The Niugini Dive Adventures (NDA) was first established at the Madang Resort Hotel in 1967 with the Late Bob and his wife Dinah Halstead as our diving instructors. Since NDA was established, we have continued to provide diving as a PADI Dive facility for over 40 years now. Previously, we provided diving as an optional activity rather than the prime purpose for a vist to Madang and PNG. Our prime objective remains, exposing the wonderful rich cultural heritage of the people and the wide variety of the geographical beauty as well as its wildlife. We have shown this both on land and aboard our mini expedition cruise vessels, again offering diving as an optional activity. More recently, we have placed greater emphasis on diving, hence our attendance at DEMA, BOOTS, ITB, Maritime shows in Japan and other dive exhibitions throughout the world. We are being more active in promoting diving every year. Apart from our base at the Madang Resort, where our expert diving instructors undertake instructions and operate land based diving, we also operate the Kalibobo Spirit (KS). The 30m luxury motor yacht is fully equipped to handle 12 divers on offshore islands in PNG. Whilst we have scheduled departures, the KS is also available for exclusive charter which has attracted such well known people as Sir. Mich Jagger. I look forward to seeing you here in beautiful Madang, a place known for its amazing coral coasts, its people and its unique cultures. Sincerely,

Sir. Peter Barter Managing Director. Sir Peter L C Barter, GCL, OBE, Kt

Magical Madang

The warm fertile waters that surge through the many passages and channels in the barrier reefs around Madang create the ideal environment for a vast range of marine life. Marine Biologists from all over the world make pilgrimages to Madang, to its wonders. For sheer colour and diversity of life, the seas around Madang have no rival. You can enjoy world class diving only minutes from the Madang Resort. Although you can enjoy world-class diving only minutes from the Madang Resort, the best spots are a little more remote and require more effort to get to. Undoubtedly, the most exciting destination is Bagbag Island, lying 32 nautical miles off the coast. This small island has several excellent harbours that were put to good use by the Japanese Navy during WW2. These were the only foreign people to inhabit the island in any numbers and today there are only the delightful village people to greet you. Approximately 10km in length and 25km wide, the island was one of many peaks of a long mountain range pushed up from the sea floor by cataclysmic volcanic forces thousands of years ago - the peaks surround an extinct volcano. The island's close neighbour, Karkar, is still an active volcano. The other peaks remain underwater, sheer pinnacles that spear from thousands of feet to within 15 feet of the surface - being so far from the mainland there are no estuaries too muddy or soil the crystal clear waters.

During the allied campaign to seize the Japanese strongholds north of Lae during 1943, Japanese anti-aircraft guns around the Madang coastline shot down many allied aircraft. Most famous of these, in diving circles is the B25 Mitchell Bomber, which lies in 60 feet of water near Wangat Island. The bomber lost its port engine on impact, but apart from this, it is virtually intact. Several of the crew survived and swam to nearby Wongat Island before being captured by the Japanese and later executed. Friendly villages hid the pilot and he was kept out of Japanese hands for several days. He was eventually captured and transferred to a prisoner of war camp in Rabaul, but survived the war. Several years ago he revisited Madang to take a look at his old bird. Penetrating through the cockpit of the aircraft you can peer down into the bomb bay, the doors of which were open on impact, and you can take a look at the rack of bombs still wired up and ready to offload as they were in 1943. Ribbon Eel, Rhinomuraena quaesita There are a variety of different species of sea creatures, not as unique as a family of Ribbon Eel that live on the ocean’s floor around the bomber.

uss boston

16

Location: 40km North from the Madang Resort How to get there? 1 Hour by boat from the Madang Resort. Max Depth: 40m plus How? Drift or from the beach. Just north of The Quarry is the USS Boston, an American liberty ship, which was converted for mine sweeping duties. The Boston struck the exposed rocky outcrop and sank to the bottom of a coral drop off in 30 meters of water. The wreck is about 70 meters long by 25 meters wide and apart from the two bronze screws is virtually intact. It has been described, by some travel writers, as one of the best dives in the world. The prevailing longshore current here, at The Quarry, travels north. As the wreck is oriented with the bow pointed towards the north, USS Boston, 30th June 1943. Photo courtesy of nait is a very relaxing procedure vysite.de to start at the stern and drift through and around the wreck, to the bow. You ascend the reef wall by clasping the hard corals that cover it to the decompression zone, where many of the animal and plant attractions of The Quarry are also to be found, making it quite an interesting decompression stop.

the quarry

17

Location: 40km North from the Madang Resort. How to get there? 1 hour by boat from the Madang Resort. Max Depth: 40m plus How? Drift Swimming out over the reef you can identify many species of “dendrophyllid corals”; especially giant barrel shaped “Turbinaria Frondens”. Some are over a meter in diameter. These are surrounded by a dazzling array of colonies of “golden Daisy” or “Sunshine Coral” - “Tubastraea Aurea”, which cling precariously to overhangs and the walls of small caves located in the reef wall. There is always the opportunity for photographing the beautiful “nudibranch mollusc,” ‘Phestilla Melanobrachia,’ which seems to consider the aurea its staple diet. The aurea is also eaten by the “Wentletrap Snail”, which eats out the polyps and leaves strings of bright yellow eggs in the cavities. The shallow water on top of the reef and its crystal clarity make this an ideal option for even the ambient light photographer. The ecosystem of The Quarry also seems particularly favourable for virtually every other species of marine mollusc. The Quarry is home to the common Tiger Cowrie and the prized Golden Cowrie (pictured above). Lucky divers have even come across the Giant Triton.

hole in the wall 18

Location: 40km North from the Madang Resort. How to get there? 1 hour by boat from the Madang Resort. Max Depth: 40m plus How? Anchoring The third major attraction on the North Coast is a natural, tidal lagoon formed by a wide wall of volcanic rock. The wall completely encloses the lagoon but at a depth of 15 feet it is pierced by a magnificent arch which allows divers to enter the sea from the lagoon - a particularly useful entry when the south east winds make shore dives impossible at other locations along the North Coast of Madang. The wall is outside the lagoon and well down where an extensive range of colourful reef fish can be seen. Photographers are attracted to the reef here in hopes of getting footage of the “ ” - called the curious cod but really a member of the grouper family. Unfortunately for the microdon it has absolutely no fear of humans and can often swim so close it becomes a nuisance. This has resulted in its almost total disappearance from the islands of the Pacific. A common sight here, are small schools of common squirrel fish, which is a night hunter, but can be seen darting in and out of small crevices.

bagabag island Location: 60km Northeast from the Madang Harbour. How to get there? 2 hours by boat from the Madang Resort. Max Depth: 30m plus How? Drift The inner fringing reefs have steep drop offs to the lagoon floor at 40m (130ft). The highly scupltured walls have caverns and crevices that are rich in marine life, with a healthy population of invertebrates like nudibranches and flatworms. The usual reef fish can also be found, though not in great numbers. The outer barrier reefs and passes have some of the most dynamic pelagic diving in the Madang area. Sharks are frequent as are the Dogtooth Tuna, Spanish Mackerals, Barracuda, Bigeyed Trevally and so many more migratory marine creatures. Soft corals and sea fans decorate the walls allowing great schools of fish feed to feed in the current that passes through the island. Very little diving has been done here, evident from the reefs ‘pristine quality.’ There is excellent and easy snorkelling in the shallows of the fringing reefs. Only experienced snorkelers should attempt the outer barrier, this is due to the fast current that passes through the outer barrier reefs on the island.

he Madang’s Bel people, who encompass villages such as Kranket, Sek, Riwo, Siar, Yabob and Bilbil, speak the common Belan Language (Mennis, 2006, p. 2). The Bel people have fished and have used the seas as a source of their livelihood traditionally and also in today’s modern Madang. For many decades, traditionally, the Bel people have voyaged the seas around Madang, skilfully navigating their voyage routes; they are the masters of their seas. Due to the raised coral reefs that has created stony soils throughout the Bel Villages along Madang’s coast, many villagers found it difficult to cultivate the land for crops, they then turned to their voyaging skills to trade with other villages along the Rai Coast of Madang, “they depended on their earth-ware pots for trading for food (Mennis, 2006, p.2.)”

Madang is the most diverse province in PNG, with its complex traditional hierarchy and knowledge of their land and sea, diving in its pristine coral reefs and breath-taking islands demands respect, both for its people now and the traditional forefathers of the people of Madang.

In September 1871, a Russian ship visited the Rai Coast of Madang, this took place many years after the trade between the Bel people and the villagers from Rai Coast, (the trade still continued during this time). Russian Explorer Nikolai Nikolovitch Mikouho-Maclay became the first European to set foot on the Rai Coast of Madang. The Russian explorer became acquainted with the people from the Gorima Village in Rai Coast and wrote many detailed recounts of the Madang people and their traditional trade. Maclay, through his observation, “he observed that the traders, as visitors, commanded respect from the host villages who had to follow a set of procedures when the traders arrived offering them betel nut and pigs,
