In 2021 PNG celebrated 46 years of Independence by hosting the South Pacific Games, the Pacific Forum, Melanesian Spearhead Group and the APEC Conference in 2018. students with campuses in Mt Hagen, Rabaul, Port Moresby and Wewak. In 2021 the first students in the medical faculty graduated.

In recent years there has been a large influx of Asians who today own almost all the supermarkets and stores in Madang all selling Chinese made goods. The few remaining store is Anderson Supermarket. One of the new major Chinese stores was burnt to the ground over the New Year period. In 2020 & 2022 the economy was crippled largely due to the COVID19 virus and is very slowly recovering.

Bike Hire: We offer bikes for hire around the town area. See Concierge or front office staff. Business Centre: The Business Centre is located on the Mezzanine Floor of the main building where you can use our computers and access internet through the Telikom optic fibre cable providing broadband. Coupons can be purchased from the front office. It should be noted that there are frequent outages of internet services beyond the control of the Resort.

Barter: The Barter Family own the Madang Resort as a division of MTS Limited which was a pioneer in the development of tourism in PNG. The current Chairman is Sir Peter Barter, GCL, OBE, Kt and remains a resident in Madang.

Breakfast: We serve buffet breakfast in the Janek Aben or Haus Win Restaurants in the main building upon the presentation of a breakfast voucher and is dependent if you have purchased the tate with breakfast included. Full a-la-carte breakfast is available upon request in the Restaurant and for Room Service and is charged at the cost quoted on the menu.

Conferences: The Madang Resort has several well equipped conference centres including the Sana Room which can seat theatre style up to 450 person, Banquet Style 350 and can be divided into three separate rooms. The Tamendek Board Room can seat 25 and the Nicholay MiklouchoMaclay can seat 50. All are fully equipped, air conditioned with their own rest rooms and kitchen facilities.

Our Dive vessels include the Madang Reef Explorer, the Dallman Diver and the Kalibobo Diver, a newly built vessel capable of carrying 40 passengers or a double cab front loading ramp.All vessels meet AMSA survey requirements and are powered by 2 x 225hp outboard motors. A new vessel, Kalibobo Express provides a schedule service between Madang and KarKar Island, with extended services upon demand to Manus Island/ Province. Divine Word University: The DWU main campus is in Madang. Apart from being one of the best Universities in the Pacific, it is the largest business in Madang and is very self sustaining in as much as it has its own building construction, plumbing, electrical, sawmill, brick and paver making facilities. DWU operates under a Council largely nominated by the SVD missionaries who have spent more than 100 years providing education and health services throughout PNG.

Elizabeth Sowerby Orchid Gardens: A magnificent orchid garden that was located on the RHS of the entrance to the Madang Resort, but has now closed due to poor managment. Front Office: The front office is located in the main building and manned 24/7. It is undergoing an upgrade in the second half of 2016 to provide better service to our guests and patrons. Functions: We offer several venues for conferences and workshops. The Sana Room can seat up to 450 in theatre style or 400 in banquet style. The Sana Room can be divided into 3 sections, each with its own restrooms and kitchens and seat 150, 120 & 100 respectively. In addition we offer the Board Room that can seat 25 and the Nicholay Mikloucho-Maclay Room that can seat 50 all with restrooms and kitchen.

Garden Wing: The resort’s garden wing is an exceptional facility, it provides 20 deluxe rooms including 4 with adjoining doors, balconies and kitchenettes for longer term guests. Haus Win: The famous Haus Win Restaurant was rebuilt in 2013 and provides seating for up to 300. It is famous for seafood and the best known dish is “Girigiri” a combination curry seafood served in a coconut shell. There is a bar, nightly live music and is set along the beautiful waterfront overlooking the harbour.

Haus Kibung: Located on the first floor overlooking the large pool and the Madang Harbour, it is fully air conditioned with Pacific Green Palm Furniture. Jogging: It is possible to use the pathways throughout the Resort for jogging, the approximate length of the jogging track is 1.8kms and is all in secure gated environment. Kalibobo Village: This is a separate resort and located beside the Madang Resort with common ownership and management providing 70 rooms. 24 Apartments & 10 cottages for longer term accommodation in a gated community with lagoon and absolute water frontage. Kalibobo Express: A Ferry Service is operated by MTS providing a safe reliable travel between Madang and Karkar Island with extended service to Manus, Long and Manam Island. Lagoons: include the Sagen Aben and Kalibobo Lagoons within the resort. Whilst they are available for swimming, it is wise to wear sneakers’ to protect your feet from the coral reef. Both lagoons have a Haus Win and Gazebo for relaxation overlooking the waters of the beautiful Madang Harbour.

Kayaks: Kayaks and sailing catamarans are available from the Dive Shop. Laundry: A daily laundry service is provided. You are asked to place clothes to be washed in the laundry bag provided and complete the docket listing all clothes to be washed. Providing washing is submitted before 0900 it will be delivered to your room by 1700. We do not do drycleaning, we also cannot accept responsibility for any damage to clothing.

Library is located in the Explorer’s Bar, it is based on an honour system where guests are expected to return books and leave behind any books they would like to share with other guests.

Marina is located near Sagen Aben Park and is the base for Niugini Dive Adventure boats and the Kalibobo Spirit. Petrol and diesel refuelling is available from the Marina with advance notice. Markets: The Japanese Government funded, Madang Town Market was opened in March 2016 and is located in the town centre. The market is open daily except Sunday and public holidays and has available fresh vegetables, fish, fruit as well as artefacts, handmade handicraft and clothing. There are several smaller markets outside the township along the Bogia North Coast Road and the Ramu Highway.

Manager: A duty Manager is available between 0500-2130 daily and can be contacted through the front office. Messages: Will be delivered to your room or by flashing light on your telephone. Melanesian Foundation: The Melanesian Foundation was established in 1986 for the purpose of helping people in remote rural areas that were visited by passengers aboard our cruise vessels. As a result, the Foundation has raised funds to supply 28,000 double 8school desks, built aid posts, schools, renovated and built a number of health centres, supplied medical equipment and X Ray machines and assisted in the establishment of the National health Radio system. Packages: MTS offer a number of holiday and dive packages featuring the Madang Resort, Kalibobo Village, NDA and the Kalibobo Express. For more details contact MTS on Ext. 8300. Pools: There are four pools at the Madang Resort which include the main 35m saltwater pool, a children’s pool, the Raffles Pool and a Pool at the Townhouses for tenants. There is no life guard on duty. The security fence around the pool must always remain locked to prevent children gaining access without supervision. Pool Towels are available from reception. Porterage: A porter is available from 0600-2100 daily to provide porterage and concierge services to guests. We can also provide club cars for guests staying in Kalibobo Village. Raffles Wing: This wing provides 44 standard, deluxe executive rooms and 3 selfcontained one bedroom apartments. Rental cars are available from AVIS who have the Madang base at the Madang Resort. Rotary Park opposite Madang Resort on Coronation driveway was maintained by the Resort Rotary Club meets Wednesday 1830-2030 weekly in the Haus Win. Visiting Rotarians are welcome. Security issues are always a concern and we at the Madang Resort take great care in making sure you are safe within the hotel grounds. We also ask for your help by not inviting visitors you do not know into the hotel or into rooms. Please lock your valuables in the room safe or safe at front office and not leave valuable items lying around the rooms or balconies. Do not leave doors open. We cannot be responsible for any thing missing from rooms or balconies. In short do not tempt the mortals! Do not walk outside the Resort at night, even to close by clubs or the township unaccompanied. The Resort has trained security staff, all gates are manned 24/7. There are CCTV Cameras operating in all public areas and at gates. Sensor light are installed around the resort which automatically

illuminate as you walk about in the evening. Please use peep holes on doors before opening and ensure the chain is secured before retiring. Please report any suspicious visitors to the front office. Shopping is available downtown at various supermarkets including MTS, Best By, Papindo, Andersons, Brian Bell, Ela Emporium and surprisingly second-hand clothes stores often have some very classy clothes and footware that are popular amongst residents, including expats! Smoking: All rooms at the Madang resort & Kalibobo Village are non-smoking rooms. Guests requiring to smoke are asked to do so on the balconies to avoid the unpleasant smell of tobacco in the rooms.
