in there...and obviously the marvellous learning since that is what we all aim for. Therefore I have to show my full appreciation for each and every member of the staff. Well done and keep up the good work. You make me proud to be leading such a College with a Middle School that offers a great transition from the Primary to the Secondary. Parents at the school are so co-operative that it makes it a pleasure to work there. The School Leadership Team is to be lauded for its proactivity and professionality. I wish to thank the previous Head of School Mr Lino Borg for nurturing the school for the first years since its inception. It is definitely not easy to start from scratch. Now the school has been handed on to Ms Corinne Cilia who has continued making inroads with great Creativity, Innovation and Professionality in line with the College vision. We look forward to meet our students at school in the next scholastic year. Take care and stay safe. Patrick Decelis B.Ed.(Hons), M.Sc. Educ. Lead. (Leicester) Head College Network

A MESSAGE BY THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Welcome to this year's first online edition of the school magazine. Due to the Covid19 pandemic, it was not possible to produce the hardcopy version but this did not stop us from wanting to celebrate our school's various events and activities which took place till the 12th March before all schools in Malta closed. We are a dynamic multicultural school community and we value different opinions, cultures and religions. This is reflected in our diverse activities and events which are all aimed at promoting respect, creativity, positivity and inclusivity. But most of all, we enjoy organising such activities and events as we believe that they bring us all closer together as students, teachers and parents. They also help equip our students with lifelong collaborative and decision-making skills which reinforce the teaching and learning in our classes since as a school we believe that teaching and learning goes beyond the boundaries of a classroom. I invite you to enjoy our online magazine and as you scroll through the pages, you will probably notice one thing in particular. That we are all stronger when together! Enjoy. Corinne Anne Cilia  B. Pharm (Hons), PGCE, MEd (Educational Leadership), Master in Gestalt Psychotherapy Head of Maria Regina College Middle School Naxxar

Mission: In recognizing our multicultural community, we strive to provide a safe and friendly environment which is conducive to quality teaching of all stakeholders to empower our students to become better world citizens.

THE SCHOOL STUDENTS' COUNCIL School Students' Council is a democratic council. On the 10th of January, Year 7 students were elected by an election to join Year 8’s members. Through an effective and democratic student council, students become involved in their school communities and make their voices heard in matters that affect their lives. Schools benefit from having student councils through the promotion of inclusion, equality and respect. The members were invited to take part in a Team building training session at Aġenzija Żgħażagħ to prepare them to work together. The council meets regularly on weekly bases, where they discuss issues and new ideas. This year council planned to do many projects but unfortunately, few were actually done, such as pet food collection, sold flowers on Valentine’s Day and helped during parent’s evening and parent’s day.

OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY Our year at the library was sadly cut short this year. However, that doesn’t mean everything stopped. Our main campaign this year to teach students how to access the online services provided by Malta Libraries proved more useful than we had ever imagined as we were suddenly stuck at home. For those students who missed out on the lesson, have a look at the instructions in our Easy Access to Malta Libraries Online article in this magazine, so that you too can learn how to borrow books online. Our other main focus this year was on the acquisition of more and more books for our library to make our collection even more varied and up to date. Apart from updating our fiction and non-fiction collections both in English and Maltese this year, we have been busy increasing the selection of books pertaining to each and every subject taught at our school. This means that there will be a wider selection of books in all the foreign languages taught at our school, and books about many of the topics covered in all the other subjects. In this way students will be able to read more in depth about topics they learn in class and work on projects and carry out research related to their studies easily. Finally, we couldn’t miss out on celebrating World Book and Copyright Day this year on the 23rd of April, even though we were stuck at home. We asked our students to take the reading challenge and send us pictures of themselves reading at home. It was great to see our students reading at home.

OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY “Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.” Mason Cooley This quote is so pertinent at this moment in our lives when we have to stay indoors to stay safe. We have itchy feet. We want to go out, meet our relatives and friends, be out in nature, travel and do all the things that we love to do out of the house, but we can’t. Reading can help us by taking us away through our imagination to all those places we dream of going and giving us the ability to experience all the things we crave. From the comfort and safety of our sofa! Whether it is school, an adventure, some place in nature, a fantasy world, a time in the past, wherever you’d like to go, there’s a book that can take you there. Here are some suggestions of classic stories, recommended for your age group, to help you find just the right book to take you where you wish to go.

DAILY MILE

Every day the daily mile is held in our school from 8am to 8.15am were students walk or jog around the block and the teacher takes note of how many laps they do. At the end of the month these are added and positive points are given to all those students who do more than 20 laps a month. Also about 4 medals are given each month to those students who do the most laps in that month. There are also a number of helpers who help out by keeping the line and putting cones and giving bibs. In the daily mile students benefit both physically and emotionally as it starts their day on a good note and positively. The weather in Malta also generally helps as it is an outdoor activity.

PEBBLE PAINTING

This club has been a great success amongst our students. I never refused any who wanted to join since I truly believe that this activity would highly motivate our students to unwind and express themselves through painting and art. And I ended up with 52 students wanting to come over during break time! The objectives for this group are to combine creativity and individualism to create a beautiful piece of art that will encourage students for years to come to be true to themselves. This project would be dispersed upon 3 years. Obviously students needed to collect loads of pebbles, but the School Management Team provided all other staff needed, like acrylic paints and paint brushes, and an enormous room for our perusal. I am sure that our objectives would be fully reached and our beautiful school would be more colourful than ever before once the project is finished!

MISSIO COLLECTION

During the mid-day breaks a number of students were collecting used stamps, wool, cork tops and used mobile and used greeting cards for the missions and people in need. The used mobile cards and stamps are given to Missio office and are sold to stamp and mobile cards collectors.

The wool is used by people in Peru were they do scarves, hats, gloves etc because it can get very cold there.

With the cork tops crafts are done by a boy who has special needs and is in a wheelchair to help him in his hobby. With the used greeting cards other cards are done by a man with special needs to collect funds for charity. A number of students contributed to this altruistic activity and were volunteering the mid-day breaks to collect them. This activity helps students to think about other people in need and to re-use materials for a good cause.

ACTIVITY AT THE MIGRANT LEARNERS’ UNIT

On Monday 3rd of February the class 8.3 went to the Migrant Learners Unit to do an activity with the year 3 and year 4 classes following an initiative undertaken by the committee in charge of Gifted and Talented students. Our students split into four groups and each group prepared a lesson either in Maths, Maltese, English or Science. The Maltese group decided to do a lesson about animals. They prepared a worksheet, a presentation/quiz, plus some colouring as resources. The English group decided to deliver a lesson about colours and apart from preparing a worksheet for colouring and a powerpoint, they also prepared a game with bottle caps. The Maths group decided to do a lesson about 2-D Shapes. Apart from preparing a worksheet and a powerpoint, they also did a treasure hunt in which the students had to find the hidden 2-D shapes and put them in their respective team’s hoop. The Science group prepared a lava lamp experiment. The migrant learners had an opportunity to participate in the experiment as well. It was a fruitful activity for both groups of students and this could only be possible after a lot of co-ordination and preparation.

SCHOOL CLUBS SPANISH CLUB In the Spanish Club the students are given the chance to learn more about the Spanish culture and practice what they learn during the Foreign Language lessons. This year the students were exposed to some curiosities about the Spanish people and their customs, like for example: they learnt that in Spain there are 101,397 bars because Spaniards like to go to a bar after work to meet friends and nibble something. Furthermore, we saw from where Tapas originated and subsequently a session was dedicated for the students to prepare their own Tapas with Spanish savouries. While other times, in order to engage them and encourage them use the Spanish language we play Bingo, Hangman or Bowling.

ENGLISH

This year, the teachers of English worked extremely hard to adapt to the changes in the curriculum, while still providing enjoyable learning experiences for our students. Teachers constantly organised activities through which students can learn while having fun. Some English classes participated in the ‘Foodbank Lifeline Foundation Reverse Advent Calendar’. Every day, a student was nominated to bring one food item to be placed in the foodbank box. This was a wonderful way for everyone to get involved in helping the less fortunate at this special time of year. All students needed to do to participate in the Reverse Advent Calendar is grab a box and, every day from the 1st to the 24th December, place one nonperishable food item in it. At the end of the 24 days, students prepared a 7-day food pack ready to feed people who desperately needed their help.

On the 18th November 2019 some of our year 7 students participated in the Young Reporters for the Environment, litter less campaign event. The main aim of this activity was to carry out investigations on local environmental issues and propose solutions through investigative reporting and photojournalism.

ETHICS A glimpse of our Ethics classrooms

During our lessons our aim is to establish the value of the tool of conceptual analysis in moral argumentation mainly through discussions. The notion of a valid argument as distinct from an invalid argument is introduced and the students are eventually expected to give evidence detailed enough to sustain their arguments. We speak of a right and its meaning, and explore how it is used in everyday life; legal, political, social, etc. as well as moral or human, with the students. This helps to make them see the difference between what truly has the status of a right and what is merely desired, wished for, or wanted, and what should not count for a right.

ETHICS

Members of JEF Malta were invited to our school to give interactive lessons to Ethics students. JEF is a non-partisan youth NGO and student organization within the University of Malta. Internationally, it forms part of JEF Europe, a trans-partisan movement and NGO found in over 35 countries. JEF Malta is carrying out a project named Europe at School. During the session our Ethics students were informed about EU Human Rights, Advantages of the EU and EU Institutions. Considering that as youths they will, in a few years, be able to participate in the national and European electoral process, it is of vital importance that they learn about the functions, structure, and decision-making process of the European Union in a fun and engaging manner. By doing this, students are encouraged to be active citizens who are well aware of the political scene and this helps to prepare them to be responsible future voters.

PSCD Personal Challenges: Outstanding Achievement

Many times, we start our lessons determined to just get our prepared work done. We forget that students come to class with their own thoughts, reflections, questions, and motivation to take challenges. Creating opportunities to meet the demand for such Higher Order thinking levels can be surprising! Some students actually love it and want to show you that ‘they can’! This is what happened in the opening 10 minutes ‘sharing time’ last February. Some students asked questions that resulted from their reflections on previous lessons. The issue raised was a complex one that involved Stereotypes, Media, Culture and Perception! Attempting to discuss such areas at Year 7 level was a daunting task, but the students wanted it, took the challenge, and they understood it! Outstanding! Students are truly amazing!

HISTORY

The Black Death and the Corona Virus – an Empathy exercise?

History students in Year 8 study the topic of the Black Death which took place in the middle of the 14th century, 1347-1352. It was a devastating global epidemic of bubonic plague arriving in Europe in October 1347, when ships from the Black Sea docked at the port of Messina in Sicily. Most sailors aboard the ships were dead while those still alive were gravely ill and covered in black swellings. The Sicilian authorities quickly ordered the ships out of the harbour, but it was too late and over the following 5 years the Black Death killed more than 20 million people in Europe, almost one-third of the population of Europe. With the onset of COVID19 outbreak across the world and eventually in the Maltese Islands in 2020, students could relate, to a very small fraction, with people living at the time of the Black Death. Things such as closure of ports, the fear of shortage of provisions, increased ill-feeling towards foreigners and social distancing maybe be somewhat common. However, nothing compares to the immediate effects of the Black Death such as the high number of deaths, the killing of the Jews blamed with spreading the plague, the flagellants walking along the village streets whipping themselves for the forgiveness of sins, the abandonment of others in need, the killing of animals, the devastating effect on the economy and the mass burials, among others. The long-term effects of that outbreak in the following centuries were humongous. One Historical Skill that students learn throughout the year is the concept of Historical Empathy. Such a skill can be defined as the ability of putting yourself in the shoes of a person or group of people who lived in the past. Historical Empathy goes beyond the simple recalling of facts. Students are able to describe how people at the time felt, thought, how they acted, why they acted in a certain way and what consequences they might have faced. All of these are neither set in a vacuum nor can they be placed in today’s context, but have to be merged into the unique historical and social context of the time under study. The topic of the Black Plague offers the perfect platform to acquire such a skill as it had a wide effect on almost every aspect of life. Empathizing with the people of the Black Death cannot be achieved by simply understanding how people are living through the days of the Corona Virus. Only by reading and analysing our History that we are able to get a good look at what really took place and then be able to empathise with the people living back then. If you ask me … the Corona Virus is probably a walk in the park when compared to the Black Plague of 1348, nevertheless it has left an everlasting mark on our lives and on our history. Outing to Playcon A group of 44 students attended the Playcon, Malta’s first Game Development and Esports Expo at MFCC where they took part in several workshops and had the opportunity to experience different games, virtual reality and simulations.

The workshops that our students have participated in were Invent 3D, GIF Booth, Qlash House and World Pro Racing. During the Qlash House workshop they had the opportunity to meet a professional Qlash player. When asked how many hours a professional plays daily he answered that it is a misconception that the more we play, the better we become. In fact, he told them that he plays for no longer than four hours daily. There should be a balance between play, study, physical activity as well as living a healthy lifestyle. A professional Qlash player must be prepared both physically and mentally, must be updated all the time, act quickly, understand changes and adapt accordingly. Another interesting discussion that came up was about how many years a player’s career would last. This depends on the type of game. However, it is approximately ten years. When the career ends, a player can study and turn his career into something else like a coach, sports journalist or even a news caster / commenter. He advised the students to balance the passion for games, eat well, exercise, lead a healthy lifestyle as well as study.

Digital literacy workshops  On the 6th of March 2020, our school was invited to participate in the Digital Literacy workshops held at Hamurn Centre. These workshops provided an opportunity for students (Class 7.5) to use innovative technologies. Students participated in three different workshops.

During the first session, students experimented with VR headsets, where they engaged in different augmented and virtual reality educational games. In the second workshop, students explored a program called Canava. Students were provided with model examples to enable them to handle innovative technologies. Canva is a multi-purpose design app intended for photo editing, graphics, animation, file sharing and team collaboration. During the session, students were asked to create several posters about the environment.

The last workshop was dedicated to Micro:bit. This is an open source hardware ARM-based embedded system designed by the BBC for use in computer education. Students had the opportunity to use micro:bit go kits to learn computer coding. It has built-in features which make it easy to use. By harnessing both hardware and software, the computing skills of students are enhanced. The device lets students discover that what they do on the screen has a direct impact on the micro:bit hardware in their hands. This helps them make the connection between the virtual and the physical world, and thus understand the utility of programming. Ease of use is a key features of the micro:bit, with students being able to program it via web browsers on Windows, macOS and Chrome OS and dedicated mobile phone apps.

Attending similar events enhances the students’ cultural awareness and complements the work being done during lessons.

Cultural Activities A number of cultural activities were held throughout the scholastic year as part of the Culture Pass Scheme. Several classes were involved in a number of educational and cultural performances/workshops, namely theatre performances ‘The Complete History of Europe’, ‘The Complete History of Malta’ and ‘Caravag-Who?’ by More or Less Theatre, two dance performances entitled ‘Message in a bottle’ and ‘Your Voice Affects Me’ by Pamela Kerr and a musical performance/workshop by Chris Dingli ‘Bach to school: Crazy Composers and their Mind-blowing music’. RELIGION

Prayer Spaces in Schools The Department of Religion and Ethics has embarked on a new project aimed at creating an oasis of prayer and meditation within the school. Together with the school’s SLT, the department felt the need to create some space for our adolescents because they too, raise many questions, some to do with their experiences, both good and bad, some to do with their sense of wonder at the universe we live in and questions related to life. Students have interest in their non-material aspects of life, the spirit or soul, and want to explore how these ideas and experiences help them to develop their own sense of identity, self-worth, personal insight, meaning and purpose. Prayer Spaces in Schools enable our students, of all faiths and none, to explore their life questions, spirituality and faith, in a creative and interactive way. Prayer spaces give students the opportunity to develop skills of personal reflection and to explore prayer in an open, inclusive and safe environment. With this in mind, the SLT offered its full support and took the initiative to identify a room which we will transform in a way to encourage personal reflection on issues such as forgiveness, injustice, thankfulness, big questions, identity, etc. Both staff and students are invited to visit the prayer space on a voluntary basis during their breaks and teachers can also bring their students for a subject-lesson in the prayer space.

SCIENCE

VISIT TO NATURE RESERVE (YEAR 7) As part of the Integrated Science course, Year 7 students visited the nature reserves of Ghadira, IsSimar and Foresta 2000. This visit was related to the unit Living Things and the Environment. This educational visit provided outdoor learning and increased the students’ awareness of the natural environment and the need to protect nature. A nature reserve is an area where nature is protected. The students were able to observe animals and plants in their natural habitat. A habitat is the place where an animal or plant lives. Habitats at the nature reserves include brackish lake (a mixture of fresh water and sea water), sandy shore and woodland. Animals and plants are adapted to live in their habitat. An adaptation is a physical feature or behaviour that helps a plant or animal survive in its surroundings. Several chameleons were observed. These reptiles live among trees. Chameleons have several adaptations which help them survive. They have camouflage and blend with their surroundings to hide from predators, to avoid being eaten. They have a long sticky tongue to catch insects. Their feet and tail are adapted to grip on branches. The students observed plants and animals and identified vital functions of living things. The seven vital functions are movement, respiration (getting energy from food), sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrition. They also identified plants using a plant key. Trees and shrubs identified include the Aleppo Pine (Znuber), Araar (Gharghar), African Tamarisk (Bruka), Lentisk (Deru) and Golden Samphire (Xorbett). Animals may be vertebrates (with a backbone) or invertebrates (without a backbone). Vertebrates observed included birds and chameleons. Invertebrates included insects, spiders, snails and woodlice. Animals which eat plants are called herbivores. These included snails, grasshoppers, honey bees and butterflies. Carnivores eat other animals. These included chameleons, geckos and spiders. Robins are omnivores, eating both plants and animals. They eat seeds and berries, as well as insects and worms. The students were also able to observe human impact on the environment. Negative impacts include litter, noise pollution and air pollution from traffic. The nature reserve protects animals and plants in their habitat. This is a positive impact on the environment. Also, the school visit helped increase the students’ awareness of the natural environment. Christopher Bonello Science teacher

Kelsy Attard and Helena Gierasimiuk, two students from our school were involved in ‘Ghanja Ghalik’, an initiative through which students, under the guidance of professionals, write the lyrics and music with the aim of submitting a song for Ghanja tal-Poplu. This invaluable experience gave the students the opportunity to compose their own song, choosing their own theme and style, recording it in a professional studio, and later performing it in front of an audience. The current situation unfortunately has affected the running of this project as well, and although the song has been recorded, preparations for the Ghanja tal-Poplu had to be postponed for the time being.
